Re: [Elecraft] K3 Microphone Choices
Mark I use a Heil PR-781 boom mic that was designed for the high end amateur transceivers or so Bob Heil told me when I started to buy a PR-40. I thought quite a bit of him after that because the PR-40 was double the cost of the 781, but I have always received excellent reports with it. I used it with my FTDX-5000MP and now my 2 K3's in a SO2R setup. 73, Fred/N0AZZ -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of pastor...@verizon.net Sent: Wednesday, March 13, 2013 7:29 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Microphone Choices Good evening. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Microphone Choices
One thing I did want to add to that post is I have mic's that have cost from $35-550 including the Yaesu MD-200 the $400 desk mic and a couple of professional recording ones. The PR-781 did the very best for me for several reasons, I used it only on radios that had a full EQ for the transmit so it could be tailored to my voice and a mic that added nothing i.e. flat as it should be. Plus once you go to a boom mic you will never want a desk mic again, well if all you do is rag chew you might not. Hands free operation is great for DX'ing and an occasional contest looking for band countries to type/write with. Apparently the ATR-30 has been discontinued. The ATR-1300 seems to be the replacement even though the ATR-30 was labeled professional and the ATR-1300 consumer. The ATR-1300 is $18.99 at BH Photo (www.bhphotovideo.com). One note about any prosumer mic - you will need to use an external means of T/R switching, e.g. foot switch or VOX, since those mics do not include a PTT switch unlike communications microphones. 73, ... Hi Mark, I use the Heil HM-12, and find that it works extremely well w/ the K3. It's insensitive to room noise, and the K3's TX EQ, TX Gate, and compression adjustments will enable you to optimize it for DX or easy on the ears rag chews -- or anything in between. If you'd like, we can set up a sked sometime and you can hear what it sounds like for yourself. 73, Dale WA8SRA Good evening. I have a K3 and really love it. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Microphone Choices
Hi Mark, Hi all Good morning from Australia, re the request for recommendations for microphone / headset combo's. Like you I had been using a Kenwood MC60 microphone . I purchased a Koss SB40 headset with dynamic microphone; the mic was very sensitive to position, (seemed very directional and had objectional bass from proximity when correctly positioned), eventually the R/hand driver unit went O/C with a lead fault. I bit the bullet bought a Yamaha CM500, which, as standard has an electret microphone and external battery bias box for gear not electret compatible. Since receiving the CM500 and using it with the K3 (S/No:4520), I am completely satisfied with the CM500 Mic headset combination; after setting the Mic Gain range to low transmit equalisation with plenty of bass cut up to 200Hz and a little treble lift above 2Khz I have been receiving unsolicited reports of superb audio from the K3 with the CM500 headset. I have had the headset for about 2 months so far, it has definitely exceeded all my expectations: sturdy construction, not heavy, good ear pads (cover the ears well as I wear glasses have hearing aids) the headset sits well over both and is OK for hours of use with no discomfort. By the way I do not use the hearing aids in combination with the headset, but, at times, I have slipped the headset on to get in to call a DX station before being swamped by other callers -or- qsy etc, I have been suprised how comfortable the CM500 has been over both the glasses hearing aids. The added bonus is that the CM500 is about 1/4 of the Heil haedset and much better built (I have both) and the CM500 is way in front on both counts (Price construction). My 2 Cents Worth. 73 from Eric VK3AX. On 3/14/2013 11:28 AM, pastor...@verizon.net wrote: Good evening. I have a K3 and really love it. I am looking at purchasing a new microphone pretty soon. but if he moves it to a non K3 rig he is back to having the lows... That's why one adds a 0.1 uF capacitor in series with the mic hot lead in the base. Take your time and try 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 uF to find one that fits your voice and the rig. It will roll off the excess bass and provide a rising characteristic through out the entire voice range. The MC-90 actually includes switch selected .22 uF and .047 uF capacitors with 1.2K shunt across the mic line to the rig. These techniques have been around for 40 years or more ... it used to be a .001 uF in series with the high impedance mics to the Collins, Drake and Heath rigs in the day. 73, ... On 3/13/2013 6:34 PM, Joe Subich, W4TV wrote: Use the TX EQ - don't waste your money on another mic. I strongly agree. It's very easy to make almost any decent mike sound good with a K3. Many K3 users, especially those who are competitive contesters and DXers, like the Yamaha CM500 boom headset. It's very comfortable, even after a long weekend contesting, and both the mic and the headphones sound VERY good. Not only that, it's very inexpensive -- about $45 delivered from vendors like BH Photo in NYC. You can buy three for the price of one Heil, and it sounds better than the Heils I've heard. The Heil mics are over-hyped and wildly overpriced. You're paying for Bob Heil's advertising budget, which is huge, not for his mics, which are cheaply built and not that comfortable. How competitive is the audio from a CM500 with a K3? Well, as a lark, I worked ARRL DX SSB QRP. (DX contests aren't competitive from California, because it's very tough to work EU, which is where the mults are.) Even running QRP, I worked a dozen EU stations in 9 countries, a total of 41 countries. Believe me, if you can work a SSB DX contest QRP, you've got really competitive audio! BTW -- I also worked TX5K on 80-10 (except 30, of course). Re: [Elecraft] K3 Microphone Choices
