[Elecraft] KPA 1000 1500

2014-12-13 Thread r miles

If you're a serious contester maybe you want the extra DBs. But for
DXers, with any skill you can wrk. what's out there with the K line.
If a bigger amp cabinet was needed. A much larger heavier one they
probably wouldn't be going on DXpeditions as they are now. Most recent
DXpeditions are exclusively K3s and/or KPAs. I have an average DXer stn.
I've not yet missed anything. I know the rare call locations help
them but I've not been where I couldn't copy the DX.
I've had my K line nearly 3 yr.s and I personally wouldn't go back to a
tube amp. Can't tell you how much rare DX I've seen spotted been
there in 15 seconds wrkd it. I wouldn't want to sit there waiting a
minute or two til the warm up light goes out on a tube amp. Be 20 or 30
more calling by then. Probably K line guys

Just my opinion. K9IL

[Elecraft] Last of the leftiness...

2014-12-02 Thread r miles

I know you 'righties' are just kidding. I'm not offended. But see it
from our side. The only class in school I ever failed was in the
Chicago PS system. I failed penmanship. Yes, it was a course in the
1950s public schools. I failed because I couldn't write with the proper
'slant'. The teacher refused to accept the fact I was lefthanded it
was impossible for me to write that way. Poor way to treat a 9 yr. old.
Still a painfull memory.
One reason [ down the list a bit] I chose the K3 was it is an easier
radio to operate being a leftie. I tuned several other brands the K3
was best.

So I guess I got it right ! Hi! Hi!

[Elecraft] Learning CW

2014-12-01 Thread r miles

Just my opinion guys... Most radios have an electronic keyer built
in . My K3 does I use it. So it's straight key [ UGH] or electronic
key. If you want to send the letter A. It's DIT DAH. With a keyer it's
tap one side then the other. The keyer sends DIT with the proper spacing
then DAH. With a straight key anyone sending especially if they're
just learning will send five As every one will have different spacing
DAHs of a different time length. Why not just start with electronic
keying. You can even use the keyboard to send. Receiving or copying code
is the real job.
I've been on CW 55 yr.s. I can still 'head copy' 45 WPM but so what. A
person making a contact with another CW stn. at 10 WPM is having just
as much pleasure as a contact at 40 WPM. I speak a little Spanish. Very
little. But I speak another language. CW. From the time I was 13 yr.s
old I've felt I speak a language other than English. Sense of pride in
that.
If you want to use machines to work CW that's how you see it. Like JT65
or RTTY. Machines doing the work. Nothing wrong with that. If you want
to actually send CW why waste yr.s on an old way of sending when the
modern way is easier easier on the ears of those copying your CW.
In my opinion if you really want to learn to send get an electronic key
use the keyer built into your radio. You can practice off air. If you
want to later try nostaligic straight keys at least you will know what
letters should sound like on CW. You can match your straight key sending
to what you know the CW should sound like. My opinion.

[Elecraft] Left handed CW

2014-12-01 Thread r miles

I am left handed but I send with the electronic key set for a
righthander. I learned this way for several reasons but the primary
reason 50 yr.s ago was I could sit at 90% of other stn.s and operate.
Primarly FD contest operations. All lefties are semi-ambidextrous out
of necessity.

[Elecraft] HF noise.....30m

2014-10-12 Thread r miles

Often on 30m. Starting arnd. 10115 anywhere from 20 kc wide to out of
the top of the band. A fast pulse. Only happens after dark in NA. I
believe it's OTH radar. Of course no one has ever said it was theirs. My
K3 doesn't block it as some nights it's 20 db over S9.

Once in a while on 10120 there's an extremely strong CW signal sending
only a series of 5 letter or number groups. On less than an hr. then
gone. No I D. Seems to come from Cuba.

The RTTY on 10100 is a 10kw German stn. sending WX info to ships at sea.
Makes a gud prop beacon.

Unfortunately, the illegal SSB stn.s are discovering 30m. For such a
tiny ham band we seem to attract a lot of strange signals.

[Elecraft] K3 B knob

2014-08-22 Thread r miles

All of the knobs on the K3 and KX3 are under warranty for the life of
the radio

(assuming we are still here ;-)

I have one on the way. Fantastic service! In nearly 4 yr.s with my K3 I
had one tech. problem with it. When I called Elecraft the tech I talked
to only did K3s answered every question. With his help on the phone
the problem was resolved in 10 minutes. This is why I then bought a
KPA500 and a KAT500. I've not been sorry. I wish every company was
Elecraft. I'll be a lifetime customer.

My K3 is over 3 yr.s old. I read the posts got the flashlight out. I
can see feel a crack across the front of the knob. About 1/4'' left of
the set screw. Still seems OK. Anyone else see cracks or feel them on
knob B. The 1st yr. I had two of the inner knobs on the AF RF controls
break. Elecraft replaced them very quickly.

