[Evolution] NFS folder on network attached storage

2014-08-22 Thread John
Evolution 3.10.4
Ubuntu 14.04

Hello, and many thanks for an excellent open source PIM.

I have been using it for a number of years and find it most convenient.

I have 2 PCs both running Ubuntu, and both connected to my lan, which
also includes a Qnap NAS.
I just make a symlink from ~/.local/share/evolution to an NFS folder on
my NAS as in:

ln -s /home/john/nas/mydocs/Personal/evolution evolution

I then set up the email accounts on each PC and all seems to work fine.
I seldom open evolution on both computers at the same time.
I also use syncevolution-server to sync to my android devices.

Should i be linking the evolution folders in .cache and in .config to an
NFS folder also?
I attempted to do that just now, and Evolution opened in first run mode
and asked me to set up an account. When i restored the original
evolution folders in .cache and .config, after a restart all is okay
again.

Re: [Evolution] NFS folder on network attached storage

2014-08-25 Thread John
Thanks Patrick,

Sorry, you are quite correct in that i use POP mainly.

Well, i will continue the way i have had it for the last few years, and
just symlink the .local/share/evolution folder, as it seems to work with
few problems over the NFS, and allows me to keep the accounts, calendar
etc in sync between the pcs. Its not mission critical stuff, and if it
all goes horribly wrong i have made occasional backups!

Is there any info as to what the different folders are for?
Documentation only seems to show their location.

@adam

Woah there, snide comments about members being pathologic, is hardly going
to help anyone.
I came to this list looking for advice, which i received and if you noticed
my most recent reply to Pete's post a number of hours ago, i took on board.
Being kicked by a self opinionated prig is not what i came here for. I
continually promote open source software, especially for it's stability and
it's (usually) helpful and friendly community. If something goes wrong i
won't be running to you for advice, so calm down, and have another coffee.
Looking through your recent posts i see a thread of aggressive behaviour.
You should probably find a more suitable outlet for it. No need to rant
because others don't have your knowledge or ability.

Well, its probably my bad, but Evo reported that the message was sent, i
saw the progress bar reach 100%.
Apologies for flaring up, but as Zan said, "instead of telling people
not to muck with it, just give them a link to what they need for doing
it correctly."
A lot of us are just humble users looking for a bit of information, not
on some mission to break stuff and then blame the developers for it.
I am most pleased and thankful for Evolution, Linux and open source
generally, but i give and expect courtesy when communicating with
others, and won't tolerate bullying.

[Evolution] "Generating message list" won't go away -- possible database corruption

2016-10-06 Thread john

RE: evolution 3.20.5

evolution has stopped working correctly -- likely something happened
when using very slow connection when traveling.

folder properties indicate all e-mail still there.

have tried correcting any database errors with $ sqlite3 folders.db
"pragma integrity_check;" on folder containing folders.db

program returns an "ok"

I then renamed folders.db to folders.dbb, killed all other evolution
related tasks, and restarted evolution.

No luck, and newly built folders.db much smaller than folders.dbb

Have made folders.dbb folders.db, redid the integrity check shown above,
and restarted evolution; sill have generating message list. Most all
commands on drop down menus do not work. Cannot even get Help About to
work.

Would appreciate some help on getting evolution back running correctly.
Right now working from webmail applications to receive and send email.

Thank you,

Problem affected all accountants (3 POP, 1 IMAP). Some subfolders under
InBox have 100s of e-mails. I left evolution running while I monitored
with webmail to see if my clients were contacting me. Suggestion to
rename mail subfolder to mail.old and restart evolution got things
working correctly. However, I need to know how to get mail back from
mail.old.

Which type of account, how big are the folders (how many messages),

Hi,
you forgot to install debuginfo packages I asked for, thus this is
rather semi-blind guess, but from what I see then there are like 3
accounts waiting for their credentials (can be keyring related), and
the main thread is completely busy with drawing the spinners in the
folder tree (what a pita that gtk+ spinners are that resource
expensive), you might see higher CPU usage too, which is caused by
these spinners, thus gtk+ issue. I do not see any thread which would
show the ongoing 'Generating message list' operation, but it can be
that it's waiting for the account to be connected. Once upon a time,
the spinners were that resource expensive that they blocked other
operations which required idle processing starve. The evolution(-data-
server) code received some changes to workaround this issue. Maybe you
found another way to reproduce it. Nonetheless, it doesn't explain why
it worked with your changes below.

Second, I renamed the mail subfolder to mail.old.  I restarted
evolution, and everything started working correctly.

Good.

Third, how do I recover the e-mail in all the subfolders under InBox?
 These contain much essential information.

If you renamed the ~/.config/evolution/mail, then it's okay, because
that folder contains only some configuration files. The mails from On
This Computer/ are stored in ~/.local/share/evolution/mail/local/
folder. More can be found here:
https://help.gnome.org/users/evolution/stable/data-storage.html.en

By the way, do things break again if you rename the mail.old/ back to
mail/?

