John,

My old (2000?) Toshiba Satellite 2450 has, in addition to the microphone
jack (monaural), a Line-in jack (stereo) as well as a 25 pin Parallel Port.
It weighs 3 kg.

I prefer the feel of its keyboard to that of my newer Toshiba Qosmio F20,
which does not have a Line-in jack.

Sorry that I missed your first question.

I have a ~3 year ol Samsung N120 netbook that seems to work fine. I've
only just installed HDSDR, but it was able to decode SSB signals OK. I
had to swap the left an right channels, but no other problems. I was
actually a little surprised as I had never tried to use the mic input
previously.

To add to the list, my older HP Pavilion DV7 with Vista Home Premium
has a line in. It is labelled as external mic but is really a stereo
line in with switchable preamp. The sound device is by IDT and the
drivers support 24 bits at 192KHz!

Unfortunately, like so many other motherboard sound devices, the noise
level is so high that external USB sound devices provide significantly
better performance with demodulated audio. I have not even attempted
to try the built-in sound with direct I/Q audio due to the noise level.

The 11 MacBook Air has stereo in. :-) And it is NICE and small.
You could - if slightly crazy - install Windows on it. :-) Or just run DSPradio
/ GNUradio.

Yeah, the premise that you can't get a laptop with stereo in is an
over-generalization. Gaming machines are expensive, but most if not all
have stereo in, and pretty good sound modules. I have an ASUS rip-snorter
G60 with an i7 quad chip, designed for the hard-core game player. Its
input is labeled Mic In but can be set via the Windows Audio taskbar
control to stereo line in with 192K sampling.

Stereo line inputs started disappearing from laptops almost ten years ago.

How about this adapter?

BTW -- I just learned that the $70 Tascam US100 interface I've been
recommending has
been discontinued. The replacement appears to be the US122, which BH is
selling for
$80. The US122 has the additional feature of 96 kHz or 48 kHz sampling
rate, which
means that it would be useful for spectrum display, or to drive skimmer.

Hi John,

The KX3 I/Q seems to work fine with my HP Pavilion DV6 Windows 7 64 bit laptop.
 It
comes with sound card inputs for MIC and PHONES. The built-in audio is IDT and
I
have the options of selecting 2 channel input in 16 or 24 bit sampling rates,
from
44100 to 192000 Hz. For JT65A in WSJT, though, I use 24 bit sampling at 44100
Hz (a
multiple of 11025 Hz, for which JT65A was written). It seems many of the more
recent laptop computers have such built-in sound card flexibility. GL and VY
