I have them on my Shizuoka:

My machine uses a draw bar driven by an electric impact wrench to retain
and eject the holders. It's noisy but seems to work:

[Emc-users] Manually loading motmod

2008-05-08 Thread Eric H. Johnson
Hi all,

I get the following error when trying to manually do a loadrt of motmod:

Insmod: error inserting
/usr/realtime-2.6.24.16-rtai/modules/emc2/motmod.ko:-1 unknown symbol in
module.

This is the error when using ubuntu 8.04, but I get essentially the same
error under 6.06. It can be easily reproduced by doing the following:

Run EMC with the tkemc sim configuration, then save it to a file, for
example:
halcmd save > tkemc.hal

Shut down EMC.
Start the realtime, i.e.:
realtime start

Reload the configuration, such as:
halcmd source tkemc.hal

Which will result in the above error, although everything else seems to be
processed correctly.

Manually typing in:
halcmd loadrt motmod base_period_nsec=100 servo_period_nsec=100
traj_period_nsec=1000 key=111 num_joints=3

Results in the same error.

I tried to find the source code for motmod.ko, but I was unable to locate
something like motmod.c. There were a couple of similar files, but don't
appear to be the source for motmod.ko. I haven't really tried grepping for
it yet.

Anyway, does anyone have some insight on the cause of this error?

Thanks,
Eric

You can check dmesg for the symbol missing..
the source for motmod is in emc2/src/emc/motion/*.c|h
It gets built from a couple of files..
Anyways, if it works by running emc2 then the module is fine, and you're
missing something (dmesg will shed lights there)

Alex

"unknown symbol in module." If you look in dmesg it will probably tell
you what symbol is undefined. At the moment I don't know what might be
missing, the symbol name would be a clue.

Regarding the source for motmod - you are right there is no single file
motmod.c. The motion module is the result of linking together several C
files. Most are in src/emc/motion, although a few get pulled in from
elsewhere like src/emc/kinematics.

Ah, found the relevant chunk of the main Makefile:

obj-$(CONFIG_MOTMOD) += motmod.o
motmod-objs := emc/kinematics/cubic.o
motmod-objs += emc/kinematics/tc.o
motmod-objs += emc/kinematics/tp.o
motmod-objs += emc/motion/motion.o
motmod-objs += emc/motion/command.o
motmod-objs += emc/motion/control.o
motmod-objs += emc/motion/homing.o
motmod-objs += emc/motion/emcmotglb.o
motmod-objs += emc/motion/emcmotutil.o
motmod-objs += libnml/posemath/_posemath.o
motmod-objs += libnml/posemath/sincos.o $(MATHSTUB)

Re: [Emc-users] Manually loading motmod

2008-05-08 Thread Eric H. Johnson
Alex, John,

Ok, it is obvious now. The missing symbols were kinematicsType,
kinematicsInverse, and kinematicsForward, which all are defined on the
subsequent line when exported with halcmd save. Specifically:
loadrt trivkins

Thus one can't do a halcmd save and then load the saved text with halcmd
source, without checking the ordering, although some basic ordering is
performed by the way it groups things into sections.

Thanks,
Eric

Ah - you are dealing with a special case. Regular HAL modules don't
have any dependencies on each other. You can load them in any order,
then once all are loaded you connect the pins together with signals.

The kinematics code isn't a regular HAL component - it doesn't connect
with pins, instead it uses function calls. We made it look like a HAL
component so it could be loaded and used like one without having to
recompile when you change kinematics. But there is a dependency between
motmod and kins and they need to be loaded in the right order.

[Emc-users] having to reload fpga config on m5i20 on every bootup?

2008-05-08 Thread Anders Wallin
Hi all,

I'm using an m5i20 card with the hostmot5_4eh.bit configuration that
allows PWM at 50 kHz.

I have to reload the fpga configuration after each bootup of the machine
with 'sudo m5i20cfg hostmot5_4eh.bit 0'

In my HAL files I use the m5i20 driver without loading the default
(wrong, in my case) fpga config:
loadrt hal_m5i20 loadFpga=0 dacRate=1

(the driver assumes the PWM clock is 33MHz, but with the modified config
it's actually 100MHz, so I config it to 16.7 kHz and get 3*16.7kHz=50kHz
PWM output)

should I have to do this m5i20cfg command every time I run emc or should
the fpga config stick once it's loaded?

The Mazak Micro 5 has a part that swings the holder 90 degrees
from the plane of the tool wheel to the plane of the spindle,
then the changer arm swaps them, then that part swings the tool
back up to the wheel. Many smaller changers have the tool
carousel in the same plane as the spindle so there is just the
one arm that does a down-spin-up motion.

