Re: [Elecraft] K3 settings question

2024-10-08 Thread Chris
Hi Ian,

That was it. That fixed the low volume issue. It was set to 5, which is
very low.

Many thanks,

Chris,

Do you have Tech Mode turned on in your K3's menu? This enables menu
options that are otherwise hidden.

They both have AF GAIN at HI. I am going to update the firmware and will
see if it is related to AGC settings. I am still learning as these two K3's
are fairly new to me.

Thanks for your info.

K3 with 8xxx has firmware version of 5.29, and I don't see AGC settings
other than AGC DCY and AGC HLD. I assume I need to update the firmware to
the latest one.

As I recall, Ten Tec was known for setting their AGC threshold quite low. The
result was that owners always commented on how "quiet" their receivers were.
Turn off the AGC and then compare your volume settings.
 All a matter of taste.

It is interesting to see the AGC THR makes a noticeable difference, and I
will do the same as you suggested.

Another note is that the audio volume is much different between them. The
one with 09xx serial number is noticeably louder. When 09xx is set at the 9
o'clock position, 8xxx needs to be at 12 o'clock to have a comparable audio
volume. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 settings question

2024-10-08 Thread Chris
It is interesting to see the AGC THR makes a noticeable difference, and I
will do the same as you suggested.

Another note is that the audio volume is much different between them. The
one with 09xx serial number is noticeably louder. When 09xx is set at the 9
o'clock position, 8xxx needs to be at 12 o'clock to have a comparable audio
volume. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Settings for SignaLink USB

2020-04-06 Thread David Bondy
Many thanks to all of those who took the time and trouble to answer.

I took the SignaLink apart and re-seated the module. I also re-checked my ALC
setting and all the others on the rig.

I had come across a very useful document by Jason K8ZT and followed his
instructions to the letter. I also found the information by Don W3FPR
immensely useful in setting up my ALC etc.

All-in-all very helpful and I am now up and running on WSJT-X with no problems.
I shall setup my FLDIGI next …

Thanks again everyone and very 73, David G4NRT

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Settings for SignaLink USB

2020-04-04 Thread Don Wilhelm

David,

I think you should check the jumpers in the SignaLink. Also make
certain the level controls for the SL soundcard are set correctly in the
computer.
Or simply use another USB soundcard - the K33 has built-in isolation
transformers.

Set the K3 LIN OUT level to about 10.

You apparently have a problem, but it may not be in the K3. Plug
amplified computer speakers into the K3 LINE OUT jack as a test. You
should hear the sounds.

I am able to operate the rig (via a USB to RS232 cable for CAT) and transmit
JT8 signals (via the SignaLink) - I can see that I am getting out by monitoring
Hamspots! HOWEVER I am not able to get enough drive from the K3 via the

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Settings for SignaLink USB

2020-04-04 Thread Nr4c
I ask “why use a SignaLink with the K3?”

The K3 already has buffered Lin In and Line Out. Separate settings for in/out
for each mode.

The one item to pay attention to is transmit audio level. You should set the
power out by using the Per knob on the K3 front panel.

Then adjust the audio to show 4 solid bars and flashingbfifth bar on the ALC
meter.

Or that the other station is confusing ham radio with broadcasting. Some
hams want to hear full bass -- that's fine if signals are strong with no
QSB, but sucks power that can be better used for communication when
conditions aren't great between you and your QSO partner.

My recommended settings for most voices with the CM500 and other "flat"
mics is for maximum cut of the three lowest bands (50, 100, 200), 6 dB
cut of the 4th (400 Hz), the 7th band (2400 Hz) boosted 3 dB, and the
8th (3200 Hz) boosted 3-6 dB.

NO!  Numerical control settings are the WRONG way to set Mic Gain and
Compression. Rather, Mic Gain should be set for full power on voice
peaks with no compression. The "right" Mic Gain setting depends on how
loud you talk and how close the mic is to your mouth. An ideal position
for the mic is a few inches above and to the side of the mouth. This
minimizes breath pops and allows drinking coffee and munching, but is
also close enough to minimize room noise. Once that is "right," COMP
should be set for indicated 10dB of Compression on the LED display on
voice peaks.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 settings for Yamaha headset

> saying the audio is sharp and narrow .

"Sharp and narrow" generally means too much high frequency (1600 - 3200
HZ) audio and not enough mid range (400 - 800 HZ) audio.

With my CM-500 I use the following two sets of TX EQ:

 Normal operation "DX"/Contest Operation

   50 -16 -16
  100 -16 -16
  200 - 8 - 8
  4000 0
  8000 0
 1600 +3 +5
 2400 +5 +8
 3200 +6 +10

The "normal" EQ is very similar to a typical "communications" mic or
the old Heil HC5 (3 dB/octave HF "boost") while the "DX" EQ is very
similar to the Heil HC4 "DX" element (5 dB/octave HF "boost"). The
DX/Contest setting is a bit "sharp" and I would not use it every day

Re: [Elecraft] K3 settings for Yamaha headset

2018-10-24 Thread Nate Bargmann
I've gotten good reports with the following:

Mic Gain 25
compression 10

I set rear panel bias on for the electret element.

My TX EQ is

0.05 -9
0.10 -6
0.20 0
0.40 +2
0.80 +4
1.60 +5
2.40 +2
3.20 -3

I use the same EQ settings for both the CM500 and for the MC-60
connected to the front panel connector.

As I occasionally get good audio reports, these settings must be really
doing something as I not only have a face for radio but a voice for CW
and a fist for FT-8. ;-)

Whoops. Wrong. NB and NR are not transferred to the Sub from main and
can be set independently with BSET. Sorry.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Settings

2013-03-03 Thread Cady, Fred
Hi Dave,
I'm pretty sure AGC, NB and NR are the same on the main and the sub rx.
Double tapping A>B sets the filter settings (and freqs) the same. You
can change the sub rx filter by holding BSET and then changing the
filter, for example.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Settings

2013-03-03 Thread Dave Hawes
It is understood that you can't clone one K3 from another, but I have another
question:

Can you clone the Main RX to the SUB? I would like to be able to make the
SUB exactly like the MAIN, especially AGC, NB, Width, Shift, etc. It would be
great if this could be done with a single command of some sort.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Settings

2013-03-03 Thread Jay

Thanks All

Sure would make it easy on the expedition to have one file sitting on the
network that could be pulled..Oh well, back to PLAN A and save each setup to
the specific laptop.

No. The data is stored by K3 serial number.

I guess it would be possible to set some (if not all) of the configs on any
K3 using a suitable macro. Might be handy in a multi-station K3 contest
setup too I guess.

My understanding is this:
Unfortunately, no, only that K3. This is because the calibration
settings unique to that radio are also part of what is saved / restored.

I would love to see such a facility as well.

This has probably already been covered but I would like some suggestions
of

a good starting point for setting mic gain and compression for a MH-2 mic.
