Re: [Elecraft] 43 Ft Vertical and Elecraft Tuners

2013-09-02 Thread gosier

Hi Jim !!

I have a ZeroFive 40 meter monoband vertical with 60-12 ft radials on a
radial plate and use only the tuner on my K1. I can easily tune 40 , 20 and
15 but 30 I can get down to 1.6 to 1 (still acceptable) Feedline is RG-8X
that is 75 ft long. Used this setup in many DX contests with great success
along with many stateside contests.

Subject: [Elecraft] 43 Ft Vertical and Elecraft Tuners

43 ft verticals have become a popular antenna, and while they have some
strong points, they present a very high SWR on most bands, so they
require a serious tuner to get them to load.

I'd like to know of any stations using a 43 Ft vertical as a multi-band
antenna using nothing but an Elecraft antenna tuner for matching -- that
is, no baluns, transformers, loading coils, or additional matching
networks. I'd like to know the bands on which you are able to match it
well enough to get full power from the rig (or the power amp). I'd like
to know if the tuner is located at the base of the antenna, or, if in
the shack, the length of feedline between antenna and tuner.

Thanks and 73, Jim K9YC

[Elecraft] the K1 and CQ WPX ....

2013-05-29 Thread gosier
Even with the strange conditions I ended up with my highest score ever !!! I
was single-op QRP 40 meters only. Had 144 Qs , 139 multipliers for 68,249
points. The K1 did a outstanding job !! The tones of the CW signals were rough
due to the big Solar Fart and made tough copy here in NNY. The 200hz filter was
up to the task with some rather steep skirts to keep out most of the
unnecessary QRM. The K1 worked without a hitch and the proof is in the score !!
Thanks Elecraft !!!

Dave,

I spotted these in the accessories section of my local T-Mobile store. Might
they work? I picked up a couple on impulse, and they have great sound for
such tiny enclosures. They about 2 inches tall and maybe 1.5 inches in
diameter. They are battery powered, with a computer serving as the battery
charger (via a USB port). Supposedly you get six to eight hours off of a
charge.

If something like this looks useful, and they don't ship to the UK (and
T-Mobile stores there don't carry them), let me know and I can snag one for
your and send it along...

With best regards,

Bummer! They only ship to continental US, Puerto Rico and APO.

Ah well, I guess I have enough sets of headphones, anyway.

UK guys, any recommendations for small, amplified, mains-driven speakers for
the KX3, please?

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Strange signal on 17 meter CW

2013-03-10 Thread gosier
The Spanish 5 number stations have been on since the 1960s along with
English and German versions. I was a Pop Comm reader and column contributor
with Harry Helms back then. Some transmissions were believed to be Mossad or
of Cuban origin. Also Jupiter , Florida and a military base there. They
would start with a 3 digit number repeated several times a pause they 5
digit groups. At the end would be a pause then ende. 90% were done with a
female voice. Also a split Spanish 3 with a pause then the other 2 digits
was rarer but heard. Never has been a full explanation .

Subject: [Elecraft] [OT] Strange signal on 17 meter CW

Hi,

This afternoon, Saturday 9 March 2013 at about 5pm PST (approx 10 March
01:10Z UTC), I heard a strange USB signal in the CW portion of 17 meters.
The frequency was 18.07415 MHz. A recorded female human voice was reciting
a string of five-number codes -- in Spanish. Like 94514 65443 98713 ... .
This went on for some minutes (I don't know how long it had been going when
I first heard it). Then it stopped and was replaced by some sort of
multi-tone signal. Then that stopped, and the transmission ended.

Did anyone hear this? Is this something that is well known? I ask here
since this list is full of attentive CW operators one of whom might have
heard it.

Oliver

[Elecraft] K1 IS FANTASTIC !!!!!!

2013-02-18 Thread gosier
Used the K1 in the ARRL DX INTERNATIONAL and had a INCREDIBLE time 304 Qs
, 141 multipliers , for a claimed score of 128,592. 50 countries on 40 meters ,
46 countries on 20 meters and 45 countries on 15 meters. My only wish would
have been a filter like 100hz instead of 200hz as the narrowest. The K1 to me
is a very capable contest rig !! Used a K1EL keyboard keyer and not my usual
bug. And the antenna was a ZeroFive 40 meter monoband vertical with 60-12 ft
radials. The antenna tunes 40-10 with the internal tuner very well. Had the
best time in a contest in years !!!

And thanks Don for the superb job you did in getting it up to speed

Many thanks Elecraft !!!

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 Speaker Mod

2012-09-02 Thread gosier
I have had great luck with the small amplified speakers from Rad Shack or
E-Bay. Shaped like tiny men they put out incredible audio and are
rechargable by your computer USB port. I have several so I never run out.
Charge is good for about 5 hours I guess. Use them with my K1 now and they
are superb !!!

Just took a glance only at Mouser online and they stock speakers down to an
inch or less diameter. Most of the ones they list are 2.4 kHz sounders
which you want to steer clear of unless that is what use like to listen
too. But I did see a 22mm speaker with good bandwidth.

So the question is who makes those nano speakers?

 Anyone .anyone?
