Re: [Elecraft] PTT-Key Settings won't save
Don, Bingo. That, in fact, was the problem. Turning on "Unsafe" solves the problem. I use cwtype which sends to the com port and doesn't poll the comm port. Assuming I was using a program like N1MM, which does read from the com port (for frequencies), do I just set the PTT-KEY to RTS-DTR and turn on USB-safe and the rig will automatically set up RTS-DTR after it receives a poll? Thanks for the help everyone. 73, Frank On Thu, Jul 4, 2024 at 1:43 PM W3FPR wrote: > Frank, > > That is a "safety feature" because if the computer is turned on after > the K3 is powered up, it can key the K3 when the computer tests/sets its > ports. > Once things have settled down at the computer, PTT-KEY should resort to > whatever it was set before the power off. > > You can find the full explaination in the full firmware release notes. > It was some time ago,, so I suggest searching the release notes for > PTT-KEY to find it. > > 73, > Don W3FPR > > On 7/4/2024 12:23 PM, Frank Stein via Elecraft wrote: > > Just clarify this strange behavior. > > I use the Config Menu to set the PTT-Key to RTS-DTR. Re: [Elecraft] PTT-Key Settings won't save
Just clarify this strange behavior. I use the Config Menu to set the PTT-Key to RTS-DTR. As long as I don't turn off the rig, it works correctly. Once I turn off via the front panel power switch, it loses this setting and goes back to OFF-OFF. If while it is set to RTS-DTR I do a SAVE CONFIGURATION in the utility, I can restore to the RTS-DTR values until I turn my power off. Then it goes back to OFF-OFF. Other config settings such a 1 or 2 speakers still can be changed and the change is stored even after a power off/on. Where are the settings stored in the K3? EPROM? Could one memory cell in an EPROM go bad? Is there a way to "factory reset" or something to clear this problem? [Elecraft] PTT-Key Settings won't save
Since Field Day, a new problem has appeared in my K3. I noticed that the PTT-Key Configs settings (RTS and DTR) are not saved when I turn off the rig. [Elecraft] Newly built K2 For Sale
I have recently finished building my K2, serial number 8017. The K2 has the KSSB and KSIO options also built by myself installed. After the build my K2 was sent to Elecraft Repair to troubleshoot a strange power problem which turned out to be a bad firmware chip on the KSSB module. The K2 was fully tested and aligned by Elecraft prior to returning it to me. The K2 was a winter project for me and I had no intention of keeping it at the conclusion of the project. Currently the K2 is set for a Kenwood microphone for SSB but of course that could easily be changed with jumper settings. I am asking for $895 plus shipping. You can also view my ad on QTH or eHam. If interested or you have questions regarding my K2 or the sale please email me directly at frankj02...@gmail.com <mailto:frankj02...@gmail.com>. Please do not reply to this email. Re: [Elecraft] PayPal holding payment
And they are listening just got this. We’ve got you covered with all the details: Beginning January 1, 2022, the IRS implemented new reporting guidelines for individuals receiving goods and services payments on PayPal and other platforms totaling $600 or more per year. So what exactly does this mean for you? Well, if you’re getting payments from friends and family members, this won’t apply (lucky you!). Friends and family payments are things like splitting a bill, sharing apartment expenses, or paying back friends. None of these are reported. The new tax requirements only apply to goods and services payments. These transactions are tagged in the app by a buyer, indicating they’re purchasing something like a couch from a seller. Payments received by a Seller Profile are also goods and services payments. If you receive over $600 in goods and services payments, we’ll automatically keep track of these payments and provide you with a 1099-K form at the end of the year. If your tax info is not complete, we’ll reach out to you with instructions. And remember, this only applies to receiving goods and services payments. Payments that you send are not reported. This info isn’t tax advice. Please consult your tax advisor about these. If you need more info, you can learn more here <https://epl.paypal-communication.com/T/v60180b9176798a56b1ef4bbc786c8/4810f11fa8324420021ef3a0bcc4/4810f11f-a832-4420-812d-ab8882a8e94e?