[Elecraft] 6m......just my thoughts

2014-02-26 Thread r miles

Being an HF DXer I'm down to one. 6 yr.s ago I'd tried 6m. A friend said
load my TA 33 since I had no 6m antenna. Well I wrkd 25 countries with
100w an HF tribander.Then I put up a 3 ele 6m wrkd abt 60 countries.
I've since put up a 5 ele 6m yagi with a larger one gg up this Spring.
One of the reasons I got a KPA500 was 6m. I'm at 90 countries now from
TN.

The band is open from late March thru August with quick openings
anytime. Last week there were openings to KH6 SA from Ca to Wa. The
Gulf Coast guys are hearing SA most evenings now. The last two Winters
we've had openings[ only 20-30 min.s] to the S Pacific. Mostly CW but
sometimes SSB too.

Build a little 3 ele 6m yagi. It'll only be a 6' boom. Smaller than TV
antennas. 6m is like 10m. When it's open antennas don't matter that
much.

I've wrkd Japan 100s of times on HF but it was a rush to wrk Japan on
6m

In the QRN times of Summer 6m offers a gud break from HF.

In 6 months useage of mine in a K line no problems. K3/KPA500/KAT500.
The only cycling it's done after set up has been OP error. Wrong antenna

it's done on the remembered antenna was OP error too. I'd jump from
band end to end forget to tap a few dits to engage it's memory. Op
error.
Individual ant. s 160m thru 6m no problems. Last software update apx 6

[Elecraft] CW keys

2013-01-05 Thread r miles

Several wks ago I had a problem keying my K3. All of a sudden the
outboard keyers [ MFJ Logikit ] sounded normal in the monitor but what
was coming out of the K3 was like using two bare wires to send with. I
talked to the Tech @ Elecraft. He thought it was an acustic loop. AF.
Maybe one of the wire glum of wires behind the OP desk was moved by me
or the cat. He said I was the 2nd case he'd hrd of. He suggested I go to
the internal keyer. I did problem solved. I won't go into why I used
external keyers but I'm getting used to the K3s keyer now. It's great to
call talk to someone who knows the K3 inside out. Tnx Elecraft.

As to a key. For the guy looking for a key. I think the best advise is
to try out several keys.If you have ham friends who operate CW go visit
try their key. Some ham stores in big cities often have keys you can
try out on site. Don't go by anothers idea of the best key. Some of the
keys suggested in posts I tried didn't like or just plain hated. I use
a Vibrokey. I have for 50 yr.s. However that's me. Everyone needs to
find a key they like. Unlike SSB guys who change mics or settings as
the situation calls for keys are very personal. I'd never go to Field
Day without MY key. I only feel totally comfortable with my key. Lots of
CW Ops feel the same I'm sure. I want to send the best CW I can that's
very personal. For a CW guy listening to some of the stuff that passes
as CW on the air these days is painful. To me nothing is more pleasing
to the ear than really great CW. Just my opinion..

Tnx for the suggestions guys. It was a cable problem. So obvious I
should have seen it right off. Forest for the trees. I use a Y cable to
feed the KPA500 the PR6.After plugging unplugging I just realized
the other side of the Y cable had nothing plugged in. I pulled the black
cable coming from the KPA500 it was just dangling off the OP desk.
Plugged it into the Y cable everything back. Yahoo! I did realize I
had just plugged the KPA500 cable into the Y cable and FORGOT to tighten
the screws. My error for sure. Tnx agn guys. If this happens again I'll
go to the cables right away.

[Elecraft] Help,advise K3/KPA500 problem

2012-12-10 Thread r miles

They have been humming along for a yr. I'm not computer savy so with
help from my friend Jamie I was up and going. Three days ago my
outboard keyer died. I pulled the K3 forward on the desk to plug in my
spare keyer. [I prefer an outboard keyer]. When all was connected the
radio pushed back in position the K3 KPA500 are not talking. I get no
message on the K3 display the KPA is on. The amp is just bypassing RF.
The KPA displays the K3 output power but when I key the amp sits in
standby. The band following is not working. They just are not
communicating. Jamie suggested unplugging all the interconnect cables
reinserting them in the K3 KPA. Maybe a lost connection.
That had no effect. I'm open to suggestions as a starting point or if
anyone else has experienced this how they resolved the problem. I want
to get the KPA going as I have a new KAT500 in a box on the shack floor.

