[Elecraft] K3 UTILITY QUESTION

2024-01-11 Thread Tony Cuttone
Greg,

In CONFIG, make sure that RS232 is set to USB, and that you’re using the USB
port on the KIO3B as the proper connection. It’s easy to overlook that change,
and the rig won’t talk to the computer without it.

[Elecraft] K3 utility

2023-02-10 Thread Dean L
It's been a long time since I used the utility, and seem to be having a
brain cramp. I'm unable to figure out how to download my current settings.
I have done it before on another computer that died, and can't seem to do
it with the new setup. I see where I can upload current firmware, etc but
not backup or change things like the welcome screen etc.

Almost thing my utility might be corrupt?

It is communicating with the K3, which has db9 serial.
Thanks in advance 73

Steve: After you read the macros from the K3, do you click "save" to
preserve these values in the registry?

Right now the dialog can be cancelled (by clicking the X at the top, or
"cancel", or can be exited "normally" by pressing Save.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I was on an extended trip.

I recently upgraded my ham radio computer, which required re-installation of
the K3 Utility. Previously, my macros appeared to be saved to the computer,
as they would appear in "edit macros" in the "command tester".
With this new install, the macros no longer show when starting the utility,
although they can be uploaded from the K3. But each time I run the utility I
have to reupload them from the K3. Does the utility no longer save the
macros to the PC disk, as described in the help? Is my utility working
properly?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility vs macOS Monterey?

2022-01-15 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
Does the USB port show up when you go to 'About This Mac' and then to 'System
Report' and then to 'Hardware:USB' ?
Assuming you are using a quality USB cable (from either Elecraft or Sabrent)
that uses the FTDI chip set, and not someother cable that uses a Prolific chip
set. (I have several USB devices on my Mac, and I keep careful track of which
iswhich by tracking their serial numbers as denoted by the /dev filenames in
addition to what 'About This Mac' displays,as I've run into problems in the
past, particularly when using Windows under Parallels, given how picky Windows
isabout device ports and ordering).
Does the port show up under another program, such as WSJT-X or JTDX? Were
either of those programs (or othersthat may be trying to use the particular USB
port) still running when you invoked the K3 Utility? I don't control my K3using
RUMlog (which I do use for logging), but it does have some rig control
capabilities, for example. I'm not familiarwith the other Mac logging programs
out there, so I can't comment on what effect they might have in your situation.

On the website, go to Support/Firmware Pick the K-Line on the list,
and then K3S. Scroll down.

It’s used for firmware upgrades, configuration save/restore and several other

[Elecraft] K3 Utility "Killed" K3, Can't Force Reload?

2020-11-19 Thread Rick Tavan
After a computer configuration change, I needed to figure out which COM
port my K3 was coming up on. I ran K3 Utility and started trying COM ports.
After several "Port Closed" responses, I tried another and the rig began
sending *AA* and other stuff repeatedly. I couldn't stop it with the XMIT
button, so I hit POWER to turn off the radio. Now, when I touch POWER the
LCD lights up plain yellow as long as I hold POWER but as soon as I let go,
the screen goes blank. I tried to begin the Forced Reload protocol by
disconnecting power for 10 seconds, reconnecting, and HOLDing POWER for >10
seconds but, after at least 20 seconds, the MCU LD message still hadn't
appeared. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

/Rick N6XI

I loaded the D2XX drivers. They do work with the KPA500 Utility.

[Elecraft] K3 Utility Testers needed

We're about ready to release an update to the Windows version of the K3

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility vs. RemoteRig?

2019-12-19 Thread Hisashi T Fujinaka

Sounds like outdated design to me. The K4 should have more internal
horsepower so remotely sending firmware will be easier.

Also not a fan of unpublished APIs.

product to transfer firmware or undocumented commands.
If you must do this remotely, then you should have a PC at the remote site
and then connect via something like TeamViwer.

TypeDevice Manager in your search
window. When it opens look for "Ports"

write down your existing port numbers.

Pull your USB.

