I thought it was a typo and should be

And by the way, its the generals like my self that are relegated to the high

Re: [Elecraft] Setting the DSP filters for SSB

2016-04-27 Thread mikerodgerske5gbc--- via Elecraft
You should be using hi/lo cut.
You can leave lo pretty much alone at 200 or 0.20. Adjust hi cut to your
preference or qrm. If you have narrow filters, they will engage at the set
points.

Sometimes it's best to use ATT before rf gain.

On low bands with static crashes its sometimes helpfull to raise lo cut.

One thing on my K3 that's made me wonder if I'm doing it right is how to adjust
the various filters and settings to accomplish two things.

1. During contests, how to best adjust to hear the station and not the guy
2.5KHz away

2. When trying to hear the weak DX, not be blasted by that guy from Florida or
Texas running a kilowatt.

I work SSB only at this point and haven't found any videos that show how to
best adjust things.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 intermittent receive issue

I had something similar a month ago. When I would touch a switch or front mic
plug, the receive would come back.
I'm not sure it would completely disappear but definitely attenuated.

Turned out to be a PL-259 that was snug but apparently not tight enough.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 in WPX SSB with 2.7 roofer

2014-03-31 Thread mikerodgerske5gbc
Just a thought,

On SSB, you guys should try using LO & HI cut instead of shift and width. You
won't look back and it will probally sound better.

You can probably leave lo cut pretty much alone and vary hi cut. Roofing
filters will come in automatically.

Try it.

Re: [Elecraft] Low audio K3?

2014-03-11 Thread mikerodgerske5gbc
John,

You may have another issue but I thought I'd post what I'm doing.

First I did have a low RX audio issue. When I touched some buttons RX audio
would come up. That turned out to be a PL-259 not tight enough at least so far.

Second, if I use a heavy dose of NR, the volume sucks similar to what you
describe. What worked for me was to move Phones to external speaker.
You may need to provide an external volume control for headphones but maybe not
if you use phones only and not PHONES + SPK. My gaming headset has a inline
volume control.

I have a splitter on the EXT SPK and use PHONES + SPK.

DISCLAIMER: care must be exercised when doing anything related to the audio amp
circuit (EXT SPK). I always power off when plugging/unplugging.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 DSP BYPASS

2014-03-04 Thread mikerodgerske5gbc
I don't think it's possible. Some dsp functions are not available with AGC off.
Sometimes it's quieter with AGC off and reduced rf gain but not always.

After 3 years, the best way to reduce hiss for me is to reduce hi cut (on ssb)
sometimes to 2.4,sometimes 2.1.
I would think in a contest you would be running narrow anyway but wouldn't want
AGC off.

"

Can the DSP in the K3 be bypassed? In other words, can it be operated as a
conventional superheterodyne receiver without any processing? Would be
interesting to do A/B comparison testing. Years ago I had a Ten Tec Omni 6
Plus, a great radio except for the horrid DSP hiss. I always wished I could
somehow bypass or defeat the DSP just to see how much better it would be to
listen to through a long contest without that awful hiss."

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft_K3] [K3] RX Audio/AGC [solved sorta]

2014-01-28 Thread mikerodgerske5gbc
Looks like this was because volume turned up too high.
I have tended at times to run RF GAIN backed off quite a bit thus requiring a
hefty amount of volume of about 2 o'clock. I would then adjust RF Gain to the
level of volume I wanted.

It looks like some stations were strong enough to overcome RF Gain enough to
distort with that amount of volume.
So I'll have to alter my style in group QSO's with noise.

Thanks Everyone.

I don't know if it will help in your situation, but take a look at my
webpage www.w3fpr.com article on "Noisy K3" for some guidance to setting
the AGC parameters. Yes, changing the slope may be helpful, but you will
 have to experiment a bit.

Turning the preamp off and perhaps the attenuator on may help as well.
Then too, if you are running with noise reduction turned on, that could
create some 'funny situations' that are similar to what you are hearing -
 try with NR turned off.

Let me add, I don't mind reducing rf gain more one on one BUT its aggravating
after a while in a group to turn it up and down for one or two guys with high
pitch voices.

Seems AGC should do that?

Once again, it's like the high pitch voice is activating th AF limiter or a
similar sound. AGC fast or slow. AF limiter 30.
Signal around s7.
I run into this frequently on a 20m rag chew net.

I have a ongoing nuisance. On USB it seems high voices will pop/crack just
like if AGC was off and hitting the AF limiter. Reducing RF Gain clears it up.
Turning agc threshold down has no effect.

Is there a agc setting that might correct this? I haven't tried slope which is

[Elecraft] Oops- operator error

2013-10-08 Thread mikerodgerske5gbc
I was checking into the Elecraft SSB net Sunday. Phil just didn't sound right,
like a external speaker plug wasn't making good connection and why I prefer RCA
plugs but anyway I was twisting the many plugs I have to no avail.