__dU__=v0oQlZ2XmHtXgxjjiWvqAt6oUbloqyA_uK>. -73- FrankKG9H kg9hfr...@gmail.com > On May 12, 2022, at 11:10 AM, Thomas Valenti wrote: > > There is another, very important reason NOT to accept payments via PayPal > for casual, hobby related transactions. > > Effective this year, PayPal (and Venmo) now issues an IRS form 1099-K to > anyone receiving more than $600 in a calendar year. [Elecraft] Rig control error with K3S and WSJT-X on 30 meters
Over a period of time I've noticed an occasional error when transmitting FT8 on 30 meters with my K3S using WSJT-X. A couple of seconds into a transmit cycle, WSJT-X will display a "Rig control error" box, and I start hearing the rig's modulated audio output on its own speaker. This only happens on 30 meters, and not 100% of the time. Over the past day, I've done FT8 QSOs normally on various bands, but when I tried 30 meters tonight I experienced the above error several times in a row. It's occurred over time using various versions of WSJT-X. The computer is a Mac running Catalina. I tried going into WSJT-X preferences and changing Radio > Split Operation from "Rig" to "Fake It," but the error persisted. I can try changing around various parts of the setup (using a Windows PC, for example), but first was curious if anyone has seen a band-specific error like this. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Issue
Jim,. I use the "1A2R" (one amp tw0 radios) from 4O4A. I have two rigs share my KPA1500. However, if the rigs are on different bands, you do need to rely on frequency sensing by the amp. Not sure if the KPA500 does that. GL Frank, W2YK -Original Message- From: James Bennett Sent: Apr 1, 2022 11:02 AM To: Elecraft Reflector Reflector Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Issue Well, it looks like there is no simple solution to this dilemma. I was hoping to (easily) be able to use the amp with either rig while both were here in the shack. Pulling the audio cable when I want to use the IC-705 with the amp isn’t practical due to the location of the radio. I changed the “Radio” setting from K3 to Analog and Serial, but with the cables attached, the result is the same - as soon as the amp is put in OPER mode it goes into transmit state (* showing on the LCD). So, the only option for the time being is to always have the K3 powered up and on the band that I want to operate the IC-705 on. Just need to keep their frequencies separated as much as I can. [Elecraft] K3 Mini - Loss of bias - side mic jack
It appears I have lost the bias supply going to the side Mic jack on my K3 Mini. There is no bias voltage on the tip of a test cable. However there is 4.7-4.8 volts appearing on pin 6 of the 8 pin front panel mic connector. I note that turning on the Mini from a cold start I see 3.8vdc on the tip of the test cable but it only lasts for a few seconds and very quickly decays to zero. The Menu setting rP.L bIAS is configured and turning the bias off/on by tapping 2 does not effect the volatge 4.7 on pin 6 . It is always on. What do I do.? I am not thrilled about taking the Mini apart as I have ZERO technical information about how to dissaasemble it. Nor do I have a schematic to help ID where the fault may be. I have an outboard bias box that came with my CM500 so I guess I can use that in a pinch. There were slide rules that included linear as well as logarithmic scales, so you could do addition and subtraction. An example is the Pickett "Basic Math Rule" (one sided, white plastic; instruction manual copyright 1965). It included linear X and Y scales. First time posting to the reflector. Please forgive any errors. I found this little inquiry and the resulting responses fascinating. I'm old enough that: (1) I had to use a slide rule in college chemistry classes, because new-fangled electronic calculators were not allowed (2) I learned RPN as part of understanding the FORTRAN compiler on an IBM 370 (3) I had to debug the early Intel Fortran-80 compiler on their 8008 MDS system, because it was generating bad code (4) I have an HP 35s RPN calculator as my "desk calculator," along with a 10" Post 1460 Versalog slide rule, and a 10" Sun Hemmi 255 slide rule (5) I keep a 5" Pickett N600-ES slide rule (the "Apollo" slide rule) and a 5" Nestler Polymath-Duplex slide rule in my desk pencil holder (6) I have the "Pocket Slide Rule Expert" app from TestTubeGames.com on my iPhone (8 SE, ported from 4, because AT&T won't support the 4 anymore) Sorry I can't help much with Android questions (never had one), but I did enjoy the discussion of RPN and slide rules! 