[Elecraft] TX Gain Calibration

2022-04-21 Thread w1ie
Good morning,

I have just done a TX Gain Cal on my K3 and 160m came up short (4 watts).

1. Is this something I can fix or does it need to go to the Mother
ship?
2. If it is not corrected, what are the ramifications of not having it
done?
3. If it can be fixed by me, what is involved?

Best regards,

Jerry, W1IE

Re: [Elecraft] TX Gain calibration fails

2021-12-30 Thread William Hammond via Elecraft
Hi Joachim , How are you adjusting the power in each of the three power
settings. Do you have the coax and dummy load connected directly to the K3?
Trade out the short jumper to the dummy load to assure yourself it is good.
After that, I would measure power with an external calibrated wattmeter. The
K3 utility is obviously not seeing the power it is looking for, low by .5 to 12
watts depending on the power setting.

Re: [Elecraft] TX Gain Calibration Fails on 6 meters

2021-02-27 Thread David J. Schmocker
Hello, K3S. S/N 11532 K3 Utility running on Mac OS 10.14.6 Mojave

I found that running Transmitter Gain utility requires these settings within
K3S Config menu to enable test to pass (with good 50 Ohm load on both ANT1
and XVTR-Out ports):

Transmitter Gain tests:
5W test. requires Config - XVTR - OFF
50W test requires Config - XVTR - OFF
mW test requires Config - XVTR - ON.

I suppose this makes sense (turn the transporter on for the mW test which is
used to drive the Transverter).

Re: [Elecraft] TX Gain Calibration Fails on 6 meters

2019-03-13 Thread Jack Brindle via Elecraft
How are you doing the calibration - manual or computer? If computer, PC or Mac?
Make sure you have the latest K3 Utility to do this. Recent versions of the K3
Utility had an issue with handling responses from the K3/K3S that caused
calibration to fail. I believe they were fixed on the Windows version, but I
don’t think that has been taken care of on the Mac yet.
I will have to check to make sure.

Repeating the process is worth while. My own experience is that it will
eventually complete.

Re: [Elecraft] TX Gain Calibration Fails on 6 meters

2019-03-13 Thread Bob McGraw K4TAX

My K3S s/n 10163 I find my results are the same as yours as below.

"On 6 meters the relay switches from LP to HP amplifier when the power is adjusted
from 8 to 9W."

"On 160-10 meters I hear the relay switch from LP to HP amplifier when the power
adjustment is increased from 12 to 13W as described."

Also noted with TUNE power set to 20 watts, all bands 160M - 10M operate
normally at 20 watts displayed and measured. However on 6M when TUNE is
activated the displayed power is 16 watts and the measured power is 16
watts. When PWR is set to 20 watts, the measured output is 16 watts.
However, If I set the PWR to 100 watts the measured power is 100 watts.
On 6M if I set TUNE Pwr to 25 watts, when Tune is activated it displays
21 watts and output is 21 watts. Clearly there seems to be an issue in
firmware for 6M only. I recall sending the concern to Elecraft. At the
same time, I don't consider it to be a major issue. 73 Bob, K4TAX

I purchased Elecraft K3S S/N 11672 in August 2018. The build was completed in
November 2018. At that time all the tests and calibrations were completed
successfully.

Now the TX Gain Calibration fails on Low Power and High Power on 50 MHz. only.

Page 67 of Elecraft K3S owners manual TXGN Description states LP 0-12W and
HP 13-120W.

On 160-10 meters I hear the relay switch from LP to HP amplifier when the power
adjustment is increased from 12 to 13W as described.

On 6 meters the relay switches from LP to HP amplifier when the power is
adjusted from 8 to 9W.

The error message states “TX Calibration failed because Transmit Power did not
reach the expected value.”

The TX calibration is performed per the instructions into a proper 50 ohm dummy
load.

I submitted this to Elecraft Support last week but have not received a
response, so I thought I would ask the group for ideas.

Thanks in advance.

[Elecraft] TX GAIN CAL Problem Fixed...(maybe)?.....

2016-04-27 Thread W5RDW
After noticing my Acom 1500 not producing full output on some bands (Acom
tested good), I went off and started what I thought to be a short TX Gain
Cal (which I had never done) to the factory assembled rig. This rig has
functioned perfectly since I received it from the factory on 4/19/2011.

I am not going into the myriads of runs on the cal procedure in the latest
utility (1.15.12.7) and firmware, as I was very frustrated. I was successful
in the 5W cal up to the 60M band where I hit a dead end. I looked thru the
dozens of posts and tried all that had something to do with tweaking the
computer inputs. No luck. Then, I noticed a few type of mechanical type
problems, most I would not try in opening up the rig. I'm too old for that
and my ham radio tweaking inside a radio are long behind me (8 years retired
and full time caregiver for my wife).