The number that leaves is your necessary
port number.

re-attach the USB and now in the utility,
go to that port number with the proper
baud (38K, 36K, something like that) and
you should reconnect

Make sure your Registry is clean and no fragments from installs and
uninstalls exists.    I use a product called CCleaner, Pro version,  to
get rid of junk files and also clean the Registry. That's two different
functions.   There is a free version available.    You might be
surprised at the crap and junk that's hanging around inside the
computer, file wise.

The "SAVE" button in the K3 Utility Macro Editor writes directly to the

I was seeking.

[Elecraft] K3 Utility

2018-03-08 Thread Harlan Sherriff via Elecraft
Does the utility save any info in Windows registry?

I opened the utility to check for firmware. As soon as I opened it, I received
the “K3 waiting for firmware load.” message.

I was unable to get anywhere using info from the help file, so connected the K3
to another computer and all was FB.

I tried the original computer with the K3 disconnected but got the same error
message.

I have tried everything I can think of to correct the problem with the first
computer: rebooted the computer, uninstalled the utility and reinstalled the
latest utility rev, changed the port the K3 connects to.

My thought is that the utility must save some setting in the Win registry that
doesn’t get cleaned out when uninstalling the utility.

I can keep my K3 up to date using the second computer, but sure would be nice
to be able to use the normal computer.

Any ideas?

[Elecraft] K3 utility to monitor extended display of characters sent from K3S keyer problem

2018-03-02 Thread Tom Norris
I'm beginning my learning curve with my new K3S Kit (after a trip to
Elecraft for them to correct the 400hz filter I put in backwards! Otherwise
it was a good, fun build). I'm wanting to practice CW sending and I am able
to see my K3S paddle input characters in the K3S VFO B. But I am not able
to receive the K3S paddle entered characters in the K3 Utility display. I
can enter and transmit characters via the keyboard in the K3 utility, see
them in the K3 Utility window and the K3S VFO B. I've tried the various
K3S Text Decode settings but was no help. I'm sure it's a setting
someplace, I've tried to search the archives but the posts I've found do
not address that part of the problem.
Thanks, Tom NB5Q

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility Not Connecting (Virtual Windows Environmentmay be a factor)

2017-01-03 Thread Larry Gauthier (K8UT)

Rick,

My limited experience with Elecraft's utilities is that they only work when
direct connected to serial ports that can tolerate the baudrate
guesstimation process that occurs immediately upon the utility's launch. The
K3UTIL jumps between 4800, 9600, 19200, and 38400 baud trying to establish a
connection.

I suspect this could be resolved for non-conventional serial connections
(virtual serial ports, remote connections... ) if K3UTIL.EXE could employ an
optional command line argument to disable baudrate bingo and force a fixed
baud rate . "K3UTIL.EXE /9600"

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Utility Not Connecting (Virtual Windows
Environmentmay be a factor)

Looking for a sounding board here to jump-start my brain. I run Windows 7
under VMware Fusion on a Macbook Pro. Although it's a difficult environment
to maintain, most Windows software works well. I run RemoteRig boxes to
connect a local K3 acting as a control head to a remote K3. The RemoteRig
box presents the remote K3's serial port as a local port (COM12 today) and
both Writelog and N1MM+ can connect to it and control the remote radio.
Right now, however, K3 Utility and K3 Memory Editor are not connecting to
it. (Yes, I terminated the loggers before trying the Elecraft apps.) I'm
pretty sure this configuration used to work, so I'm baffled. Usually it's
the other way around - a COM port has changed and I use K3 Utility to
discover which new port number to specify in the logger. But today the
logger connects and Utility doesn't.

