Re: [Elecraft] SSB Net addition 5-17-2020

2020-05-21 Thread Bill Frantz
Thanks Eric for adding me. That was a big day for me. The first
QSO since November since I live in a faraday cage and I haven't
wanted to haress the management at my retirement community about
antennas, since they are up to their eyebrows dealing with Covid-19.

I hauled my KX3 out to a picnic table about 200-300 meters from
the nearest building with electricity and QRM, and set it up
with the AX1. I was abou 100 meters from the largest local
river, down in a valley. I had a brand new Bioenno 6AH battery
to power it since I had problems getting more that 3W out with
the internal Enloop batteries.

With this setup, everything worked FB. S0-1 noise and good
reception. It was my first QSO with the AX1, my first time
checking into the Elecraft net from New Hampshire, in spite of
many trials from what should have been a better location -- near
the top of a hill with a 2 element wire beam

The only thing that was about the same as checking in from CA
was NC0JW. He continued to be the best relay for my checkin. He
has really good ears. Thanks again Jim.

73 Bill AE6JV

PS. After the net, I made a 40M FT8 QSO with AA4SS which showed
that the AXE1 extender was doing its job.

Re: [Elecraft] SSB Net 4-19-2020

2020-04-20 Thread Bill Frantz
I had my KX3 out on a picnic table with an AX1 antenna here in
Peterborough, NH. I could hear NC0JW quite strongly and WB9JNZ
barely. I was having trouble transmitting at 5 watts, as
sometimes the radio would power off. I am assuming that either
the internal batteries weren't charged, or that there is a bad
connection somewhere in the battery holder. Since the batteries
all read over 1.2 volts when I checked them afterwards, I'm
guessing the bad connection.

Re: [Elecraft] SSB Net on 20 and 40 meters

2020-02-24 Thread kevinr

Howdy Ed,

Rick, KL7CW was my first check in on the 40 meter net yesterday.  I
live well south of Seattle.  At z the band was open to AK, ND, TX,
NM, ID, WA, and CA.  20 m at 2200z was broken.  Lots of noise with not
many signals.  I think 40 meters will work well until the time change.
I did hear a few folks talking about 160 meters opening before sunset so
the bands are not what one would think.

Kevin's CW Net announcement was only 24-hours late by the time I read it.

Not to the topic 80 & 40m SSB Nets:

I tuned in 14.303.5 Sunday at 1800 utc (9am AKST) and band was dead -
nada - no WWV on 15-MHz; not even digital stuff on 14.070. So
obviously did not hear the 20m net.  Made me wonder if triband yagi
was broke?

Local Alaskan hams have been saying 80m is good at mid-day and not at
night!  Very different than what I used to know.  Used to be 40m

So maybe 40m might have some propagation > 800 miles??? Seattle is

I only have a inverted-V and 100w for 40m but may listen March 1st.

I just called the 20 meter Elecraft CW Net. I worked folks in Michigan,
Georgia, North Dakota, & Japan. QSB was strong except to the West, the
JA was blasting in at S6 with weaker QSB. Waves of QRN were passing
through the band which wiped it out for a few seconds too. 100 watts on
CW works pretty well when the band is passable.

Running power seemed to help a lot.

I was using a 2 element wire beam at about 15 feet. It is
resonate on 20M, so the tuner isn't really needed.

Hi Jim,
Question regarding the SSB net on Sundays. What is the starting time for the
net? I'm a new user of Elecraft K2 #7491 (100W version).

Thanks, Tom Taylor KE7TT

Re: [Elecraft] SSB Net Sunday July 10th

2016-07-10 Thread Bill Frantz

Minor correction: AE6JV's K3 is serial 6299

The band really moved up and down during the net. Before the net
started, I could hear Jim in Texas very clearly, by 1808, when I
checked, he couldn't hear me and I was having trouble hearing
him. I think my info was relayed by a combination of Phil, NS7P
and John, N6JW, but I'm not sure because I wasn't hearing them
very well either. By 1840Z, I could hear many of the stations
again and John had come up to S9 and Phil was at S8.

Never a boring moment on HF.

2015-08-02 Thread Don Wilhelm

Phil and all,

The answer it YES. The current KRX3 will come with the new synth board,
so yes one would either have to buy a new synth board for the K3 or ask
here if anyone would like to send their old synth board to him to use
with the new KRX3. There are plenty of old synth boards around (I have
2 of them available for postage).

Phil, why don't you hold it on 17 meters this weekend? A number of the
SOTA crowd that frequent the SSB freq's from summits went to 17 and 12

 a good analog for 20.

