Re: [e-users] edje_cc error when compiling Webkit/EFL

2010-10-14 Thread haithem rahmani
Hi,

I contacted a Guy that did some patch for EFL/directfb asking him about his
opinion since he is working on settop boxes too et guess what he told me.
Since our hardware is going to embed a *GPU*, I'm less and less
interested in directfb support.

and I think that the 3D will be the trend starting from the next year even
in the Settop Box World.

So personally I drop all my requests regarding the DirectFB/EFL requests.

you may kill it at any time :)
regards.

Hey Guys don't do it. already the GTK people already dropped the directfb
backend from GTK-3.0.
I'm working to port the EFL/directfb + ewebkit for set top boxes.
I think for set-tops what EFL/directfb is offering is good.

I didn't test yet but I may deliver some updates and fixes to the directfb
engines.
don't consider it as promesse :-).

Nah! I don't care about DirectFB or software-16 anymore

Rasterman I remeber I gave you such a promess  some times ago but really I
 didn't find time.
but now I'll work to convince my boss to switch to EFL instead of GTK.
then I think I'll find the time for that.

People are doing that basically because nobody cares, or nobody cares
to the point to make it worth. The STB argument is a recurrent one,
actually I revamped the directfb due a client that was using it, but
the contract is over and thus no motivation to do it anymore.

If you look why STB used directfb, the reason was that they had stupid
layered hardware that to make use of acceleration of each plane, with
x11, would be a major PITA (although possible), then they all went to
the directfb solution.

But nowadays the world is moving to a saner solution, based on
opengl-es 2 as people want effects and there are lots of driving
efforts like google and apple TV. With these becoming common the
price drops and nobody will care about fixed layer acceleration
anymore and Evas already supports opengl-es.

Another problem with directfb and its users is that most are unlikely
to give stuff back. I know we did contribute everything back, but not
every company is like that and people tend to build piles of patches
on top of EFL that never went public. This reduces upstream motivation
to maintain it even more :-)

So let's put like this: if directfb engine is patched to make it pass
all expedite tests, with proper map support and all, then we may keep
it, otherwise it will be dropped.

why?. seriously. what is it that x11+opengl doesn't already do a LOT better
(ok - video overlay/underlay support, but that IS done via things liek xv
anyway, and as such the future of such things likes in putting video rendering
via the gpu and textures - that's where it's all heading, with MYBE
video overlay used for fullscreen mode only rendering).

I didn't test yet but I may deliver some updates and fixes to the directfb

well i won't be killing them off - BUT unless dfb is brought up to spec, and
gets a maintainer, it will be. and then you'll be stuck with some product using
an engine that is now no longer in upstream at all in any way, so 100% burden
goes to you (when we redo the engine api or whatever).

putting my free time on such engine :-P

OTOH, if people are looking to keep directfb/software-16 you can
always contact us and we can bring them up to shape so raster will not
 nuke them ;-)

if someone... good and dedicated does take either under wing and brings them
up to scratch i'm willing to change my mind - but until then they have
targets painted onto them. i won't nuke for 1.0 - but documentations says that
they are in bad shape and are not to be relied on (read the README).