While running a sweep of another TX Gain Cal, when the run was inside the
60M band trying to find 5W (it was good at finding 3.4W or so), I lifted the
rig at the front and let it drop an inch, out of frustration than anything
else! *Lo and behold*, the run slowed, showed 5W and proceeded on to a
successful 5W cal. I nervously selected the 50W process and yes, you know
the answer, it worked like a champ.

Going to bed now (almost 10PM now). I guess there is a loose pwb, component
or cable inside? Maybe someone can give a guess at what might be wrong. If
it is easy to get at, I could go in and start to tighten screws first,
re-seat cables, etc.?

BTW, the rig has never been dropped, etc. always sitting there waiting for
the next DX station!

I really have no idea what this means, and I can't find any info on it anywhere.

[Elecraft] TX Gain Calibration Error?

2010-09-20 Thread Jeff Cochrane - VK4BOF
Hi everyone,

I am attempting to do a TX Gain Calibration and every time that I have
attempted it so far, I get the following response from the K3 Utility.

Starting 5 watt calibration

Calibrating at 1.900 MHz

Calibration power settled at 13.5 V ;

Elapsed time: 12 seconds

Tx Gain calibration failed because transmit power did not reach the expected
value

5 watt calibration failed

I get the same error if I bypass the 5 watt test and go straight to the 50Watt
test.
I have tried it with the radio running on a battery and with a regulated power
supply.
I am using the latest version of the K3 utility.

Any idea's?

Re: [Elecraft] TX Gain Calibration Error?

2010-09-20 Thread Jeff Cochrane - VK4BOF

Problem Solved!
I had to do a hard reset of the K3. (Power on whilst holding the NORMAL
button) and then reloaded my saved configuration.
I was then able to go through the whole TX Gain calibration procedure.
Ain't it marvelous what you can do when you read a book! :)

2010-09-20 Thread Dick Dievendorff
I've not seen this, but your VFO B area is probably showing power supply
voltage when a power level is expected.

Can you save your configuration with the K3 Utility, then perform parameter
initialization (EE INIT) then restore configuration? EE INIT is described in
the K3 Owners manual.

Thanks Dick,
Thats exactly what I did do, EE INIT followed by restoring my configuration.
All seems to be fine now.

No you're just able to have the dummy load on either port when you do
so.

[Elecraft] TX Gain Calib state 157 error and no audio issues

2010-06-01 Thread K9IR

I just finished building my K3 to the point of the test and calibration
stage, where I encountered some issues. SYN calibration went fine, and the
filters are set up. When I got to REF CAL, I found I couldn't use WWV
because I wasn't hearing anything. I reseated the KIO3 board as well as the
2 daughter boards and managed to get a crackle from the speaker at power up
and power down but still no audio.

I used a freq counter for REF CAL but when I got to TX Gain Calib, I
received the following error message using the latest version of the K3
utility:

Starting 5 watt calibration
Calibrating at 1.900 MHz
IsSamplingComplete: Unexpected response DS@@\x80\x80; to DS; State
157
Calibration power settled at  0.0 W ;
5 watt calibration failed
Elapsed time: 6 seconds

I tried manual calibration on different bands but that failed also.

I haven't seen any references on the reflector to an ERR TXG mentioning a
State 157. I did recheck my filter settings and they seem correct. I've
emailed k3support but thought I'd check here in case someone has seen this
version of the ERR TXG issue.

Does the fact that I could connect my laptop successfully to the K3 and use
the utility indicate that the audio issue is probably with the audio
daughter board and not the main KIO3 board?

Thank you for any ideas on how to resolve either issue.

Re: [Elecraft] TX Gain Calib state 157 error and no audio issues

2010-06-01 Thread Dick Dievendorff
If manual TX Gain calibration is failing, then the automated K3 Utility
version of Tx Gain calibration can't succeed either.

The state 157 is just an internal variable in the K3 Utility, it's not a
K3 state and doesn't mean much to anyone except me...

The K3 Utility set the power level to 5.00 watts and then did the equivalent
of pressing tune. The utility wants to see an SWR 2.0:1 and 5.0 watts
in the VFO A and B areas of the display. Your K3 isn't transmitting,
according to the display. I would wait until you can calibrate at least one
frequency manually before trying to use the automated K3 Utility
calibration.

K3support is the right place for this.

[Elecraft] TX gain ?

2008-08-07 Thread williamsonr
Anyone seen this issue:

When adjusting 50 watt TX GN (gain) on each band, some bands do not allow
entire adjustment range to obtain 50 watts? i.e. while adjusting VFO A for
exactly 50 watts the VFO B display may move in the following steps: 46, 47, 52,
57 watts and skip over - for example - 48, 49, 50, 51, 53 etc. This results in
some band calibrations being above 50 watts and some being below due to the
unavailability of all the power settings? This seems odd.
