Re: [Elecraft] [P3] P3 and K144XV tvtr

2012-09-16 Thread Simon Lewis

Ahh I did wonder if it needed bumped up

Ill have a play tomorrow

been fun listening to 20m all day watching the world whizz by on the the screen

the P3 is fun ... with the SVGA ... its awesome :)

The ext monitor option is worth every penny

now if only I could use a mouse on those waterfalls!

:)

mind you with SDR-IQ hanging off the IF port I can use the PC to drag the K3
round

fun!

:)

Re: [Elecraft] [P3] SVGA display issues - couple probs in fact!

2012-09-16 Thread Simon Lewis

Yes I found some interference on 144 and on 28 MHz from the P3

Ill throw some ferrites round the PSU cable

the interference sloping on the screen did not occur on the SDR-IQ hanging off
the IF port too

so puzzled by it

will see if I can make it occur again sometime!

Cheers

Simon

[Elecraft] [P3] P3 and K144XV tvtr

2012-09-16 Thread Simon Lewis

Does the P3 need the transverter gain setting altered when using the int K144XV
tvtr

or is it set ok ??

I needed to bump the ref level down to about -156 to get the noise floor at a
decent level on the P3

Anyone else using the P3 with the K144XV??

CHeers

2012-09-16 Thread Simon Lewis

I have a couple issues

Every couple mins the whole noise floor jumps and a horizontal line appears
across this display

is this somekind of time marker or something else

??

Also my shack this morning was cold and for a while I got some
interference bars that sloped across the screen on the VGA monitor

once the place warmed up they disappeared

Re: [Elecraft] K144XV + K144RFLK issue

2012-07-06 Thread Simon Lewis

Hi Roger

Hmmm thats interesting .. I wonder if its something hardware related then?

I know I am not alone and some others have the same issues -so not just
something locally in my station.

Its not ext 10 MHz source - I have tried 3 different sources and all do the
same as does my Rb standard too.

Every 3 secs it jumps a good way ... at last 10-20 Hz if not more ... I have
not measured it exactly but its very audible.

Im keen to fix it for sure ... if I knew how!

Cheers

Re: [Elecraft] K144XV + K144RFLK issue

2012-07-05 Thread Simon Lewis

Hi Wayne

Yes I am seeing large jumps 10 Hz or > at 144 for sure. I know that others are
seeing jumps too and at 6m and 10m too.

Appreciate you picking this up

be great as at the moment that kind of jump every 3 secs makes weak signal digi
modes difficult and even listening to the local beacon darn right annoying and
the transverter pretty much useless for my use just now.

happy to act as a tester - please shout

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Dayton- new hf rigs?

2012-05-21 Thread Simon Lewis

Wayne,

with the K3 firmware updated and the KX3 out will you now have some time for
someone to look at the frequency jumping in the ref locked internal 144
transverter ?

this is still the most annoying bug for a weak signal operator - to the extent
it makes me not use the int trv at all for JT65

I know some of the other weak sig ops have asked for this to be looked at as
well

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Display Anomaly

2012-03-15 Thread Simon Lewis

They are chirpsounders - normally on SSB or CW you may hear a 'blip' as they
pass through

using a pandapter you can see they whizzing up band visually!

They are Ionospheric sounders mapping the layers. Quite useful tools.

There are various radars and sounders also operating around 5-6 Mhz and 10 MHz

TIGER around the 10 MHz spectrum is another ionospheric sounds and you will see
various CODAR signals too (these are wave heights and direction radars for
weather)

not very useful! with their broadband noisey signals.

HF is a busy place even in these days of satellites and microwaves!

Geoff

no def the K3 thats jumping - no movement on the DEMI tvtr/IC7600 or the IC9100

the beacon is well known to me and used daily as a propagatation checker - it
does not have this characteristic

thanks for the tip though :)

[Elecraft] K144XV + K144RFLK issue

2012-03-06 Thread Simon Lewis

HI All

I dipped into the Elecraft world again with a K3/10

Plus Tvtr IF and K144XV

Mainly as a transverter driver

I bought the reflock for the radio and the transverter

All is fine and my box is alive and well

Just installed the K144XV and I notice an unusual change in receive freq when
looking at a local beacon on 144

Every 3 secs or so it jumps about 10 Hz high or so then returns back to its
normal freq - then 3 secs later does the same again

not sure why its doing this any advice appreciated

I have done all the cal routines and the main unit has 10 MHz applied and is
locked - flashing * on the cal entry

I only just purchased it so I assume the firmware would be the latest?

