I may be able to come, my wife with me. I'd probably be there a couple
days on the early end of the deal, maybe longer. The lower end prices
would suit us much better than the higher for sure.

Gentlemen,
Today, Robert went to three hotels to check availability and price.
He will go tomorrow to at least one more. He found the Best Western @
$73.00 + tax / day . These rooms are large enough for two people. I
believe we can probably get cheaper rooms. We will find out tomorrow.
I will find the cheapest room we can get.

I'm 99% sure I'm going. A little less sure about dates and times,
although I'll probably be there the entire time. The drive is a bit
longer than I really want to do, and I can get a $200 round trip ticket
from here to Kansas City MO (3 hours away from Wichita). Tickets to
Wichita are _much_ more expensive - enough that I can rent a car and
drive the three hours, so that is my plan. Anyone who wants to share
the ride from KC to Wichita is welcome - I don't know my flight dates
and times yet, but get in touch and maybe we can coordinate.

$55 is much nicer than $90. I'm cheap, and all I need from a hotel room
is walls, roof, shower and bed. I tend to spend very little time at the
hotel anyway.

2009-03-25 Thread Jeff Epler
I'm pleased to announce the second beta release of the emc 2.3, emc

package repository:

Many thanks to all the developers who have been working over the course
of many months to deliver the new features in this release.

Changes since emc 2.2.8 (includes changes in beta1 and beta2):

I am going, for sure! I don't know, yet, if any of my family will be
tagging along.
I expect to be there for the whole thing, but might arrange to travel
there the first day, and arrive that afternoon.
(On the other hand, depending if there is a solid agenda drawn up
beforehand, I might decide to not miss a good talk the first day, and
want to be there the night before.)

I have found that a PCI parallel port card works quite well, and is

Thanks for looking into the group rates.

I'd rather stay in a cheap dive and spend all my money on beer. If it's
$90 per night i'll probably just sleep in the truck.

My plan right now is to arrive late Wednesday night, attend Fest
Thursday through Sunday, and leave on Monday morning.

Hey folks.

I just found out that I should be able to go (yay!).

There are two or three hotels near Stuart's place, ranging from $55 or
so to $90 or so a night.

I'm thinking of calling these places (at least the Days Inn and Hampton
Inn) to see about group rates, so I'd like to get a count of people who
might attend, and whether they'd need a hotel room.

Please respond to this thread if you're thinking about attending, and

We will have PCI express versions of Anything I/O cards later this year (I'm
playing with one now (144 I/O pins 2M gate FPGA), but HostMot2 driver support
and firmware changes will probably extend the EMC support time frame to the
end of this year. This is because DMA will be required for good performance
with our PCIe cards, and both the driver and my firmware need to be updated to
support DMA.

That said, I would not worry too much about PCI dissapearing, I expect
Motheboards with PCI to be available for at least 5 more years (PCI-PCIe are
trivial to translate). Because of this ease and transparancy of PCI-PCIe
translation, there will also be low cost mezzanine cards that allow
a few PCI cards to plug into a PCIe slot.

Re: [Emc-users] using a 5i20 for stepper motor control

2009-03-25 Thread Rob Jansen
Sebastian, Alex, Eric, Jon,

(did I forget anyone who responded, then I'm sorry)

Thanks for all the tips.
As Sebastian suggested I will definitely do a system analysis before
spending money but spending 200 USD on a 10,000 EUR machine is not that
high an investment. I will not opt for the 7i43 on the parallel port, I
was looking at th 5i20 just to get rid of the parport which is not on
all my mother boards. The question then is if PCI is the proper choice
(will there also be a PCI express version of the card?).

I will also re-read the manual, but I thought the section quoted by Eric
was only true for exact path or stop mode. The use of G64 Pxxx should
prevent a full de-accelerate / accelerate cycle between two vectors -
but I do vaguely remember that I also read [on this list] that EMC only
looks ahead one vector at a time.
So testing on a sim configuration seems a good thing to do and with
motherboards / memory sizes and PC configurations this is something that
I can do with the 10,000 G1 segments that Jon used.

The machine will be used for prototyping / small series production.
Speed is kind of important, amongst others I am milling large wooden
molds that are used to create two carbon fiber parts. One mold has a
calculated milling time (retrieved from both my G-code generator and the
file -> properties from Axis) of 3-5 days but with current performance
of my setup this seems to be more in the range of 2-4 weeks of real
milling time (estimated from running a small section of the program that
should take 1 hour).
This is for an insane hobby project but the machine also has to be put
to commercial use.

Thanks for all the hints, these will keep me busy for another few weeks
or so before making final decisions.

Regards,

Rob
