No memory = no worky. ;P A computer must have functional RAM in a supported configuration, and it must have a functional CPU that is supported both by the hardware and by the power supply capability of the board. The CPU and RAM and some other parts have to pass the POST before the system gets around to looking for and turning on video. Something else to check, both Intel and AMD have produced various CPUs that will plug into sockets they are not at all compatible with. If you are lucky all that will happen is the computer will do nothing instead of destroying the CPU with too much power or power applied to data connections. Useless when you're attempting to discover *why* the engine will not run. When troubleshooting a PC board that won't boot, the first thing is to install the minimum amount of supported RAM. If the CPU is removable, you'll need one you know is supported by an older BIOS. Typically the BIOS chip will have a label with the revision number installed at manufacture. If that one doesn't support the CPU you want to use but a newer version does, you'll have to scrounge up an older/slower CPU just to use for updating the BIOS. Some boards will go ahead and boot with an unrecognized CPU but will lock to a slow speed and may also prevent any setup changes. But for a RAM configuration that's not supported, not going to boot. Get a POST (Power On Self Test) card. They have two 7-segment LED displays that cycle through 2 digit hexadecimal numbers during POST and should end on FF (a few manufacturers don't end POST with FF), followed by beginning to boot the operating system. If it stops partway through, the code it stops on, or the one just before it stops, will tell you what may be holding it up. 'Course if it's a non-removable part the board is toast, unless you want to ship it off to someone with an SMT rework setup and can find replacement components. If the POST display instantly goes to FF when you hit the power button, that's most likely a bad CPU, or something major wrong with the board, such as a way out of spec or non-functioning power supply to the CPU. Is there firmware available for the 7i43, so I can use the 7i44 sserial card? The other connector can be anything. I looked on Mesa's site but found nothing applicable. ultimately I will use the 7i73 with the 7i44. Time to build a usable operator panel... I've used an online nesting service that worked great. I think it cost $5.00 per nest or so, but the same nesting software if I were to buy it was thousands of dollars. The money saved by doing effective nesting was large.. making the $5.00 per nest charge insignificant. It will be interesting to see if they succeed.$25/month is pretty cheap. You are probably right. I am not a fan of the subscription software model, especially when you have to be online to have access to most features. Two bad motherboards are less likely than one bad DIMM. Yes, you wouldn't get video if the memory was bad---without memory, the system probably runs a limited amount of code from BIOS ROM, and stops trying to test and use memory, before initializing the video subsystem. Peter is right. You need to read the manual. Motherboards beep in codes on startup if something is wrong. Do you have the 4pin power plug jack connected on the MB? I think the 1900's all require those to be connnected to the power supply. Otherwise beep code! Servo drives and VFDs are two different animals. VFDs are typically designed to spin "squirrel cage" induction motors (think standard 3 phase motors), where rotor slip is used to generate the magnetic field in the rotor. Servo drives are designed to spin synchronous AC motors/servo motors that typically have a magnet rotor. The rotor never slips out of phase with the field. And that is why servo drives/motors can be used as positioning systems. Some servo drives can be dumbed down to spin induction motors but there is little point in doing that since servo drives are typically much more expensive. Trying to mix servo drive and servo motor manufactures gets very tricky. You need to fully understand the motor and its specs and then you need to have a Servo drive that is adjustable and adaptable to that motor and encoder type.Many cheaper drives are designed to connect to one or two models of motors and that is it. This is not a good place to guess at anything. Also, you can use Gedit with Arc Generator to build a G code file. I just need to add the XZ to the Arc Generator if your interested. A servo drive and a VFD are not the same thing. If you want to drive a spindle then the VFD is good enough but for servos you should use a matching servo drive.