[Elecraft] Swains Is

2012-09-10 Thread r miles

This morning I wrkd them on 40m SSB from Tn with my trusty K3/KPA500
Hytower vertical. He was strong [S9] here. After he got the K9 he asked
several times for my suffix before getting it. After the QSO I flipped
to my xmit freq. There were 3 or 4 tailgaiters calling him on my old
xmit freq. He picked up a K3. When he asked for his suffix I flipped
back to the old xmit. As the K3 was giving his call at least 5 or 6
idiots were calling him. They wouldn't quit. Finally the NH8 OP said
:stop I'm only calling the K3. When I flipped there were still two
idiots calling him. The NH8 OP then said: I'll only answer the K3. Then
the K3 got his QSO.
Who knows who had the poor rx who were the idiots. I think you can
guess. Besides bad manners it slows the QSO count down. Bottom line is
that this idea of I'll yell my call til he's forced to answer me is
counterproductive. They embarrass themselves. It slows the QSO count
down. It means a few stn.s will never get the QSO. The hobby loses.
Maybe that's what they want. Who knows. The axium of work the obnoxious
ones first get them out of the way has it's points but this is a
hobby. Or it is sometimes

[Elecraft] KAT500...e mail today

2012-08-30 Thread r miles

Last week, thanks to some very diligent field testing, we discovered a
way to significantly reduce LC network losses on the highest bands
(especially on 6 meters).

We just redesigned the PC board to take advantage of this, so you'll be
getting a better ATU. This will push the production schedule out
farther, and we had to scrap a lot of material, but the change will be
worth the trouble.

We'll post a revised shipping date as soon as Eric recovers from his
latest hamfest adventure.

73,
Wayne
N6KR

Tnx Wayne,

This is why I'm glad I own a K3 a KPA500. I'll be waiting. My opinion
if this was an offshore manufacturer this would be fixed in the second
or third generation. Maybe. I've been happier with my Elecraft than
any other brand I've owned. I've owned every JA brand I'll not go
back. Keep up the great work.

You'd love a K3 on 6m. I've not gotten the pre amp yet but I hear well
with a modest short boom 5 el yagi. What I really love is the KPA500.
Man that 500w on 6m is the difference. Not to the century mark yet just
89/88 but if 6m ever picks up this summer I hope to get closer. Been
DXing for 50 yr.s as a CW OP it's the best RX I have used I've used
every brand you could name and then some.

[Elecraft] Manuals

2012-06-11 Thread r miles

I still want a printed manual. I don't live with a PC screen in my face.
I do sit read. A printed manual is a lot lighter than a laptop
cooler too. I can read an index find the page quicker than I can
scroll. Just MHO.

[Elecraft] KAT 500

2012-05-20 Thread r miles

I placed my order. I hope to be in the 1st run. I have a question or two
for the guys who saw it at Dayton.
How is it cabled. Not the antenna connections. K3 to it or thru the
KPA500? Will there be a special cable like the one for the K3 to
KPA500? Is elecraft offering a wart xfmr for the KAT500? Any minor
details yet to be spoken about?

[Elecraft] Which rig

2012-04-04 Thread r miles

We were just there. I use a K3/KPA500. My XYL who is mostly a contest
OP on SSB needed an updated radio for her desk. We didn't want to spend
the cost of a 2nd K3 as she only operates a few DX contests FD. We
would have prefered American made but the TT Eagle was the only other
option. We compared it to a Kenwood TS 590s. By the time you get one or
two roofing filters the cost of the Eagle approached the K3. The TT
filters were 4 pole vs the 8 pole in the K3. The Kenwood had all the
filters built in along with a few bells whistles the TT didn't. The
cost was $400 less for the Kenwood. But what really killed the TT Eagle
was two things most above entry level radios have the TT doesn't. It
has only one SO 239 antenna port. So you screw unscrew or use an
external antenna switch. Really unhandy if you have HF/VHF antennas as
we do. It also has no RX ant input. Needless to say I got her the TS
590s. The most radio for the money. It's a fine radio but it's NO
K3...

You need to try SOMETHING if you want to get on the air. Worst case is
it will not work. Then you go from there.

[Elecraft] Tuning an 811h

2012-01-20 Thread r miles

I simply put a momentary switch in a mini box wired across the key line.
Hold it down as long as you need. The max key down time at max power on
the 811h is 7 seconds per the manual. Was LOL at the send dits at 35
WPM. Try dipping the 811h to resonance while bringing up the drive with
one hand in 7 seconds. The 811h doesn't peak resonance at low drive
then just turn the exciter drive up. It must be 'tweeked' at full drive
as per the manual. Lots of work with just one hand in 7 seconds. LOL.
That's why my 811h is on the XYLs desk where she mostly contests single
band SSB I use a KPA500.

With the auto set on the KPA500 I still tap it for an instant to
see the LEDs light correctly. Just in case I am on the wrong antenna or
some other problem.

