Easter Monday is a public holiday in many parts of the world. Maybe
this is true in IL?

Which version of LinuxCNC are you using?

In 2.7 incremental jogging (which I think includes wheel jogging) is
not supported, as described in the Gantrykins documentation:
http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.7/html/man/man9/gantrykins.9.html

Unless your machine is set up with separate home switches for each
side to support auto-squaring then it might be simpler to configure as
a simple slaved config and trivkins (ie, just send the X step pulses
to two drives)

If you do wish to use Gantrykins then you should consider using the
joints_axes12 development branch of LinuxCNC (which needs more
testing, but has been reliable on my trivkins machines for years). I
believe that that does support world-mode incremental jogging.

I suppose it could be Andy, but in my 81 years, I've never had an Easter
Monday off. That would be a new experience for me.

In fact, I've had several Easter Sunday's that I worked. When the cash
cow quits, you get up and roll to see what happened, when it happens.

In one instance, I spent the entire day overhauling a GE AK-225 circuit
breaker that picked sign on time on an Easter Sunday, to cook its
contacts.

The guts of that breaker, extracted from the housing, are about 60 lbs. A
bit on the heavy duty category, it handles up to 1200 amps/phase, but in
this case the over currant trips were set for about 650 amps.

It was feeding the beam supply for a GE UHF transmitter, which was 3 ea
50 kw powerline cans wired backwards to send about 14,000 volts at 12
amps to the 3 phase bridge rectifiers that made the 19,700 volts for two
4KM100LA klystrons.

Primary windings to the breaker and back to the cans were 2 ea per phase,
of 750mcm cable. The transformers were filled with Askerol, aka 25 or
30 gallons of PCB's each. You might be able to find traces of pcb's in
me yet as I have worked on stuff filled with it, up to my elbows, fixing
a bolted connection that burned off inside one of those, and later,
working on a Townsend TX, where all that stuff was in a big square can
covered several inches deep so nothing could arc over. But you had to
open the lid and fish out the rectifier stacks to repair them
occasionally.

You get as much pcb's in you from breathing the fumes as you get from
getting it on your skin, where it takes about 2 weeks worth of scrubbing
with boraxo in the shower before folks quit asking whats that smell.

When that stuff was outlawed, and we couldn't get replacement cans filled
with it, fire regulations meant we had to move the crisco (vegetable
oil) filled cans we could get, out of the building to a caged area
outside. That took a run of 6" conduit to get the power out there from
the breaker, and a 4" run coming back in for the high voltage, using a
special semi-conductor wire insulation with bells for corona control on
the ends, designed for direct burial. The new cans were "crisco" filled,
and needed 10% of the maintainance the Askerol filled cans needed, that
crap ate the si rubber gaskets out of the top access covers about every
3 years. The si rubber seals on a crisco filled can will often last 50
years hanging on a pole in a residential area. You can probably see one
of those from your property as the house drop comes from one of those.

Just one of my "war stories" folks.

I hope everyone enjoyed the reason for Easter.

Cheers, Gene Heskett

Well there is a DEFAULT_VELOCITY.

Thinking over what all I did last night, I think IF joint 0 or its linked joint
3 were manipulated in Joint Mode, it would work but then immediately throw a
Following Error when entering Joint Mode (or, IIRC, going to the MDI window).
Without ANY sort of move involved.

Any idea what would cause that?

One thing to check is that you have a [TRAJ]DEFAULT_VELOCITY entry in the INI.
http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.7/html/config/ini-config.html#_traj_section

Though when that was discovered the f-error happened at the end of a jog.

This might just be a side-effect of how the command and feedback pins
are connected in HAL.
What pin is connected to axis.0.motor-position-fb ?

Rick, I can't help since you're using a windows mix. If you were a pure
linux house, sshfs is the bee's knee's. Once setup by installing the
sshfs bits, making a root of the tree /sshnet directory, and generating
and exchanging the ssh keys, its as simple as this 3 liner in
my /etc/rc.local.

su gene -c "sshfs gene@shop:/ /sshnet/shop"
su gene -c "sshfs gene@lathe:/ /sshnet/lathe"
su gene -c "sshfs gene@GO704:/ /sshnet/GO704"

And anything I have user rights to is 100% available to me here on this
machine. If I need root to do something, its as close as sudo. In fact,
my sim install here, uses the /sshnet/GO704/home/gene/linuxcnc/nc_files
directory as its nc_files directory, so I can edit from here, a file on
that machine and then go run it. That link does NOT go away if I reboot
one of those machines, or this one. No samba|cifs|nfs finickiness, it
Just Works(TM).

I might add that because of the keys exchange, I am known instantly on
those machines without having to enter my user pw, a simple
 "ssh -Y shop"
And I am logged into my home dir on the machine that runs the toy mill.