[Evolution] evolution 3.20.5 fails again with lockup on opening "Generating message list"

2016-10-20 Thread john
This is second time this failure has occurred in two weeks. Following
instructions I received from this list two weeks ago, I did the quick
test, go to ~/.config/evolution and as a starter rename the 'mail'
subfolder to something else, like 'mail.old', and then start the
evolution. This did not work then and it did not work with this
afternoon's failure.

What worked two weeks ago was to rename ~/.local/share/evolution/mail to
~/.local/share/evolution/mail.old. Evolution started up correctly, but
I had lost all my existing e-mail. I completed recovery of that lost
e-mail, by copying each folder under mail.old to mail.

Everything was fine until this afternoon, when a new version of Ubuntu
base was installed. When I rebooted to complete that upgrade, evolution
failed.

Version of evolution is 3.20.5. There is no debug package for 3.20.5 .
Please note that up until two weeks ago, 3.20.5 had worked perfectly,
indeed best version of evolution to date.

In case anyone is interested, OS is Ubuntu 16.04 64-bit.

What are next steps?

Re: [Evolution] Problem sending+receiving emails

2017-03-18 Thread john
I believe that this problem is caused by quality of the internet
connection and is not directly related to evolution version or device.
I was traveling most of this past week and saw the problem come and go.
Once here at home bases with a 50/10 Internet connection, problem never
occurs unless ISP has problem.

[Evolution] Help with recovering e-mails

2022-01-13 Thread john

I'm sure it's been covered before, but I have failed to find it.

I've just made a clean install of Fedora 35 and then Evolution 3.42.2
(3.42.2-1.module_f35+13513+2c5bddf4) .

I then realised I had forgotten to backup evolution!*!!

All my local e-mails contact etc are still in the /Home directories, but
the newly installed Evolution just wants me to set everything up again.

How can I get it to use the information in the /Home directory rather
than start again?

Many thanks

[Evolution] Unable to Send/Receive as User, Can as Root

2007-03-09 Thread John Clements
Last weekend, with my Fedora Core 5 Linux computer running Evolution
2.6.3, I was unable to Send/Receive. That button was gray, all other
functions such as reply, new, etc worked. I do have the same account
set up as root and that works. I did delete the account as user and
re-enter information, same as on the root account. I did check
permissions of .evolution and subdirectories in user and root and they
are either 755 or 777. I've been using this user account for about a
year with no problems. The only thing I see possibly is the mail set up
with POP to receive and SMTP to send, and authentication is via password
and when the user account was deleted and then re-entered, upon signing
on to the ISP, it did not ask for a password.

This is a mystery, any ideas?

[Evolution] Recreating lost folder

2007-03-29 Thread John Horne
Hello,

I'm using Evolution 2.8.3. When I upgraded my PC from FC5to FC6, I moved
all my .evolution directory, the .gconfd stuff and so on. It seemed to
work fine; I could see my folders, mail and so on. This was some time
ago, and I have only just noticed that a folder is missing when I invoke
evolution. It (the folder) does exist in my .evolution directory, it
contains 'HEADER' files, and has a 'cmeta' and a 'summary' file.
However, it does not appear when I invoke evolution.

Does anyone know of a way of making the folder appear? I do not want to
lose the mail. The only thing that I can see that may be causing a
problem is that there is no 'summary-meta' file which exists in the
other folders. I have no idea about evolution internals, so I don't know
what these files are for.

Thanks,

John.

Re: [Evolution] Disable keyring prompt

2007-05-31 Thread John Stile
It really is annoying.

The best I could do was limit it to once per x session.
I made a link:
~/.kde/Autostart/gnome-keyring-daemon to /usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon
It asks once per login.

When it is not running at all I have to type in my password every time I
check for new mail, which is even more annoying.

You could use a little script.
This is a link to a perl script I wrote.
http://stilen.com/scripts/perl/duplicate_mail_cleaner.pl
It doesn't actually delete until change $debug from 1 to 0.
It sure would be handy for this to be in current evolution.

[Evolution] problems with coolkey smart card and OWA account

2007-10-14 Thread John H.
1.I can use evolution to check regular OWA accounts
2.I can check OWA with coolkey with firefox at https://www.foo.bar.gov
3.I CANNOT check the https://www.foo.bar.gov site with OWA support in evolution.

Evolution prompts me for my PIN, as I seem to have coolkey being used
by it, when I click "preferences" in evolution. I then go to add a
new OWA account, but when I click "authenticate," despite putting the
same user/pass from firefox, it says invalid user/pass.

What to do? I know that in firefox if I allow it to prompt me, there
are two certificates on the smart card(only one works), is perhaps
evolution choosing that one on accident? Can I get evolution to
prompt which cert I want to use?

This is an F7 machine.

I've just been speaking with people in #evolution channel and bhareth

I debugged what was happening, and basically, despite the fact that
evolution is importing the certs from the smart card, the OWA portion
is behaving just like OWA behaves when the smart card is not present

[Evolution] hot keys

Is there a hot key I can hit to go directly to the Inbox of my default mail

I'm trying to get away from Windows and to do that I have to learn how to

confused as to whether my problem is with not fully understanding gnome,

[Evolution] Mail filter case-independent regex

2008-02-06 Thread John Horne
Hello,

Does anyone know how I can enter a mail filter rule which will match a
string case-independently? I'm trying to get a rule to look for the word
'summary', in any character case, in the subject line, and then put the
msg into a folder. I tried using '(?i)summary' but it didn't seem to
match at all. The only other way I could think of doing it was by
putting all the letters in a class - e.g. '[sS][uU][mM]...'. That too
didn't work though.