Parts are under $10 it makes using an 811h a lot easier

[Elecraft] KPA DXing

2012-01-18 Thread r miles

Yes antennas are important but also skill helps. You can buy mighty
antenna systems multi KW amps but if you can't master simple DXing
technique you won't work anything. I've never ran more than 700w. {My
old SB 220] I've always used my TA 33 tribander @50' a few homemade 2
element WARC yagis all under 50' high low wires and verticals. But
I've done OK I guess. 360 countries confirmed 9x DXCC. From middle
America. To me a DB or three won't help if you don't have a good
antenna, skills and propagation. I wonder if some of the crop of
Dxpedition jammers that appear are from this group. They run big
antennas high power but can't work the DX so they get mad try to
stop everyone working them. No skill, they need instant gradification.
I'm happy with my KPA500. I would like the KAT500 but I don't ever plan
to go higher power. The KPA500 is one of the very few to cover 6m. By
the way I have 83 countries confirmed on 6m from Tn. Oh well, one day
I'll have a REAL DX station. NOT. K9IL

[Elecraft] Operator error?

2011-12-28 Thread r miles

Since I got the KPA this has happened three times. I get so used to
being almost instant go I may be too fast.
K3 on I see a DX spot. I hit the on switch on the KPA. I push the K3
RIT on in case I want to use it. With in 2 or 3 seconds I hit the
operate button on the KPA send a Dit. KPA red lights. I punch the KPA
to standby take a breath. I go to operate on the KPA all is normal.
If I don't punch on RIT this hasn't occured. Am I just too fast the K3
is getting too many commands at once. There's no damage just a wake up
call to the operator. All this happens in just 3 or 4 seconds.
Operator error?

[Elecraft] KPA pop redux

2011-12-11 Thread r miles

After all the posts my comment I've been paying closer attention. I'm
not getting 'loud' pops just occasional clicks as things heat or cool.
What got my attention I think was sometimes a few minutes after shutoff
I near a click. I think that's just the amp metal coming back to room
temp.
I've had 4 amps. SB200/220 AL 811h and the KPA. This thing is so far
ahead of those it's remarkable. I sit waiting to pounce on a KAT500 when
it arrives.

I get an occasional mild pop but not the loud pops as others report.

Is the software all finished? I am interested on how it will tune. Will
the K3 provide carrier alone or with the KPA 500. Guessing it will
match the load in low power. I'll miss the SWR graph dancing!

I've read the size is as the K3/KPA only half as tall. Is that correct?

Is there a ball park figure on cost? I am ready to get one..yesterday.

I don't print RTTY so I'm not seeing the sending. Several years ago

Had mine 2 months love it. Curious abt. one thing. Programed the

stored in a battery back- uped internal memory? I found no mention of
an internal battery or access to one in my manual. Not a big deal but

[Elecraft] K3 KPA500 3 days in.

2011-06-21 Thread r miles

My K3 is 2.5 yr.s old. I never bothered with updates as I was happy with
the radio as is. When my friend WB4YDL helped me get the amp going we
had to run the latest updates. There is a new one that must be run to be
able to use the amp. I am using the Elecraft interconnect cable.
.
I discovered that after we had the KPA500 up running my ATU TUNE ANT
[ant 1 or 2] functions were off in the K3. I had to go into the MENU
turn on those functions. They are back working OK. I don't know if
this is just something that happened because I had never updated the
K3 or if that happens to all connecting the KPA500. It did not affect
the RX ANT function.
...
One curious note. My SWR on the 6m antenna is apx 1.4:1. Good enough for
the amp. I tapped ATU TUNE with the amp off the K3 easily went to it's
normal 1:1 SWR. When I keyed the amp the SWR LEDs are showing apx
1.2/1.3:1 SWR. The K3 reads 1:1 SWR either way.I don't know if it
actually is that or what. During xmit with the amp it shows better SWR
consistantly. Haven't tried the HF antennas yet.

[Elecraft] KPA500 vs others

2011-06-21 Thread r miles

Others can argue the tech. advantages pro or con. Some feel they need
2 KW. I don't.. For a DXer antennas skill are more important than a
few more watts. I like the way it works with my K3. I've had less
than stellar dealings with the Asian companies. Whether it's bias on my
part or not I like the idea that it's made serviced in my home
country.

On a more human note. I grew up as a new ham in 1959 at 13 yr.s old. I
had the thrill of at least once having used the dream lines of the
time. The Collins Drake lines. I wasn't in the position to own one.
I am now I see the K line as the dream line. I now have a dream
line. There ain't no way on Gods Green Earth I'm not going to live my
dream. Soap Box over.