Whats not to like?

I outlawed winders on my property when I was still using an Amiga as my
work machine. That was in the 90's. But I've been pure linux since
about 1999 here. I don't miss the licensing headache called windows a
bit.

Cheers, Gene Heskett

Command line work in the shop would never happen, I'm pretty sure they
would tell me to get F$%*ed, and go sit in the break room ;)

The router issue wasn't a big deal, I was leery from the start due to

it kicks her out of her session, luckily she had to leave early
yesterday so I did the reboot, and it still gave us hell this morning. I

[Emc-users] Changing From Mach3 to LinuxCNC questions

2016-03-29 Thread hubert
I am purchasing a used CNC Mill using Stepper motors and a BLDC Spindle
motor. It currently is using Mach3 with a usb smooth stepper
interface. I found out I will either have to purchase Mach3, or as I
prefer convert it to use LinuxCNC. Since this is a much higher
performance system than I currently have, I am thinking something such
as Mesa 7I76-6I25 PNG KIT might be just the ticket to enable the
conversion. I would appreciate comments/suggestions.

Your choice of Mesa cards are a good start. You can't go wrong with
that. You will have enough IO to do all the work you want on a mill.

Re: [Emc-users] Changing From Mach3 to LinuxCNC questions

2016-03-29 Thread Viesturs Lācis
A month or so ago I converted one desktop mill from mach3 to LinuxCNC
for a customer. It was using some USB-based controller with mach3, I
do not know, if that is the same smooth-stepper or maybe something
else. What I did:
1) installed Mesa 5i25 card in PC case;
2) installed new SSD drive in PC case and unplugged the old one (this
is my VIP customer - gave him a possibility to convert back by
replugging 3 cables as it took quite some time to finetune the config
- machine is used for jewelry-like stuff, so max precision of machine
is required and he was picky about any imperfections);
3) reused the parport breakout board - part of the decision was
laziness to rewire - in this case I just had to replug the LPT cable;
4) flashed 5i25 with firmware for G540;
5) adjusted hm2-stepper sample config for particular machine;
So it was 2 new pieces of hardware, but you most definitely can reuse
the harddrive. It seems that after proper tuning of machine parameters
people are getting good results with built-in parport, but I wanted to
stick with what I knew would work great and the 5i25 is not that
expensive...

Why do you have to buy Mach3 if it was already controlling the machine?

Do not know about OP, my client received machine with mach3 that was
not licenced... So you may guess if it actually worked correctly.
Especially with with g-code files of 300K+ lines.

Clearly there is a lot more to this VFD thing than I thought.

I got a 4hp Huangyang VFD from that eBay. Communicating with it via
RS485 turned out to be very easy with the hy_vfd HAL component.

This evening I connected it to the lathe, and found that the lathe
would turn at very low speeds, but then it was acting like the
clutches were not working.
But it had all worked OK before, and nothing had changed but the VFD.

So I fitted the castor-frame to the lathe, and rolled it away from the
wall so that I could see the motor shaft.
Very bizarrely the motor was running weakly at low speed requests,
then getting even weaker at higher speed requests, and basically
stopping at a VFD-displayed 50Hz and 3.5A.

Well, at least it wasn't a clutch problem..

So, I reset the VFD to factory settings, and tried running from the
operator panel. Lo and behold it all worked fine, and at 100Hz I get
the full 3000rpm spindle speed that the lathe is rated for.
Oddly, the display at 50Hz / 1440 rpm _still_ only says 3.5A.

Setting it back to RS485 didn't bring back the wierd behaviour, it was
running happily at 3000 rpm in high range and seemed to make decent
torque down to 80rpm in low range.

So, I have no idea what was wrong at first, but maybe it got unhappy
being powered up with no motor when I was setting up RS485.

I am also very baffled why the same motor would trip out a 3hp VFD at
12A and 1500 rpm but run at 3000 rpm at 3.5A with a 4hp VFD.

There is a very strong correlation between current and load/torque.

Probably because of wrong parameters. Flux weakening by lowering voltage is
possible, to move in the opposite direction by applying full voltage at lower
than rated speed is possible but is probably not a very good idea.

Re: [Emc-users] Keep getting Following Error in World Mode

2016-03-29 Thread Danny Miller
OK it's definitely from moving joint 0 or 3 while in Joint mode. Then
I'll get Following Error as soon as I go to World Mode.

No problems from moving joint 1(y) or joint 2(z). So it's surely a
problem with the 0/3 being linked under gantrykins.

I'm enclosing the .hal/.ini, if that'll go through. Not too long.

Without ANY sort of move involved.

Any idea what would cause that?

This might just be a side-effect of how the command and feedback pins
are connected in HAL.
What pin is connected to axis.0.motor-position-fb ?
