You could always try setting the noise gate to the point where the beeps are
not heard.

I found the source of this annoyance to be the SW TONE being set to ON.
My question is, how do I keep the beeps,

This might help: here's a PTT button you can build from parts at Radio Shack.
Use the PTT RCA jack instead of the 15-pin accessory connector; I just
forgot.

Yes, understood - no offence taken and I hope none given.
I understand from some of the serious VHF contesters over here that it is

be possible to construct something simply, but thought I see if it is
something that could be simply incorporated into the firmware.

Rather like noisily breaking wind at church in the middle of the prayer.
This caused by the shenanigans by CB operators on the 27 Mhz. band. Sadly
duplicated by newbie amateur operators on 2 meter FM band frequently.
Generally considered rude operating practices.

Dave, don't let them grind you down. A roger beep is very common is radio
service, just not in the ham bands. It is a common sense feature that most
folks (including astronauts) find helpful. Just not most hams.

Hams say that on FM and AM phone you know the other fellow is done because
the carrier is gone. On a repeater, there is a tone. On sideband, he says
over.

I would bet they sell 1,000 times more FRS radios with roger beep that all
the ham radios combined. If you like roger beep, buy a mic that has it and
be happy. I would draw the line, however, at echo and barnyard sounds.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 - Roger beep

2007-05-04 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Yes, it has a legitimate use. It indicates when one person stops talking
during informal use of a radio channel such as when the astronauts are
talking.

It replaces the spoken word over that is standard in professional,
military and Amateur use.

So there are very few situations where it has any value in Amateur work. VHF
FM repeaters, for example, sometimes use the beep to signal when the
repeater drops the carrier, since that happens after a delay following the
last transmission. That is, two or more people might be talking through the
repeater for a while, then when the conversation ends, a few seconds later
the repeater will drop its carrier with a beep to signify that has
happened, since there's no background noise to indicate the carrier is gone.

It might be helpful in an SSB round table, except that it'd be darn
irritating. There'd be a beep every few seconds! Short transmissions with
brief pauses to be sure the frequency is clear are a much better way to
avoid doubling transmissions with someone. After all, it only means the
individual has stopped talking and nothing more.
