Re: [Elecraft] K3 Fault 6 and loss of power control

2024-03-08 Thread Mike Cizek W0VTT
Hello Pete,

This happens to my K3S regularly. After it spent WAY too much time back at the
mother ship three years ago without them being able to reproduce the fault (RSA
#10260, in case Keith is reading this), I was finally able to narrow down the
cause.

I can reproduce the fault by going from FL2 to FL3, FL3 to FL4 or by exiting
the QRQ mode. This makes me think it may be a firmware problem. I'm running
v5.67, the most recent version. I can't figure out how to force a load of an
earlier version to see if that cures the problem.

Has anyone else experienced this? I can't be the only one.

Today I started seeing this in my K3 driving a KPA-1500. It only needs around
30-34 watts to drive it to full power on CW, but when I set the K3's power to
that, and everything looks fine, occasionally the K3 displays Fault 6 on its
panel and causes the KPA-1500 to fault, displaying 65 watts input on the amp's
display and well over 1500 watts on the power bargraph.

I can't find any reference to Fault 6 in the manual for the K3 - can anyone
clue me in? Is something dying in the K3?

CW is also the only way to go for pedestrian mobile FD, which I did for a

Re: [Elecraft] Power spike early K3

2023-05-22 Thread Mike Cizek W0VTT
My K3s has this problem, but it only happens intermittently. When driving
the KPA1500, there would be a spike of about 70w. Drive level was between
20 and 25 watts. The K3s spent three months at Elecraft and they could not
fix it. I finally discovered two things that caused the power spike:
1. Exiting the CW QRQ mode; either by turning on RIT or by using the menu.
2. Narrowing the passband from XFIL 3 to XFIL 4 (1000 Hz to 400 Hz in my
case.), either with the XFIL button or the Width control.
These appear to be the only things that cause the power spike.

This leads me to believe it's a firmware problem (v 5.67, the most recent).
I tried going back to an earlier FW version, but could not figure out how to
load it. It doesn't look like there will be any new FW updates for the K3
series.

Hi,

We have an early serial K3 which has got an issue with power spikes. I have
done a TX gain calibration without it making a difference. The spike happens
mainly when you have changed to a new band and during the first
transmission. After that the spike is a lot smaller and not much of an
issue.

Anybody have any ideas of what this could be because of? It kind of makes it
impossible to run a solid state amplifier on the radio and probably not good
for the tube amplifiers either.

Re: [Elecraft] Using KIO3B for digital and AFSK RTTY

2023-05-03 Thread Mike Cizek W0VTT
Hello Pete,

Plug in the USB cable between your K3 and computer. The computer will (should)
recognize the K3 sound card as USB Audio CODEC and install drivers
automatically. In WSJT-X, select USB Audio CODEC as your microphone and
speakers.

You can also do radio control through the same USB port, but if you want to do
both at the same time you need a port sharing program like LP Bridge.

[Elecraft] KX1 For Sale

2023-04-25 Thread Mike Cizek W0VTT
Greetings,

I’m embarrassed to admit how little I have used this radio. It’s been
sitting in the box for over ten years.

Elecraft KX1 #1797 transceiver in like new condition with:

KXAT1 Automatic Antenna Tuner

KXB3080 30 and 80 Meter Adapter

KXPD1 Plug-In Keyer Paddle

Pelican 1060 Case

All manuals

Purchased at Dayton in May 2007, built in May and June of that year.
Recently checked out on the bench and on the air. About 1.5w out with fresh
AA batteries; 3~3.5w out on 13.8v. Everything appears to be working
correctly and properly – HOWEVER – since the radio is 16 years old and has
been sitting unused for over ten years, I am offering it as is with no
guarantees. Pictures available here:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/UWT3ga3Rmc1HSgfj7 More pictures and info
available on request.

Price : $500 including Priority Mail shipping anywhere in the US. Overseas
shipping available at buyer’s expense.