Only my 2nd day using it. Operation manual on page 8, item 4 under

power you want one to drive the amp at the proper level. Assuming the
radio is a K3. Which it is in my case. OK how is this done? I can't find
any mention of this in the manual. Is it done in the K3 menu? Or am I

[Elecraft] KAT 500

2011-04-23 Thread r miles

Ok guysI'm on the July list for the KPA500. Any information on the
KAT500. I've hrd the rumors but is there a true description of it
anywhere? I'm of modest means so I planned for two yr.s for the KPA500.
Maybe be saving the butter egg money again.
I'm guessing it will remember it's setting when it returns to a previous

[Elecraft] KPAK3AUX

2011-04-14 Thread r miles

For all the hoopla about the new signal generator Elecraft put the
inter-connect cable for the K3 to KPA500 on sale yesterday.As a buyer
of the KPA500 [on the July delivery list] I received an e mail from
Vicki @ Elecraft. I assume the other buyers did also. If you were
waiting to order the 500 til the cable was available wait no more.
I'll be curious to see my serial nr. when the 500 arrives. Since all
were gone in less than a week I wonder how many were made in the first
run.
..
I've been licensed 52 yr.s. As a kid I actually operated an S line. I
dreamed of owning one. As a young man I wanted a C line but with young
kids, etc it wasn't possible. Now it looks like in a few months I'll be
the proud owner of a K line. You think this hobby can't give you a
thrill after 50 yr.s on the air?

The 7 towers in the yard were no problem so the KPA500 isn't a big thing

[Elecraft] KPA500 Questions

2011-04-07 Thread r miles

Is the inter connect cable between the K3 KPA500 not available yet? I
read the online manual but not clear on SWR. If say the SWR is 1.5 to 1
does the display show forward power in watts or a combination of forward
reflected? If the SWR is less than ideal will the 500 back the power
down to ease the heat build up? Maybe I'm just missing it. I'll re-read
the manual again

[Elecraft] Leftie keying

2011-03-26 Thread r miles

As a kid leftie in the late 50s when I went to a bug then electronic
keyer I learned to send left handed with the keyer set for a rightie.
I found it easy. My keyer has always been set so a rightie could just
sit and start sending normally. After he moved the keyer to the right
side of the OP desk. This has served me well guest operating or on FD.
NO changing just slide the keyer to the proper side of the OP position.
As a leftie in a rightie world we learn early to function with things
not set for us. We adapt. Only time I was ever angry at righties was
grade school in Chicago in the 50's. Dumb teacher gave me my only
failing grade because I couldn't slant my writing the CORRECT way! I
forgave but NEVER forgot.

[Elecraft] Shipping a K3

2011-02-27 Thread r miles

With no origional packing I would wrap with 4'' of bubble wrap all the
way around not just loops. I'd put that in a box with 6'' or more of
peanuts around ALL sides. Pack the peanuts so when you shake the box
there is no hint of movement. They should be packed so you have to put
pressure on the lid to tape it shut. Do your address label in large
print. Wrap the ENTIRE package with 2'' wide clear tape. All the way
around.
I'd put an address label like you put on letters on the radio back
whatever other parts you send. I'd use an index card with both
addresses on the radio under the bubble wrap one in the peanuts.
This may cost an extra $10 for tape, peanuts and bubble wrap. If you
send it USPS get a delivery confirmation a return receipt. This is an
expensive item don't skimp!
I spent 32 yr.s in the postal service with my last 6 yr.s as a window
clerk. I know what I speak of. I could tell a lot of horror stories so
don't skimp! Please!

PS:When it returns SAVE ALL the packing! Elecraft knows how to ship!

[Elecraft] DX spotting networks

2011-02-13 Thread r miles

If you have the internet in the shack ck. out DXSCAPE. You can choose
between US,Worldwide or JA spots. Sometimes if say S9DX has no US spots
in a while click on the WW and/or JA screens. If they are active someone
in the world will spot them. If propagation is coming soon to your area
on the band you want you'll be able to see if they are on that band
working some other part of the world. It'll at least give you a heads up.
I said this a few days ago but it's repeatable. You're gg to see more
more of these Dxpeditions using Elecraft. I wouldn't trade my K3 for
any of those heavy jobs. I told my XYL [a ham] we could get 3 of the K3s
for the price of one of those top of the line JA rigs! Only
dreaming..

[Elecraft] Dxpeditions

2011-02-12 Thread r miles

Here it's a K3, 500w and no antenna in my little antenna farm over 50'.
Got the S9 on 6 bands. The TJ9 on 4 bands.
The most important thing beyond a good antenna is timing. If the stn
you are chasing is wrking very few in your area you probably don't have
the propagation.
If you know DXers around you ask them. They may have wrkd them at the
peak times. Nothing wrong in asking. DX IS

[Elecraft] K3s @ VP8

2011-02-01 Thread r miles

Band condx aren't the best. But if you've wrkd them they weren't
very strong thank those K3s. Every evening there's a 6 kc wide CW pile
up of callers on 160m,80m 40m. Most of the world calling them. I've
managed a few Qs. On 15m SSB they were 53 but they hrd me. One K3 to
another Hi!
When the KPA500 comes on line expect to see them K3s as the norm on
Dxpeditions.
If you've not gotten thru hang in there. The pile ups will ease
hopefully conditions will improve.

