Re: [PSES] Auto-Deletion of 558 Subscribers to EMC-PSTC

2019-04-24 Thread Jim Bacher
Please keep in mind if you run into issues with the list, best thing to do
is send a private email to both Mike and Scott, rather than the list. Their
email address are at the bottom of every email from the list, so they are
easy to find. Reason for both, is one of them might be traveling and not
have access to admin functions.

As they have set the list back to manual deletion, there will no longer be
automatic deletions from the list. They will not be as fast as the auto
function and can judge what action is needed. The down side is they are
going to be deluged with list admin emails, which will consume more of
their time.

Keep in mind they are volunteers, and are not paid IEEE employees. Same of
course is true for Dave Heald and myself.

Mark,

No, it absolutely must be YELLOW as the recognized colour combination is RED
and YELLOW. See NFPA 79, 2015, 9.2.5.4, IEC 60204-1:2018, 10.7, ISO 13850:2015,
4.3.6.

BTW, here are the actual words WRT to the colour and size:

> 4.3.6 The actuator of the emergency stop device shall be coloured RED. As far

As to the “Emergency Stop” text marking:

The IEC standard that details the requirements for the estop device is IEC
60947-5-5, Low voltage switchgear and controlgear—Part 5-5: Control circuit
devices and switching elements—Electrical emergency stop device with mechanical
latching function.

No, I feel sure that the auto-unsubscribe bot isn't triggered if there
is ANY sort of response to the message.  'Address doesn't exist' or
'address unreachable' seem to be the triggers. Those can be produced by
all sorts of glitches in the net, nothing to do with individual

Gents,

This is a very timely discussion as some of this has come up as a topic of
discussion for me in just the last couple days. Specifically regarding the
yellow background. My question is:

  * Must the background be yellow, or can it be any color as long as it
provides strong contrast with the red button? Someone suggested blue as a
background color because allegedly this is easier for color blind persons to
see.

What standard(s) does this requirement come from?

Hi Brian,

I’ve dealt with many related questions on my blog,
machinerysafety101.com
https://machinerysafety101.com/series/emergency-stop/, but not these specific
questions, so I’ll answer them now. Then I’ll add them to the blog (thanks for
the inspiration!).

1) How mushroom-shaped is enough?

There’s no hard answer to this, but I can say this: there are three fundamental
shapes for push button operators, flush, extended, and mushroom. The intent is
that neither flush nor extended head operators be used for e-stop functions.
More info in IEC 60947 on that.

2) Yellow background. Yellow backgrounds have to be big enough to provide clear
contrast with the red button operator. A tiny ring, or just a yellow stripe
around the base of the button is not enough in my opinion. Typical rings are 2x
the operator nominal size, i.e., 30 mm buttons get a 60 mm ring, 22 mm buttons
get a 44 mm ring. These are common practice recommendations.

3) Printing “emergency stop” on the yellow ring is not required in any
jurisdiction anymore, and has been removed from NFPA 79, as well as IEC
60204-1. Just leave it off, as the red/yellow combination is internationally
recognized as the sign for e-stop and emergency switching off devices.

Whether the English is acceptable is a matter for national legislation, so

I am constantly being asked three questions about E-Stops which I cannot find
the answers to.

1. "Mushroom Shape" is specifically called out in some standards but the newer
style e-stop switches are becoming less and less Mushroom Shaped. If this a
concern?
2. "Yellow Background" is getting smaller and smaller. Some small e-stop
switches has no yellow background but has a small area on the shaft of the
switch that is yellow. This is not technically the "background". Is this
acceptable or is a yellow background required in addition? The size of the
yellow area is not specified as far as I have found.

3. English text "Emergency Stop" printed on the button or on the yellow
background ring: Is this a problem in non-english speaking countries? Do I
have to translate (like in French for France and Canada) or are these words
"globally acceptable"? I have been telling our engineers to choose e-stop
switches and yellow rings without text but some manufacturers only provide it
with the text.

Thanks to all.

To all members,

Last night Listserv, following list rules, deleted 558 (of 632) subscribers
from the EMC-PSTC Email List. All subscribers haev been added back to the list.

Since I only had email addresses to import back, 37 subscribers had their first
and last names changed to be empty fields. I apologize if you had already
re-subscribed this morning and now had your name information deleted. But your
email address is definitely there. If you want to enter your name back in,
please let me know and I can do that for you (if you can't do it yourself).

The deletion happened because we have an auto-delete setting turned on in our
list management rule set. This was turned on years ago bcause we were getting
too many warnings and errors related to bounce messages and mail loops. All of
these had to be dealt with manually one at a time so the rule was enabled.

Subject: [PSES] FAO the Admins - Reinstatement of my blueyonder.co.uk email
address, and related general issues!

To the EMC-PSTC Admins:

This morning I received the attached automated message stating that I had been
removed from the EMC-PSTC list because of repeated rejections of emails to my
blueyonder.co.uk email address.

I investigated and found that this was because of changes that my email
provider had made to its automated spam filtering systems, and that email
senders must make changes to THEIR systems to prevent this happening again –
this affects emails to the following domains: virginmedia.com,
blueyonder.co.uk, ntlworld.com, virgin.net.