Thanks

Simon ZL4PLM

I am highly disappointed with the whole situation regards the K3 additions

The sub rx was one of the main reasons why I purchased so early.

Same for the digital recorder. And filters.

If someone is looking for one then please email off list - no doubt some one
will be interested???

I guess EU prospective owners best. Overseas shipping ok at cost.

Perhaps I will come back in a year or so and see how things are doing then.

Sorry guys you blew it for me this time. Having deposited a chunk of cash
for 9 mnths for this I feel highly upset just now. Cheated even.

Perhaps some one else would like to continue with #114 - I have something
else I can be using right now.

Please email off list - first come first served

Rgds

I again suffered the same issues with the filter settings being changed
after firmware upgrade

all other functions are perfect

FL1 reverts to on ie TX FL and the rest to off

update was via firmware loader

at least TX was ok this time!

just a few mins to check the filter settings!!

All,

for the record - just incase some one else experiences this: Maybe I did
something wrong ive no idea but I thought I followed the path and did
nothing out of the ordinary.!

I just did the latest firmware upgrade.

NR works fine and sounds great

Going to TX nothing out and I get ERR TXG

recal synth and tried to recal power as I had the setting at 0 previous as I
had my tvtr connected directly to the antenna skt ANT1

nothing on any bands

checking the filter setting etc all had been reset to OFF and TX FL was set
to FL1

filters are

FL1 empty
FL2 empty
FL3 2.7 5p
FL4 500 5p
FL5 250 8p

reset then to correct settings and inc FL TX to FL3

still no ouput and ERR TXG

decided to reload firmware - cal synt and then pwr - nothing still ERR TXG

finally decided to reset all parameters and reinstalled MCU/DSP firmware

recal synth and pwr - now had more issues. I could set the filter
settings but exiting the menu would NOT save them - if I went back in the
settings had been changed!

finally after many attempts it managed to save the settings (ie tapping menu

bizzare!

ERR TXG gone and recal all bands correctly

[Elecraft] Quick Feedback on K3 so far

2007-12-02 Thread Simon Lewis

Well #114 far exceeds my expectations.

My main use is for VHF/UHF as an IF driver for microwaves.

Yesterday it got connected to my Mutek 144 MHz tvtr which drives my dual
band 10g/24g tvtrs

I am really impressed with the audio quality, my ham friend who came to have
a look had his jaw on the floor and simply said "wow!"

Really superb audio! Even at 100 Hz - no ringing - clean crisp audio with a
lovely "feel" to it - not harsh like my pro 2.

Filtering is excellent and monitoring some of the beacons yesterday revealed
how useful this baby will be - most people think that you can drive
microwave tvtrs with an FT290 and it will work as good as a top line radio -
which is nonsense - I need end to end performance and the K3 allows me to
dig into weak signals unlike a normal VHF multimode like a 290 never could

Low noise receiver is excellent and with my heil this sounds super - really
pleased.

No major issues during built - all smoothly put together - 1 evening and 1
mornings work. (I had a head start having built a number of K2s)

So ... Impressed and waiting for this to develop further

Some great features and with the 2nd rx this will really add to my station
capabilty

Well done Elecraft - another impressed customer!

:-)

73 Simon DL4PLM

And here is the final #114 finished and working on 10g/24g!

RE: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 Support on the Weekends?

2007-12-01 Thread Simon Lewis
Henry

I would install the PAIO board that's in the 100w pa kit and use that by
setting the right setting in the menu PAIO normal setting under the KPA
config item - That should work as intended but with no PA installed and
allow your basic tests

The PA jumper is only needed if the 100w pa is not installed and no PAIO
board is available as far as I can see.

I think you should not have any issue doing that and it would work fine

Simon, et al,

Thanks for the quick responses. I thought that with all of us building
these over the weekend, there would be someone answering support
questions. But, I know they have been busy, and maybe need some time
off to deal with other issues.

