Re: [Enigmail] Problems with Mint Debian
I went through most of those procedures where appropriate, disabling the gnome keyring etc. but to no avail. It's possible I was not doing everything correctly - most of it was strange to me. However, without changing anything else at all, I installed Claws Mail, told it to use agent in the settings, and it worked perfectly- so the obvious answer is to use Claws mail - certainly for anything encrypted, so that is what I will do. Thanks for the help, anyway. [Enigmail] Problems with Mint Debian
Having used it before with no problems, I am getting an error using Enigmail/GnuPG2 on Thunderbird running under a new install of Linux Mint Debian Edition. All appears welluntil I come to send a message and I get the error message:- "GnuPG reports an error in the communication with gpg-agent (a component of GnuPG)." "This is a system setup or configuration error that prevents Enigmail from working properly and cannot be fixed automatically." I have had similar errors in the past concerning gpg-agent, but Enigmail has gone on to work correctly - presumably using the Linux key-ring? I'm not too technical, so I'm not quite sure why this error hasarisen when it never did before. Can you tell me where I should start looking for an answer - LMDE, Enigamil, or GnuPG? I'm afraid I can't work that out - I'm not very technical, sadly. As I no longer need the keys, I just removed them. When I ran the delete command, it removed the public keys but not the private ones, so the two that had public keys only partially deleted (?). I got interrupted in the middle of doing it, so I wasn't paying enough attention - but there was a message telling me to run the secret key removal command (can't remember it) first. As I had already run the delete, it was too late. I thought I would then just delete the whole thing using the Enigmail Key manager, but they refused to delete. I restored them from the back up (the public parts only seemed to re-import) and then using Key Manager to delete them altogether. Not being very technical, I have no idea why this should be but thought it would be of interest, and that someone might know why? I'm not currently connected to the GPG4Win forum, so I can't say if it has been mentioned in there. The deeper reason is, that GnuPG 2.0.27 errors out if it detects weak digest algorithms. They are used on older keys, having the MD5 hash. See the release notes for 2.0.27: http://lists.gnupg.org/pipermail/gnupg-announce/2015q1/000362.html This behaviour prohibits loading the key list, as Enigmail respects the exit code of GnuPG and thinks, there is a serious error and no usable output. So, this is no bug which was introduced with Enigmail 1.8, you would certainly get the same behaviour with 1.7.2. As a first aid, this can be fixed by the following procedure: Open Enigmail - Preferences. Ensure the Advanced tab is shown. If not, click on Show Expert Settings and Menues. Select the Advanced tab. Put the following in the field Additional parameters for GnuPG: --allow-weak-digest-algos OK, I'll use that for the moment whilst I work out which of the keyring have the old hash. I won't go on at length because we're off topic in this list, but when I tried the full installer yesterday the installer would not let me install GnuPG without Kleopatra. As Kleopatra used to regularly completely hang on my system, I'd rather not do that - albeit it was better the last time I tried it. Samir told me about vanilla installer and I have used that successfully. The rumors that Gpg4win does not work on 64 bit Windows may come from two issues: - GpgEx - The explorer extension was not available for 64 bit Windows until one the last versions (~ 2013). - GpgOL - The Outlook extensions does not work with a 64 bit Outlook. Everything else works in the same way as all other 32 bit Windows applications continue to work on 64 bit Windows. I was using 64bit Outlook with GPG4Win, and GPGol was unusable - also causing the system to hang completely. Perhaps it was GpGol that was causing the problems with Kleopatra - I don't know. All I can say is I tried every version as they came out and none would work at all, until the last version I tried - which was usable most of the time. However, I abandoned it because (and this *is* on topic) messages written using GPGol caused an error whereby Enigmail on other systems couldn't handle the output from GPG4Win correctly. It was a while back and my old brain can't remember precisely what the problem was (we discussed it at the time, so perhaps you remember?) - but GPG4Win was not being precise about something that Patrick was. It was about that point I got tired of Outlook (again) and switched finally back to Thunderbird/Enigmail. The behaviour regarding unwanted encryption of newsgroup postings was reported by Matthew Woehlke on this list on October 1st, but I cannot reproduce it. I have recently discovered the reason for it, and have been trying it for a few days to make sure the behaviour did not recur before adding a comment to my original message - as