[Elecraft] k2 - low volume.. almost there.. please help!
okay, i think i have this almost nailed.. i traced the signal through the IF crystal filter, and here's what i got: i went from W2... across each of the crystals.. when i touched W2 with a probe, i got LOUD noise.. as i went down along the chain, the signal got a little softer, but not much.. this continued until i got to X11.. on the front end of X11, i got signal.. on the far end of X11, it was the signal was totally dead.. i did notice that the s-meter dropped a bit.. i have a feeling i am ALMOST there.. please help! thanks! 73 de kb8qpt ___ peace, sergio photographer, journalist, visionary www.village-buzz.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] k2 - IF amplifier alignment..

[Elecraft] k2 - pll reference oscillator problems..
hi, everyone.. i am now at the alignment and test phase, part II... and am having a little problem.. under the 4MHZ oscillator calibration, i hooked up the frequency counter probe and plugged it into TP3.. but i get a zero reading.. well, the digits fluctuate in the 10ths place.. but it's pretty much zero.. so i read that i could have a problem with the PLL reference oscillator. i am guessing that my probe is good, as it worked in the previous testing.. so i went to the trouble shooting section.. and built the RF little probe.. (by the way, i LOVE how elecraft uses spare pieces of building materials to let you build your own probe!) under the pll reference oscillator and VCO section on page E10.. i did the following measurements.. reference oscillator output - 1.274v - expected value - 0.8-1.8v . [Elecraft] K2 - RF choke identification
let me start out with the fact that i am colorblind.. this isn't too bad for resistors, as i can always use an ohmmeter to verify.. but for rf chokes, this is killing me.. i usually ask my son and wife to help me sort them, but this time, even they are having alot of trouble sorting them out.. it looks like we have them all sorted out but one.. okay, i have not been working very diligently on my k2.. i have had tons to do at work, and any time i have been in my workshop, i have been playing with the k1.. but i have just made some headway.. i have been using the no rework kit (which i TOTALLY suggest to anyone building a k2..) so i took some extra time getting the manual all set up... i have finished the controller board, and the front panel, and got it all mounted and ready to rock... all resistance checks passed with flying colors.. my comments so far on the building: when i first thought about building a k2, i thought that i would be shipped a bag of millions of toroids and 200 different types of wire to wind a bunch of exotic eyeball busters.. not the case.. without counting.. it looks like cake.. since i built the k1 first, i kinda learned the 'elecraft way' on that one first.. and made a few mistakes by not following the 'elecraft way..' when it came to building the k2, i just relaxed, and used the force, and there were no problems.. let me explain briefly what i mean by 'the elecraft way'.. the manuals are so easy to follow, and so complete, that you are always tempted to second guess them (mostly if you have built other electronics kits in the past). to think ahead of the manual, and goof something up.. to worry about weird part numbers, and not relax.. once you realize that a complete parts inventory (with pictures and alternate part numbers!), a complete schematic, building photos, and TONS of other goodies are in the manual, you should have no problems.. all that being said.. the k2 is fun to build so far.. and a breeze... i am hoping to get to the next testing phase after i go to the movies tonight.. elecraft should make hifi gear, too.. that would rock.. anyway.. 72 de kb8qpt.. -- ___ peace, sergio photographer, journalist, visionary www.village-buzz.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Those are just jumper wires in the audio path (see the schematic), so there is nothing special about them other than that they need to exist. If you plan to install either the KAF2 or the KDSP2, intall the jumpers so that you can easily remove them. [Elecraft] k1 - no signals - made progress - need help..
thanks no N0SS, i have finally narrowed down where my problems on my k1 are.. in signal tracing, i actually heard TONS of signals through my radio.. i have a feeling that it has been broken since day 1... i can't WAIT to get this fixed and on the air.. i have never heard so many signals on my radio.. WOW! anyway.. here's where i am now.. test point 1 - T1.. CHECK! test point 2 - D5... CHECK! test point 3 - J2-1 ... P2-1 BAD BAD BAD!! okay... so i found that on the front side of D5, i got a signal.. on the back site.. B!!! no signal.. the first thing i did was replace D5 and D14.. of course, i should have read N0SS's full document first.. but .. well, you know.. so i replaced the diodes, and got the same results.. so then, i checked to see if there was 6V on the anode of D5.. In RX mode, you should (I believe) have something less than 6VDC... it starts out as 6VDC from 6R/AUX, but might be lower by the time it gets to the anode of D5. [Elecraft] k1 - not able to align..
when i ordered my k2, i also ordered the noise generator... i ordered this to help align my k1 that i have been having problems with.. on the k1, i am missing all sorts of signals that my cheapie regen receiver is hitting loud and clear.. i am not sure what i am supposed to hear from the noise generator, but it sorta sounds like loudish static, BUT. even connecting the output to the input of my regen, i don't really hear anything.. anyway.. i had the internal tuner installed, so i took it out, and jumpered the board back to k1.. then, i put jumpred pins 2 and 10 on j2(i think it's j2)... anyway... on all bands but 18mhz, i just can't seem to peak the receiver.. 18mhz peaks really well.. and i am comfortable that it's correct.. the rest are just guesses.. anyone have any ideas? thanks! -- ___ peace, sergio photographer, journalist, visionary www.village-buzz.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