Today I was playing with high cut and noticed something weird with hi cut above
2k or so.

Turns out I had somehow left the NB on dsp side at a high setting as to distort
the audio. Turned that off and joy again. I usually run NB on I F and not dsp.
I've been away from the radio awhile. Discovered RX EQ not what I remembered
also. Oh well.

I did enjoy two hams talking about Colorado while I was fiddling.

Not to pick on anyone but do I remember wrong?

I've never seen Elecraft recommend running a K3/10 at 12w or a K3/100 at 120.

Maybe I missed it?

I don't this caused the problem but I see this 12/120 pretty frequently.

I'm looking for troubleshooting ideas.

My K3-10 suddenly died while in use. Here's what happened:

I was listening and transmitting on 15 meters. Heard a station in Kansas 5-9
calling into the California QSO Party. I couldn't reach him despite a strong
signal from him. SWR 1.1:0 outputting 12 watts.

Beginning to think I was having some kind of problem, I decided to power off
the K3 and turn it back on to reset it. When I hit the power switch, the rig
shut off with a fairly loud "pop" from the speakers.

Then it wouldn't turn back on at all.

Power supply is fine; 13.98 volts from 50 amp Astron linear supply. Power cable
is fine; full voltage at rig end of power cord.

Disconnected all peripherals (speakers, straight key, transverter control cable
and RF coax cables to xv432, and mic (Kenwood MC-90 into front panel). Still no
joy.

Any suggestions, other than packing it to send to the Mother Ship?

[Elecraft] OT: HF Streaming iPhone, anyone know?

2013-09-19 Thread mikerodgerske5gbc
Does anyone know of websites, or apps to get streaming audio while traveling
that would be easy to access.

Either with frequency input or fixed?

I've found the fixed one in Dallas and their are two handiham options on echo
link.

Anyone know of others?

I get a lot of windshield time at night.

I think Isdr requires a seperate receiver device which might be a option.

I know about SDR.org but looking for a better alternative from a phone.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 using Clear Speech Speaker

2013-09-04 Thread mikerodgerske5gbc
K3 NR-- it has been mentioned some time ago that 1 thru 4 were best for cw and
5 thru 8 were best for ssb, I don't know the truth to this but I do know that
on 6-20m ssb that 7-2 or 3 or 8-2 or 3 works very well but it can reduce
speaker volume and especially headphone volume which I've resolved.

I've also noticed that with rf gain at 2 o'clock, turning agc off reduces
noise. I'd be interested as to why this is so.

My interest is in digging weak signals out. I only go to 40 & 80 if I can't
find anything on 6-20 or 60.

I've also got a gap hear it speaker I tried but rarely find it advantageous
anymore for weak signal.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] using clear speech speaker.

2013-08-30 Thread mikerodgerske5gbc
I've got a gap made by bmi. When I first put it in I thought it was some
advantage but rarely think so anymore.
I can switch it in and out.

When I want NR I run the k3 dsp pretty hard on ssb at 7 or 8-2 or 3. This
reduces volume drastically so I have phones on the external speaker side but
requires a phone volume control if using both speakers and phones.
The k3 could use more volume.

I wouldn't pay $100 for one of those speakers. I stole mine for $5.

Re: [Elecraft] K3- audio balance and hiss

2013-07-22 Thread mikerodgerske5gbc
Since it was suggested that this hiss is band noise, I tried it with no coax
connected to the K3. Same result.

This may indeed have something to do with a flat response as suggested. I've
often wondered if other manufacturers roll this high end off. I think it's
somewhere around 3500hz. At least my external eq slider for 3500 takes it out.
I suppose this may be natural and I've been spoiled to not hearing it before
getting the K3. No plans to sell it.
I just deal with it.

I have played around with what benefit is this high end anyway and have thus
far discovered it helps with female voices and with Austrailia and New Zealand.
I've found for them that high cut of 2700 brings out more clarity. That's a
width of 2.5. A little bit of hiss there but not too bad.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 RX AUDIO

2013-07-21 Thread mikerodgerske5gbc
I think the audio voice quality has been remedied long ago.
What lingers is the high end hiss that I and a few others hear. Apparently this
only bothers a minority.
On my 5047 it occurs with hi cut of about 2500 and gets worse to 3000. If you
run bandwidth 2.1 or below you will never hear it. 2.4 probably hear it some.
It's most prevalent scanning a vacant band 6-20. Not as noticeable when people
are talking.
On the noisier bands I'm not sure you hear it at all. I was on 40 the other
night using NR and didn't hear it.

This issue in general comes up frequently on other groups and is negative
press. It's usually called something like fatigue factor like during a contest.
I think some of this is holdover and bad press before the dsp upgrade several
years ago. I don't see anything wrong with the audio itself, just the high end
hiss. My top 3 eq bands at -16 by the way.
Something that comes up also is how well the k handles lightning noise spikes
in agc and why can't others do it? That's positive press.
