Re: [EVDL] Tesla plugs into new market with home battery system (backup foolishness)
It just requires people to share, and to value that efficiency enough to engage in collective collaborative activity. Could refer to a public utility or a private one that is regulated well. That was what I meant, but I wanted to frame it broadly - a distributed utility functioning in the most efficient manner. However that actually would work... As far as knowledge, there is plenty if you seek it, I have done enough research into newer testing methods, and the design and application of Li ion cells, in many of their forms, that I do not need to make stuff up. I did not make faith based comments. There are already ways to get 10+ year life used in medical applications. The reasons for failure are unrelated to charge rates and current levels. You can extrapolate to larger size cells and test the larger cells in a reasonable length of time. Testing can now adequately describe the expected cycle life of cells and compare among them validly. Even to the level of detecting the effect of additions of small fractions of electrolyte additives. Design by the best people is now going to produce far better results than we are used to. It is now more of a design problem - but too few people are able to design properly, because they use old information based on inferior testing. However, the pessimist in me says that if such a movement ever really got going in a big way, the commercial power producers would call in their lobbying chips and have at it. If ISPs can get laws passed against cities developing internet service, surely utilities can get laws passed against co-ops providing electric service. I DO believe that some Li ion cells can be operated to last at least 10 years, some types probably 20. There is science to back this up. New testing with good correlation to reality. Maybe you and I are just using different language for this, but we need knowledge, not faith. We can get real knowledge of whether some (many?) kinds of lithium batteries last 10-20 years. However, it'll take 10-20 years. Accelerated life testing is useful, but it's not the final answer. Bernard Wilchusky, Central Florida Future ] The annual showcase, hosted from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the atrium of Engineering Building I, challenged outgoing students to design new and inventive solutions to real-world problems. Student groups, ranging in size from three to six members, labored for months to make creations such as a portable drone charging platform, a low-cost mode of transportation and even a new stress-testing suite for use in aeronautical design. Groups were required to find materials and fund for their projects, many of which cost up to $2,000 in parts alone. [image] Senior mechanical engineering students Garrett Chapman, Chris Harris and Zachary Loparo stand in front of their invention, the Human Assisted Electric Vehicle. (Photo: Bernard Wilchusky, Central Florida Future) For members of the Enhanced Alternative Transportation team, the goal was to design a safe and cost-effective mode of transportation. Their invention, a teardrop-shaped tricycle called the Human Assisted Electric Vehicle, had a final cost of $4,000, said Caleb Amy, a member of the team. We designed this vehicle to bridge the gap between cars and bicycles, said Amy, a senior mechanical engineering major. It's a lot cheaper than a car, but it also protects you from the weather. It can cruise at about 40 mph, has a range of 50 miles, and it protects the rider from the rain. Not to mention, it's pretty comfortable. The team behind the Supply and Command Roller for an Autonomous Multicopter set out to make a mobile, remote-controlled charging platform for long-range drones. Its device, a large platform flanked by twin photovoltaic panels, boasted a small processing suite nestled between its four wheels that would allow operators to control and move the platform remotely. The best way to think of it is as a big, fancy charging station, said Tom Czachur, a senior aerospace engineering major. It's like if your phone charger had wheels and a big, fancy solar charger, except it doesn't plug into a phone, it plugs into a hexacopter. The Hypersonic Environment Testing team designed a particolored metal rig that placed airplane components under the kind of thermal, mechanical or sonic stresses the team would experience during regular operating conditions. Michael Sanchez, a senior mechanical engineering major, said that the testing rig was the first system that was able to test all three stresses simultaneously. Our testing rig simulates hypersonic flight conditions, Sanchez said. We're trying to simulate mechanical loading, thermal stress and acoustic loading. Our testing for that last one is really loud; you need earbuds to be near it. It's the equivalent of being next to a really, really loud music concert, which is like being at Mach 5. There will be six exchange locations scheduled. https://xappprod.aqmd.gov/lawnmowerexchange/Program/Sechedule to REGISTER NOW OVERVIEW LAWN MOWER LEAF BLOWER OVERVIEW SCAQMD has two annual programs that help clean the air through the exchange of lawn and garden equipment: In the spring, residents can turn in an old, operable gasoline-powered lawn mower and purchase a new cordless electric lawnmower that produces zero emissions at reduced cost. In the summer or fall, commercial landscapers and gardeners operating with the South Coast Air Basin can exchange old, noisy, high-polluting backpack leaf blowers for new backpack blowers that have significantly reduced emission and noise levels. An older gas-powered lawn mower can spew more pollution into the air in a single year than a car driven more than 22,000 miles. All the gas mowers and leaf blowers that are turned in for this program are scrapped and the metal recycled. To date, SCAQMD has scrapped more than 55,000 highly polluting gasoline mowers, removing almost 114 tons of smog-forming pollutants from the Southland’s air. Similarly, the total number of old, polluting leaf blowers that have been scrapped exceeds 10,000. [EVDL] EVLN: Chargemaster offers free EV loaner2 Milton Keynes UK businesses
