forwarded for Ted Reply Separator Subject:Re: Halon resistant power cords. Author: ted.eck...@apcc.com List-Post: emc-pstc@listserv.ieee.org Date: 6/27/00 8:54 AM Halon is very closely related to the CFC compounds that had been used for cleaning electronics for years. One common form of Halon is Trifluorobromoethane, CF(3)Br. Like most fluorocarbons, it is fairly inert and will not react with electronics or insulation. Because it is not reactive, it has been frequently used in computer rooms, aircraft and marine applications where equipment must remain operational even when a fire suppressant is present. I assume that most power cord manufactures see Halon as being no more harmful to power cords than air. Halon does react strongly with ozone and its use is strictly limited by the Montreal Protocol. There are new chemicals being used to replace Halon, but it has been hard to find a chemical that is both effective at suppressing fire and as chemically inert. RE: Resistors Between TNV-3 and SELV
Peter - UL has no problem with components bridging the insulation, provided you comply with the appropriate testing in the standard and provide otherwise appropriate clearances and creepages (just as you expected). In Europe, the Nordic countries require Supplementary insulation between SELV and TNV of any flavor, so you'll probably hit a knot there. If you can pass the tests (there are Deviations for the higher values for impulse and EST in Clause 6 of AS/NZS3260; I haven't seen the new edition of AS/NZS60950, but it's most likely the same) and provide Basic insulation, Australia and New Zealand should be OK with this, too. FWIW: Current Limitation from the street followup ...
Just a follow-up after some asking around. Don't know if anyone's interested. A standard pole pig has a 167KVA or 167KVA/240V ~ 695 amp capacity. The max 600 amp estimate was probably very close to reality. But that's for something up on the pole. For heavier currents, the electrical company will have to mount something on the ground and given the correct amount of money, would be glad to install it for you. I'm being told the complete range of street voltages here in the colonies is something like 2.4Kv to 24Kv, but that the 8Kv to 14Kv range is more common. Hi George, I remember a couple of years ago South Africa requiring that our US EMC reports somehow were traceable to EAL, e.g. issued by a US-based lab with some affiliation/endorsement by a European lab.
