Members tend to congregate 50 to 55 KHz above the bottom of the band. You can join (can't remember the price), and you get a number which you can exchange with other members for various forms of fame (no fortune, unfortunately). My number is 11151. FISTS members will usually match your speed so it's a fairly good way to get in some CW practice if you need it. Is this a joke? No. SOC is the joke. My SOC number is 633, although it doesn't seem to matter much except in the SOC marathon, where it also doesn't seem to matter. SOC does not do fame or fortune. Any more questions? SOC is the acronym for the Second Class Operators' Club, where competence is tolerated but not encouraged. www.qsl.net/soc/ You can join and receive many good things, such as a number that you can do many things with. Well, actually ... a number is all you get, and you can't do anything with it except send it to someone else who probably doesn't care and will miscopy it anyway. There are no dues. This is primarily because no one who wants to be a member has been found who can serve in the role of Treasurer ... or who can count well for that matter. SOC members tend to bust their own calls in contests -- at least those who can tell time and actually get IN the contest do. George, A#1: There is nothing wrong with 750 Hz if that suits your ears better. Most of us feel that is too high for comfort. In fact, that pitch was 'forced' on us by earlier transceivers that tried to use the same BFO crystal for both SSB and CW. Thankfully, the K2 and K1 give us a choice. Just be certain to do all your filter alignment around the higher pitch or you may find your more narrow filters unusable. Thanks for the info on FISTS. So, this prompts another question. Since 14.060 is the QRP frequency and (before I had my K2) while operating rockbound at 14.060 I heard many folks instead of calling CQ and signing QRP they were looking for other FISTS. Why do they use 14.060 instead of their published 14.058? I generally don't answer them if they are specifically calling for FISTS, but do they answer calls otherwise as well? I'm sure there are many QRP/FISTS members here as well that may be able to clear this up for me. Mark, I never call CQ FISTS unless it's a FISTS contest; and that may be what you heard. When there's a contest going on, everyone has to spread out a bit. Mosts FISTS will QSO with anyone, whether they're a FISTS member or not, Heck, it's a good recruitment tool! Unfortunately, I have heard of instances where fellow FISTS, hellbent on collecting FISTS numbers, have refused and have only hurriedly QSOd with a non-member. Fortunately, I can count the number of times I have heard this on the fingers of one hand.
