Hank,I had a similar problem earlier this week following a Windows update. The COM port showed up in Device Manager, but the software package I was using (not the KX3 Utility) couldn't talk to it. Re: [Elecraft] Auto-spot, tuning aids, and the arcane history of CW pitch-matching
Re: "Does anyone know of a non-synthesized transceiver that didn't have the CW offset problem?" My TenTec 540 doesn't have that problem, but my much older TenTec PM-3A does. If my memory is correct, the Heathkit HW8 has the problem, but they fixed it in the HW9 with a small capacitor that switches in and out for RX/TX to shift the VFO. There are others. When searching and pouncing in a contest, you had to spot the transmitter before every contact. Spotting required turning one of the rotary switches on the transmitter, a cumbersome process. Imagine doing that a couple thousand times in a weekend. At some point, we came up with the idea to hook a foot switch up to do the spotting, which made it much easier, and save a lot of wear and tear on the rotary switch, not to mention the operator's wrist. In those days, 40-50 years ago, transceivers just didn't work well on CW, so almost all CW operators used separate transmitters and receivers. Some, like the Drake line, could transceive, but had the same problem on CW. Transceivers didn't account for the BFO offset, and there was no RIT or XIT. If you called another station in transceive mode, you would be 700 Hz or so off frequency. Two transceivers pretty much couldn't work each other at all. Sometime while I was inactive in the late 70's and 80's, that problem was solved, and we no longer had to spot before every contact. I think that solution had to wait for frequency synthesis, as it otherwise would have required additional (expensive) crystals. Does anyone know of a non-synthesized transceiver that didn't have the CW offset problem? 73, Scott K9MA On 1/21/2019 23:09, Wayne Burdick wrote: > Elecraft's auto-spot and CWT features -- available on the K3/K3S/KX2/KX3 -- > are very useful tools for CW operators, especially those not experienced in > pitch-matching. Re: [Elecraft] KAT 500 and open wire
Re: "...what is the old dual air coil Heathkit B-1balun, a current or voltage type? If I remember correctly, they are 4:1 ratio." From the Heathkit manual: "The Heathkit Balun Coil Set, Model B-1 is a convenient transmitter accessory which has the capability of matching unbalanced coax lines, used on most modern transmitters, to balanced lines to either 75 ohms or 300 ohms impedance". The manual discusses its use with a dipole (~75 ohms) or a folded dipole (~300 ohms), and the analogy of using a line transmission line to get the desired impedance transformation. It is a very short but interesting read. The assembly manual shows how to wire it in 1:1 or 4:1 configurations. The schematic is identical to the Elecraft BL2 , except it uses air core coils instead of ferrite coils, and there is no switch to easily change between impedance ratios. I have never used my BL-2, so I cannot vouch for its effectiveness. I have often wondered if it might be compromised by the 2 bifilar wound "non-self-shielding" air core coils tightly packed into a metal enclosure resulting in enough capacitance or magnetic coupling to each other and the enclosure to reduce its effectiveness. I do, however, open it up occasionally and admire those beautiful inductors! Re: [Elecraft] P3 parts falling off
Re: "It is as it just fell off!" It probably did. It is likely the surface mount joints were solder starved during original board processing. They can sometimes make surprisingly good electrical contact, at least in low current applications. Without a careful close examination with a good light and magnifying glass, it is all just guessing. Re: [Elecraft] Avoiding costly lightning damage to your radios gear
Re: "Spark plugs fire at 12,000 to 25,000 Volts. Some require as much as 45,000 V." That is at the pressure inside the combustion chamber. At atmospheric pressure, they fire at much lower voltages; however, Walter's point is still valid. Turn on voltage is far more reliable with gas discharge tubes. Sparkplugs were probably more helpful with tube gear than with today's solid state gear.