73, Frank KN6QEK On Sat, Jan 29, 2022 at 10:35 AM Eric Garner wrote: > I use Droid48. [Elecraft] No bars at all on KX3 digital mode transmit
After not having used my KX3 in a while, today I set it up with a laptop on the front porch to send FT8 in WSJT-X with a new AX1 antenna. I went through the procedure in Don W3FPR's document "Setting Elecraft Transceivers for soundcard digital," setting in and out audio levels on my MacBook Pro for the thumbnail-sized Sabrent USB soundcard; Mic Gain on the KX3; and the power slider in WSJT-X. CAT control is working fine, and the KX3 is in DATA A mode. The waterfall of incoming signals appears normal. I seem to be getting a good signal out, with -1 dB reported from Alaska, and -7 to -10 dB from the U.S. east coast with the above settings around midrange, and with the KX3 set for 15w out. [Elecraft] K3S line out and sidetones
If the K3S is placed in TEST mode for the purpose of CW practice without transmitting, is the CW audio available on the rear panel's Line Out jack? Or can it be sent there via a menu setting? For the purpose of a Zoom meeting, I'd like to send CW practice audio to an external USB audio interface that expects a line input. If that's not feasible using the K3S's Line Out port, I suppose it might be pulled from the headphone jack? If so, is there anything I should be looking at doing to adapt it to the audio interface's line input? MY BREAKOUT BOX HAS RXD, TXD DTR AND RTS RED. IF I START CWTYPE WHICH USES THE DTR LINE FOR CW, WHEN I SEND FROM THE KEYBOARD, THE RTS LIGHT TURNS GREEN AND THE DTR FLASHES, AND THE K3 TRANSMITS AS IT SHOULD. WHEN I START N1MM (EVEN WITH RTS = OFF AND DTR = OFF) THE TXD AND RXD FLASH GREEN ON THE BREAKOUT BOX AND THE RIG'S TX LIGHT FLASHES ON AND THE RECEIVE AUDIO PAUSES DURING THE FLASHES. IF I CLOSE N1MM, THEN THE RIG RETURNS TO NORMAL. IF I START THE K3 UTILITY PROGRAM, NOTHING HAPPENS UNTIL I TEST COMMUNICATIONS AND THEN THE TX FLASHES AS WITH N1MM (BUT ONLY ONE TIME). IF I GOT TO TERMINAL TAB THE RIG FLASHES UNTIL I LEAVE THAT MODE (AND THE RXD AND TXD LIGHTS ON THE BREAKOUT BOX FLASH) . SO I DON'T THINK IT IS A 'BAD ACTOR' - FOR SOME REASON SENDING AND RECEIVING DATA CAUSES THE TX LIGHT ON THE RIG TO FLASH. > > If that doesn't help, go here ( > https://www.eltima.com/products/serial-port-monitor/) and download the > monitor. [Elecraft] K3 TX light flashing when RTS=PTT
At Field Day this year, the K3 TX light started flashing when we loaded N1MM to use RTS=PTT to send .wav files. This only occurs when RTS=PTT is set on the rig. I thought it was a bug in N1MM but it also does this when using N3FLP's logger and the flashing corresponds to the polling rate (which N3FJP allows one to set). This is not a bug in either program since I get the same response when I use the K3 Utility and select Terminal Tab. Why would polling the rig cause the TX light to flash and the receive audio to momentarily drop? This is not a temporary initiation of the USB-RS-232 connection. And more importantly, what setting is wrong that is causing this? I have tried a different computer with a rs-232 port and I get the same result. [Elecraft] KXBC3 battery charger
I have a KX3 bought new in 2018 that has close to all of the available options with the exception of the KXBC3 battery charger. Until now I haven't paid much attention to this, as I've usually used the radio with a Pro Audio PSU when 110vac is available, otherwise with a Bioenno external battery. But I may be using it more in backpack situations, and am on the fence on whether I'd get much use out of a KXBC3. Obviously everyone has to make this decision for themselves based on their usage habits. Just curious, though, is anyone finding the internal charger really useful? Or not? It doesn't sound like the real-time clock is accurate enough to make it a reason to consider buying this. [Elecraft] K2 / ESD / Diodes D16 7 D17 replaced