You need only load the FPGA once, as long as you always have the LoadFPGA flag
set to 0. If LoadFPGA is set to 0 the Device_LoadFpga function in the hal_m5i20
module is never called, This is the only function in hal_m5i20 that mucks
about with the PCI bridges GPIO bits responsible for re-programming the
FPGA...

[Emc-users] Hotel for EMC-Fest

2008-05-08 Thread Steve Stallings
Hi All,

I was getting concerned about hotel reservations for the fest,
so I started checking. The economy does not seem to have
depressed the rates.

Having at the Econo Inn and the Americas Best in past years,
I decided to go slightly upscale. These two do offer the best
rates and while they are nothing to brag about, they were
acceptable. That is except for one thing, I needed workable
internet access and neither passed the test when I stayed
there.

In checking around I was astonished to find that the Best
Western was sold out during the time period, Choice says
they only have one rather expensive room available, and
the Holiday Inn wants almost $100 a night.

My best result was with the Fairfield Inn (309-344-1911).
They negotiated a rate of $69.99 per night for a room
with two beds, two guests for a full weeks stay and provided
a confirmed reservation number. When asked, they said they
could offer the same rate to anyone coming to the CNC Workshop
for the full week.

Regards,
Steve Stallings

From a cold boot (power cycle), you will always have to reload - the
configuration is stored in RAM, and goes away when the power goes away.

I'm not sure if a warm boot (reset button) will erase it.

Does a warm boot reset the FPGA and/or the bridge chip?

Re: [Emc-users] Hotel for EMC-Fest

2008-05-08 Thread Dale Ertley
Steve,
I plan on spending a week at the fest. My first year.

Which weekend is better to be at the fest? Or what days are best to be at the
fest?

  Thank you
  Dale

Steve Stallings <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

The second weekend.

The workshop officially runs from Monday to Sunday. Some of us show up
the preceding Saturday evening, and start setting up. More setup
Sunday, then things start rolling on Monday morning. The final Sunday
is when things wind down, as people head for home. For example I
usually load up Saturday night, and head out Sunday morning.

Usually the BIOS generates a PCI reset at warm start,
this will reset the FPGA...

John,
We can forgive you for not living in God's country. Although, I
cannot gripe too much about southeast Missouri. I have a machine shop
in Eminence, Mo.
I tell people that Eminence is not the end of the world but you can
see it from there. :)
They don't have any EMC machines - YET!
When I get the retrofit down to a week or two instead of a year or
two I will put some controls on machine there.

WGB
You are welcome to stop by here whenever you would like.
What do you do in Lenexa?
I get to KC once in a while as I have a sister that lives in Shawnee.

I understand the wife thing. My wife just walked in and told me it
was time to get busy. I told her I AM busy. She just doesn't
understand.
   O well, BBL :)

thanks

[Emc-users] Tnx

2008-05-08 Thread Dave Engvall
Hi all,
Just wanted to express my thanks to all the developers and others
that have helped with the latest release
of emc.

I started at about 11:00 am this morning to update my 2.0.0 to the
latest release.
Installed Live off the CD then did the updates (which took about 1.5
hours). I swear everyone else wanted them at the same time because my
usually decent cable went as low as 35 Kb/sec.
I had a few issues with changed nomenclature in hal related to
setting the spindle speed and homing on index.
Ray Henry and people on IRC, mainly jepler got me set straight.
Home on index now works for the stg card ( I think thanks there go to
alex).
By 4:00 pm everything was working.

Many thanks to all who spend time working on emc in various
capacities. I will do some testing in the next few days of things
that didn't work too well with 2.0.0 and see if I don't get
improvements. :-)

See most of you, I hope, at fest.

Dave

Re: [Emc-users] EMC Fest 2008

2008-05-08 Thread Dave Engvall
Hi Aram,

RS-274NGC as far as I can tell just doesn't provide for special
functions. It does provide G01, G02, G03. Anything else is programmed
by using that facility and programming externally. A few
manufacturers have provided splines specially coded within their
version of the interpreter ( Okuma comes to mind). More might do so
if there were an universally agreed upon standard to representing the
splines.

To get around this most people with special needs write programs in
their favorite language that represent the desired function in G code
usually as small straight line segments or as short G02 or G03
segments to interpolate
the function to the desired accuracy.

This is also true of most of the CAD programs; they output small
segments to represent contours, etc.

The developers of EMC2 have worked on making the short segment stuff
work well and that is within the limits of
the present interpreter.

So my suggestion is to grab your favorite programming language and go
to work. Check Jon Elson's page for
an example of hole making. I occasionally write programs to
represent contours that are curved in two dimensions. Not too
difficult to do.
You just have to pay attention to details. A little geometry/trig and
a good loop can do wonders.

HTH
