Re: [Elecraft] K-Pod button problems
Hello John & the Elecraft Gang, I have a similar problem with one of my KPOD switches. (I also use the KPOD for RIT when I'm running in CW and RTTY.) In my case, I have F3 programmed to toggle in and out of Diversity RX. Tap F3 = DIV; Tap & Hold F3 = clear DIV. For many years this worked like a charm, but recently when operating SPLIT, if I tap F3, it clears SPLIT. If I put the radio back into SPLIT, Tap & Hold F3 again clears SPLIT. The same DIV on/off with the SUB button on the radio does not mess with SPLIT. If this function hadn't operated correctly before, I would naturally suspect a programming issue. Could this somehow be defective switches? Reload firmware? BTW: the F3 Tap / F3 Tap & Hold by themselves work flawlessly. Any ideas much appreciated! The K-Pod worked great for RIT control. I tried to use it to occasionally switch my RX antenna in and out but then I was quickly reminded why I do not use this function and instead use the RX ANT button on the radio. I have the F4 button programed so a quick press toggles the RX antenna and a long press switches the radio to 40m. What happens on random occasions is tapping the F4 button will switch the radio to 160m instead of toggling the RX antenna input. It is really annoying to be running stations on 40m and then the radio just jumps to another band. The QSO gets messed up and there is a risk of losing the run frequency. Incidentally a long press of F8 is programmed to switch the radio to 160 and that was definitely not accidently touched. I am unsure of the firmware version. Is this a known problem? Is here a cure? [Elecraft] OT: Grease your DELETE Key
OK, I'll make it somewhat Elecraft related... For FD this year I will be using a KX3 in a 1A Battery effort. To power the KX3 and most of the station equipment, I will be using a solar-charged battery system that is a permanent part of my home station. I have already tried a GOWISE Power inverter because it was billed as being rf quiet. Unfortunately, it was a terrific hash generator! So my question: Does anyone in this group have experience with quiet inverters? Can anyone make an experience-based recommendation? Josep, Apparently the 100 Watt PA has been disabled. Go to "Config" (Press and hold MENU), rotate VFO B until you see "KPA3", then rotate VFO A to select "PA nor." Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Issue
"However, what I'm seeing is that when the amp is in OPER mode, my receive signal strength drops way, way off to the point I have to go full AF volume to hear signals. If I put the amp in STBY, signal levels go back to normal." These exact symptoms have been associated in past reports with a failure of the TR switch PIN diodes. Jack's idea of incorrect band can be easily confirmed, or eliminated, by looking at the KPA500 band display. Andy, k3wyc Jim, Andy et al, I weighed in on this thread last evening from memory in response to Andy's comment, above. By age 77, I should have learned not to rely on memory. As it turns out, my memory was faulty. So, even though it appears many have pointed Jim to a useful, unrelated solution, I will now provide the correct information about the issue and fix with my KPA500 almost one year ago. At first glance, my symptoms were nearly identical to what Jim is reporting: With ALL control cables between the K3s and the KPA500 completely disconnected (only the input and output coax cables connected to the amp), every time the amp is manually switched from "STBY" to "OPER" the receive signal on the K3s dropped about 20 dB. As many suggested, the problem was in the T/R circuit. In my case the culprit was R7. This 51 Ohm resistor was toast -- completely open. My fix was to parallel a pair of 1/4 Watt, 100 Ohm resistors across the R7 pads. Problem solved. The KPA500 has been on good behavior since. Hopefully, this information might be useful to someone in the future. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Question
"When I engage OPER the input signal is attenuated by ~20 dB." Thanks to all for the prompt and informative replies. Apparently the culprit has been found. Several reported the exact same issue, one as recently as one week ago. According to one reply, an Elecraft Tech told him, "This is a known failure mode." (Not very encouraging!) Here is a copy of an Elecraft repair report: Reported problem(s): Receive signal is attenuated when in operate. Receive signal is normal when in standby. Problem(s) found: Confirmed problem. Found that D8, D9 and R7 in the T/R circuit had failed. Repair(s) performed: Replaced D8, D9, and R7 on the LPF board. Looks like my KPA500 is in for some "belly up" treatment! One thing has me a bit puzzled though. If this is a known weakness, why hasn't Elecraft designed a "beefed up" mod? My amp had 5 updates / mods done while it was at the factory. This "known failure" was not one of them. Thanks again, for all the help! [Elecraft] KPA500 Question
I just purchased a used KPA500 (SN 0456) from a close friend. The amp was just back to the factory for several repairs and was thoroughly tested. The report reads, "KPA500 #0456 meets or exceeds all factory specifications." My friend unboxed the amp and made several QSOs to be sure all issues were fixed. He then personally delivered the amp to my QTH. Over the weekend I got the amp added to my operating position and was quite surprised to find that input signals are attenuated significantly when the amp is switched from STBY to OPER. No, this is NOT the issue with having the aux cable and the PA key line connected at the same time. This is with NO PA key, and NO aux cable connected. The amp has no connection but RF input and output. It is independent of band. This is with a matched antenna, band switched manually with the front panel buttons. When I engage OPER the input signal is attenuated by ~20 dB. On the TX side, the amp is fine. On most bands I get full rated output into a dummy load with approx. 20 Watts of drive from the K3. I noticed on the service report, one of the tests was, "Tested receive attenuation and IMD." I'm curious about "receive attenuation." This would seem to be related to my problem. Looking at the block diagram, I surmise something in the TR switch is malfunctioning. Before I bug an already-overloaded Elecraft support, I am open to suggestions. Am I missing something obvious? TIA es 73, Jim - WS6X P.S. Yes, I have read the manual, and scoured the archives. They will spoof an unsuspecting, legitimate ham, who does not include an email address in their QRZ listing. There are several tell-tale signs of such an operation, and such was the case yesterday with the offer to sell me KAT500, SN 0296. I wrote this group yesterday, hoping that perhaps the rightful owner would step forward. Sure enough, last evening the real owner of the equipment contacted me. Re: [Elecraft] K3s Notch Filter
Hi Bernie, I think the trick is to press and hold the "NTCH" button to enter the manual notch mode. If you only tap the button, even though the display reads "Manual" and the icon appears, it is not really in the manual notch mode. For example, my CW sidetone pitch is set to 560 Hz. If I tune a carrier to 560, and fully engage the notch mode, I can completely null a carrier when I tune VFO B to 560 Hz. The other clue: If you only tap "NTCH", adjusting VFO B only displays frequency, whereas pushing and holding will cause VFO B knob to display the notch filter frequency. Hope this helps. 73, Jim - WS6X -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of Bernie and Cheryl Sent: Wednesday, December 16, 2020 1:16 AM To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3s Notch Filter Dear Folks: I have a question about use of the Notch filter on my K3s.