no-one had replied I wasn't hurrying. I believe it was due to having ticked Use PGP/Mime by Default in the Thunderbird account settings, since I never use in-line PGP. I did not have any other defaults set so, logically, I assumed the PGP/Mime setting would only be invoked when I manually selected signing or encrypting later on. These were the settings I thought I had used with the old versions of Enigmail and they did not have the problem, so when I set it up again, I did the same. I unticked all the Use PGP/Mime by Default radio buttons in all my accounts, and the odd behaviour went away, and has not returned. Now, of course, when I do want to sign or encrypt I have to select PGP/Mime manually as well, as the setting has reverted to using in-line as the default. I must say that the new Enigmail is much more unnecessarily complicated to set up and to use than the old one - and I cannot see the reason for the changes. I'm sure there is one, but the new, cumbersome selection options in the Write window headers are a step in the wrong direction. The reason is that we wanted to be more explicit about what is going on. Whether or not an email is encrypted (or signed) depends on several sometimes contradictory rule-sets. The most important are: * global defaults * account-specific defaults * per-recipient rules * whether or not you reply to an encrypted mail In previous versions of Enigmail, you could enable encryption manually, and yet your email was sent unencrypted (or vice versa). We thought that this is difficult to understand. If you have suggestions for how to improve the menu entries, we will gladly listen. I just think that they have been made unnecessarily complicated. In the Thunderbird account settings the default settings are fine, except that enabling Use PGP/MIME by Default causes the problem about which I wrote initially if enabled on it's own - so it probably should be greyed out unless one of the other default items is ticked. If it's a bug and shouldn't act as it does, then obviously it needs fixing. I cannot see that the options under After application of defaults and rules are of any use at all - if the defaults and rules have already been applied these two options seem irrelevant to me - maybe there are reasons I cannot see? The per-recipient rules make sense to me, and if they override all other settings should create no problems. The Thunderbird Write window is unnecessarily confusing and duplications abound. I cannot see any point whatever in having the Enigmail encryption and signing settings menu that drops down from clicking the Enigmail button, and I would remove it altogether. The drop down at the side of the button only needs to have on/off toggles for Sign, Encrypt, and Use PGP/MIME - for people like me to override all previous default other settings, or lack of settings, in my case. That's all I ever used to use, except for a couple of per-recipient rules. The overcomplicated drop down is more or less duplicated in the Enimail Menu bar button in the Write window, so those could be removed to simplify matters - particular the strange and even more unnecessary submenus that pop out from the first three items. I'm sure there are reasons for some of these - but I cannot see them. Basically, what I am saying is that it was fine before it was altered and has been for years. You said that, before, In previous versions of Enigmail, you could enable encryption manually, and yet your email was sent unencrypted (or vice versa). We thought that this is difficult to understand. I cannot understand this as I never noticed a problem before. However if it was a bug, then it just needed fixing. Perhaps, I'm missing something though - I'm getting a bit old now :-) Regards, Bob signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature ___ enigmail-users mailing list enigmail-users@enigmail.net To unsubscribe or make changes to your subscription click here: https://admin.hostpoint.ch/mailman/listinfo/enigmail-users_enigmail.net
[Enigmail] Odd behaviour of Enigmail 1.7.2
I've just started using Thunderbird/Enigmail again and am seeing an odd thing. I have Enigmail set to neither sign nor encrypt mail unless I manually tell it to. When replying to a newsgroup messageor e-mail, the Enigmail Key Selection window pops up. This is apparently random - but may be time related as I've only noticed it when I've been typing for some time. Both the message recipient not valid, trusted or not found, and my Newsgroup signing key number are shown top left (even on e-mail), the send encrypted box is ticked, and to get the message to send it is necessary to tick the force not to encrypt box - although encryption is not selected by me, nor shown to be selected in the drop-down menus. It just happenedwhilst I was typing this, and still included my newsgroup key, even though I'm not using my newsgroup e-mail address. I clicked Forced not to encrypt and then a couple of moments later the window popped up again, even though force not to encrypt was still ticked. Any ideas what's going on - is this a known bug?
