Re: [Elecraft] K3 displayed power out is incorrect
Hi Gary; Look in from with the top off at the RF board where the KAT3 or KANT3 board plugs in. Check T4 for darkening, it gets cooked if DC is applied to the antenna connector (like a remote preamp power connected backwards or similar). You mentioned a remote tuner? Does it get power up the coax? T4 is our# E690126, FT37-61x2,18T #26,PREWND Also we went to beefier D36 somewhere in the early serial # range. Suggest shotgun replacing them if you don't find anything burnt. They are on the bottom just opposite the KAT3/KANT3. Our part # E560048 BAS70 Diode, 70V, SOT23 Infineon BAS 70 E6327 Digi-Key BAS70INTR-ND You mentioned arcing, if in the K3, it is most likely the SA1 spark arrestor on the KAT3 or KANT3 board. With the top off, watch for it glowing when running higher power. Our # E980130 SURGE ARSTR,350VDC,800V PULSE Digikey 495-1879-ND When you get it fixed, you will want to run the TX gain cal again, and after that, remember to never transmit at exactly 1.0MW, 5.0 or 50watts! It will cause an inadvertent manual TX gain cal that can mess up the gain cal. Re: [Elecraft] K3 displayed power out is incorrect
Hi Gary, The K3 computes forward and reflected power from samples taken in the SWR bridge circuit. A Tif X Gain calibration could fail because the forward power reading is incorrect due to a failure in that portion of the SWR bridge circuit. Do you have the KAT3 ATU in your K3? If so, be sure that you select BYPASS using the ATU TUNE button on the front panel. The K3 Utility will do this automatically on each band if you run a TX Gain Calibration via the Utility. Unfortunately, with the exception of two 51 ohm bridge termination resistors on the top side of the RF board, the remaining bridge components are on the underside of that board. You can access them by removing the rear bottom cover, but DO NOT key the transmitter while the cover is off because it will kill the driver transistors in the Low Power Amp assembly. I would check diodes D36 and D37 on the RF board first, which form the RF detectors for the forward and reverse power metering circuits, respectively. Those diodes are DC forward biased and should show a forward voltage drop of perhaps 0.3-0.4 V when sitting idle (transmitter NOT keyed). If those diodes are OK, then it gets more tricky to troubleshoot the SWR bridge without access to the bottom side of the RF board (DO put the rear bottom cover back in place before any further testing proceeds!). This is where Keith, WE6R, the K3/K4 super-tech at Elecraft, should be consulted about other possible failures in the SWR bridge circuit. There may be vias accessible on the top side of the RF board that would enable you to measure the VFWD and VREFL voltages from U16 (op amp unity gain buffers), but I don't know that level of detail without opening up my K3 for careful inspection. 73, Mike, K8CN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] K3 displayed power out is incorrect
During operation with a home-brew mag-loop antenna, my K3 (#1222) dropped power to just under 50W (by the display). There had been an occasional arc in the external loop tuner, so I'm assuming that was the cause of the K3 failure. Subsequently, running the 50W TX Gain Calibration, some bands pass but other do not. Pass-or-fail, however, power out on the dummy load shows more than 100W but K3's displayed power is on the order of 50W (definitely not right). Note that 5W TX Gain Calibration appears to work fine. During normal keying from a straight key, output power (seen on dummy load) ramps up quickly with KPA in operation and I get 100W out (on dummy load) when K3 display shows 40W. Because I'm getting full power on the dummy load, I'm thinking this must be something simple like a blown resistor in the metering path or gain-control circuitry. I get no error messages during operation and only get the TX Gain Failure message during calibration. I'd like to try a repair myself and would appreciate any counsel or direction. Re: [Elecraft] K3 no power out
Josep, After the basic checks that Dave and Fred have suggested, if you've not seen any life I'd quickly check what happens if you turn the power down to under 10W, this will bypass the KPA3 and if you still see no output then the problem is deeper into the radio. From here I'd talk to the folks over on the Elecraft K3 support email address, they will be able to advise how to pull the radio apart and make the necessary measurements. Working back through the power amplifier chain the next likely culprit is the 10W amplifier, then the Local oscillator. I went through something similar where my K3 intermittently refused to transmit, typically when I'd taken it to a contest. That one took me a little longer to fix (faulty LO cable) than I'd care to admit, but your's isn't intermittent by the sounds, so is a little easier to diagnose and hopefully fix. 73 Matthew VK5ZM On Thu, 9 Feb 2023 at 01:19, Josep Torres via Elecraft < elecraft@mailman.qth.net> wrote: > Hi all, > > Bad news here…. Re: [Elecraft] K3 no power out
