[Elecraft] K3 power consumption

2009-06-15 Thread aa1o
Hi Wayne,
I would like to use my K3 for Field Day again this year. I have installed the
sub receiver and am concerned about my power budget. I use a 15 watt solar
panel to charge a battery and find that the K3 is now drawing over an amp on
receive. Is there any simple way to disable or turn off the sub receiver? I am
only going to use CW and 5watts output.

Re: [Elecraft] New to the Forum

2009-06-09 Thread aa1o
Gary,
Its been years since I built my K2, but allow a couple of weeks to complete
if you work several (6) hours a day. That sounds pretty intimidating but the
K2 is modular and it turns out you get to test the front panel and become
familiar with all of the controls before completing the main RF board. That
is then done in a couple of stages whereby you build just the 40meter
operations first, and then add the other bands. Later you can add options
such as automatic tuner, ssb, 160 meter, dsp, transverter, and high power
amplifier as you choose or not. The instructions are great and the whole
experience is very enjoyable. If you get in trouble the guys on this
reflector are a great help.

 Jim,

Nice to have the K3 assembly information. Have you or anyone else noted
the time to assemble a K2? I hope to build one or the other sometime in
 the not too distant future.

It isn't really that bad. Matter of fact it is farily easy, just be
 DETAIL
oriented and read everything twice and be sure you understand. That is
 not
hard at all with all the pictures. explanation detail and all. AND, the
 K3
is simply an assembly process, not rorroid winding or any of that stuff
 and
when you load the firmware, it is simply a single load of the latest as
 it
is all in each version. Even the load is a simple process, almost a one
 click deal.

You will find that most had about 10 to 12 hours from sealed box to power
 on
for the first time. I did mine in about 4 sessions that totaled 11 hours
and I went slow. AND it was fun. YOU build it yourself and you are
 not
afraid to tear it all apart, nothing to it, you built it and know all
 about
it, where everything is, what each piece does. and how to get it out and
back in if you want to.

[Elecraft] Fw: YAFR

2009-01-20 Thread aa1o

YANF - Yet Another Feature Request
I use the Heil Pro Headset and VOX for work in a contest. This weekend I was in
the VHF contest and got to try my new XDVR. It was great for running CQ TEST in
repeat mode. But when someone answered I would have to shut off the XDVR
hitting some button (it didn't seem to mater which one) on the K3.
Here is my request: It would be very nice if the VOX action between repeats
could shut off the CQ calling XDVR. During the CQ call it shouldn't disable the
XDVR only during the quiet period between repeats. That allows me to clear my
thoat and other things.
I am very thrilled with the K3. Today is its birthday. I got it exactly one
year ago today.
Thanks again for a super product

[Elecraft] k3 matching filters

2008-12-20 Thread aa1o
I received the KRX3 and the DVR today and am about to upgrade my k3. I am
using the 2.7 if roofing filter in the main unit and requested and paid for
a matching filter for the sub receiver.
The main receiver offset is -.97 but the new 2.k filter is marked -.93.
My question is are these a match or did I get the wrong part?
I would like to know before I install things because I would like not to
have to redo the installation if the part is wrong. Also its the week-end
before Christmas, and this would be a nice project for me over the Christmas
holidays as we are shut down from work until 5 January.
Can anyone help me out?

I think you may have received the wrong filter. At this point, I'd
install the new filter in the KRX3, but set the Main and KRX3 offsets
to -0.95 (split the difference). 20 Hz is not going to make a practical
difference in any operational sense that come sot mind.

You can check with Aptos to see about swapping the filter. If the new
filter is in the KRX3, it will be the easier one to swap out later.

Sorry about the error.

I hope you get a lot of enjoyment and use out of the KRX3. If you have a
second antenna, or a length of wire laying around that you can pretend is
a second antenna, you are likely to find Diversity reception a real
eye-opener (or is that a band opener?)

[Elecraft] Elecraft visit to Boxboro Mass

2008-08-24 Thread aa1o
Yesterday for the first time Elecraft came to the Northeast to the ARRL
Convention in Boxboro MA.
The booth was hosted by Eric an Lerma and it was my personal pleasure to
meet some real people from Elecraft after being a happy customer for many
years.
The booth attracted a good steady crowd most of the day, with a number of
people seeing the K3 for the first time. The booth was located right next to
the Ten Tec booth which seemed to attract little interest.
Eric gave a wonderful technical discussion of the design parameters and
decisions made in the K3. He also gave some information about Elecraft that
I didn't know. The company has 24 people, some of whom work from home. Even
Lyle and Gary are in different states. The company produces only ham radio
products and is now in its tenth year.
The manufacture of the K3 has been Eric's own responsibility and has been a
strain at times. It seems that whenever the backlog appears to be shrinking
the order rate picks up. He said that there is now about a 3 1/2 months
backlog which he hopes to shrink to zero by the end of the year.
The kdvr3 are now in production with a number of finished boards, but are
waiting for firmware. No word on the timing of this.
The 6 meter preamp is very near ready and should be introduced in a few
weeks.
The K2 continues to have interest and will be supported.

I want to thank Eric and Lerma for their visit to MA and hope that they will
come back sooner than ten years.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 on 6

2008-05-14 Thread aa1o

I have the same experience here with my 5 element beam.
The K3 receives better on 6m than my home made transverter that I used on 6
with the K2. In general I have trouble working weak stations anyway. Perhaps
more power out would make it better -

Hello Ron,

It's got less gain than my 7800 but I can still hear about 2dB more
noise on my antenna than I can on a 50 Ohm load.

I do 6m EME on occasion and I have been successful in monitoring 6m EME
QSOs with the K3, so for my setup (7 ele long yagi, Quiet rural area,
low loss feeder ) the limiting factor is band noise not RX noise or lack
of K3 sensitivity.

For others they may need more gain but in general if your antenna is
noisier than a 50 Ohm load then you have enough system gain, more gain
is unlikely to help as it will bring up the noise right along with the
desired signals

Elecraft are planning a 6m preamp to go with the K3 in any case

It is always enabled in FM mode, disabled in other modes at present. The
squelch knob is the outer knob on the concentric pot you use for RF gain.

Hi John,

Your K3 isn;t damaged. :-)

The 1.28 loader should be fine. If you are having CPU lockup problems,
that may be due to a comm driver version issue if you are using a USB to
Serial adapter like the KUSB. If you have the KUSB, you absolutely need to
be using the latest drivers. They are noted in the install notes for the
KUSB and on our K3 software page. They can be found at:

Re: [Elecraft] True Double Sideband AM?

2008-02-18 Thread aa1o

Bob,
I used my Collins 75A-3 with the 6kc filter to adjust the microphone gain on
AM. AM is definitely double sideband and sounds very good. I have made
several AM contacts on 160,75 and 6 meters. I found that setting the speech
compression to 0 gets the best results using an MH-2 microphone.
I am still learning how to use the K3 - I seem to find a new feature every
day.

Subject: [Elecraft] True Double Sideband AM?

Lately I have really become very interested in AM on both 75/80 and
160 meters and I recently read a review of the K3 stating that it was
a TRUE double sideband AM. Is this true? Any comments, feedback or
thoughts in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