I do have the KPA3 100 watt amp to install.

The assembly manual that came with the kit indicates that it is not
necessary if you are going to install the KPA3. However, the picture
in the manual does show it already installed from Elecraft.

The latest assembly manual, from the web site, indicates that you will
still need the PA Jumper Block to do some initial testing before
installing the KPA3.

So, I am trying to get clarification as to whether I really need it.
And, if I do, I need to get someone to ship me one.

As an aside, it sure would be nice to know what changed from manual
revision to revision. That way I could just update the manual that
came with the kit originally. In my full-time job, when a procedure is
changed, there is always a sheet describing what
paragraphs/sentences/pages were changed. That makes it easy to see
where the differences exist.

You can continue, you will not need it if you have the 100W PA. It
should /
could be on the mainboard anyway.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Calibration Problem

Up to the point where I am trying to do the 'TX Gain Calibration'.
(Everything to this point in time has gone exactly as expected; I have
calibrated the Synthesizer successfully, and set up (and rechecked) the
filter settings to match the actual crystal filters instllaed).

Here is the problem.

When I follow the TX Gain instructions on Page 46 of the owner's manual, I
find a few problems:

1) when I press the ANT button, VFO B says 'NO ATU' .. probably
not an error, since I am in ATU Bypass error. I guess I was a little
confused by the wording: Switch to ANT1 by tapping ANT. since I never see
the K3 talking to ANT2 ...

2) The real problem is that after setting the power to "exactly
5.0 watts" and holidng TUNE, the power reading on 160 meters only goes to
1.2 watts; when I tap TUNE to exit, VFO B says: ERR TXG. Similar problems
on other banads, to wit: 1.8 Watts on 80m, 1.4 Watts on 40m, 1.9 Watts on
20m, etc.

I am stuck! Help!

Thanks.

In some countries yes.

If I remember correctly places like Malta and Thailand require "hard"
band limits in the hardware (firmware), and they check for them too.

The problem is what the subject is. I'm trying to sort out

I've checked my spam box in case something has gone in there but nothing is

For months now, you guys have been hounding me about a K3. Post after post
extolling the virtues of this machine have rolled across my screen. At first
it was easy to dismiss them since the rig was "vapor" but now we're getting
lab measurements taken from real rigs. We're getting recordings from beta
testers to prove the rig exists. We even have shipping updates that put us
mere days away from the first shipment.

I've tried to be tolerant, and to let is all just roll off my back but I
just can't any more. I've had it. I'm can't take it any more. I placed my
order yesterday for a K3/10 kit. THERE! I hope you're happy!

2007-09-27 Thread Simon Lewis
And much more.

Don't forget

Aurora

Auroral E

Ionoscatter

F2

And mixed mode!

6 is HIGHLY addictive!!!

>From GM I ran 2 x 7 ele long yagis and 400w and regularly used to work
100-150 + US stns during F2 openings!

Many using dipoles and 100w inside rooms!

I am small fry - 138 countries on the band but many of the big guys are 200
countries+

And you can work some real DX - JA/VK etc

In terms of openings - SpE can be kind of hit and miss but many opening such
as F2, Au, AuE, Iono etc you can predict with some skills on the band.

Best place to see what is happening is on the UK six metre pages UKSMG

Have fun but be warned its very addictive and once tried you wont want to
give it up

WARNING! 6 meters is addicitive! Once you work an E opening you will be
hooked for life.

You have received a lot of good info on 6 already. I will not repeat it.
Chasing grid squares is a lot of fun. You have several interesting
propagation modes on 6.

Meteor scatter

sproadic e

tropospheric ducting

All of these produce some significant openings. The apparent randomness of
the openings is why 6 is refered to as the "Magic Band" (IMHO). I have
worked into europe with a dipole and 100 watts (cw & ssb) from EL29lm
(Houston, TX) as well as 38 states!

Good luck,

[Elecraft] Order changes

2007-09-23 Thread Simon Lewis
Eric/Wayne

Will we be able to make order changes prior to final depatch

And would you have additional extra of things like 100w PA which you can
stand being ordered? And changes to a built K3 for example vs kit?