A couple days ago I encountered that kind of issue: I had the K3 in DATA mode "looking at the psk-31 mode" and went to shift back to USB, but the XMIT/TUNE button yielded no output. Checked thru the list you provided and checked that I was in ANT1 output as I have run xvtr mode in the past. No output into my KXPA100/KXAT100; no input to re-tune the ATU...huh? Manually keying PTT switched the KXPA100 into tx. So finally, I recycle the power button on the K3 and it resumed normal operation (TUNE worked; SSB worked, ta-da). I have noted that changing bands with the K3/KXPA100 combo the ATU doesn't always recognize the freq shift (until I recycle power on the KXPA100). I'm guessing that's because there is no control line from the K3 to the amp like what is used with the KX3 (which is really nice when mobile and amp is under the back seat). Anyway sometimes recycling power works! 73, Ed - KL7UW Josep, Please check the obvious things: 1) Is 'test mode' on? 2) Is the power level turned to zero? 3) Is the VOX on (for CW)? 4) Are you using the right antenna selection? 5) Is your key plugged in/wiring OK? Re: [Elecraft] K3 no power out
Right on Dave, except that "simple" is a better term than "obvious." My K3 is S/N 642 ... very long in the tooth now. Perhaps 8 or 9 years ago 30 m quit. Just internal noise and infinite SWR. All the other bands were fine. After about 2 days of fooling with the myriad of connectors and cables behind the rigs [remember, it's called "wireless"], I posted a minor plea here. A fellow with the call N6KR called [yes, THAT N6KR] and began helping me trouble shoot. He said, "Let's start with the simple things ... which antenna is selected on the bands where it works?" I told him ANT1. "OK," he said, "Now, which antenna is selected on 30 m?" Everyone should be able to fill in the blanks from that point. Elecraft radios remember a great number of settings, some globally, some on a mode and/or band basis. W6RMK, my Elmer from 70 years ago told me, "When something fails, we nearly always believe it's caused by the worst possible thing that can happen. It almost never is." 73, Fred ["Skip"] K6DGW Sparks NV DM09dn Washoe County Dave New, N8SBE wrote on 2/9/2023 11:58 AM: Josep, Please check the obvious things: 1) Is 'test mode' on? 2) Is the power level turned to zero? 3) Is the VOX on (for CW)? 4) Are you using the right antenna selection? 5) Is your key plugged in/wiring OK? "No power to tune anything." Does this mean you've only tried to tune, and haven't tried actually transmitting cw or phone? If so, and I don't know how it would have changed, have you checked the Menu-Config-TUN PWR to see what it is set to? [Elecraft] K3 No power out
I have enjoyed the wisdom of this group and have learned so much but now it is my time to ask for help. My K3 is showing no power out. I have the K line. The relay clicks when going from 11 to 12 watts. I can set the power up to 110, but when I hit tune I get zere watts shown and verified by my watt meters. Makes no difference of mode, band, dummy load, resonant ant, or multiband hex beam, 80 meter horizontal loop, or 40 meter vertical. There is no output to tune anything. My last contacts showed no problems. Worked 10 meter cw, 20 and 6 meter ssb ok just two days ago. It seems to be receiving fine. The P3 display is normal, the KAT 500 and KPA 500 change bands with the K3 as they normally do. I have rebooted the K3 several times and have killed the master AC power to everything only to bring it up to the same thing. The ALC, compression, mic gain all register correct, where I always run them. I have checked to make sure the Test button has not been ingaged. Press XMIT and all I get is 0 W. [Elecraft] K3 6M power out
Is it normal for the 6M output to be about 10 watts less than indicated (i.e. 90w for 100w setting). If I do the 50w wattmeter cal on 20 M all bands but 6 are pretty much right on. Conversely if I cal on 6 then all the lower bands are (not surprisingly) 10 watts high. Mark. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] No Power out, no sigs in
I had similar trouble related to the synthesizer boards on a K3. On the newer KSYN3A boards there is a green LED on the top edge of the board that should be ON if the board is working ok. You mentioned a sub RX so you should have two of these boards mounted against the back of the front panel. In any case, if the main KSYN3 board dies, everything acts as you've described. If the sub RX KSYN3 board dies, only the sub RX is affected. So there is a chance you could swap the KSYN3 boards and bring the main K3 back to life at the expense of no sub RX. Just a thought - bit of a pain to swap those boards. [Elecraft] K3: Option: power out per ANT1/ANT2 ?
