[Elecraft] P3: Is ther a way to move macros from one P3 to another P3?

2021-11-24 Thread Dave

Hi,

I have 50 macros programmed into one P3, and want to move them to a
different P3.

Does anyone know of a way to move the macros programmed into one P3, to
a different P3, not by simply retyping them into the new P3?

Check the BNC cable between the K3 IF Out and the P3.  At the P3 end,

That sounds like either, there is no RS232 connection cable between the

Check the P3 manual for radio configuration and RS232 port speed etc.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 freezes

2021-06-07 Thread Bill Frantz
I travel with my computer and connect it to my K3 (upgraded)
every time I go on the air. The last time I started operating, I
noticed that my P3 did not know the frequency the K3 was using.
I then noticed that I hadn't plugged the USB connection between
the K3 and the computer into the computer. I plugged it in and
everything worked again.

I think this may have been because the K3 needs to be polled in
order to send the frequency data. (There is a menu option to
automatically send the frequency data. I am away from the radio
so I can't check how it is set on my K3.) Hooking the radio to
my computer let the logging program provide the polling.

The K3s are fed with short, fat copper from a 100Ah LiFePO4 battery;
everything else runs from a 100Ah SLA battery. That SLA's load includes
antenna switching, P3/SVGAs, three video monitors, two LP100A power

Batteries are float charged using re-purposed Thinkpad power supplies

Do you know just what failed on the I/O board?  Was it possibly due
to static discharge?

I tend to leave an antenna connected, except during active weather,
but curious if there is something sensitive in the P3 I/O area that
can fail easily from a surge, like the old RS-232 circuitry in the
original K3.

2021-04-12 Thread Dave Cole

Hi Dave New,

It does help, and thank you... Mine has come back to life as well,
(power cycling it), and I am worried about turning it off now as well...

I will get an RSA from Elecraft and send it in... I'll report back to
the list what they find, and how long it took to get repaired.

If you discover the issue, please let me know if you would! I won't be
sending mine back tomorrow, but sooner than later. Also, THANK YOU
again for the information.

I've been leaving the K3s/P3 powered on continuously, but recently
started turning them off, to save some 'always on' energy while trying
to figure out why our house is running about 1200 watts continuously.

So, when powering on the combination (the P3 is set to power on with the
K3s power), very nearly always now, the internal display fails to come
on, but the SVGA display always works.  Normally, cycling the power
switch on the P3 recovers the internal display, but just yesterday, I
had to cycle the power several times before it came up.

I'm now leaving things powered on, until I can troubleshoot what the
issue is.  I did go as far as looking in the P3 manual to see if there
is a coin cell battery in it, that might need replacing, but that is
apparently not so.

I'm concerned about the loss of settings, which may point to a corrupted
EEPROM.  Reflashing the P3 hasn't fixed this, and so far, I've not tried
a 'factory reset' on the P3, which would lose all my settings.

Hope that helps,

-- Dave, N8SBE

Rick,
A further thought on this...  Next time your P3 fails, can you try and
grab an image from it using the utility?  I just thought of that, mine
will not grab an image, when it is failed, so it is probably not the
backlight on mine.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Failure, and question

2021-04-12 Thread Dave New
I've been experiencing intermittent failures of the internal
display, as well as loss of at least one setting (Track/Fix).

I've been leaving the K3s/P3 powered on continuously, but recently
started turning them off, to save some 'always on' energy while trying
to figure out why our house is running about 1200 watts continuously.

So, when powering on the combination (the P3 is set to power on with
the K3s power), very nearly always now, the internal display fails to
come on, but the SVGA display always works.  Normally, cycling the
power switch on the P3 recovers the internal display, but just
yesterday, I had to cycle the power several times before it came up.

I'm now leaving things powered on, until I can troubleshoot what the
issue is.  I did go as far as looking in the P3 manual to see if there
is a coin cell battery in it, that might need replacing, but that is
apparently not so.

I'm concerned about the loss of settings, which may point to a
corrupted EEPROM.  Reflashing the P3 hasn't fixed this, and so far,
I've not tried a 'factory reset' on the P3, which would lose all my
settings.

Hope that helps,

Rick,
A further thought on this...  Next time your P3 fails, can you try
and grab an image from it using the utility?  I just thought of
that, mine will not grab an image, when it is failed, so it is
probably not the backlight on mine.