If I eliminate the RemoteRig boxes and associated K3 Remote firmware, both
K3 Utility and the logger connect to the local K3 just fine from the
virtual Windows OS. I'm running FW Rev 5.55 on both K3's.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

/Rick N6XI

I have a Surface Pro 3, and a Surface Pro 4, no problems with drivers here
either. I did have some driver issues with the SP3 under Ubuntu Linux, but
I just reformatted it to give to my wife. Next step is to figure out how to
get Linux working on the SP4. But, that's not your problem...!!!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility with Windows 10

2016-12-18 Thread Barry

Rick,
The K3 utility wants a com port to connect to, and that com port
needs to be the same as the one for the radio. If you are using a USB
adapter, it declares itself as a com port. Go into device manager and
see which com port your adapter "thinks" it is, and make a note of it.
Use that com port in the utility to connect to the K3, and make sure you
have the data rate and data bits spec'd correctly. Once the utility gets
correct information, it should work perfectly.

2016-12-18 Thread tomb18
HiNo, it is not 64 vs 32 bit.First thing to do is open up the device manager
and looking at the comport entry. Then  unplug the USB to serial device. One of
the comport should disappear. Then plug it in.That will help determine if the
port you are using is correct.Start with that. If you do not see the port

I downloaded the latest K3 utility onto my Surface Pro 4 with Windows 10.  My
K3 is serial 2869, with RS232 to USB adapter cable.  I downloaded the driver
indicated on the Elecraft site.  Problem: I cannot, for the life of me, get the
radio to connect to the computer.  Could this be a 32 bit versus 64 bit
compatibility issue?  Any ideas or suggestions?  By the way, the KX3 utility
works fine on this computer.  I’m baffled and ready to kick the cat.

Rick,

All Windows 10 versions are not created equal. If you have a Win10 full
size computer, try it on that. I have not had any problem with Win10 on
either my laptop or my desktop computers.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility for Mac

2016-08-26 Thread Robert Brock
There are two aspects in the terminal mode pertaining to CW that need
adjustment. There is no auto scrolling for typed text to be transmitted in
the bottom panel and the separation bar between received and transmitted
text is frozen and can't be moved. I don't use the received text per se but
wold like to be able to set more rom for transmitted text. Both of these
were corrected in the Windiows version but not the Mac version.

I contacted Howard and he said these were on the list, but that was more
than six months ago.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility questions

2016-04-01 Thread a45wg
Gary,
I also had a look around for control software - but could find nothing
I really liked (There re some great programs out there) - but either too
complex or not focused on what I want. So….

Write your own ! I know it sounds daunting - but the K3 has an
excellent programming document - and the K3 Utility gives you a test bed to try
out your commands (I would suggest a degree of caution) - once you have that
done - it is simply a matter of an interface - which can be as complex or as
simple as you want.

Assuming you do not want to write your own - but wish to use multiple programs
at the same time - then….

Depending upon the port connection mechanism you are using - will
depend if the port is available for other devices to use. Most software opens a
device similar to a file - i.e. in exclusive mode. Thus blocking other programs
from using that port.

However - there are options….

Mac: the Mac seems quite happy with the /dev/CU-x to allow multiple ports
Windows: I think on Windows you could look for a virtual port driver - and gain
access to the “real” port using virtual ports. I did this years ago for sharing
GPS Receivers amongst programs.
Linux: you should use a Daemon (a Central process that listens to many clients
who wish to talk to the Device). The Linux mechanism is far superior (Opps
maybe I am a little biased, for it could be implemented as a service in Windows
also - its just almost no Windows programmer ever does this) - but it does add
another layer of complexity to the whole control process.

The Daemon/detached process mechanism is best/easiest used using ricgtld
(Linux) - I do see people using it for Windows also - but I have no experience
on that.

Regards

Tim

[Elecraft] K3 Utility questions

2016-04-01 Thread Gary Smith
I'm starting to explore other options with
different software and my K3s. My main
interest is in being able to send CW, RTTY
and it would be a nice plus to send from
the voice memories when calling in a
pileup and not have to keep hitting the
function button every time I put out my
call.

Seeing as I have the K3 Utility already
working, I have found the terminal seems
to work well for the immediate needs on
CW. I do though have to run it separately
from my logging program because the only
port that is available is #8 and that is
dedicated to the K3 and the logging
program takes ownership of it. Once I make
a contact I have to shut off the utility
and load the program to get it logged.
Then if I want to use the terminal I have
to do it all over again.

