Hey Art, Do you have a source of the Sennheiser phones for $30? Cheapest I can find is more than 50. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - 'High Isolation Headphones'
Yes, I've learned that there is a difference between headphones with foam type cushions vs. those with the gel-type cushions (and an NRR rating), such as the Dave Clark products. The sound of a door closing is a good indicator. I always come back to using my Dave Clark 10S-DC stereo headset, with NRR 23dB, because I operate in a very noisy part of the house and find that it offers the best isolation over a wide frequency range. I hear a lot of complaints about Dave Clark being uncomfortable to wear, some based on experience many years ago, but find the 10S-DC to be just fine myself - perhaps the cushion design has improved over time? Re: [Elecraft] K3 - 'High Isolation Headphones'
I'm an early advocate of the CM-500 (I bought mine in June of last year) but I don't think that they are quite as good for isolation as Hector does. In fact, what I notice is that certain noises come through "apparently" stronger, since most other noises are eliminated. One of those is the sound of a door closing. I often have to yank them off and go determine what's going on, since it sounds like it's been slammed. I'm often wondering whether the XYL is POed because I'm spending too much time on the radio :-) I also have an H10-30 David Clark headset and I can guarantee this doesn't happen with it. Not quite as comfortable tho... Re: [Elecraft] K3 - 'High Isolation Headphones'
For CW contests, I tried a pair of Direct Sound EX-29 "Extreme Isolation" headphones. They don't have a model with a boom mike. I find them very isolating, but over a few hours I'm sweating under them a bit more than I'm comfortable with. They're great as part of the headphone rotation. I find that sometimes I can change headphones and stay in the chair longer than if I just stay with one headset. I prefer isolation to phase-cancelling noise reduction. Without any real knowledge of the acoustic science, I have an opinion that noise cancellation is yet another distortion, and it all adds up. Phase cancellation can't be perfect. I use noise cancelling headphones on airplanes and enjoy them for that purpose. The EX-29 headphones aren't the bargain that the Yamaha CM-500 is. 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Bob Naumann Sent: Tuesday, March 02, 2010 7:29 PM To: 'Barry N1EU'; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 - 'High Isolation Headphones' I have to agree with this follow-up with the exception that I think that the CM-500 is actually much better than Heil Pro-Set for isolation. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - 'High Isolation Headphones'
I received a Clarity Aloft headset as a gift. I am very impressed with the quality of RX and TX sound and they are very comfortable to wear. The headset and boom comprise a continuous wire frame that gently but firmly grasps the head, while the "earbud" material and transducers are derived from hearing aids, which are obviously designed for long-wearing comfort. The earpieces provide excellent isolation from nearby sounds. The noise from my amplifier blowers -- directly to my left at the operating position -- used to drive me crazy, but no more. I have tried several times to get up and walk away from the radio with the headset on because I forgot I was wearing it. The RX and TX transducers are both of the "wide range" variety. The first TX audio reports I received said that the audio was very "bassy," so the ESSB "community" should *really* love them. The RX and TX equalizers on the K3 have become very valuable for tailoring the response to "communications" standards for both day-to-day and contest use. -- 73 -- Brian -- K1LI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - 'High Isolation Headphones'
I recently tried ear defenders used together with earbuds but I didn't like them, uncomfortable and too fiddly. Considered a Dave Clark headset, but too expensive and seemed to start a whole new thread about best headset...for Pilots! I ordered and have just received direct from USA the Extreme Isolation EX-29 headphones and have to say I'm very pleased with them. Excellent sensitivity, with the K3, good fidelity and completely blocks my Amplifier and PC fan noise. Great ! 73, Deni F5VJC K3 325 Bob - W0GI wrote: > Put some David Clarks on your head. Put some David Clarks on your head. You won't hear outside noise, but after a few hours of those things on your you head, you will wish you were dead. :>) Sorry, just a pilot joke.. -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-High-Isolation-Headphones-tp4530272p4532371.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 - 'High Isolation Headphones'
I have, in previous set-ups used Air-conditioning ducting to help a lot with blower noise by rerouting the air-flow (further) away from the operating position. This also allowed me to situate the amp in a location that would have been otherwise unsuitable due to poor airflow needless to say if anyone else wishes to try this, then please take good care to ensure that the airflow is still more than good enough to provide the required cooling and the duct for the exhaust air can handle the heat. I used an aluminium flexible duct for the exhaust On Sun, 2010-02-07 at 10:52 -0800, Bill W4ZV wrote: > Amplifier blower noise. > > 73, Bill -- 73 Brendan EI6IZ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
