Just 6 weeks from now FDIM 2015 will open its doors for attendees to pick up their badges and goody bags. We need some time to finalize arrangements so, if you plan to attend FDIM, please register now ! Details are on the FDIM webpage - www.qrparci.org/fdim For those that don't know, FDIM (Four Days In May), is the annual conference of QRP ARCI (QRP Amateur Radio Club International). It all takes place in Fairborn, a nice area on the outskirts of Dayton OH, and it runs in parallel with the famous Dayton Hamvention. FDIM is open to everyone - not just QRP ARCI members. The event will appeal to anyone interested in home construction, antennas, portable operation, Arduino - it is definitely not just for QRPers ! We start with a day of seminars on Thursday 14 May and a Vendor Evening where traders can show and sell their QRP related merchandise (a table at vendor night is provided free of charge - let me know if you need one). On Friday 15 May we organise buses from our hotel to the Hamvention. Late afternoon we start the annual Buildathon (this year building 4 items of test gear) - it's a social activity with support for inexperienced constructors. It also includes a Pizza Party ! Friday evening is 'Club Night'. An opportunity for regional QRP clubs to promote themselves and recruit members. The evening includes various fun & games and our Homebrew Competition. On Saturday 16 May there are more buses to the Hamvention and the FDIM Grand Banquet with awards and prize giving. As ever there are plenty of door prizes (several $1000s worth). The raffle will be for an Elecraft KX3 with accessories worth $2000+. Those that register online for the seminar will get free entry to the Seminar draw. [Elecraft] Announcement : Four Days In May (FDIM) 2013 at Dayton, OH
'Four Days In May' or FDIM is now well established as one of the biggest events affiliated to the Dayton Hamvention. 2013 will be the 18th year for FDIM. We expect 400-500 visitors this year. It is organised by the 'QRP Amateur Radio Club International' - QRP ARCI. If you run a kiloWatt don't dismiss this QRP event - there is plenty of interest for everyone. Over the years our visitors have been treated to sneak previews of several Elecraft products (including the K3 and KX3) and, once again, our raffle prize is an Elecraft radio ! Full FDIM details are at www.qrparci.org/fdim We kick off with a day of seminars on Thursday 16 May Our speakers include Roy Lewallen W7EL, Rick Campbell KK7B and George Dobbs G3RJV. This is followed by a pizza party and Buildathon - we mentor those less experienced constructors and everyone will complete a construction project before the end of the evening. Thursday evening we have a presentation from Ten-Tec which is followed by our Vendor Evening - an ideal place to buy kits, components, antennas, paddles and complete transceivers. It's a busy evening, but exhibitors still find time to chat and answer questions. Friday evening is our QRP Club Night. Fun, games, socialising. QRP clubs, groups and email list members can use a table to promote their interests. Our famous Homebrew Competition is judged by everyone attending Club Night. There's some ideas for a decent performance 40m rig from Harold Smith KE6TI. It uses bits that even I have in my junk box, so you probably do too. AA1TJ describes a single transistor transceiver Chris Trask N7ZWY has a design for a transmitter using only 2ns and 1N4148s There's 15 pages of Idea Exchange and it's all good stuff There are some great outdoor features. Guy N7UN and Steve N0TU (now WG0AT) and the goats climb Uncompahgre Peak. Meanwhile Brian, N6IZ climbs Mt Whitney and operates his KX1 and 32 foot vertical on the 14,505 foot peak ! Ed WA3WSJ tells us about the January Polar Bear Moonlight Madness Event (just read it !) operating in the snow on the Appalachian Trail. Apologies for the slightly of-topic post . . . After 2 months of work by a whole bunch of people the new QRP ARCI website went on-line at 1900z today. Please take a look and create an account for yourself (no details are passed to 3rd parties). Later, we will be adding some members only features. Already, there have been 120+ visitors from a dozen countries. We still have some tweaking to do so the site may be up and down a few times this week. As for content . . . We've hardly started ! Much, much more to come in the next few months. Check out the QRP calendar - if you have an event, rally or contest then update the calendar on-line now ! You are also welcome to submit articles (in plain text) and jpg photos for inclusion on the site. I would particularly like to hear from someone who could do an Elecraft kit build and take photos of every stage to put into a kind of 'comic book' feature on the web.