If the frequency display at the top center of the P3 screen is reading
zero, then that implies there is something wrong with the RS-232
connection between the K3 and the P3.  Recheck the connections on page 5
of the P3 manual:

https://ftp.elecraft.com/P3/Manuals%20Downloads/E740152%20P3%20Owner's%20man%20Rev%20H1.pdf

The two-headed cable should plug into the two RS-232 connectors on the
P3 in the order shown.  Make sure all the connectors are well-seated.

[Elecraft] P3 not displaying correctly

2021-03-20 Thread NJMike
Let me first say that I am new to using a panadapterHowever, it has
worked fine since I got it a month ago. But now it doesn't seem to reflect
what I am hearing on the K3S (which I got at the same time).

I am listening to an S9+ CW signal on 80m but do not see the signal on the
P3. I believe that I have seen signals a lot weaker than this one in the
last month...

Also, I do not see any of the normal noise along the bottom of the spectrum
display on any band, except 10m. I find this weird because, on 15m the
noise level is higher but there is no noise displayed on the P3. But when I
switch to 10m, which is noticeable quieter, I can see the noise across the
bottom.

I have made no changes to wiring or connections.

Thanks,
Mike NJ2OM

Hi Alan,

Cool undocumented feature!  Guessed that FN5="MENU".  How do I get back
to normal ... other than powering down?  I generally do not send P3

have need to see what my program is sending to the K3, or getting back

Re: [Elecraft] P3 span changing

2021-02-09 Thread w4sc
I have observed very similar occurrences. For example changing bands, if the
center frequency was previously tuned to 10.000.00 MHz with a span of 20KHz,
then changing to another band, say 20M or 40M, then back to 30M (10MHz), the
center frequency will briefly appear in the upper left corner of the P3
display, as well as in the center of the display. It then corrects, with the
proper LH-CENTER-RH ( 9.990.00 – 10.000.00 – 10.010.00 ) displayed.
Occasionally the display will show ( 10.000.00 – 10.000.00 – 10.010.00 ) and
not correct the display. Also the FILTER BAND PASS will appear on the left side
of the display, remaining there. All of the communication to the P3 in this
case is from the K3S. I have no computer or other device connected to the
K3S/P3. Initiating a “CENTER” command via the P3 “BUTTON” will usually correct
the issue……

Re: [Elecraft] P3 span changing

2021-02-08 Thread Alan Bloom
If you return to a band but at a different K3 VFO frequency, the new
frequency may be outside the P3's span.  If that happens, the P3 will
re-tune using an algorithm determined by the MENU > FixMode setting.

If you want to be sure the P3 frequency doesn't change you can set
FixMode to "Static".  Then the P3 frequency range will not change even
if the K3 VFO frequency is out of range.

It may be that some logging programs do not retain the old frequency
upon a band change.  Even if the frequency is "wrong" only for an
instant, that would be enough to confuse the P3 if not in "Static" mode.

It would be interesting to see what N1MM and other logging programs are
sending to the P3/K3 on band changes.  There is a little-known serial
debug monitor in the P3 that shows the traffic on the two RS-232 ports.
You activate the function by simultaneously holding the DISPLAY/AVERAGE
and FN1/FN5 buttons.  The P3 screen changes to show RS-232 traffic
color-coded to show on which port and in which direction the traffic is
going.

The data can fly by awfully fast when using a logging program.  You can

Don't understand your "follow option" question.  I run mine in Fixed Tune Mode
which holds the span [i.e. edge frequencies] constant and the two VFO's show up as two
vertical cursors in the spectrum display.  The cursors move as I tune, and when I go
beyond the edge, the span shifts by the amount I've set in the menu ... I use a full
span.  In the Tracking Mode, your receive frequency is always centered and the spectrum
moves past it as you tune.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 span changing

2021-02-08 Thread Jim McDonald
I use the Fixed Tune Mode too but the center frequency sometimes isn't
remembered when returning to a previously-used band. If it makes any
difference, I'm usually using N1MM+ (often with Win4K3Suite) to control the
radio.