Folks after Field day with another manufacturer’s radio, I have a new to me K2/100 coming in two days to use as my “small” contest radio. Short story, after using another QRP radio for an hour, I placed a K2/10 in its slot. Contacts flowed for the next three hours and my headache went away! Love the K2. (had them since 2000.) New story, the K2/100 has had it’s D16 & D17 replaced (thank you Don) so that is not going to be a problem moving forward. I have two Polyphasers in line and wonder if I have to disconnect from the coax line anymore. Also, curious, I worked on a K3 in the past and it had a BIG protector in it, cannot recall where but it was attached across the coax input if I recall. Is there any need to disconnect anymore with the two Polyphasers in line? Should I think of adding the BIG protector i saw in a K3 a few years back? Yes I know we “should” disconnect but sometimes we all forget. -73- FrankKG9H kg9hfr...@gmail.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] Why is my K3 off frequency?
Maybe I am missing the point. While you may be off by 12Hz, not sure if I would feel that I want to participate in this Net if you are called out for that. When I was brought into 6 meters I was told this was the Gentlemen's band. Most all the nets I participate in are within 100Hz at best. Also, I do recall when a current big manufacturer did not set there Bias correctly and we (somewhat) lived with it. I still recall on 6 meters contesting when you ran across a buddy that you had not talked to in years, you took the time to chat with him to see how he was. I hope that still exists! I sometimes enjoy using the older rig. In this manner the FT101ZD output goes through the KPA, then the KAT. I find the KAT plays well, a little tap of the key will cause it to auto-tune. I'd like to be able to use the KPA500 as an amplifier, but so far it won't key. I've tried the RCA Phono plug into the PA Key jack, but as long as the K3S is connected the KPA won't go into TX without the proper software signal. I did try with the software keyline interrupter a few months ago, but that prevented the K3S from switching the amp unless I also used a Y-connecter and phono cord from the K3S for amp keying. When I did the keying didn't seem as crisp, though. The K-Line is all connected as in the diagram on page 5 of the KAT500 manual. Ideally, I could turn off the K3S, switch the feedline from the K3S to the 101ZD, and have use of both the tuner and amp. Is there an easy way to do this? Perhaps one of those breakout boxes? Re: [Elecraft] Oscilloscope recs
FWIW I use three scopes for different purposes. A Siglent SDS1202X-E is my all-purpose digital scope. There's a large user community, and a lot of info on getting up to speed with it. I like capabilities such as capturing screenprints containing a lot of data overlaying the waveform graphic. I got a PicoScope (USB) when I was setting up my K3S for 630m last year. With a simple interface, the PicoScope can be a handy way of checking the phase of the voltage and current of the tx amp's output in order to match the antenna as precisely as possible. With remote access software (NoMachine in my case, TeamViewer is also widely used), the scope's display can be viewed in real-time on an Ipad outdoors. My frequency measuring Elmer, who is old school, uses an analog scope set in XY mode to watch the rotation of a Lissajous pattern. He persuaded me that an analog scope is better for this purpose than a digital one -- screen movement on the latter is in small but discernible steps, while motion is smoother on an analog scope. So I picked up a vintage Tektronix T922 for this admittedly niche purpose. Frank K6FOD On 12/8/20 11:39 AM, Louandzip via Elecraft wrote: Hi, I'm looking for a basic O scope for general HF ham use. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 lost serial comms - try factory defaults?