Re: [Elecraft] SSB net cancelled

2015-03-08 Thread Phil Wheeler
It sure does a job on 20 SSB here. But it's
interesting to watch the band come and go (at one
point I worried that my K3 RX sensitivity had
died, but it sure came back!). Then I set the K3
and KX3 with panadapters up on different antennas.
Interesting to watch to differences in the
fullness of the band over a 50 kHZ range over
time: The two antennas (tri-band beam and rotating
dipole) sure show their different directivity when
oriented the same direction. Such fun! Then there
is the social aspect of the contest :-)

Time change: It's spring forward one hour; I
overdid it and thought it was Monday for a couple
of hours!

2015-02-08 Thread Lewis Phelps
I live in Pasadena CA, two miles from the base of a very high (7000’+ peaks)
mountain range that runs east to west, blocking signals to and from the North.
My K3 is barefoot (12 watts), fed into a 43-foot vertical.

Despite these limitations, Phil hears me well on most nets that I try to check
into. This is a tribute to his K3 and his operating skill.

We should all recognize what4 a great job Phil does in controlling the net each
week, and the work he puts into the task both to control the net and report
results each week.

Thank, Phil!

There has been some traffic lately about difficulty hearing my signal and
getting into the net. Here are the particulars. The majority of the calls
for check-ins is by me. I am in the NW corner of the continental US and
point my antenna generally east. My QTH isn’t ideal, but it isn’t terrible
either. I sit in a valley covered with 125 to 150’ Douglas-fir trees, and my
take off to the east is into a forested upslope. On the other hand, I don’t
have nearby neighbors and therefore have a reasonably low noise level. That,
coupled with the excellent K3 means I can hear most anyone who can put out a
modest signal. This includes many QRP stations from the eastern time zone.
My antenna is a two element cubical quad at 75’. The K3 drives a KPA500 at
 500 plus watts.

We use a number of relay stations. These are typically in southern CA, CO,
TX, GA and the northeast US. Others help out when they hear stations that
nobody else hears. We also call for QRP only stations. The bottom line is
that we pick up most everyone. This often includes ZL1PWD off the back of
 our antennas!

So, if you can’t hear me, listen for the other relays. If you can’t hear any
of the relay stations or me, use that as motivation for some antenna work
 this spring.

Re: [Elecraft] SSB net

2015-02-08 Thread Bill Frantz
I agree, Phil does an excellent job. What I really like about
the net is how stations around the country will relay for those
who can't contact Phil directly. Many of them seem to be in the
state of Washington, which I put down to the wonders of 20M propagation.

Computer programs can predict it. They can model it. They can study and
analyze it endlessly. But propagation, especially above 10 MHz, will
continue to confound anyone using those frequencies for a good many years to
come - at the least.

The only reliable indication that I have found are the beacons at 14.100. If
you can hear one near where you are trying to communicate, you have
something of a chance at success.

Wish I could understand propagation.  Last week all I could hear on 14.3035
was static.  Today Phil was S9 into the Central Coast of CA, and I was able
to check in with no problems at S7 to S9.  I guess the answer is to try each
week when I have the time.  With my wife in a hospital 3 hrs away with a

I've been fortunate to be able to check in fairly easy from Alaska.

Maybe because skip favors the roughly 1600mi path to Phil or the
longer path to N6JW (who is generally stronger). I started out only
running the K3/10 at 10w a couple years ago so that is pretty
good. It was more difficult conditions, yesterday, though I was
copying NS7P. I used N6JW sweep to check in easier. I was running
my 120w PA into the Hygain TH3mk4 at 50-feet.

Phil/All,

I am usually on the net during Daylight Savings Time months when it meets
at 2:00 PM EDT. I usually have no problems hearing Phil or John, N6JW,
from my QTH outside Atlanta, GA. If you are trying to check into the net
and can't get to Phil or John, and you can hear me, I will be more than
happy to relay for you.

Phil, you are about 300 degrees from my QTH, so I cover a good deal of the

Re: [Elecraft] SSB Net

2013-06-16 Thread Phil Hystad
I agree.

I gave up on QNI'ing into the SSB Elecraft net because I can never copy the net
control and obvously net control cannot copy me. A long time ago I did check
in but was picked up by an alternate in southern California. It is not
surprising that net control cannot hear me as he is only about 260 miles from
my QTH -- dead zone for 20 meters.

I think we need a relay in Arizona or southern California (maybe or New Mexico)
to cover all west coast stations plus and maybe there is a need somewhere in
mid-country too.

Phil,

As far as a signal report. I think I heard you this morning but definitely not
copy capable. I did not try to check in though as I did not hear any relay

front end and pointing south most likely would not affect your signal enough to
copy.