Thank you.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Low 40m Output

2022-12-02 Thread Mike Cizek W0VTT
Greetings,

Working on a KPA 500, #2441. All bands except 40m work properly; 40m output
is about 125w. Testing into a dummy load:

Drive level: ~20w for all bands.

Voltage and current levels all seem normal; lower PA current and slightly
less voltage drop on 40m.

SWR back to exciter (K3s) is 1:1 on all bands

Output SWR on the internal meter reads 1:1, even on 40m

No fault messages on any band, no smoke, no funny noises.

The most obvious (to me) culprit is the 40m low pass filter. I was hoping
to find an obviously fried cap or coil, but everything looks OK. A web
search shows some folks reporting similar single-band faults, but they all
have obviously fried components (usually a cap) on the RF or LPF boards. Is
there anything else that could be at fault, other than the LPF circuit? It
appears everything else is common to all bands. I'm not sure my test gear
is sufficient to check the components in circuit.

Thank you.

I actually designed and build a K3IO "ethernet" replacement KIO3
board...before the USB version was available. I probably have the only
"ethernet" K3 on earth. I may revive that card and replace the ethernet
stuff with USB parts so that I can fix some of these K3's laying around. I
think there is ZERO chance that Elecraft will release parts/ boards/ gerbers
for these parts. There is nothing in it for them to do so and may cause
maintenance headaches for them. Some of us can pick up the slack though...

I have also. The K3IO module is pretty fragile, it seems. Of all the
requests I've seen here on the reflector over the years for a replacement
item, the K3IO tops the list from my memory ... you can't just buy a
replacement from Mouser or Digi-Key like you can the input diodes. And when
it goes bad, the K3 becomes essentially useless for contesting.

I keep saying that Elecraft should pass on the PC board artwork and
component specs (I assume that not all of them are standard devices) for key
discontinued modules to someone who might be interested in offering
replacement as a 3rd party. It's one of my key gripes with Elecraft that
they seem to have no interest in doing so.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 strange overshoot

2022-02-11 Thread Mike Cizek WØVTT
Ahoj Petr,

I have a similar problem with my K3s. Drive power for the amp is 20 to 25w and
the power spike is always around 70w. Elecraft had the radio for three months
and claimed they could not reproduce the fault. I discovered later that it only
occured when I was in CW QRQ mode and that I could “force” the fault by either
exiting QRQ mode or changing to a narrower filter. I sent that info to
Elecraft, but they never replied. This happens on all bands except 6m.

Thinking it might be a firmware issue, I tried loading an older FW version but
have not been able to convince K3 Utility to do that.

Greetings,

I have an XV222 for sale.

Set up to work with 1mW drive from a K3. Testing on the bench, it meets
factory specs, but in operation it's a little flaky. It works OK most of
the time on CW and SSB, but is not really stable enough for digi mode
operation. Whoever built it had no business ever picking up a soldering
iron. It has the crystal oven and I have both the assembly and operating
manuals. Pictures in a Google Drive folder here:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/p7mZY6fgMRf5FgFA6

Asking $200 or best offer. Free shipping in the US via Priority Mail.
Overseas shipping (well.international shipping, nobody "overseas" has 222
MHz except Somalia) available at buyer's expense.

Thank you.

pretty good test gear. Prices include shipping in the USA. Pictures
available on request.

XV222 #1 - very well built, works properly, includes the bypass capacitor
change (Builder's alert 30 APR 2009) $350

VW222 #2 - works OK most of the time, but looks just awful inside. Whoever
built this one had no business ever picking up a soldering iron. It's fine
for casual SSB and CW operating, but not stable enough for digi modes. $225

Also - M Squared 222-5WL Yagi. 15 elements on a 24' boom. In good shape
with all new fasteners. $150 picked up in southeastern MN, or we can talk
about shipping.

Thank you.