Hi all, A follow-up on my problem: today I’ve opened up the belly of the KAT500 and have done some testing. With no USB cable connected and the KAT500 powered up, the Q1 drain voltage is 2.39V, where I would expect 5V. Also the gate voltage is 2.30V, where I would expect it to be floating. With the power off, I’ve measure the drain-gate resistance. It’s 5.5 k ohms. Oops! My conclusion must be that Q1 has failed. So now I’m about to learn how to SMD components, hi hi. Thanks for your help so far. 73 de Frank PA4N > On 4 Dec 2020, at 17:35, Rick Bates, NK7I wrote: > > Frank, > > I would start with a complete power removal (not just off) to the KAT500 and > the computer (unplugged from power). Can I do a factory reset without having the serial comms working (so: can I do a factory reset other than from within the KAT500 Utility)? 2. What antennas are enabled after a factory reset? (Question 2 is because I have multiple antennas connected to the KAT500, and if the factory defaults would be that only ANT1 would be enabled, I would lose functionality until I’ve got the KAT500 repaired…) Hope the collective wisdom of the group can help me out. 73 de Frank PA4N __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

As you know, there's a complementary section of the Telescope in South Africa. Naturally we're all excited about the prospects of the SKA, with the pathfinders having already done much good work. However, despite many advances in signal processing over the years there is still a place for very large single aperture telescopes, such as the Chinese FAST instrument and (formerly) Arecibo. I might add that a good deal of the impetus for FAST came from the Chinese participation in the SKA consortium, a body in which the US originally participated but later withdrew from. While the millions of dollars do indeed mount up, the direct benefits and spin-offs from astronomy are substantial, even putting aside the basic science outcomes. I certainly hope the US is able to continue on its distinguished path in radio astronomy and, SKA and FAST aside, there are many other prospects - on and off-shore - for ensuring that happens. Like all science, though, it relies on the enlightened being able to spread the good word! 73, Peter (VK6HP). __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to fscol...@mindspring.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

I've read various messages here on pad replacements for these and other headphones, comments on various pad types including OEM vs velour, etc. The one thing I'm stuck on that this point is that, on vendor sites like Amazon, I see reviews where it's mentioned that pads can cause a significant change in the headphones' sound. I've noticed for various pad types. So a question for MDR-7506 owners who are picky about sound -- can you recommend a specific pad that definitely doesn't cause any change in that regard? If a 2-meter module is installed, as is the case with mine, I wonder if the automated calibration using the KX3 Utility flies through all the bands including that one? I wouldn't want to start pressing buttons and find out the wrong way. The reason for my concern is that I only have one dummy load, the MFJ-260C. I'd like to get ahold of the Oak Hills Research RFL-100 mentioned here recently, but unfortunately when I tried to order one a few days ago his website said all sales had been suspended indefinitely due to COVID. I guess I can either scrounge another dummy load, or do the calibration band-by-band manually. Re Mark's questions about the Bird 43 and slugs, I do have an older Bird that I don't trust a great deal, but this one was bought new about a year ago, and the slugs are the same vintage or newer. I can try them out with other radios. As for Walter's point about the ATU, the results are mighty odd. I just set the KX3 to 40 meters with 15 watts out, appropriate slug in the Bird 43, set ATU to bypass and started keying. The power out dropped to about 5w. I then set ATU to auto and tapped the ATU Tune button. With the radio still set to 15w out, the Bird now peaked at about 25w! Is it plausible that antenna tuning activity within the KX3 could actually increase the TPO by ~5x? Or does that cast even more suspicion on the Bird? [Elecraft] Frequency offset with K144XV?