[Elecraft] My opinion ..KPA 500

2011-01-26 Thread r miles

Everyone feels differently about QRO. What limit or no limit is
enough. As a hardcore DXer I was taught as a pup antenna was everything.
Skill then power in that order. I've done very well never running
over 6-700w. I concentrated on antenna improving my skill. My new
challenge is 6m. I've seen no mention of 6m in these comments. There
are no 6m amps in this price range.
...
Once the KPA 500 is on the market if you ever dreamed of going on a
Dxpedition you'll be able to fulfill your fantasy. A K3 switcher PS
with a KPA500 and a spool of wire in a suitcase. Weighing under 60
lb.s.
..
If you ever had a REAL emergency had to go temporary location/antenna
that wouldn't be a bad combination either.

I guess the answer will be known in a year if it's a hit. I personally
plan on buying one if I can. If it's as great as my K3 how can I lose?

[Elecraft] KPA 500

2010-09-09 Thread r miles
I guess because I'm a DXer more than contester [ a lot more] I don't see the
need for a coax melting amp. I see 5-600 W as just about right. There are amps
on the market that brag they give you an easy KW. What they're really saying is
this baby will go 2+ with a bit of a push. That's DC out. Why are baluns
coax advertised as good to 5 KW PEP. WINK WINK
I was always under the impression antenna was the most important thing. If
you have a good tuned antenna why do you need massive tuners. I rarely venture
onto SSB so maybe I'd use a tuner because ALL my antennas are tuned for CW.All
are under 1:1.3 SWR. I just tap the tune button on the K3 so the little graph
doesn't wiggle as I send. You can pump massive watts into a wet string. You'll
make contacts but ... I currently use an Ameritron AL 811H. Don't use a
tuner.
I like the idea of an amp in sync with my K3. As an Elecraft owner I guess I'm
biased.
As someone chasing 10 band DXCC I see the addition of 6m as a great selling
point. I've done the first 9 three quarters of the way on 6m. The KPA 500 is
right in my wheelhouse. I see this new amp as a sole mate to my K3. Why did
guys get the L4B to mate with their Drakes or the Collins amp to go with their
S Lines? It just feels right that's why.
These thoughts are not based on price or some data sheet. I just buy what
feels right. As to the Yuppie comment. I worked in an office downtown for 32
yr.s before I retired. It was the Post Office. I was blue collar. Blue shirt,
blue pants blue tie too. My hat was blue too.

Re: [Elecraft] Lightening

2010-08-13 Thread r miles
Interesting reading the last few days.
This morning when we couldn't raise my mother in law on the phone we went to
check on her. She lives about 10 miles away. We had some thunder yesterday PM
but no rain. Been over three weeks of no rain 100+ F temps.
She is OK but the AC pole 150' from her home must have taken a lightening
hit. Induced current I assume. The breaker on the pole pig' wasn't thrown.
She lost a garage door opener, a TV, telephone answering machine we know of.
She is in a rural area has dial up internet. When I get the phone back up
I'll see if her PC modem is OK.
If you missed it last night on Nat Geo channel was an hour long program on
lightening. Maybe it will be repeated.
You can't be over protective.

Re: [Elecraft] Big box K3

2010-08-09 Thread r miles
Being a six footer able a palm a basketball in my youth I don't find the K3
too crowded. I don't have small hands to say the least. I seem to be able to
use the radio just fine. At least in the 18 months I've owned one.
Our radio club is small. At Field Day we've used two K3s a K2. No complaints
from the various operators. No big box 50+ lb. radios brought out tho. Too
heavy to lug around I guess.
When I contest I log with a laptop. Being an awful typer I watch what I type.
For me a P3 I' d move for my best view would be better than having to stare
at the transceiver straight on.
If you ever wanted to try DXing from a DX location bet you can't drag a 60 lb.
radio as a carry on. K3, switcher PS acc. under 20 lb.s
Being a lefty only partly ambidexterous my only K3 complaint is the message
pad is set for rightys.
Oh well just a small problem.
In my 51 years of hamming I've sat in front of just about everything made. I'm
keeping my K3...
K9IL

PS: Going to be ruff dragging that little KPA 500 around instead of a big box
80 lb. amplifier.