IMHO Kenwood mikes are better than Icom. If one uses the back connections, one needs to have a separate PTT connection or use VOC. I use a foot switch. With connection in front, everything can be connected altogether. As everyone says, almost any mic can be equalized in K3. The difference comes with heavy processing, which is well implemented in K3 and very effective in pileups. Different mics have different noise level, some of them very high. From mics I tried, Heil HC-5 has the lowest noise and also sounds well without any equalization. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Microphone Choices
Mark, I currently have a Kenwood TS-480s with their standard handheld mike The hand held mic from the TS-480 will not work without a change in the connector (it uses an RJ-45 connector). plus I have an older TS-940s with a desk mike. Most desk mics that are used with a TS-940 will work with the K3. The exceptions are the MC-55, MC-60A, MC-80, MC-85 which use +8V on pin 5. The externally powered Kenwood desk mics can be used with the K3 by moving the wire on pin 5 to pin 6 in the 8 pin mic plug (or using batteries). Most non-Kenwood mics used with the TS-940 were dynamic and will work with the K3 with no modification. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] K3 Microphone Choices
You got it all backwards, Nate. I said stupid in reference ONLY to the question I was asking because I honestly figured I must be missing some obvious reason why he would take the trouble to rework a microphone, potentially spending half the cost of a new computer mic buying a different connector/adapter for the old mic. I even checked to see if his preference was a hand mic versus a desk mic, but since he spoke about one of each that didn't seem to be the issue. And since a hand mic and a desk mic are clearly different, having a mic we like on hand didn't seem likely to be the issue either. I have an Icom mic that I liked and it still works fine, but after seeing how easily the K3 accepts a standard, inexpensive, universally available computer mic available in almost every imaginable configuration from desk mic to hand mic to lapel mic it would never occur to me to spend the effort to modify an old one that almost certainly wouldn't work any better. But I'm not him, so I simply asked what to him might appear to be a stupid question, and I tried to let him know up front that I acknowledged the possibility of it being so. Thanks for the advice on how to wordsmith my posts, though. 73, Dave AB7E On 9/29/2010 5:08 AM, Nate Bargmann wrote: * On 2010 28 Sep 22:54 -0500, David Gilbert wrote: This may be a stupid question, but why are you trying to make one of those mics work? Duly noted. :-) Thanks for the advice on how to wordsmith my posts, though. Glad I could help. ;-) I suppose it never really occured to me to use a computer mic in an RF environment due to the possibility of a poorly shielded cable allowing RF into the transmitted audio. Evidently that hasn't been an issue at your shack (which is good) but some folks do seem to fight that issue. For my part, the junk box had everything I needed as the MD-100 has two jacks on the base, one an 8P8C and the other an 8 pin round. The supplied cable has an 8P8C plug and 8 pin round plug at either end so it can be used with certain Yaesu rigs that have either the 8P8C jack or 8 pin round jack. I made up a cable with an 8 pin round at each end, one wired for the MD-100 and the other for the K3. Should I want to use the mic with my FT-890 or another Yaesu radio, I can pull the stock cable out of the drawer and plug it in and away I go. It should be a very flexible solution for me. 73, de Nate -- The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist fears this is true. [Elecraft] K3 Microphone Choices
Hi Guys, I am looking at purchasing a new K3 but am unsure of what would be a good microphone to use. I currently have a Kenwood TS-480s with their standard handheld mike plus I have an older TS-940s with a desk mike. I would think that neither one of these microphones would work on the K3. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Microphone Choices
Mark, The K3 microphone pinout is Kenwood compatible - but that does not mean it is exactly equal. Pins 5 and 6 are differnet between the two. If the Kenwood microphones under consideration do not have any connections to either pins 5 or 6 at the microphone plug, then it is quite likely to work fine. If the microphone you intend to use has a connection to pin 5 or pin 6, then you will have to resolve the source of voltage for the microphone. Kenwood puts +8V on pin 5 where Elecraft puts +8V on pin 6. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/28/2010 9:50 PM, pastor...@verizon.net wrote: Hi Guys, I am looking at purchasing a new K3 but am unsure of what would be a good microphone to use. Mark, my research revealed that the K3's mic jack is almost compatible with Kenwood mics, at least it's compatible with my Heil adapter I had for a TS-850S (only four pins needed). Per the '850 and K3 manuals, pins 5 and 6 are swapped on the K3 with 8V being present on pin 6 instead of pin 5 as with the '850S.