I tried to use OmniRig to run the
K3/logging program and the Elecraft
Utility but see no way to share the
utility with it.

- Is there another software to use the
terminal with the K3 at the same time?
Maybe another method? Right now I'm trying
not to add more hardware.

- Also, I tried to use the memories in the
Utilities terminal for RTTY but could not
get RTTY to work. I'm sure I missed
something I need to change in the
configuration but if so, I don't know what
it is.

Suggestions?

Thanks & 73,

Gary

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 Utility problem

2015-12-07 Thread Jim Sheldon
First, I just tried this (never used it before) and have the same
problem here under Windows 7 Professional 32 bit on an HP 6300 running
an Intel Core i5 quad core processor, 16 gig of ram. It came loaded
with the 32 bit version of Win7 Pro and I made the mistake of loading
all my programs on it. Now I can't switch to the 64 bit version of Win
7 or upgrade to the 64 bit Windows 10 without losing all the loaded
programs and having to reload everything.

You have already informed Elecraft of this problem by posting here. The
person who writes the code for the Utility monitors this list though you
could also call Elecraft Tech Support (see their website for the phone#)
and let them know as well.

The above results also happen with my ASUS laptop with all the same

Is anyone else having the same trouble? Can anyone else recommend how I

The K3s did a great job for me when I played in the 160 meter contest this week
end. I was impressed at how well the receiver worked under bad local conditions.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 Utility problem

2015-12-07 Thread Jack Brindle
Dick is an early riser - even more amazing since it is still dark where he
lives, and will be for a bit longer.

He already has a new version in limited testing this morning, literally minutes
after the problem was reported.
If all goes well, it will see wide testing followed by release within a few
days.

Not to toot our own horn, but outstanding job, sir!

2015-12-07 Thread Walter Underwood
That was an excellent bug report, which usually makes fixing it much easier. It
was a reproducible case, describing the actions and what was seen, without
making guesses about what might be wrong. Reports that good are surprisingly
rare.

[Elecraft] K3 Utility Save Configeration freezes

2015-09-12 Thread Bob McGraw - K4TAX

I've found that all RS-232 to USB cables / converters are not created equal.
Some work. Some do not. However those containing the FTDI chipset do work.

I purchased mine from R T Systems. 100% succes on every application and
computer I've tried.

I found that my computer has a serial connector so I ordered a serial cable.
The serial cable saves the configuration in a few seconds. I will use the
serial cable and not use the serial to USB since it does not work. I really
like this K3 Utility and find it very useful.
Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility Save Configeration freezes

2015-09-12 Thread G4GNX - Alan

Most of the issues with the Prolific cable/converters is with a flood of
fakes and Prolific's policy of changing the drivers to reject them. They can
be made to work using an older driver and disabling Windows Update for that
driver.

I have both, but I do prefer the FTDI.

I've just ordered a multi-port serial converter, so we'll see how that works
out.

FWIW config save on my Win7/64 box with 38400 bit/sec between it and the

You might want to look at your computer.
It sounds to me like K3Utility has no problem gathering the
configuration information, but your computer is having trouble saving
the data to the file.

K3 Utility revision 1.15.8.18 has been placed on our web site, see
http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm

The new version has several timing adjustments (for K3 and K3S) and commands
to react to new K3S capability.

It is particularly important for K3S owners to upgrade to this new Utility
revision before attempting RF Gain Calibration.

Dear UK K3 owners,

This email is a request for some help in troubleshooting my recently
acquired K3. It is an early model Ser No 104 and has been hardly used. I
suspect I am suffering from front panel to RF board pin corrosion problems
since K3 utility fails to connect and comes up with the error 'connected
device does not appear to be an Elecraft K3' - this with both Mac OSX and
Win 7. Despite this I get perfect comms with MacLogger DX running on Mac
OSX.