Hi OMs, let me ask if anybody will consider folowing as useful Option (option - used when needed :-)): - in K3 with KAT3 ATU unit (it means with 2 ant outputs ANT1/ANT2) to have possibility of different output power set by ANT port. Simply in menu CONFIG: PWR SET new option PER-ANT Why? If I have two antennas and one PA used for one of them (main ant) I need let say 35W for driving PA on ANT1 port and full power (100W) on ANT2 directly connected to second antenna (NVIS dipole for example) - without PA. Then it is possible simply switch ANT 1/2 without need to take care about power on output (not to overdive PA for ant1 / use maximal power from barefoot K3 for ant2) Yes, setting can be more complex as NORM/PER-BAND and NORM/PER-ANT together can be in the game but in some scenario it can helps (one band contest with two antennas and one PA, etc.) Is it silly idea or any supporters here? Opinions? Of course - no idea if this can be done in FW :-( 73! [Elecraft] K3 No power out after idle time
This symptom makes me think of edge connector problems I have heard about. But in my case there are no low voltage errors that seems to be the case in other reports. If I cycle the radio off and back on everything is good. I think this is the third time this has happened, all in the last month. The only commonality is that the radio has been on and idle for an hour or two. When I return to operate, the problem occurs. I don't think it happens in every case. Any other K3 owners seen this? Re: [Elecraft] K3 No power out after idle time
Hi Jack, I have had this exact problem. Turned out to be the connector between the front panel and main pcb. Treatment with Deoxit has cured it. BTW - I also had some other weird, seemingly unrelated, problems that would occur randomly. The Deoxit treatment cured all of those as well. [Elecraft] K3 - No Power Out
I was working stations on and off today. Came back into the shack this evening and tried to work a VK on 15m and I had no output power. I turned the power dial and it was at 0 watts, no problem just turn it up. Normally I would progress a 1/10 of a watt at a time up to 12 watts then it would increase at 1 watt intervals. This time it started at 0 and incremented at 1 watt intervals immediately, strange. After setting the output to 100 watts and then depressing the transmit button for a second it would transmit at 0 watts as displayed in the vfo b and vfo A would display --. I've disconnected the external devices to the acc connection (microham mkII in this case along with a KAT500) as well as the rs-232 connection to be sure an outside source was not controlling the rig. I have the KPA3 installed and the rig has been back to Elecraft to have the gold pins installed. Any ideas? It was not downstream of the KREF3 There have been problems caused by intermittent contacts on some early series of the TCXO modules, which are a less than firm fit in the turned-pin socket. Also the nylon cable tie supplied during this period was too stiff and did not pull both ends of the module down firmly onto the socket. I had this problem twice. First time around, I bent the pins on the module slightly out of line and pushed it back into the socket, and that seemed to cure the problem. I also replaced the single cable tie by two very slim ties, inserted under the socket from opposite directions so that both ends of the module could be pulled down firmly. That worked for several months but then the problem came back, so the second time around I thickened the pins of the TCXO module with a little solder to make them a much firmer fit, and of course replaced the two cable ties. Two years later (maybe three) it now seems fine. 73 from Ian GM3SEK 73 from Ian GM3SEK __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Bob, when you are in TUNE, what is PWR set to? You can check by turning that knob; just make sure the LED under PWR is lit, not the one under CMP... The setting is independently adjustable from the power setting while in transmit. Power is set at about 50W and I get that in USB. Any thoughts on what I am missing here? Re: [Elecraft] K3 no power out on DATA
