Nearly any modern car will have provision somewhere on the engine for
a block heater. It is also likely to be in the right place too. Have

Nearly every engine ever built sinces the 60's, I would say. Even my Volvo
Amazon had one, and they really were built during the 60's.

Webastos have a pump if they're supposed to heat up the coupe too and not
 only the engine.
My VW Touran has a Webasto without a pump, they have a burner as standard
equipment because the TDI's doesn't come up in temp without it when it's
cold outside and as an extra you can buy a timer or remote for preheating.
My brother's Volvo XC60 has a Webasto with pump, while he gets a cozy seat
I get a frost free wind shield at its best. On the other hand, the car is
at working temp after one or two minutes of driving if the heater was on.

Like Andy says, what's your car? There will be a heater.

Why on earth would you want to run it under Windows? It comes as a

If you don't have a separate machine to run it on, then install it on another

[Emc-users] ISO Torrent?

2011-06-27 Thread Peter Loron
Hello, group!

Question for all: Is there any interest in making the ISO available via
torrent?

When I first went to get EMC2 a few weeks ago, I looked for a torrent.
Finding none available, I went ahead and downloaded the ISO directly.

Recently I (and others) helped a list member get the ISO by setting up a
torrent for him.

I would be willing to help seed a torrent for the ISO, and would also be
willing to initiate the see if the folks who actually do the releases
are not interested.

Discuss!

2011-06-21 Thread Peter Loron
Version control for the win. I'm a huge believer in git, but there are
others that will work fine, especially for single user stuff.

You can also use something like Clonezilla to make an image of the
existing drive, which can be restored if disaster strikes.

I plan to reinstall. I'll do a complete backup of the file system first,

Is there anything else that would need to be restored, assuming this is

My reasons for the reinstall are 1) To get updates to work again, 2) Any
kernel updates will require setting grub to use the RT kernel, 3) In the
future this machine may be administered by people with little Linux
experience and I'd like updates to go as smoothly as possible.

 Thanks for any advice.

Put the files you want in there.
Re-install your machine, then put drop box on and get your

Then if you want, un-install dropbox.

 Or use ubuntuone.

 Both have 2G for free.

Don't consider this 'safe storage'. I am sure it can be hacked, but
it is convenient for non-'secure' data.

Dropbox is very handy. But, as Jack said, don't put anything sensitive

I've been looking at those routers. Glad to hear they're a good piece of kit.

I know nothing about how the internal speed control works on the router, but
assuming you could simply feed a variable voltage or resistance in there, then
what you suggest would work fine. You could do it cheaper if you roll

My Hardinge lathe uses Hall limit and home sensors. The Z axis target
magnet is small and mounted such that there is minor protection from
chips. There is a small gap between the magnet and sensors when aligned.
If chips are in the magnet area, they get wiped off, but not too small
such that small chips don't bind in the gap. the magnets are weak enough
to have largesh chips fall off. The trip location accuracy only needs to
be within about 2 or 3mm because, in my case, the home sensor is used in
conjunction with the screw encoder index, which should be accurate
to .002mm or better. What I like about Hall sensors is that they are
machining fluid proof and will practically never wear out or change the
trip point or behavior over time. I tend to think using mechanical
micro-switches is silly, but a lot people use them to good effect. The
Hardinge Z axis uses a Hall sensor with magnet in a micro-switch
 housing:

These are mounted in a location well protected from chips, but the area
is not sealed from coolant, which is fine because the sensors don't mind
 fluids.

They tend to be expensive, but it should not be too difficult to machine
a barrel and pot an IC sensor with leads into it

Yeah, I'm going to roll my own...I have a pile of Allegro sensors here.
Also, retail on the Honeywell sensors is probably more that I've got

I think that you would have problems with inconsistent triggering

 Hi, Pete.

The wiki and the email archives will give you a sense of the general
 disfavor of laptops.

Since you already have the D610 on hand, download the EMC2 LiveCD and
run the latency test, preferably for longer than you contemplate a job
would take on your mill. Look at the numbers and compare to the latency
test results on the wiki (and add them to the wiki, pretty please!)

You don't say whether you plan to use steppers or servos. The choice may
make the difference if your latency test numbers are moderately high.

 Good luck!
