In the rental that I had for 20 years in a Chicago residential neighborhood, in the Chicago home I owned for 20 years, and now here in CA in the woods, I've gotten to know my drivers within a few months. We've developed a relationship, they know what to do with anything they have for me, and I know how to hail them to give them a package for shipment. My wife and I get an average of two UPS deliveries a week, without any problems. Bottom line --get to know your UPS person and everything will go smoothly. BTW -- if you want lousy service and careless deliveries without a signative, try DHL. In my busy Chicago neighborhood, they repeatedly threw valuable packages across my fence, only a few feet from the sidewalk, where anyone could have picked them up. I never used them, but some el cheapo computer vendors who I bought stuff from did. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Shipped But Requires Signature!!!
It all depends on the driver. Fortunately, I have a good one for UPS, and he knows me well. He has to drive over 0.7 miles of unpaved road and then up my 1/4 mile driveway to get to the house, and he has never failed me. He knows how to put any parcels in a safe place if I am not here. Yes, I have signed a waiver of signature. The USPS delivery person is very good too. The FedEx drivers here are unpredictable, and always seem to arrive when I am away, so I get notes on the door from them. DHL (when they were delivering here) was just awful - leaving parcels at the wrong address, or just putting them somewhere on the driveway. So if you ship anything to me, use UPS or USPS for best results. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/13/2010 2:54 PM, ab2tc wrote: > People's experience with UPS is obviously all over the place. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Shipped But Requires Signature!!!
Please also note that for every bad experience with UPS there are an equivalent number of bad experiences with FEDEX, DHL and many, many, many more horror stories with the Post Office - especially if you add international shipping to the mix. All of them involve people and people make mistakes. As one who ships thousands of packages a year with UPS, I can report that the problems are with much less than one tenth of one percent of the total. UPS handles millions of packages and there are bound to be some small percentage where things go wrong. For those who end up as one of that very small percentage, that does not help. But, the reality is that such problems are very, very rare. Don't take my comments as defending UPS - their weak point is not being able to respond adequately when things do go wrong - it's just that it is indeed rare when they do. I tell my UPS rep that they either get an "A" or an "F" when things go wrong. There's no middle ground with them. 73, Bob W5OV > Noted. I dont blame Elecraft, however. People's experience with UPS is obviously all over the place. My own experience with UPS is excellent. When a signature is required, they will make three attempts (three days in a row) to deliver it. Noted. I dont blame Elecraft, however. Elecraft is just using a "cheap" method of sending because, well, because this is what we asked for... Let me tell you my latest UPS story... I ordered a XG2 and two KSYN Shields from Elecraft and had them sent UPS Ground. Both my wife and I work, so we were not home when UPS came to the door. I wondered where the package was, so I looked it up on the UPS website. It said it was "Delivered to a Woman". Said so right there on the website! But I never got the package! I checked with all my neighbors, they didnt get the package either! I emailed Elecraft. They got right on it and sent me my order via USPS (Thanks! Handled just as I would have handled it!). Next day, I had a Orange tag on my door asking me to URGENTLY contact UPS at an *ORLANDO* address (I live in Tampa, 100 miles away). But there was no phone number, only a street address! I looked the phone number up on the web and called. The VRU on the phone number had no option for me to ask about my package shipment error, and hung up on me! So I called it back and lied to it. I then got a human who took my number and said "some one in Tampa will contact you within the hour". Several hours later, a nice young voice did contact me to tell me that the package was delivered "to a woman" at my address. I reminded her that I had no package and that there was no woman at my address at that time. She then said "Are you sure? Have you asked everybody at that address?" I reminded her that it was a single family home, that my wife is the only female at that address and that neither she nor I had been home to get the package. She again asked me "are you sure?" So I said "Do you have a delivery signature?" She told me "No, the shipper did not require one, but from now on, we will not deliver packages to your address without a signature, no matter how small". I gave up in desperation, told her that Elecraft had already mailed me a replacement order and if they find the package, they should just send it back to Elecraft. That evening, a UPS agent came to my door. They had me sign a non delivery form, which they did not offer to give me a copy of. Then they told me that they would get back to me after their investigation of the package's wherabouts. One work week later, Im still waiting for them to get back to me. Use USPS or FedEx next time, as I will. After this and the utter destruction of a video server securely