Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: K3 Microphone Choices

The same could be said be said about buying a loaded K3/P3 SVGA for $5500+
instead of an IC-718 for $700 both radios?

Myself I prefer a better quality of radio, mic and microHAM equipment over
Signalink. I hate to have a weak link in an otherwise good station and then
quality comes into the picture plastic vs. metal. That said I do have
several "plastic mic's in the shack 2 Elecraft/Heil headsets and 2 Elecraft
hand mic's K2/KX3.

Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten.

Five years ago I purchased a ATR-30 from J&R for $22.00 it came with a 16ft
XLR 3 pin cable when I A/B tested against my Gold Line Heil the only
difference was the price my advice is use the EQ save you money do not
purchase the Heil.

Good evening. I have a K3 and really love it. I am looking at purchasing a
new microphone pretty soon. I am currently using a Kenwood MC-60 and I get
excellent reports on my modulation. But I have been reading alot about the
Heil microphones and was wondering what Heil microphone would work good with
my system. I basically like to operate for DX though I do chat from time to
time on some nets. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

This is a case of apples vs. oranges. There is less difference among
microphones designed for voice work than there is among high end rigs.
Yes, there are places for specialized microphones - if one is working

from a distance (e.g., a "shotgun" mic), trying to mic a "kick" drum,
or trying to duplicate the complex overtone structure of classical
strings using a microphone designed for the job is essential.

However, communications is one of the least demanding applications
for a microphone and spending $200, $300 or even $400 is not going
to provide any more performance than the $50 utility mic. In this
area, one is paying for name and style not performance.

Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: K3 Microphone Choices

2013-03-14 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Given my experience with the Heil Pro-set with HC-4/HC-5 element vs.
the Yamaha CM-500, I'm not going to put Heil in the "quality" or
"support" camps.

If you want to compare Heil to a $5.00 "tape recorder" mic, you may
have a "quality" argument. However, there are enough solid, well made
professional microphones in the sub-$100 class that one does not need
to spend $300 or even $200 for the Heil name.

Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: K3 Microphone Choices

2013-03-14 Thread Keith Heimbold
The DX Store sells the PR781 Heil microphone for $139. Plan to add that to my
portfolio of microphones which include a Yamaha headset, two Heil headsets and
a mini portable Heil microphone. I have been using the Yamaha and Heil portable
microphone lately. Get good audio reports from both. Saw that the DX Store had
the PR781 and seems to be a good price.

There is nothing more complex in overtones than the Human Voice. Period.

I wonder why Electrovoice mic, both the EV 20 and the EV 27 are known
throughout the Broadcast Industry.

BTW, Amateur Radio and Commercial Broadcasting has one thing in common.
They are both reproducing the Human Voice through a known (irrespective of
bandwidth) medium.

Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: K3 Microphone Choices

2013-03-14 Thread Walter Underwood
Of course that matters for broadcast AM or FM, but ...

When you cut off the frequencies at 3 KHz, you cut off almost all those
overtones. If SSB is even a tiny bit mis-tuned, all the overtones are also out
of tune.

Cheap electret mics are quite good. Once you pay enough for decent build
quality, they are all the same for communications purposes. They have
limitations, but those just don't matter for communications (only 80 dB SNR,
uneven high frequency response, compression with high dynamic range).

2013-03-14 Thread David Gilbert

You, my friend, are the hypster's legal prey. There are many areas in
life where price and quality are practically unrelated, and those who
look for quality based primarily on price are either ignorant or too
lazy to do the research. Even the "plastic vs metal" criteria doesn't
hold up in the real world, and when dozens of people point out the
incongruity of spending $150 for a Heil mic that is no better (and
probably worse) than something that can be had for $50 or less, the wise
would pay attention. A $20 electret computer microphone will sound and
function every bit as a Heil when properly set up with the K3.

"The same could be said be said about buying a loaded K3/P3 SVGA for
$5500+ instead of an IC-718 for $700 both radios?"

Or maybe the same could be said about spending $12,500 for an IC-7800
instead of $5,500 for a loaded K3/P3. Oh wait ...

A $900 toilet seat is still just a toilet seat.