Mike, That sounds to me as though you have the input set for MIC rather than line in, or something similar. First I would suggest using Line In and use DATA mode (AFSK A submode), select Line In in the MIC SEL menu. Set the K3 into TX TEST (or set the power down and operate into a dummy load) - set MMTTY into transmit, then -- Adjust the line out and Wave sliders on your soundcard to about 2/3 of full scale. Then adjust the MIC Gain (now actually Line In) to illuminate 4 bars on the ALC meter with the 5th bar flashing - ignore the conventional wisdom given for data mode setup (no alc indication) - the K3 is different, the - the 1st 4 bars of the ALC meter do not indicate ALC at all, they are there to help you adjust the audio level. The 5th bar indicates the onset of ALC 73, Don W3FPR On 9/4/2012 4:31 PM, Mike Sanders wrote: Well, Only days old here the new K3 is still challenging me. Lots of fun without doubt. Re: [Elecraft] K3 no power out on DATA
Mike , What I am wondering now is how line in adj helped you, as when when I suggested that you look at line in level earlier, you said you are using FP front mike for input? Adrian ... vk4tux Adrian, Thanks for the input. I got the Beta firmware, downloaded set up and running so am good for the moment. Just cannot get the output up on RTTY Data. I am using a front mount mic selection but my mike goes to a rigblaster duo it does all this house keeping. The radio keys up and goes into transmit. My set up for the Kwood mike works in the rigblaster on all the other modes Digital etc. So I have audio into the mic input from my computer through the rigblaster on the other modes to the K3. Leave it to me to disable something obsure. Thanks again es 73 for now. [Elecraft] k3 and power out on wattmeter
Here I am using the K3 with the KPA500 and P3. Everything works great. But I have notice that when I am using the 2.7 filter and cw, and the power set on the K3 is 80 watts, the watt meter on the Kpa shows 60 watts. If use the 500hz filter (on the K3) the kpa watt meter shows 80 watts. Also notice that if I have the cw pitch set above 400hz the correct watts show on the watt meter. But if I set the pitch to about 350 where Ilike it, it shows a drop in power output on the meter. (60 w) Did the ref cal with wwv and calibrated the watt meter through the menu. Can anyone tell me why this is happaning? Don...w2xb P.S. does the same using external wattmeter (W2) -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/k3-and-power-out-on-wattmeter-tp6761520p6761520.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 - No power out on 6M
I haven't used my K3 in a couple of weeks, but the thought of working some Au tonight got me going. I turned on the radio, connected the antenna and I could only get 5 or 6 watts out with the PA and 0.1 watts under the 12W setting. The power didn't vary at all with the power control, except when the PA clicked in or out. Very little current being drawn. Power out is normal on all other bands. I did a quick check of the archives and didn't see anything, but I might have missed something. Does any of this ring a bell with anyone? __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
RE: [Elecraft] K3 max power out 63W?
I was using the internal wattmeter in the K3. I don't have an external wattmeter. I hooked the radio up to an oscilloscope today and the power maxes out between the 60 and 70 watt setting. The scope is an old Tektronix 422 and the absolute measurements probably aren't that accurate, but the relative measurements should be valid. Here's what I get: Setting Output 10 9 20 16 30 23 40 31 50 46 60 67 70 77 80 77 90 77 10077 11077 12077 The measurements are subject to interpolation of a fuzzy line on a small, old crt on an old 15MHz scope, so I'm not as concerned about the actual numbers as I am the fact that they level off after about 65 watts indicated on the power setting. The measurements were take on the 160m band into a dummy load with the ATU bypassed and an indicated SWR of 1.1-1. I'm thinking that one of the finals in the KPA3 has failed.