packaged in a ATA certified SKB shipping crate that I shipped UPS ground the week before for my company, and I have had a bad month dealing with UPS. -lu-W4LT- Message: 1 Date: Wed, 13 Oct 2010 07:01:52 -0500 From: "Bob Naumann" Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 Shipped But Requires Signature!!! I live on a private road out in the country. The mailboxes are about a mile away from my house, near where the private road starts. The UPS guy insists on leaving packages sitting on top of the mailboxes so he doesn't have to drive the extra distance on the private road. Apparently he was documenting the packages as being delivered to my doorstep. That is a clear violation of UPS policy. However it took me half a dozen phone calls over a period of weeks, ending up with his supervisor's supervisor, to get him to stop doing that. I notice he is still doing it with my neighbors. I've had a lot of problems with UPS over the years. Al N1AL On Wed, 2010-10-13 at 08:07 -0400, George & Jan wrote: > The delivery notice that UPS left had several options for you. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Shipped But Requires Signature!!! [END of Thread]
Let's end this thread for now. As a general note, we insure K3 shipments due to their high value. UPS, and most other shippers, do not allow us to waive the signature requirement on insured packages. Individual drivers may have agreements with recipients that are different than this, be we can't control that from here. Best bet for large value shipments is to ship them to your work address if you do not have someone at home to receive them. That's what I do when I buy high value items for my personal use. The original poster on this thread called us and we were able to reroute the package to his work address. 73, Eric WA6HHQ > -- > > > I can't believe that Elecraft is sending my K3 requiring a signature! > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 Shipped But Requires Signature!!!
Hi Mark (and group), If you think signing for a package is a hassle, just try filing a claim for lost one. I had a package (containing one xtal filter) taken off my porch about 15 years ago. Didn't realize that it was missing till I contacted the vendor asking about the long delivery. Even though the value was just under $100, the claim became a prolonged battle among vendor, UPS and me. It took about 5 months till the vendor was finally paid by UPS. Only then would they ship a second filter. All this time the vendor had my money; I had paid by check. Since then, I've had valuable packages sent to my office. If your employer won't allow personal deliveries, a business near your home (one where your have a regular relationship) might accept and sign for your packages. My neighborhood animal hospital does this for several customers. The irony of my lost filter? I found it about 9 months later while doing some landscape work. Someone (kids?) had stuffed the package into a Yew bush about 20 feet from my front door. The bush was dense, the package small and it would have stayed there forever if I hadn't done major trimming. 73, Blair K3YD -Original Message- Date: Tue, 12 Oct 2010 19:59:50 -0500 (CDT) rom: pastor...@verizon.net can't believe that Elecraft is sending my K3 requiring a signature! [Elecraft] K3 Shipped But Requires Signature!!!
Mark, That was my situation for receiving UPS/FedEx when I was a bachelor and at work. My solution was for delivery to made to my workplace. I let others at work know I was expecting a personal shipment to arrive so they would sign for it if I were out. Also, I developed a good relationship with my UPS driver over the years where I had many UPS deliveries for work. I had to inform him not to drop anything at my old workplace after they laid me off. In my case, the driver has the same delivery area to my home. I would not be too comfortable with a very expensive shipment being dropped off at my door without someone home (signature or not). Signature ensures for Elecraft that the intended individual receives the shipment and is proof of delivery in case of any dispute with the buyer (just good business practice). This protects UPS from bogus insurance claims, too. I sell some things overseas on e-bay and always insist on signature. In some countries mail theft is a big issue. And I suppose it may be in some areas of the USA. I was home the day my K3 (4043) was delivered. It as Christmas that day (My wife informed me that was my next ten years Christmas present). 73, Ed - KL7UW -- Message: 18 Date: Tue, 12 Oct 2010 19:59:50 -0500 (CDT) From: pastor...@verizon.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Shipped But Requires Signature!!! That doesn't work in my area- UPS ignores such notes. I recently went through the same problem and was able to get the package redirected. Elecraft told me they insure the package and by doing so they are bound by a UPS policy that requires a signiture on the recipient's end. Elecraft does offer other shipping options but they can cost a little extra. I suppose it's just another cost of doing business these days. The delivery notice that UPS left had several options for you. Just call them and they will work with you to make delivery. Usually they will try again the next day - you can also leave a signed note for them with your instructions. I leave in the country with the nearest UPS center about 60 miles away over the mountains. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Shipped But Requires Signature!!!