I followed the resubscription route and am now thus (at least temporaily!)
“back” but I cc’d my resubscribe email to several of the EMC-PSTC addresses I
have, including emc-p...@majordomo.ieee.org
in the hope that this would mean that the included message about how to fix the
issues would come to the attention of the Admins. Unfortunately, however, I
received emails to confirm that all of those cc emails were either rejected or
“timed out” (the majordomo address) before delivery.

Therefore, here is the text that I included in that resubscribe message about
the issue and how to fix it so that it does not happen again:

I quote from
https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Email/Advice-for-sending-emails-to-Virgin-Media-domains/td-p/3957034
 which states this:
“Advice for sending emails to Virgin Media domains

on ‎18-03-2019 10:13

In the last week we have made a couple of tweaks to the email platform to
better our spam detection, these tweaks involve checking if the sending email
domain has the appropriate records to send email.

We ask that anyone sending emails to our domains (virginmedia.com,
blueyonder.co.uk, ntlworld.com, virgin.net), make sure your domain has the
basic records needed which include SPF and/or DMARC. SPF is the more common of
the two and we will enforce greylisting if a domain has none.

What is greylisting?

Greylisting means we temporarily reject an incoming mail from a domain that
hits our specified criteria (mentioned above), we basically let the sending
server know they need to try again later, normally an email server set up
correctly will retry the email again automatically (the time frame can vary, it
is dependent upon the sending email server).

Why are we doing this?

It is best practice to always have a correctly set up email server, as this
will give the best chances of delivery, as spam protection mechanisms will be
able to correctly identify the email as legitimate. We are noticing an
increasing amount of spam campaigns that do not do this, so this is our way of
detecting and deterring them.

I know this is quite a shock as some email senders are used to not needing this
(even though it allows spammers to freely abuse their domains) but we are
trying to protect our customers and feel this small change will help that. We
do plan to make further changes but we will now start slowly and ramp it up as
we go.

As always we appreciate your feedback.

For more information please visit our bulk sender’s guidelines here:
https://www.virginmedia.com/help/virgin-media-mail-how-to-send-bulk-emails,
although this is more aimed at large senders it is still relevant to anyone
with their own domain.”

Re: [PSES] E-Stop Questions

2019-04-24 Thread Doug Nix, C.E.T.
Hi Brian,

I’ve dealt with many related questions on my blog, machinerysafety101.com
https://machinerysafety101.com/series/emergency-stop/, but not these specific
questions, so I’ll answer them now.

Best,
Doug Nix

Mushrooms come in all sorts of shape, so the description is not very

Whether the English is acceptable is a matter for national legislation,

Yes, but I am not on gmail. I was unsubscribed due to 2 or 3 (it's not
clear) email failures since 9 April. I have protested, because 3 failures is
far too few for such drastic action, and the failures may well be due to
nothing that is under the control of either the subscriber or the ISP. For
instance, a DNS-lookup failure at the IEEE could cause an 'email address
does not exist' failure.

Are you going to set the trigger for auto-delete to some more reasonable
number of email failures, on a 'per month' basis, not 'over all time'?

The deletion happened because we have an auto-delete setting turned on
in our list management rule set. This was turned on years ago bcause
we were getting too many warnings and errors related to bounce
messages and mail loops. All of these had to be dealt with manually
one at a time so the rule was enabled.

So hopefully it is no big deal and just a glitch the List Server

time since January, it seemed like a bigger deal than it really was. Sorry

[PSES] Auto-Deletion of 558 Subscribers to EMC-PSTC

Last night Listserv, following list rules, deleted 558 (of 632) subscribers
from the EMC-PSTC Email List. All subscribers haev been added back to the

[PSES] EMC-PSTC Listserver Glitch

2019-04-24 Thread Michael Cantwell
Hi all,

Last night, the listserver deleted 538 subscribers to the EMC-PSTC list. We
believe that we have corrected the setting that likely caused this to
happen. We've also been able to re-import the deleted addresses as new
subscribers, so hopefully, all those deleted (including me, one of the
admins), can read this email and now understand what happened.

We'll monitor closely to see if the problem has been corrected, hopefully,
we won't have another auto-delete. We're sorry for this inconvenience and
we certainly hope it has been corrected.

--

Regards,
Mike

All again,

It seems this is a system -wide problem and not gmail specifically.
Someone on the server side is tweaking the system and I recommend we
allow some time to work it out. We should probably minimize the "me
too" messages.

Thanks all, Doug

2019-04-24 Thread John Woodgate
Yes, but I am not on gmail. I was unsubscribed due to 2 or 3 (it's not
clear) email failures since 9 April. I have protested, because 3
failures is far too few for such drastic action, and the failures may
well be due to nothing that is under the control of either the
subscriber or the ISP. For instance, a DNS-lookup failure at the IEEE
could cause an 'email address does not exist' failure.

Subject: [PSES] Big Boot from List Server

Since the first of the year, I have been having trouble maintaining my
subscription to this List Server. According to those who administrate this, the
problems are all at our end but our eMail Administrator looked into it and said
the problem that is being reported is outside our control (Phishing).

So in early April, I switched to my Gmail account thinking that this move
should resolve all the issues. Nope. Today I was booted again for 2
undeliverable emails.

The problem is not my posts because I haven't posted since my last
re-subscription. I don't know what else to try.

Is anyone else having similar troubles? Any suggestions other than just
re-subscribing every few weeks?

I appreciate your input.