[Elecraft] XV222 Mods Question

2021-06-10 Thread Mike Cizek W0VTT
Greetings,

I recently purchased a used XV222 that had some modifications done in the
local oscillator circuit. The construction was very sloppy, but transverter
works OK most of the time. Power output is adequate with good audio on SSB
and receiver sensitivity seems OK. Sometimes the xvtr goes in to parasitic
oscillation. I can stop the oscillation by touching certain parts of the
case, and it will operate normally for a while. Weird. I cannot find any
documentation about the mod on line.

It appears that two 2.2 pF caps have been added (on the bottom side of the
board) in parallel with C12 (10pF), and the collector of Q1 goes above the
board directly to Z4 instead of into its hole in the PCB. Has anyone seen
this mod or the reason for it documented anywhere?

Thank you.

I have attempted to search the Elecraft website for one without success and
have even entered an enquiry but have had no response.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Jim, that’s an interesting bit of information. Is that the case even for people

I have a KPA-1500 amp in our station, and I use it on a daily basis in a remote
configuration to operate our station. Fan noise is not an issue here because we
are not in the same location as the amplifier. Further, we do mostly digital
modes (MSK144, FT8, Q65, etc.) which are high duty cycle. I mostly use the
remote app to force the fan speed to a higher level than the factory fan curve
to help keep the amp cool. It would be nice if the KPA-1500 FW had a few fan
profiles to choose from to help keep the amp cool when running high duty cycle
modes. This way, operators such as myself who do a lot of high-duty cycle modes
could keep their KPA-1500’s cooler and extend the life of the amplifier.

Re: [Elecraft] Now looking for a K3S KTCXO3-1

2021-03-10 Thread Mike Cizek W0VTT
Greetings -

I have a KTCXO3, a Chinese copy, and the standard oscillator. I tested the
standard and Chinese ones against WWV at 10 MHz using the Freq Cal mode in
WSJT-X over a four hour period. This isn't exactly a laboratory grade test,
but is the best I can do.

The total error for the Chinese TCXO was 1.26 Hz
Total error for the stock oscillator was 0.98 Hz
I'll test the KTCXO3 later today.
I'm not a math major, but that looks like about 0.1PPM error. Tests were
run after the K3s had been on for a few hours.

I don't have the tools to measure phase noise. Would having a local with a
panadaptor look at my transmitted signal using the different oscillators be
sufficient?

This is the Chinese oscillator I bought from Ebay:

If the Chinese TCXOs for the K3 are anything like the ones for Kenwood I
have measured, they exhibit much higher phase noise. That will result in
much increased transmit phase noise. That will interfere with anyone trying
to listen close to you in location and frequency.

The K3 is a good neighbor, which is one of the reasons it is prized for
DXpeditions and Multi Radio contest stations.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S KTCXO3-1 possible problem

2021-03-09 Thread Mike Cizek W0VTT
Hello Gary,

Elecraft reported having problems with the TCXOs a while back. Mine isn't very
well behaved, either, but it stays within a few Hertz compared to WWV on 10 MHz.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3S KTCXO3-1 possible problem

I have a K3S, purchased factory built, February 2019. This included the 1 ppm
TCXO3-1-F option.

A few months later, I noticed that SSB signals heard on 50.125.000 MHz all
sounded a bit off frequency. Hence, I performed a reference oscillator
calibration, using method 2. Because of my relatively short distance to WWV,
the variability in the signal strength made its use difficult. Instead, I used
a GPS disciplined TCXO as my 10 MHz standard. The GPSDO had been on for
several hours before any calibration and the transceiver had been on for, at
least, three hours. The frequency display on the K3S was set to 10.000.000
MHz. Beats were displayed on a Weston VU meter, driven by an opamp, connected
across the external speaker output. This allows beats to be easily seen, that
are less than one per second.