I've been off and on 20M all day since the Elecraft net mostly
listening. I managed a QRP PSK31 contact with ZL1LC. A strong

copy him at all. I got the idea he was in France from the
station he was working. There also seems to be a lot of noise
and QSB on the band. YMMV.

[Elecraft] Google Calendar UTC time issues -- solution [was: RE: Elecraft SSB Net announcement]

2013-04-21 Thread Dave New, N8SBE
Interesting hint to those that use Google Calendar to keep track of net
times, etc.

I had put these times on my calendar in what I thought was UTC, but it
turns out that 'London' time GMT+00 observes daylight savings time, thus
throwing the calendar off by one hour if you live in a local time zone
that also shifts for daylight time.

There are two solutions:

1) Either choose Iceland as the country, and then you call select
GMT+00 (No Daylight Savings) in the pull-down, or

2) Go to your settings page (under the little gear icon pull down, and
add a calendar (pick show all calendars), and choose GMT+00 (No Daylight
Time) in the pull down. Then it will always show up as a pick when you
are choosing time zones for a calendar entry, without having to dig
through the Iceland time zone picks.

I've struggled the past year or so with re-doing all my net reminders
every seasonal daylight change, until I just got fed up with it today
and did a Google search and found a forum posting explaining how to deal
with it properly.

Now, hopefully I'll be reminded at the right time for the Elecraft net,
instead of showing up an hour early (like today) or an hour late.

Re: [Elecraft] SSB Net on 14.303.50

2013-03-18 Thread Edward R Cole
I'm a bit surprised that so many were unaware of the solar
flare! Good of Bill Frantz to post info on this.

All HF bands were completely dead in AK yesterday. WWV on 15-MHz
totally missing! Of course we had visible aurora, locally. It was a
eme contest weekend for 144 432, but I chose to skip it as my
experience is that 2m-eme signals just disappear in the excited
ionosphere (which acts as a big attenuator in these circumstances).

I just checked 20m at 1800utc and the band seems to improved though
maybe still impacted (maybe only due to it being a work day?).

We have been having clear-sunny days starting out at zero-F but
climbing to 28-30 mid-day so fine wx for working outside on my dish
with only a light jacket.

Don't HFers watch solar conditions? :-)

possible tonight, mainly over the Arctic, as Earth's magnetic field
continues to reverberate from the impact. Check

2013-03-17 Thread Phil Shepard
Jim,

I'm curious. Are you saying that you were harrassed trying to check in? I
didn't hear any of that.

Conditions were tough today, and many who typically can work me couldn't today.
We used multiple relays to try to get everyone that we could, and we got 39
participants. Thanks to N6JW, W4RKS and others who helped out. I felt that we
did well considering the propagation.

There were a few calls that we heard but couldn't confirm. What is your call,
Jim?

Phil, NS7P

The weekly Elecraft SSB net will meet tomorrow (5/8/11) at 1800Z on 14.3035

I will be net control from Oregon, and we'll try relays to pull in the

I keep seeing geographic messages about 316. It's not about geography. It's
about your neighbor or the kid down the block. 14.316 is a standard ISA bus
frequency. You'll find most IBM ATs, some older color monitors, and a few
TVs use it. It may be the kid down the block that has a junker WINDOWS 95 he
is trying to fix. Somewhere, sometime, people are going to have interference
on that frequency. Is tradition so deep you can't move a few kHz?

Phil, I have noticed it since the 80's but have always been able to notch it
out
but actually don't find it as an issue at my location.

If i remember correctly The Icom net was held on 14.317 for over two decades
with that tone present and I don't remember it being such an issue
and it was more of a roundtable discussing features, issues, suggestions etc.
where you would tend to stay on for the whole net that many times lasted well
over an hour vs. simply checking in giving your serial number.

There was a special events station on 14.315 which forced the move of

Sounds like you moved the net to 14.312, but there was traffic on 14.310

Hi Roger,

I sent an email message on this topic on 3/3 to your email address, but
perhaps it was blocked. The text of that message follows:
-
Hi Roger,

This is an off-net email to you regarding the SSB net for the rest of
this month. I told Phil that I would try to share the NCS duties while
he is unavailable. Thanks for covering the net last Sunday.
This coming Sunday, 3/7/2010, is problematic because the ARRL SSB DX
contest will be in full swing. I will be trying to operate in the
contest at least part of the time, and even if I weren't it might be
difficult to run the net anyway if past year's events are an indication
of the QRM level to be expected.

Barring any changes in my plans, I should be available for the rest of
the month to run the net or assist anyone else who might offer to be NCS.
