Re: [Elecraft] K1 backlight kit
The link in the email you sent is similar to what I did. It did not work with the original LCD. Putting a white sheet behind the original LCD did nothing as it was opaque. I had to get a transreflective one, the key here is it's translucent to permit back-lighting. It was long ago and I don't have the info where I got it. IDK, but it is possible that production switched to using the transreflective type at some point. I'll pm you some pix. Morning Lou, I looked on the Elecraft site and the part number for the transreflective LCD is E600015. A search for that part number on the site turned up nothing. So they don’t appear to be stocking that part anymore. If someone reading the reflector knows the source for that part, I will see if I can find one. If not, I found this approach — https://bit.ly/3fgvtL2 — to adding a backlight to a built K1. With a little tinkering, the latter should work as well. Thanks Lou! Re: [Elecraft] K1 backlight kit
If you can't find a kit: I modded my K1 to illuminate the LCD back in '03, before the mod kit was available. It's pretty easy to do (a white sticker, two leds, and a resistor) and works very well, but it does require a transreflective LCD in place of the original reflective one supplied back then. I tried the mod with original LCD and it didn't work IDK if later ones came standard with the transreflective LCD. If you have or can get a transreflective LCD, I'd be happy to describe the mod and email some photos that detail the mod and show the results. [Elecraft] K1 Backlight Kit Insulator Card
I have finally started to install this kit as I needed to pop the rig open to fix a problem and wonder if I'm missing a part. When I opened the plastic envelope, I have four parts: 2 resistors, the LCD display, and the Backlight (with pins A K). According to the parts list, I should have a 5th part called Insulator Card Assembly #E850215 which, according to step #14, includes double-sided foam tape. There is a small piece of masking tape on the Backlight itself. Methinks I'm missing this Insulator card, right? 73, Clark WU4B (x-KE4RQ) -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K1-Backlight-Kit-Insulator-Card-tp5346426p5346426.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K1 Backlight Kit Insulator Card
Yes, you are missing that part. You will need to contact Elecraft and ask for the missing piece - on the contact page at Elecraft site look for the e-mail for missing and spare parts request. [Elecraft] K1 Backlight Kit
Thanks, Tom (N0SS) Wayne (N6KR) for the backlight upgrade for my K1. Now, the rig is complete! While the kit and instructions are first rate, this upgrade is not for the faint of heart. Although I was careful not to use any more heat than necessary in removing the cut pins from the old LCD, I did have one PCB trace lift up. To restore the path, I fabricated a jumper from a piece of the thin enamelled wire left over from the K1 kit. I'd suggest forgetting about desoldering braid and solder suckers to clear solder from the PC board. With the help of the XYL, we were easily able to clear the holes using a toothpick (just push and twist). I think the toothpick helps to carry away some of heat, too, protecting the PC board traces. Well done, Tom Wayne. 73, Jim KM5M - Nunquam Secundum ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. It would appear to be somewhat taxing, just looking at the effort required to remove the old LCD. I'd like to review the instructions for this mod, but I can't find the instruction sheet for this upgrade on the Elecraft site. Since I use my K1 as a battery-powered portable rig 95 percent of the time, my major concern would be the increase in steady-state receiver current consumption of 10 to 20 percent for display illumination that can't be turned off without using some ersatz technique. Maybe it's time for a K1A, with menu controllable LCD illumination AND a display that shows the whole frequency at once and not just the last three digits. I realize that, due to exhausted I/O capability in the current K1 MPU system, these suggested features would *not* be trivial to implement, and that they would require complete replacement of the re-designed front panel board to backfit to older K1s. I'd be willing to pay for one of those. Realistically, I don't expect to see any further development of the K1 product line. I suspect that KX1 kit production costs are significantly below those of a K1 kit.