The REF CAL as received from the factory was 49.379.766 On 7/10/2019, I changed
the REF CAL setting to 49.379.448 (I chalked this change up to possible
crystal aging.) On 11/30/2019, the REF CAL setting was changed to 49.379.110 On
3/1/2020 the REF CAL setting was changed to 49.378.926 On 1/16/2021 REF CAL was
changed to 49.378.495 On 1/30/2021 REF CAL was changed to 49.378.484 On
2/22/2021 REF CAL was changed to 49.378.508 (the first time the setting has
been increased)

I have also noticed a change of several Hz in the beat note between the
transceiver having been on for half an hour and having been on for three or
four hours. This seems odd behavior to me for a high stability, 1 ppm TCXO.
The transceiver is in a room, with a temperature of 70, plus or minus, 3
degrees Fahrenheit. There is nothing on top of the transceiver and there is
plenty of space below, behind and on either side of the radio. There are no
other heat sources near the transceiver.

Am I being overly critical, or do you think this is unusual behavior for a
KTCXO3-1?

I posed this question to Elecraft tech support. The reply did not address my
question as to whether this KTCXO3-1 is misbehaving. The reply only said that
“We have no KTCXO3-1 and have no orders to restock at this time.” The tech,
who replied, also gave me sourcing information for, apparently, the oscillator
part on the board.

Thanks in advance for any time taken to reply to my post.

Gary, KØCX

Subject: [Elecraft] Signals wild...signals caged

My son is an avid birdwatcher. As his understudy, I've learned the names of
the birds that hang out in our yard and gather at local wetlands.

On a recent walk we saw one of our favorites, an American kestrel, a small
raptor that terrorizes lizards and mice in the foothills on both sides of
the San Francisco Bay. The bird's coloration is a surprising mix of blue,
brown, orange, yellow, and white, adorned with an array of black dots.

Finding a kestrel in the wild is like stumbling upon a rare gem, lying on
the ground.

The bird reminded me that when I was a kid, I often hunted for gems of a
different sort: DX. I was a novice, and in the early 1970s, novices were
limited to working DX Of The First Kind. CW.

Like brightly colored birds, each CW signal arriving from a distant land was
unique.

Several factors were involved. In those days most ops used bugs or straight
keys, so each operator had an identifiable fist. Rigs were not as stable as
they are now, yielding timbres with a motley mix of buzz, drift, and chirp.
Add fading and noise to the mix, and you had no shortage of audible
intrigue.

In fact -- trust me on this one -- RST reports haven't always ended with a
dependable "9." I once gave out an RST of 332. I'll never forget that poor
soul's chaotic whoop, best described as a singular blend of yodel and kazoo.

Over time I became something of a CW pathologist, keenly aware of each
station's affliction, including my own. These variations were useful. You
could tell who you'd already worked. If you were a regular on the novice
bands, you'd even get to know fellow travelers by their frequencies, since
many, like me, were "rock-bound" -- slaves to a handful of crystals. VFOs
were starting to make an appearance in novice gear...but see "chirp," above.

Now, in 2021, the chirp is gone.

CW signals still have many distinguishing traits, though. These include
speed, keying weight, the operator's affectations and favored prosigns, and
direction-specific propagation anomalies.

Here's where we stretch the central metaphor to just about max.

If randomly occurring CW signals on our bands are creatures of the wild,
then...are FT8 stations the occupants of an urban zoo? Don't get me wrong:
It's a pleasant place, with free tram rides, open 24 hours a day. The
diversity of species is unprecedented.

But imagine, on a given day, that you've sampled the zoo's exotic offerings,
memorized the brochure, bought the t-shirt, and partaken of the sumptuous
snack bar. What next?

Take a walk on the wild side.

Yank the cord and jump off the tram at an unmarked stop. Hop the fence. Work
your way down the unpaved trail from the upper mesa to the open savannah,
then sit on the ten-foot wall and dangle your feet over the edge.

Welcome to the ecosystem of beings who are free to roam. They may be
camouflaged, blending into the background. And if you listen carefully,
you'll hear a hundred variations on their timeless song...CQ.

Wayne

IF you are using the USB connection to the computer, you need to either
switch to the RS 232 port and use that;  OR take the cover off the K3 and
move the little slide switch on the KIO3B board to the opposite position.
You can then use the USB method.   After you have re-installed the firmware,
move the switch back to the other position.