Don't understand your "follow option" question.  I run mine in Fixed Tune Mode
which holds the span [i.e. edge frequencies] constant and the two VFO's show up
as two vertical cursors in the spectrum display.  The cursors move as I tune,
and when I go beyond the edge, the span shifts by the amount I've set in the
menu ... I use a full span.  In the Tracking Mode, your receive frequency is
always centered and the spectrum moves past it as you tune.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Issue

2021-01-11 Thread gt-i

You could first check if you get stable connection using the
PX3-utility. If that does not work, it could be an unstable power supply
issue (0,5A ~12V required).

Otherwise I suppose there is a loose connection inside of the P3. You
could check the cable from the main board to the display. The manual has
a section about replacing the display with useful pictures (fig 25&26).

P3 stopped working. When turned on, the entire screen flashes from red to
green to blue to blank to grey to checkerboard to grey and then cycles
through those screens again, etc. I have done a reinitialization by holding
down the Label key while turning on the power. Nothing changes.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Panadapter Cable Connections

2021-01-04 Thread Ken K6MR
Do not use a Y cable. I could go into the whole technical description, but
don’t.

I’m assuming here a normal non-USB K3. What you should do is connect the P3
normally to the K3 through the XCVR port on the P3, and then connect the
Microham device to the PC port on the P3.

Subject: [Elecraft] P3 Panadapter Cable Connections

Gentlemen:

I recently purchased a P3 and connected it to my K3. The installation shares
the RS232 connection with a Microham USB interface III for digital operation.
I used a Y cable to connect both of these units simultaneously.

I find I cannot run both at the same time. If I do, the P3 does not display
the frequency at the top of the screen, and does not display the band-pass of
the VFO A. Each unit will run separately with full function.

Has anyone else experienced this interaction? Were you able to adjust the
connection to allow full function of both units? How did you do it?

*NO!!!* The microHAM USB III is, in part, a USB to Serial converter.
It provides the CAT connection to the transceiver and should be treated
as a computer serial port. The RS232 connection should *NEVER* be
attached to a "listen only" port on a "Y" cable.

[Elecraft] P3/K3 for sale

2020-11-29 Thread Bernie Capron
I am selling my Elecraft K3 Factory built 160 - 6 meter Rig, P3 Panadaptor
and Signalink USB.

The K3 has the 100 watt amp, KAT3A-F internal antenna tuner, upgraded
K3SYN3-F upgraded, KDVR3-F Digital Voice Recorder, 5 Filters: KFL3A - 6K
6KHZ, KFL3A - 2.8 KHZ, KFL3A - 2.1 KHZ, KFL3C - 400HZ, KFL3C - 250HZ.
Factory installed KDVR3 Digital Voice Recorder, KBPF3A-F General Coverage
Receiver.

The Elecraft P3 - F factory built pan-adaptor has the SVGA video card.

Radio and Pan adapter are in excellent shape and all the cables for the P3
and Signalink are included (except the USB, those are generic). Original
manuals are also included.

I would consider selling the P3 separately if there is interest, but I
would only sell the radio and P3 together, let me know if that is your
interest.

Asking $2900 shipped via Paypal, check (must clear first) or cash. I am
willing to meet someone within a few hours of the Saratoga-Lake George
region of NY.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 question

2020-11-23 Thread George Danner
Thaire,
Seems that you are not getting the K3 IF output into the P3.
1st - Make sure the BNC cable is on the 2nd from top not the top connector
on the P3(Don't ask how I know).
2nd - BNC connectors can sometimes be fussy. I had an intermittent on the
output of the K3. I used a pick and "tightened" the female by bending the
center female. This was several years ago after moving into a new house
with a new Ham Shack.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Transmit Display Failure

2020-11-20 Thread w1ie
Carl, Chuck and Alan,,

Carl, your suggestions are good and logical ones for attempting to fix the
PTT_KEY parameter problem , but in this case, this was a problem that was
designed to be so by
Elecraft. Here is Elecraft's solution to my problem:

" From your description of the issue, it sounds like you have USB.SAFE enabled
for PTT-KEY. This is a feature to prevent accidental transmissions when a
computer toggles DTR and RTS lines during a reboot. When USB.SAFE is enabled,
it will keep PTT-KEY set to OFF-OFF until the radio receives valid serial
commands over the serial connection. It can be confusing, since the setting
will show as OFF-OFF until it receives those commands. You can toggle USB.SAFE
off and on by tapping 1 on the keypad while viewing the PTT-KEY menu."

This was from Rob in support.