[Elecraft] 6m

2010-07-05 Thread r miles
I am a 'lifer' DXer. Any band. Mostly CW. After 9 band DXCC 355 worked, 6m is
a new quest. 6m is like 160m. Windows . Grayline on 160m windows of short
duration on 6m. If I want to chat I go on SSB mostly talk to local hams.
Being in NW TN EM 56 during the summer season we get 15-30 min. window a few
days a month to Japan. I managed to work Japan once last yr. 2 weeks ago. On
CW as SSB is too difficult. Weak signal work. No time to chat even if that were
possible with the QSB short window. We've had two good openings to Europe
this summer. They last from 1 to 3 hr.s then gone. You workem' contest style
to give others a chance.6m will open to narrow areas for short durations. It
will open to say Italy for 30 min.s then the propagation shifts to France for a
bit and so on so on. Sometimes it opens to one area only then fades away. 6m
is not HF. Sunday was a great DX day. Today the band was dead all day til
evening then open to W7 VE7 for an hour then POOF! Who knows about tomorrow.
You take what you're given.
160m is the same. You get 30 min.s of grayline DX to somewhere. That's all. No
do overs. You wait til tomorrows grayline to try again.
Today on 6m I had a good 10 min. CW QSO with Steve VE7SL. It was about DX our
K3s 6m 160m antennas. It doesn't happen often but it does happen.
I have been very pleased with my K3 on 6m. I use a homemade 5 el yagi @ 55'. In
yesterdays 6m Es I worked country #70 71. My K3 is doing it's job. I have no
complaints about the receiver quality on 6m. I'm not using the additional
pre-amp.
6m is not HF. Guys who don't DX, chase grid squares as you would chase counties
or states on HF. Even those who aren't DXers or contesters will probably be
able to tell you what states they've worked on what band. Even tell you they've
worked a few DXs too.
Each band has it's points. You can't make the band fit you. You use the band as
it is.
Just my thoughts

[Elecraft] 6m CW freq

2010-07-05 Thread r miles
In the last 2 big DX openings to Europe I found the Italians like 50070 to
50085 along with the more Eastern Europeans. A lot of Western Eu will use CW
between 50115 50100. Sometimes you do fight the beacons between 50070
50080. That's what the 8 pole 200hz filter is for in the K3. Often DX will
switch between SSB CW when in the DX window 50100-50125.
Might be all the RFI we hear about in Europe.
Some of the BIG GUN US DXers often call CQ DX between 50060 50070.
For what it's worth

In the 1960s Henry others marketed amps for other than amateur use. They
were called ' export models'. For military, government civilian other uses.
Most would easily reach amateur limits for domestic use. The 'export models'
usually had a heavier plate transformer. Some times a larger cooling chimney.
The same amperage but 500v or more higher out. Using the same amp but with
the export model xfmr could result in 500 or a 1000 more watts output.A friend

export model amp. They used it for hamming MARS work. He said if he LIGHTLY
drove this amp it put out 3KW. Another friend bought a used amp with the
'export model' label. He had to really drive it lightly. He set the HyGain
balun on his TH6 on fire! Supposed to be a 5 KW balun. The bigger Alpha had 3
holes cut in the chassis. USA ones were sold with 2 tubes but I've heard guys

160m. It is rotatable fed into an ICE 135b preamp then to the K3 Rx ant
connector. Transmitting ant. is a simple OCF dipole @50'. Not as good as the L
probably. I have had the loop up just this winter. From NW Tn the loop is
better most of the time receiving SA than the dipole. Most other directions
it's equal or worse MOST of the time. But every day is different. During CQ WW
160m PY0F was always better with the dipole. The week before the contest the
loop was two S units better to PY0F.
Last night YV1DIG was also two S units better on the dipole. Some nights the
UAs are a bit better on the loop.
I run the K3 pre amp all the time. Either antenna.I have the 1.8/.400 .250 8
pole filters. I normally run at .200 bandwidth.I only operate CW.
Some mornings I hr. JA well some mornings NADA. It depends on the Flux. When
the A K are low I hear the best.
What I do is as soon as I hr. the DX I punch the loop in to see which is
hearing better. The back ground noise level is obviously lower on the loop so
are the signals.
We are in different parts of the country so we'll have propagation
differently. This is no expert opinion just what I've observed.

[Elecraft] GFI trip

2010-01-20 Thread r miles
My XYL I built this house . We wired it used GFIs where required . Even
where they weren't. Most were Chinese. Two were American. I've had RF trip
both kinds. Just random trips with nothing repeatable time after time. I found
the easiest way to fix the problem was just replace the GFI. I have no idea if
it was component failure or just freak incident .Replacing has almost always
stopped the trips.I only had a pull one unrequired one leave the GFI out.
Trips would occur every few months or so. Chinese. For what it's worthI
operate 160m thru 6m no particular freq was worse than another. My old IC
746 would lock on 40m CW once in a while but that's another RF story