IF your KIO3B board does not have the small switch,  it is an older board
and you have to use a RS232 cable.  Check with Elecraft, and they will
probably switch boards to the newer one with the switch.

I had the same issue awhile back.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and WSJT-X Split operation.

2018-06-29 Thread Mike Cizek W0VTT
Hello Rick,

You really DO need to use some sort of frequency control, either split or
fake-it, especially in F mode. When you transmit the lower audio tones,
their harmonics and distortion will still be in your audio passband and be
transmitted along with the desired tones. The purpose of using proper rig
control is to keep the audio tones above 1500 Hz so the harmonics and
distortion are out of your transmit passband.

I run WSJT-X via HRD rig control (SignaLink audio) for CAT PTT (and VFO)
on the K3.

I do NOT set WSJT-X for any split.  The (sole) VFO doesn't move once set.

In everyday FT8, it's fine to let the audio determine actual frequency
(the other uses one 'tone', I stay on mine or not, think of it as cross
band ops).

In hound mode, the change in 'tone' is determined by the program (once
ack'ed by the fox); no VFO shift is required.

It's been flawless without moving a VFO (except when initially selecting
a band or changing to the fox frequency).  No added commands to the K3,
life is simple.

There is a designed lag from keyup to actual generation of tone, which
is fine, it lets all the hardware (amps, pre-amps) have time to get
'safe' if needed (the KPA line doesn't require it).

Yes, WSJT-X whines every startup in hound configuration that it 'needs'
split, but that isn't the case in reality.  This setup works, it's
simple and simple ROCKS on any day.

Mike,

Order the SMT1B - PIN diode on carrier board p/n E120014 from Elecraft
and mount it as shown on page 60 of the latest K2 manual.
Note that you also will need to have MCU firmware at 2.04. If yours is
lower than that, also order FWK2MCIO.
The current firmware is 2.04r, and if you are dealing with a K2 below SN
3000 and have not done the sidetone source change as indicated in the
KPA100 or KIO2 instructions, you must add it to use 2.04r because the
sidetone source is locked at U8-4. That is the only difference between
2.04P and 2.04r.

The rest of the components on the Control Board can be mounted as
indicated in the Keying Waveshape Mod documentation. If you do not have
that document, send me an off-list email and I can send it to you.

I have been installing that mod on all the K2s that I upgrade.

[Elecraft] K-3 Transmit Problem: no RF Output

2016-03-26 Thread Mike Cizek W0VTT
Greetings -

My K3 has had low output for quite some time, maybe 60-90w depending on the
band. I always meant to look into it and fix it someday. Now it has no RF
output at all. (Just in time for VK0 and FT/J!) I believe I have traced the
problem to two transistors on the LPA board (driver stages), Q4 and Q5, but
am not confident they are the only parts at fault. I'm hoping someone else
has had the same problem and found the solution.

I tried re-seating all the connectors, with a drop of DeoxIt on the pins,
and running TX gain cal. 5w and 50w failed immediately, but 100 mW is OK on
all bands.

KPA-100 was removed, the PA jumper installed between P67A & P67B, and the
config menu was set to KPA not installed. Measurements were taken with an
old Tek 2465. DC voltages are all correct.

Measuring with a scope - I get a nice clean sine wave going in to the LPA
board at P71A pin 3. Most bands are 1.2 to 2.2v P-P, but 6m is only 0.6v.
The output of Q1 is a little distorted. The output of Q2 varies from
10-25v, depending on the band, and is also a little distorted. Signals at
the base of Q4 and Q5 are back down to 3v. Output of Q4 and Q5 is a few mV.
Changing the drive control has no affect on signal levels.

Is 1 to 2 v P-P the correct drive level at P71A? What is an acceptable
variation in power level between different bands? Should the drive control
change signal levels here, or does that happen later in the circuit? I am
also concerned about the distortion on the wave forms. Q4 and Q5 are
available from RF Parts for $5 apiece, so replacing them will likely be my
next stap.

Thank you.

[Elecraft] Pelican case size for KX-1?