One person already suggested putting a signed note on our door. Another approach I've used is to contact UPS now, before it arrives, and tell them it's coming and you want it left without signature. They have a form you need to sign (driver will leave it in advance) and with that you can receive that and any other packages sent to you without signature. You can also tell them where to leave the box if your front porch is exposed, such as somewhere in the yard or on a back porch (assuming you don't have dogs in the yard) or some other out-of-sight location. Another option is to have it left at a neighbor's house if you have a friend home in the daytime. They are set up to do that and get the signature there. And then there's always your place of work if that's possible for you. Years ago I received lots of stuff while working at Hewlett-Packard and receiving would call me in the internal phone to tell me they had a package. [Elecraft] K3 Shipped But Requires Signature!!!
I just leave a note for UPS and they leave my packages. Geo/W2BPI Tue, 12 Oct 2010 18:50:56 -0700 pastormg2 wrote: > > > I can't believe that Elecraft is sending my K3 requiring a signature! I agree with your frustration. There seem to be two solutions (aside from the long long drive to a UPS center): (a) insist that that shipping company not require a signature (seldom works, probably because shippers themselves are too careless to follow through), and (b) leave a signed, dated note in a prominent place for the UPS driver to either leave the package without a signature or leave it off at a neighbor's house (this seems to work in my rural area but may not in the inner city). If a package of mine disappeared into the maw of a distribution center (in my case, about a 60 mile round trip away), I believe I would stop payment on the credit card purchase for non-delivery. This is a bit like cutting off one's nose to spite one's face, but it might just generate enough attention so that the occasion would not recur. One or two of the other local carriers are using my local Post Office as a drop-off center. In my case, this is only a 15 mile drive away. One of my other pet annoyances about UPS is that the driver will occasionally leave a (smallish) note on my garage door. Since I raise the door with a remote from the outer end of the driveway, the chances are almost nil that I will see this note...it simply disappears into the garage's overhead space, and when I put the door down, it is on the outside when I am on the inside, a typical catch-22. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Shipped But Requires Signature!!!
Mark, I know, many ship to me with "signature required", and the UPS (or FedEx) man delivers a bit after lunchtime. So if we go out to lunch, I will not be here when the parcel arrives, and it is a pain. I live at the end of a 1/4 mile driveway at the end of a "subdivision" with a private road 0.7 mile long, where there are only 8 lots in the subdivision. If a parcel is left on my front door stoop, it will be safe from weather as well as others who might "happen by" and see an insured parcel sitting there - no-one just "happens by" at my house, and if they are not expected, may just be greeted with a shotgun. However, I am an exception - both the regular mail carrier and the UPS normal driver know where to put parcels that arrive when I am not home. We do have neighbors who we can trust who check on the situation when we are gone. My situation is NOT the norm where people may not be at home when the delivery attempt is made, and the parcel can sit exposed on a porch for all passers-by to see. For those, high value shipments should require signature confirmation. If you are in an area where a high value parcel can be left on your doorstep for 24 hours with no problem, then when you order, tell the sales person to uncheck the "signature required" item, and I am certain it will be honored. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/12/2010 8:59 PM, pastor...@verizon.net wrote: > I can't believe that Elecraft is sending my K3 requiring a signature! I have had many packages shipped to me from Elecraft. I live so far out in the boonies the UPS folks need help finding me. Elecraft has NEVER sent anything requiring a signature to my rural abode. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Shipped But Requires Signature!!!
Not many companies are going to ship a 2K$ item without a signature.. If it gets lost, UPS or Fedex doesn't like to pay.. I don't think Elecraft is any different than any other company in this respect You will learn to appreciate the company and their services-products..