Today I installed a new K144XV 2-meter module and K144RFLK reference lock board in my K3S. While trying various experiments to put it through some paces, I set the radio up with WSJT-X and configured it to listen for FT8 on 144.174 MHz, after I manually added that frequency to WSJT-X's menu. I notice that when I use the band pulldown on the WSJT-X top page to select 2m, it briefly displays 144.174 000 as the frequency, but then quickly changes to 144.173 998. The frequency on the K3S's display, however, still appears as 144.174.000. I tried this a couple of times in a row, with the same result. (Not an elbow-jog in this case.) I assume this has to do with frequency offsets. Although the written label on the K144XV case indicates that tests at Elecraft showed an offset of +3.83 (Hz, I assume) for the 144 MHz subband and +1.95 (Hz) for the 146 Mhz subband, based on the instructions for the K144RFLK board I ignored those written values. Instead, I went to Config:XVn OFS, hit 0 and noted that a REFLOCK value of -2.34 (Hz, I again assume) appears on the K3S display. This, I gather, is derived from the radio's master K3REF oscillator. So, two questions. First, does it seem likely to others (as it does to me) that the 2-Hz difference showing up in WSJT-X is caused by this -2.34 (Hz) offset? Second, is there a way to resolve this so that the frequencies shown in WSJT-X and on the K3S agree? [Elecraft] K3 on motorboat
As with most everything on a boat, antenna and counterpoise systems are a compromise. You have to work with what you have. I agree that an elevated feedpoint is not the best, but on a fishing trawler support rigging for the outriggers moves up and down. With the antenna mounted on the mast it is out of harm's way( except for lighting ). There are all kinds of scenarios on work boats that have to be taken into account when installing a system and there will be compromises. Commercial and most other users don't have the luxury as, Hams do, to experiment and tweak systems. They just want the system to work. There are accepted practices that are proven to work well and if followed they will perform. I think that if you visit a yacht basin or commercial boat dock that you will see that the vertical is the antenna of choice unless the craft is large enough to support a longwire but will probably also have a vertical. Vertical antennas built for marine use,if properly installed on a yacht will look just fine and be no more distracting than radar, nav system, TV or Sat phone antennas. It's been a pleasure conversing with everyone, but I have to bow out. I have to travel and won't have internet for a while so I will say 73's to all. Please stay safe and be not afraid. [Elecraft] K3 0n motorboat
I used the wrong terminology when I was speaking about antenna system grounding on a boat. What I actually meant was a counterpoise system. I agree that a vertical dipole works well but would be difficult to install permanently on a small boat. A vertical is most often used with a tuner. There are standard mounts and they are pretty easy to install and are sturdy and well suited for marine use. I also agree that all structures should be bonded to the counterpoise system. Some of the boat builders(Hatteras ,Bertram .etc) would put copper screen into the fiberglass layups of the flying bridge decks and roofs with a stud connected to it so that it could be tied into the system. On commercial trawlers the antenna would be mounted on the mast about 30 or 35 ft above the water. It was fed with a wire about 25 or 30 ft long so it was actually a 55 or 60 ft end-fed. With the outriggers lowered and acting as radials, the trawl doors and cables in the water and everything else bonded together, it is a pretty good counterpoise system. 73, Frank KB4VU __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] K3 on motorboat.
Having been in the marine electronics business I was able to successfully install many HF radios on boats from large steel commercial fishing boats to a small 28 ft fiberglass fishing boat and sailboats. Anything metal , engine, fuel tanks, rudder posts, thru hulls, morse control cables, intercoolers outside of the hull, rub rail sections jumpered together to form one continuous loop. Dynaplates help but will not work well as the only source of ground. I once saw a carbon brush riding thru spring tension on a prop shaft, tying the prop to ground. It can be tricky as sometimes you get ground loops and you must be aware of currents that can cause electrolysis. For the antenna we primarily used a 23 ft whip, sometimes on large vessels a longwire. This was before synthesized radios and autouners. My favorite radio was the Drake TRM which had a built in manual tuner and a 50 ohm output if you wanted to use a trapped vertical. On commercial fishing boats you had to leave the dock so that the outriggers could be lowered and trawl doors put in the water as this changed the tuning quite a bit from being at the dock. Interestingly enough I think the toughest time I had tuning was on an 85 ft steel shrimp boat even with all that metal. . __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