2007-06-11 Thread Mike Cizek W3MC
What size Pelican case do folks use for the KX-1?? I seem to remember it is
the 1060, but its internal height is barely more than the KX-1 itself. Does
this provide enough clearance to protect the tuning knob? For people using
this case - do you put any foam beneath the KX-1, or just let it sit on the
bottom of the case? Thanks.

No, but it will come with a wrist strap mount for the K3. At only 8
pounds, wrist-mounting of the rig won't kill you (like our 55-pound
competitors), but it'll still give you a great upper-body workout :)

I am pretty sure that was promised in the Popular Mechanics article, too.

Re: [Elecraft] More Questions: K3

2007-04-28 Thread Mike Cizek W3MC

Hello Lyle - here are a few more questions:

1. How does receive performance compare to the K-2; is the raw performance
much better, or are there just more features and flexibility?

2. You said RF Gain is seperate for main sub rcvr? There are 2 AF Gain
controls but only one RF - how does this work?

3. Are the roofing filters regular xtal filters - they are in the 8 MHZ
IF - and the DSP filtering in the 15 kHz IF?

4. Is TX general coverage or ham bands only? I'm a Navy MARS op.

5. How fast is the QSK compared to the K-2?

6. There are RX ANT IN and OUT jacks on the back panel - what is the OUT
jack for - another receiver?

Thanks for all the answers this morning. Hope you don't get karpal tunnel
from all the typing.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100: Rev D manual to build Rev C kit?

2007-03-19 Thread Mike Cizek W3MC
I'm in the middle of building the KPA100 I bought last spring, and decided
it best to build the board as is, then install the upgrade parts. There
are only 16 of them, so it shouldn't add too much time. I built up to page
28 in the manual, and am now waiting for the upgrade kits to arrive. Also
ordered one for an older K2/100. GL.

Subject: [Elecraft] KPA100: Rev D manual to build Rev C kit?

I'm preparing to build a KPA100 from an old kit. My board is marked Rev
B, and my manual is Rev C (with Dec 14, 2004 errata sheet). My manual
seems to include all mods from the KPA100 Shield Upgrade and the
KPA100MODKT. However, my manual does not include all of the changes from
the KPA100UPKT (Oct 21, 2006) Upgrade Instructions. I'm finding that
integrating these instructions into my manual is very tedious and I'm
concerned about making errors. Is there any reason I can't assemble from
the latest (Rev D) manual?

Thanks
Dick, K0KK

[Elecraft] re: Evaluating antennas

2007-02-21 Thread Mike Cizek W3MC
I absolutely and completely agree with Ken, despite having only half of his
experience. (30 years, and only two towers - 100' 125' with six rotatable
beams). The old fashioned open wire dipole - doublet to our UK brethren -
when fed with a proper balanced tuner - is extremely efficient and
effective. Read what Maxwell has to say about them in his book
Reflections, or look at results with an antenna modelling program. The
80m dipole at 65', when used on the higher bands, will have gain equal to a
3 element yagi in its favored directions.

 Subject: [Elecraft] Evaluating antennas

Given all the discussion about the various antennas

I do wire antenna seminars at conventions and hamfests, and
usually in some way tell my audience the following:

NO antenna is ever high enough! (:-)

Many years ago ... 50+ ... I put up (too) many antennas in
the quest for the perfect radiator, and I offer the following
 observation.

No antenna should be written off without a long period of
evaluation ... perhaps several weeks or more. At the time I
was in hot pursuit of something better and would change
an antenna too often ... even from one day to the next.

I eventually learned that there are many factors that can influence
how well antenna will work for you. I didn't understand about
the fickle ways of the propogation gods, sunspots, the antenna's
surroundings, etc. and that these factors will deternine how your
new antenna will work to a greater degree than what kind of
 antenna it is.

I have four 100' towers and some of today's best antennas
fed with hardline, but if I had to choose only one it would be
 the 80M half-wave at 65' that's fed with home-made open wire
 and a Johnson Matchbox.