http://www.mkweb.co.uk/Free-electric-car-loan-Milton-Keynes-businesses/story-26395794-detail/story.html Free electric car loan to Milton Keynes businesses By MKWeb | April 27, 2015 [image http://www.mkweb.co.uk/images/localworld/ugc-images/276490/Article/images/26395794/9937908-large.jpg Businesses in Milton Keynes are being given the opportunity to test out electric cars ] Milton Keynes Council's electric vehicle partner Chargemaster Plc is offering a free electric vehicle loan service to Milton Keynes businesses. Chargemaster has a small fleet of electric vehicles (EV) that can be loaned to companies (and their staff) within Milton Keynes to allow them to experience an electric vehicle for themselves and to see what the benefits of electric motoring are. A Renault Zoe and two Nissan Leafs are available for loan to MK companies. No charges are levied and companies have the free use of over 200 charging points in the Milton Keynes area including 56 rapid chargers which recharge these cars in less than 30mins. Loan cars are available typically for two weeks at a time and are subject to availability on a first come first served basis. Chargemaster require copies of drivers' driving licences but otherwise there is no formal paperwork to complete. This is a great way for companies to sample the benefits of EVs for themselves without having to buy a vehicle first. With over 20 electric cars on the market from manufacturers such as BMW, VW, Audi, Renault and Nissan, there is a lot more choice within the EV market. Over the next five years it is predicted that EVs are likely to become the mainstream vehicle with virtually every car manufacturer producing either plug-in hybrids or pure electric EVs with increasing range of over 150 miles. Electric vehicles provide huge benefits such as low fuel costs, quieter engines and low emissions which will improve air quality in the city. There are also considerable economic benefits for both companies and employees with very low benefit in kind taxes. Re: [EVDL] Battery Types
There were some nice Power vs Energy density figures awhile back for the various battery types. Most resembled fat right parenthesis )s as battery energy was traded for power and vice versa. The lithium ion curves have evidently shifted to greater power and energy levels. Lead Acid was in toward the (0,0) corner. It was either DOE or the ABC (battery consortium) that put together some circle diagrams where each spoke addressed a characteristic about a battery. One spoke was safety, another cycle life, another $/kwhr, etc. A standard was set for each characteristic and a red line connected the battery performance points relative to the goal for that standard. If the battery had a high potential to ignite, the point was in toward the center to zero. If low, the red line could be out away from the center. If the battery met all the goals, the red line was out away from the goal line. It was a quick way to visually see how well the battery was performing. The recent link to the Jeff Dahn video on battery testing indicated that different battery electrolytes could dramatically change the energy density and cycle life. With the rapid pace of development and new tools for measuring battery performance, any chart could become outdated quickly. As is often said here: There are lies, damn lies, and battery statistics. Who did the testing? Were they objective or were they more interested in helping the manufacturer sell batteries? If you really want to know a battery, you have to test it, work with it, and try it out in your application. Does it work for you? Welcome to a Smorgasbord of battery types and info. Re: [EVDL] EVLN: Enclosed human-electric hybrid spins around the UCF campus
That looks a lot like the ELF http://organictransit.com/ product of the company I just started working for. I was previously a beta tester for them. It is a good design. I have been hired to develop new products, but I hope I can add to their manufacturing, purchasing and other efforts as well. Since I am an employee you have to take what I say with an open skeptical mind. I do still have the beta I bought, and commuted 25 miles each way with. (25 miles takes about 1kWh at 48VDC nominal on my older machine. I degraded my LFP batteries by charging them fully in the hot sun, and have not bought new packs. Now my commute is too long. I think their current packs are better than the ones I have, but I have no personal experience with them. The ELF they sell now is better than mine in a number of ways. Fit and finish, some suspension improvements, many small manufacturing details are better now.. Mpre options are available. It's effective and fun in an urban setting. It is easy for car drivers to see, and car traffic seems to treat you well - I have found it makes things go smoother if you wave people around you when it makes sense - some people just will not cross a double yellow without permission.. In suburbia you may want to find more of the 25mph roads, but it really gets you across intersections, up to speed from a dead stop, and up hills in a way no HPV only bike can do. On 25mph residential streets you will almost never hold up car traffic. Re: [EVDL] Battery Types
ken via EV wrote: Is there a chart that shows all batteries types and the number of cycles, energy density, heat runaway, etc. There are lots of charts on the web. Many of them tend to be written for marketing purposes; so watch out for the accuracy and spin of the data. Another problem is that things like life require a lot of expensive time-consuming testing. People who have generated such data tend to be reluctant to give it away for free. I'm an old-school show me type. I've been lied to so many times by battery salesmen that I prefer to test it for myself. Rarely do batteries perform as well as the marketing claims. -- Don't worry about people stealing your ideas. Re: [EVDL] EVLN: Enclosed human-electric hybrid spins around the UCF campus

The entire vehicle cost about $4,000 to produce. Velomobiles are wonderful, as are electric-assist velomobiles. I'm not so sure they'll well suited for American suburbia...but there are definitely those for whom such a vehicle is perfect. The thing that surprises me, though, is that price tag. It's not that hard to spend that much on a recumbent trike, let alone add a fairing and an electric motor, and velomobiles generally start at that price and up -- potentially way up for high performance ones. Anybody know any more about this one? b -- next part -- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