Chuck and Alan, as long as you don't tap the #1 key on the keypad while looking
at the PTT-KEY parameter, this will not happen to you. Interestingly enough,
the display will show UNSAFE and SAFE when in this condition and tapping the #!
Will toggle the condition. I also think you have to have the KIOB module
installed too. It sounds like it is USB specific and KIOA modules will not be
affected (Ithink).

Best regards

Jerry, W1IE

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Transmit Display Failure

2020-11-19 Thread Alan Bloom
My first thought is there might be an intermittent RS-232 connection
between the K3 and the P3.  That would prevent the P3 receiving the TX
and RX commands from the K3 so that the P3 gets hung up in TX or RX
mode.  If you can lay your hands on a spare RS-232 cable, I would try it
to see if that fixes the problem.

If the RS-232 connection is confirmed OK and the problem still occurs, then:

Have you tried cycling power without restoring the config file?  If it
really does require the config file restoration to restore proper
operation then it must be some setting that is accidentally getting
changed.  That can sometimes be caused by some computer software sending
commands to the P3 via RS-232.  Try running the K3/P3 with no RS-232
connection to the computer and see if you still see the problem.

If the problem occurs with no connection between the K3/P3 and the
computer and you can confirm that it does require a config restore to
get back to normal operation, then it sounds like the EEPROM in the P3
must be going bad.  I have never heard of that happening, but I guess
it's possible.

I'm thinking stray RF somehow causing this but never happened on SSB...and I

[Elecraft] P3 Display freeze - siloatr

2020-10-23 Thread gt-i

Hi everybody,

just to let you know:

while preparing my gear for WWDX I noticed that the P3 started to freeze
the display for about 1 second, than continues to work for 2-3 seconds,
then freezes, and so on. Very annoying to look at.

I disconnected all cables and traced it down to the
RS232-to-PC-Connection. The logging programm polls the K3 (looped thru
the P3) at 500mseconds, as all the time before.

I investigated further and realized I had an RS232-groundbreaker, a 10€
part, switched in between.

Removed it, now works again like before!

Another cheap part that lasted for less than 3 years goes into the trash
can.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 info

2020-10-08 Thread Bob Wilson, N6TV
I recommend checking the P3 Manual for the correct hookup. You can either
use the optional CBLP3Y cable (a separate purchase) or the RJ-45 to DE9-F
adapter cable that is supplied with every K3S. If using the latter, you
have to change CONFIG:RS232 to 38400 (not USB), and the USB cable can
only be used for the USB Audio CODEC, not rig control, and you use the same
serial cable you were using before, with the K3. Otherwise, you need to
use the CBL3P3Y to make everything work with one USB cable (CONFIG:RS232
USB).

I have just noticed that after replacing my K3 with a K3S my P3 no longer
shows the center frequency of VFO A (7.234, 14.234, etc,). I cannot find
any info in the manual or the Fred Katy book. Could I have miss-cabled or

I like the operation of the “Full Span” selection, but it seems after a band
change the center frequency of a 20 kHz span has changed. Instead of having

[Elecraft] [P3] P3 CENTER frequency

I think I recall seeing a solution to the P3's losing the center frequency
using fixed tune mode when changing bands. It's very frustrating to have to

Is there a fix?

[Elecraft] [P3] REF LVL changes - normal behavior?

2020-09-07 Thread Michael Gillen via Elecraft
Hey guys, I am seeing this behavior on my P3 and am wondering if this is how
it's supposed to work or or there is something wrong.

I set the REF LVL so I am just above the noise floor and then randomly a few
minutes later either the floor goes way down or way up. In other words, I
adjust the waterfall to show normal then randomly it will show nothing at all
except the strongest peaks as if I adjusted the REF LVL way up or it shows a
lot of noise as if I adjusted the REF LVL way down. So I have to keep an eye on
it and constantly adjust the REF LVL. Its been doing this for the past 6 months
or so it didn’t always do this.

The P3 is connected to my K3s which is having no problems. ATT is on, pre-amp
off, AGC is fast.

Cheers!

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Utility Help Please

2020-08-09 Thread Hank Garretson

No other programs are using the port.

Click "Test communications" on the Port tab to verify the P3 connection.

connected to a P3.

Windows 10.

P3 Utility Ref 1.16.3.15

Connects to my P3 just fine.

When I click on Configuration Tab, both Save and Restore options are grayed
out.

Help please. What am I doing wrong.