Thanks

[Elecraft] K3 question to field testers - 10M birdies??

2007-07-21 Thread Simon Lewis
All,

Can one of the testers please comment

My main interest in the K3 is for transverter driving from 10m

Can someone provide info on what birdies if any they find around the 10m
band receiver

My K2 was less than acceptable in this hence the reason it got sold

Is the K3 10m section free ?? Anyone comment?

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Preliminary Specifications

So you don't want ANY phone calls or e-mails about
specs bacause you're busy with the rollout?

Just say so if that's it!

;-)

[Elecraft] K3 Preliminary Specifications
On our K3 page, you'll now find a link to a .pdf
version of the K3's preliminary specs. We'll add an
HTML version, too, probably next week. Any of these
specs may change pending further testing or design
changes.

PLEASE don't call or e-mail with questions about the
specs. We'll add or update specs as time permits.
Discussion about the specs is fine, of course and
we'll be diligently reading the reflector. But I'd
like to ask in advance that any *arguments* about
specs be taken off-line, so Eric (our reflector cop)
doesn't have to put the hammer down :)

Comment about RX specs:

Receive dynamic range (IMDDR3) is shown for 5 to 20
kHz offsets at present, with the 400-Hz INRAD filter.
We're trying to be conservative, because testing
organizations may get slightly different results due
to variations in equipment and procedures. Our own
tests, conducted at three separate locations,
consistently show 102 to 105 dB at 5 kHz. We also
didn't list 2 kHz offset performance yet, because
we're carefully characterizing all filters. Typically,
we're seeing low to mid 90's on all filters.
(Measuring the K3's dynamic range has been a challenge

because it's higher than anything we've dealt with
before. We've had to beef up our test gear to handle
it.)

Again, please, NO phone calls or e-mails about specs
-- this will just slow down the engineering and
support staff. We're dealing with many details right
about now, as you can imagine.

Thanks!

Wayne

Was there any answers in the storm of email!

Speking of transverters

Will the K3 display be changeable like the K2 so you get 144.xxx 50.xxx
222. etc

If you can allow us to add the display to 1296. for future upconverting
I will buy loads of K3s! :-)

What about the CW keyer ... And the DVR - any idea on fuctionality

Can they be controlled ala' icom style by a small keypad remotely??

And any beacon modes..?

All helpful to us SHF ops

Since the K3 can do FM, I would expect the XV transverters to be popular
add-ons. I know I will be getting the XV144 and the FM filter. Are there any
plans to offer the transverters with K3 styling?

[Elecraft] 10m birdies

2005-06-20 Thread Simon Lewis

All,

I am using the K2 only as a tvtr driver for VHF, does any one else have some
major birdies on the 10m band?

I am trying to use the K2 as a Dx machine for contests and weak sig work but
this sometimes makes life awkward

is there any screening or anything in particular that causes them!

I also noticed occasionally jumpy tuning in the 10 m section too

any suggestions to fine tune these out?

Hello all,

there

any word on when a 432 MHz transverter will be available? I believe that I
heard somewhere that they were working on it. Any ideas?

RE: [Elecraft] Transverters

2004-07-06 Thread Simon Lewis

Paul,

I would never recommend such a device if your a serious VHFr

They leak and will pick up alot of external signals that are not on VHF!

I think a famous DX record in the UK was claimed by two 28 MHz drivers and
leaky connections in the 70s!

I would only recommend good solid cables and connectors and no switch if
your wanting your system to remain at the best performance. The A/B type
switches are generally not good and will "leak" signal across the switch
ports.

You can use the offset command in the K2 menu to trim the transverter onto
an accurate external signal - as long as your really sure that your are
100Hz off!!! dont rely on the local beacon ;-)

Reflector Members,

Those of you using Elecraft TransvertersAre all of you using an A/B
type switch to go from HF to VHF on the K2' transverter hookup?

I was a little surprised to see that to get the Drive RF to the
transverters required the use of an external or separate switch that would
require the individual to switch from the HF antenna to the transverters
with an external switch.

Is there any way to use those lower drive RCA connectors to eliminate the
switch?

Second question - my 144 transverter is about 100 cycles high. Is there a
way to correct this?
