Suitable 4-40 x 5/16" thumbscrews are available from Elecraft as Part
No. E700050.

These are used in the KX1.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/100 Kit #307 Lift Off (Druz fasteners)

2008-01-29 Thread WILLIS COOKE
My Aircraft Spruce catalog calls them Dzus fasteners.
They come in lots of sizes and real expensive, however
they are much larger and more expensive than a 4-40
screw. And the installation tools are much more
expensive than a #1 Phillips, so I will take my K3 the
way it was designed and buy some more screws if I lose
any.

Actually, they are called Druz fasteners, and allow for a quick disconnect
with a 1/4 turn rotation. My company uses them to secure the side and back
panels onto the diagnostic medical equipment that I service. We've used them
for over 20 years now. Nice for larger panels, but -not- appropriate for
something like the K3. The ones I use are fairly lagre, and require a
rectangular cutout in the instrument frame to accept the receptacle that the
fastener 'screw' locks into.

I had lots of spares screws of the variety I have lots of..

A few spare (rare) case screws would be appreciated.

Now everything is calibrated I'm off to make my first SSB QSO with
the rig. CW will have to wait till I'm more relaxed.

If you count them beforehand and know you had a couple of extras it's not a
problem. Also if Ernesto or Marina (or whoever is filling the bag) is
working to the exact number, there is bound to be the odd time when they
make a mistake and you're a screw short, which is a pain if you then have to
wait for Elecraft to send one. If they are intending to put in a couple
extra, you're not going to end up short (unless they've had a really bad
day).

BTW I always wondered what happened to Marina after Stingray ended. Glad she
found gainful employment :)

I third this motion - one or two are bound the roll off the table, with
aging eyes and poor colour sight it is not easy to find the little
blighters!

I always like to see spares packaged separately from the main hardware.
Knowing you've ended up with the exact parts count is a tremendous stress
reliever. When I am faced with seeing extra hardware after construction is
complete, I am left wondering if the pieces were missed somewhere during the
assembly routine.

If you are going to be taking them apart so often to show folks :o) perhaps
some nice black knurled thumb screws would be in order.

I'll agree to that one, Stewart. There were plenty of pan heads as spares
but the flat heads were exactly the right number. Fortunately, I have
three left over from the assembly of my K1.

[Elecraft] K3/100 Kit #307 Lift Off

2008-01-29 Thread Stewart Baker
Put the rig together in about 7hrs of continual (contest like)
assembly. No problems at all. Things went together like a Swiss
Watch.

Had to go bed sometime, but before then played with the final
result. Very impressive, and I'm sure that how good it is will
only grow with time. Well done guys.

Now need to complete the calibration.

Only slight negative is that there should be a few more flat black
case screws supplied as spares. Exact amount needed supplied,
however I am sure that I will lose one or two when I open the case
to show off the craftsmanship...

More to follow.