In the initial test, which produced the hum, the power source for the KX3 was a Pro Audio Engineering PAE-Kx33 low-RFI supply. This PSU was plugged into the same outlet as a variety of other shack gear, some powered on. The only other things connected to the KX3 were (a) an antenna intended for field use, and (b) the CM500. I noticed that when I touched the shield on the antenna coax's BNC connector with my finger, the hum diminished substantially. I then unplugged the PSU and replaced it with a car battery charged to 12.01v. Now the hum appeared to be completely gone. So, if I were to keep using the KX3 within the shack, it sounds as though a thorough grounding/bonding workup would probably fix the problem. I'm in the process of working through http://k9yc.com/GroundingAndAudio.pdf. I was mostly curious why the CM500's mic produced the hum, but the handheld mic that came with the KX3 didn't. [Elecraft] Hum on TX audio w/ CM500 headset on KX3
For my CM500 headset with the KX3, I referred to Walter Underwood K6WRU's blog posts to order the adapter allowing the CM500 mic plug and a PTT switch to share the radio's mic jack. I also followed his checklist from a second blog post to set TX EQ and mic bias. While adjusting the mic gain with the TX power set to 0.0, I noticed hum on my audio from the CM500 mic. This was audible regardless of whether I had the PTT cable attached, or if I left it detached and tapped the XMIT button. The hum also appeared regardless of whether I used the CM500 phones vs other headphones. If I unplug the adapter and use the handheld mic that came with the KX3, the hum does *not* appear. Any suggestions on what I should look at to run this down? Thanks and 73, Frank K6FOD On 5/5/20 9:15 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: On the KX3, look in the manual for the MIC jack connections. Re: [Elecraft] CM500 headset on K3S and KX3?
Thanks for the clear instructions from Don, and the helpful suggestions from everyone else. Piecing it all together, will this basically work?: -- On the K3S, plug the CM500's mike and phone plugs into the respective jacks on the rig's rear panel. Wire a momentary-contact switch to an RCA plug inserted into the rig's PTT IN jack to serve as a manual PTT switch. -- On the KX3, plug the headset's mike and phone plugs into the respective jacks, and use a momentary-contact switch on a mono-style 1/8" plug in the ACC2 jack as a manual PTT switch. The only thing I'm concerned about is the issue of mono vs stereo plugs. For example, the CM500's mike plug has stereo-style contacts, whereas the mic in jack on the K3S is marked "mono." There aren't any issues there? On other points, if I were going all-in on becoming a regular phone operator I might look at other headsets such as the Heils. But what I'm looking at is being a bit player on a couple of nets very occasionally at most, so the CM500 seemed like a decent option. Re VOX vs PTT, I can understand the convenience of the former, but being an occasional throat-clearer I wouldn't want to become a distractions on those nets. Thanks again, Frank On 5/5/20 4:49 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: Frank, For the K3S, just plug the microphone and headphone plugs into the rear panel jacks. Set the MIC SEL to RP and turn bias on. For the KX3. the easy way is to just turn MIC BTN off and plug it in. That microphone needs bias, and it will be supplied by the digital DC that normally is used for the MIC Button functions. The harder way for the KX3 is to make an adapter (but it is not that hard) Be aware that, like most computer microphones, the tip and the ring of the plug are wired together - so if you make an adapter, you must use a stereo jack so the audio is not shorted to ground. If you make an adapter, you can include a connection for a PTT switch, but without that, you can put the KX3 into transmit with the XMIT button. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/5/2020 7:31 PM, Frank O'Donnell wrote: Phone newbie here. [Elecraft] CM500 headset on K3S and KX3?

Is Finkleman the guy with the 'half glasses' ?? Took my test from him in 1966, as did my father just before WWII... 73, Frank, W2YK At 01:59 AM 5/1/2020, Steve Lawrence via Elecraft wrote: FCC office in lower Manhattan. Re: [Elecraft] K3S poor CW keying further investigation
I agree with Bob, TAX. if it doesn't have the connectors you need, then don't buy it. The message is pretty clear if one has the needed connectors for that power level and the other doesn’t. One sits on the shelf of the vendor, the other one flys off the shelf. -73- FrankKG9H kg9hfr...@gmail.com > On Apr 25, 2020, at 11:24 AM, Martin Sole wrote: > > DISP and rotate vfo B for desired measurement option. > > Martin, HS0ZED > > > > On 25/04/2020 23:19, N4ZR wrote: >> That's right - my focus was (perhaps too narrowly) on the behavior of the >> power supply under load, not on losses in the system.
