Re: [Elecraft] K3 - No RF output - Fault resolved

2020-06-17 Thread G4BVH
Very many thanks to everyone who responded to my request for help. Happily
the fault turned out to be something very simple. Rob at Elecraft suggested
the LPA FETs may have failed as the current measurements I had taken
indicated the FETs were not drawing the bias current they should be. I
checked the voltage on the FETs on the LPA module and found it to be 6.5V.
Looking at the circuit diagram this should have been 12V as the supply to
them comes directly from the 12V supply. I noticed the 12 pin edge connector
on the module did not seem to be fully seated. I eased it into place, the
FET voltage returned to a solid 12V and the rig is now functioning normally.

Again thanks to everyone who replied.

no RF.Some have suggested a bad internal cable connection or bad board edge

[Elecraft] K3 - No RF output

2020-06-15 Thread G4BVH
Hi,

I have had a fault develop on my K3 whereby there is no RF being produced. I
have emailed the details to Elecraft support and am hoping to receive a
reply with suggestions. However, I thought I would also send the details
here in case anyone can suggest something to try or investigate further.

I have a K3, serial number 6482 which I built from a kit. It has worked
flawlessly since I built it. I have the 400Hz and 2.7kHz (2.8kHz?) filters
fitted and the 100W module but no other additions.

A few days ago, it was running 20W of FT8 and I suddenly discovered that it
hadn't been transmitting. Everything appeared that it should be
transmitting: the red TX LED was lit, it was not in TEST mode (TX not

definitely nothing coming out on any mode. There is no RF if I wind down the
power below the 10W level, there is the usual relay click going through 12W
- 13W and still no RF above this level, ie on towards 100W.

The K3 metering shows 13.5V and 0.84 on receive, 0.97A on the lower power
level setting and 1.18A on the higher power setting on transmit. The RF
output bar graph always displays 1 bar on transmit no matter what the power
level is set but there is no RF coming out.

I tried the TX calibration but it fails saying the power level didn't reach
that required.

The receiver works fine and I can hear the CW side tone and SSB, AM and FM
audio monitoring as normal.

I have removed and reseated the front panel and also the 3 coax patch leads
behind the front panel but this made no difference. There is a yellow LED,
D33, on the main board which is lit on receive and goes out on transmit.

The latest firmware is installed - I updated this a month or so ago.

TX inhibit is OFF and the 20A breaker has not tripped.

Any thoughts or suggestions gratefully received.

Very many thanks and 73,

Peter, G4BVH

[Elecraft] K3 no RF Output

2019-07-22 Thread Harald Fritzsche
Hello Readers,
i need to understand which point in the signal path i have to control/measure
to investigate further damages in my K3 after water damage event.
yes, VOX is on.
When i have the place where the issue starts, i want to understand what is
causing that behavior.
Currently receiver is working, but i have no RF output from PA. So i want to
check the TX path.
During TX i see no output from DAC to TXIF in CW, i would expect a 15KHz signal
there. But i find during RX on ADC an input signal(bandwidth 2Khz @ 16KHz).
I only see an 8230KHz signal at roofing filter input.

First: ist this assumption right, to see 15KHz after DAC output? If yes on wich
pin of which jumper?
If correct, what can cause, that the signal is not appearing.

Probably i could replace the RF board by a new one, but i want to avoid it.

[Elecraft] K3 no RF Output

2019-07-21 Thread Harald Fritzsche
Dear Readers,

i made a water damage of my K3. Meanwhile Receiver is working again, after some
repairs.

But there is still no RF output.

Main symptom is, that in case of TX (key down in CW) i find at J7 (8.215 MHz
TXIF1) a 8.230MHz signal, but no signal passing the filter, expected
approxymatetly 8.215Mhz too.

Any suggestions?

Scott,

Try running TX Gain Calibration with K3 Utility. If that fails, try
running it on 30 meters manually (see the manual for the procedure).

If it still fails contact Elecraft K3support.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 no RF output

2012-04-29 Thread Jim N7US
Todd,

I experienced the same problem a couple of months ago. I never noticed a
fault, but maybe it did it, and I didn't notice.

I emailed Gary (supp...@elecraft.com) and tried the EE INIT including
reloading previously saved configurations. I ended up sending the radio
(S/N 3598) in. Keith found an IC that wasn't properly soldered, but really
nothing else. It never malfunctioned while there. He did extended burn-in
sessions and installed a couple updates, including De-Oxit to the front
panel connections. It's worked fine since then. I was charged for an hour
of time, and I imagine he spent more time than that.

It was unsettling to not have conclusively determined the problem,
especially since it seemed to happen without warning, but it's been working
fine.

My K3 produces no RF in transmit at the 10 watt or 100 watt levels. The
display shows two horizontal lines during transmit and shows 0.0 watts
output. I have loaded older (4.47) firmware and then reloaded newer (4.48).
I have done a re-initialization and reloaded all parameters. I removed the
KPA3 and reinstalled it. No noticeable burned components were found. I
believe the K3 did show, very briefly, a fault 6 and fault 7 but it was a
very brief flash in the display. I thought SWR sensing diodes might have
been the cause so I replaced D36 and D37. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] K3 no RF output

2012-04-29 Thread T Gahagan
Thanks to you guys for the ideas. The voltage does not vary when going to
transmit mode. It stays a constant 13.5 volts and the current drain stays
at about 1.18 amps. The horizontal lines are two lcd (end to end
horizontal) lines that take the place of the frequency when I go to
transmit. As soon as I go back to receive the frequency returns. These
lines generally indicate that a device is not installed as I recall such as
dvr3, kat3, etc. My wife says we had some distant lightning while I was at
the DX convention but all equipment was grounded. I'm suspicious that
static fried something. Bypassing the KPA3 does not make any difference. I
do hear a side tone in CW but again, there is no RF being produced.
Initially the problem was not being able to do 5 watt tx gain and the K3
shut off on its own. I was able to see power output while doing the 50 watt
tx gain but as stated now there is no RF being produced at all. Thanks
again and it looks like a trip to Elecraft for the K3.
