I only saw your message today, but I still want to say: wow, and thank
you for this effort!

The author of "Send Later" and I worked together on making the two
add-ons compatible to each other. The result is the following beta
version of "Send Later":

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/send-later-3/versions/5.1beta1

The next release of Enigmail will contain some changes that will make
the integration between the two addons more future proof, but these
changes are not necessary for Send Later to work correctly with all
Enigmail versions since v1.2 (which was released in 2011).

Citing from the linked source:
>And here’s the thing… If Enigmail is called before Send Later, then the
message is encrypted with the recipient’s public key, at which point it
is no longer decryptable by the sender. Then, when Send Later is called,
if the user decides to cancel scheduling the message, e.g., to go back
to editing it, the message is now /completely unreadable to the sender,
and its contents are completely lost./ And that is why…

Isn't Enigmail/GnuPG encrypting the message with both the recipients and
the senders key?

Okay, thanks for the info. I found this
, but it does not really
explain why it is impossible for the two to interoperate. And the
workaround “temporarily disable Enigmail, restart Thunderbird, schedule
the messages that you want to schedule with Send Later, and then
re-enable Enigmail and restart Thunderbird again” does not sound
attractive to me.

Thanks, I did not know that. But as far as I understand, this “send
later” is different from the add-on “Send Later”. The first simply
saves the message in the outbox to be sent when you select “Send Unsent
Messages”. The second schedules messages to be sent automatically at a
certain time (of course this only works as long as Thunderbird is running).

Okay, sorry for mixing that up. I cannot reproduce the message once I
dismissed it so I was writing from memory. It does seem sensible that
one add-on cannot deactivate another.

So why does he blame Enigmail by name?

As for Thunderbird? The 'updates' are far enough apart the it is an ESR.
Security and patches only.

And before we get reminded that is area is for Enigmail I'll back out.

Ypu have a nice day.

It's not Enigmail as much as it is Thunderbird. They seem to have "new
and improved" releases quite frequently, and almost as frequently one
or more of the add-ons doesn't work until the author of said add-on
makes some change to keep up with Thunderbird. One of the few
complaints that I have about T-Bird.

I am not a tech guy or a programmer type so I have now idea just what he
has to constantly 'fix'. Or just why it is Enigamil that he blames.
Enigmail releases are very stable and major releases are not done often.

This is becoming all too frequent with Thunderbird add-ons, unfortunately.

The developer of the extension "Send Later" has said that it is too much
work for him to keep his extension compatible with Enigmail.

When in the compose window, the write window, pressing 'Ctrl + Shift +
Enter' invokes the built-in Thunderbird function to 'send later'.

Also there is an extension named "Send Later Button" that combines these
keys into the function of a 'click me' button.

Enigmail does not check for compatibility with _any_ other add-on, nor can it
deactivate other add-ons. The message you saw most likely comes from upgrading
Thunderbird.

[Enigmail] Enigmail vs. Send Later

2016-05-13 Thread Elias Assmann
Hi List,

Recently, Enigmail notified me that it is no longer compatible with Send
Later and deactivated the latter. In the first place, why is it
impossible or impractical to combine the two?

I find both Enigmail and Send Later useful, and would like to continue
to use both of them. If this means that I cannot sign or encrypt
messages that are Sent Later that would be acceptable, but I think it is
a shame if I have to choose between the two extensions.