I would be most grateful if there is anyone in the area near Daventry or
Rugby who could spare a little time to plug their computer in to my K3 and
demonstrate wether it is me or the K3 who is crazy!!

If your shack is as disgusting as mine, (and are equally embarrassed by it)
we could always meet at the Rugby Amateur Transmitting Society, my local
club.

[Elecraft] K3-Utility feature request

2014-12-01 Thread Lothar Sack
I used the K3-utility in parallel to my contest-program. Its terminal
is really helpful to read the decoded rtty and cw
while it already disappeared out of the display of the K3. My K3 often
decodes rtty better than my contest-program.
For possible post-contest comparing I want to store the whole decoded
text of one contest. That is helpful, especially in rtty.
Instead of CTRL-A and CTRL-C ... it would be nice to have a button in
the utility-program to store all text at once.

Additional Question:
Is there a limit for the amount of decoded text in the utility, because
my utility hang up after a couple of hours.

Is there a chance to get this and are others interested too?

[Elecraft] (K3) Utility Interface Problem

2014-06-20 Thread Tom Laszynski

I need help! I cannot get my computer to communicate with my K3. A
week ago, I had no trouble doing this. Now, when I attempted to use
the transceiver using either the K3 Utility, revision 1.13,5.9, or
TRX-Manager (a CAT program), there is no handshaking. At one time,
both of these programs worked separately with the K3.

My computer is a Dell Vostro 320 using Windows 7, Professional,
SP1. The interconnect is a straight thru RS-232 cable, DB-9.

Using the utility, under firmware, I continually see attempting to
contract K3 on Port COM1 at bit/s.

Suspecting the cable, I replaced it with another cable and the
interface problem continued. Based upon this test, I assume that the
original cable was good and now have it back in-line.

Using the good cable I tried a second XP based computer with
1.13.5.9. The problem continued!

To double check, I've ran Dell's diagnostics on the computers (OS Win
XP, SP3 and Win 7 Pro, SP1). Both machines pass the serial port tests!

I ensured the both the K3 and computers were setup with the same COM
port, 8N1 and Speeds. In this case, 38,400 bit/s.

Based upon the above, I suspect that the problem is in my K3. Most
likely, I have unknowingly changed the configuration parameter
affecting communications.

Can someone point me in right direction to solve my interface
problem? I'm stumped!

Re: [Elecraft] (K3) Utility Interface Problem

2014-06-20 Thread Nr4c
Tom.

I suspect one of two possibilities. Check ALL RS-232 settings, both on computer
and radio. You seem ok w/computer end, chk CONFIG:RS232 for radio settings.
Mine says 38,400 b.

But you may have an issue with the serial interface chip in the K3. This is not
a common occur acne but it has happened to 3 of about 12 owners I know locally.
There are simple voltage checks you can do to determine if this is the problem
but I'll suggest you contact Dave or Howard at Elecraft Support to direct you
thru this. If this is the cause they will prob send you a new KIO3 bd and you
return old one after the swap. Easy to do.

Good luck.

Re: [Elecraft] (K3) Utility Interface Problem

2014-06-20 Thread Tom Laszynski

Hi All,

After over a week of trying various fixes, Bill, NR4C, may have found
the solution to my communications interface problem! I had total
forgotten about a severe Thunder storm we has less than a weeks
ago! Never thought to couple my problem with nearby lightning strikes!

Bill wisely e-mailed me saying ... you may have an issue with the
serial interface chip in the K3. This is not a common occurrence but
it has happened to 3 of about 12 owners I know locally. Bill, BTW,
lives in Williamsburg Va area. I guess they have thunderstorm like
we have in Oklahoma!

After speaking with Elecraft, I am sending my K3 in for a check-up
and to be upgraded while it is there! At my age installing a new
surface mounted chip is out of the question!

Thanks to all who responded to my call for help!

[Elecraft] K3 Utility Terminal Program

The terminal tab provides a nice CW keyboard, except that I'm not able to
maintain it in Transmit mode without keeping the buffer populated. Does
anyone know of a way to do that? It would surely make normal QSOs less of a