[Elecraft] K3 on the air time

2010-01-10 Thread r miles
Mine is on every morning at grayline evening thru bedtime. I am no tech I
don't have more than a very basic idea how things inside work. I care what it
can do for my DXing.
Currently I'm focused on 160m.Just 500w a dipole @50'. A long way from a big
gun.I consider the K3 an equilizer. Last evening TG9NX was on 160m CW. Very
weak. I listened for an hour called too. No contact tho'. However there were
a lot of 'big gun' stn.s calling him. Some wrkd him some didn't. I bet they
weren't using a K3. I heard him reply to EVERYONE. Some of the big boys were
called back but they couldn't hear him. He would call them two or three times
before they heard him reply. A couple of them never heard him
reply.Alligatorsall XMIT no ears. You can't work em' if you can't hear
them. In my 50 yr.s of hamming it's the best receiver I've ever used.
As to size. It's a tiny bit smaller than my old IC 746. I see no difference
playing with the controls. In my youth I easily 'palmed' a basketball so I
don't have small hands. I'm a lefty but that's a whole another placement issue.
I read the techno stuff on the reflector try to learn. As long as the K3
comes on I can start tuning AND hear DX is all I care about.
Everything in this hobby is subjective. But don't just admire the
radioturn it on. My '65 Mustang is driven not kept in the garage
uncovered once in a while and admired. What's the point.

Re: [Elecraft] boots

2009-12-15 Thread r miles
I'm not a tech by any standards. This is just IMHO. I have been active on 160m
3 winters chasing DXCC. The 1st winter I ran 100w. I managed 5 countries. I
bought an AL 811h just so I had more output on 160m the WARC bands. 17m
12m. My operation is 99.9% CW. I am now at 108 on 160m. Same antenna. An OCF
dipole at 50'. My watt meter shows 500w out. I don't push the amp for another
50-75w. I see no point. I added 103 counters in two winters by gg to 500w. on
160m.
Since I use yagis on 17m 12m I seldom use the amp.
If you want to go from 100w to 150w on 160m go to it. Have fun. If you hear me
on 160m CW calling DX know that the amp is on.
Now if you come up with a 200-300w amp for 6m let me know. That's my next
quest. Getting 47 more on 6m!
Happy Holidays

Re: [Elecraft] knobs

I received mine VERY fast but I'm in the US. As a retired postal clerk I can
tell you lots of stories about shipping thru customs. I retired before 911 but
even in 2000 some countries were fast some slow or stop. Even the smallest
padded bag took a month to clear customs in France. One customer sent cremated
ashes to Mexico. That was over 3 months til delivery. I could speak dozens of
such stories. Hang in there. They'll arrive.

[Elecraft] chasing DX on cw

2009-10-15 Thread r miles
When I'm split I just push A/B. I am then listening to my Xmit Freq. I set the
bandwidth narrow on my listening freq wider on my Xmit freq. When the DX
turns it back to the stn it;s working I punch A/Btune for their signal if
it's not in my receive bandwidth. Some times you find them sometimes you
don't. Mostly I do.Then push A/B again to hear the DX go QRZ

[Elecraft] K3 ergonomics

2009-09-19 Thread r miles
I went thru the same question. Being over 6' tall I could 'palm' a
basketball in my youth I wasn't sure. I used a friends K2 K3 on FD the last 3
yr.s. I realized it was no more difficult or easier to operate than a big rig.
Another friend has a TS 2000 which is 'prettier' maybe..but I wouldn't
trade my K3 for three of them. It's also 'prettier' to move the K3 on the
operating desk or take to FD than one of the 50-60 lb giants. I couldn't care
less what it looks like on the outside anyway. I care what the insides DO.
I'm not a full contester but a DXer. Just my opinion.

[Elecraft] Front load washer

2009-09-09 Thread r miles
In the 2 yr.s we've had a front loader I've experienced no noise problem. In 9
yr.s at this QTH I went thru 3 American brand top loaders.Poor construction
quality control. I was finally fed up and bought an LG [ S Korean company].
Six months ago I bought a new K3. At last I found a top of the line product
that was made in the USA. I wish all things I buy were as well made as my radio.

[Elecraft] broken AF knob

2009-07-25 Thread r miles
I've only had my K3 #2626 5 months. The AF knob loosened today. When I finally
found an alan small enough to tighten it the knob split before it was even
snugged up. Not cranked. Wasn't there a thread about this about the time I
purchased my K3? Is this a common problem? Is there an improved knob available?
I just sent Elecraft an e mail so I hope to get their reply Monday.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 amp

2009-04-09 Thread r miles
Only familiar with Heathkit amps. Driven an SB200 SB220 with various solid
state
radios. Ic 730,TS 430,Ft757,IC746. I used an Ampkeyer between the radios the
Heath amps.
There are various interfaces. Some radios it's over kill but some need it.
It also a safety too. The Heath turns on 120v to key the relay. Lots of new
radios use a reed relay or electronic switching. 120v WAY too much for them.
$30
is not a big expense compared to fixing a radio or amp. Elecraft says I can key
my Ameritron 811h but I use the Ampkeyer interface anyway. Can't be too
careful. I saved my Kopeks for a while to get my beautiful K3.I don't want to
have to run the back up radio. My opinion is 'better safe than sorry'