Running evolution 2.12.3.

Thanks,

John.

FYI -
Using a 'regex match' with 'message header' seems to have sorted the
problem out. I used '^Subject:.*SUMMAR' to cater for 'summary' and
'summaries'.

[Evolution] Excessive DNS queries with 2.22 and exchange ?

2008-05-07 Thread John Affleck
I'm seeing what appears to be evolution generating many, many
back-to-back DNS queries (netstat -t | grep domain | wc -l returns ~9600
connections in TIME_WAIT). The reason I'm blaming evolution at this
point is the result of one lucky fuser on a connection and the fact that
stopping evolution results in the number dropping dramatically (down to
0 after 30 seconds or so).

Is there some way to narrow this down ? I've unchecked as many plugins
as I can.

Running 2.22.0, straight from the source w/ evolution-exchange on a
SLES9-ish system.

Thanks!

[Evolution] Disable filtering when moving messages

2008-06-24 Thread John Horne
Hello,

Most of my incoming mail is filtered into various mailboxes by
Evolution. However, if I want to move a message back to the 'Inbox', it
gets re-filtered straightaway to the mailbox I'm trying to move it from.
Is there any way to stop this happening? Should filtering occur when
explicitly moving/copying messages?
It happens with Evolution 2.22.2 (F9 system), but not with version
2.12.3 (F8).

Thanks,

John.

So after this thread caught my eye (having suffered from mbox corruption
one time too many), I decided to convert all of my 'local mail' to
maildir format folders. So I did the following:
- Added a new account with 'Maildir-format mail directories'
- Pointed it at an empty top-level directory.
- Did right-click 'Copy..' on the top-level folders under 'On This
Computer' and selected the new account as the target.
- Deleted the copied folder once I was happy with the result.

Now I have everything in maildir format and things like folder updates
and searches are peppy again.

This took a little bit for the 2+ G of mail I've managed to accumulate,
but worked pretty much flawlessly. I tried a couple of the script
solutions, but they had about a 90% success rate and I wasn't going to
convert all 100+ folders thru mutt (which seemed to be the only other
completely robust solution available).

The new 'account' I created lived outside of the .evolution directory
(~/Mail, in my case). I assume there's no reason not to create it under
.evolution, but I don't think I'd recommend it.

I should probably be clear - I did not convert Evolution's "local
storage" to maildir - I still have mbox files under
.evolution/mail/local that evolution uses as an Outbox for example. I
created an entirely new folder tree as what Evolution thinks of as a
separate account (with an outgoing mail server and everything). I
suspect that evolution will do nothing to 'manage' the new folder and
it would have to be treated as an entirely separate entity for backup or
migration purposes.

[Evolution] evolution issues: slow and frequent crashing

2009-01-29 Thread John Schmidt
Greetings,
I'm experiencing frequent issues with Evolution 2.24.3. I'm running on
Ubuntu 8.10. and using IMAP to read mail on a Lotus Notes server.

The main problem is it's extremely slow when doing functions such as
"Generating message list", "Fetching summary information", "Storing
folder" etc...
The other problem is when selecting a group of messages and trying to
move them to another folder will peg the cpu, forcing me to reboot.

This problem seems to have started in the last couple of evolution
updates. I've searched the archives but didn't find anything helpful.
I'd appreciate any pointers anyone can provide.
Thanks,
John

Are you on the same LAN as the server? Very slow for me, too (albeit, exchange)
when accessing remotely from my laptop -- especially if it has been a while
since I checked in with that computer. Very fast with the desktop on the LAN.

I'm on the same LAN. I'm running evolution on my desktop and T-bird on
my laptop. No problems w/ the latter goirng through the same network
paths. As I said, it seems to be some recent change that's triggered
this behavior. It used to be very fast, now it's quite slow.

I've always had problems opening very large IMAP folders (one on

freeze. In this version the folders can take forever to "scan for new
messages" (typically just sitting at 0%), so much so that Evo often
starts a *second* scan, presumably because the server poll interval
has run out. Note that killing Evo and restarting immediately solves
the problem, which rather begs the question of why Evo can't just do
whatever it does without user intervention.

This is exactly what I'm seeing. IMAP database size is 6.5 GB. Takes
forever to "scan for new messages", "fetching summary information" etc...
Switching folders takes 20 seconds or longer. Pretty hard to use it
with this level of performance.

[Evolution] Importing settings

2009-04-22 Thread John Aldrich
I looked in the FAQ, but I didn't see the answer there... is there any way
to import my KMail configuration into Evolution? I see where I can import
individual mailbox files, but I'd like to import my KMail configs, including
filters, etc as I have a LOT of filters to move mail into folders, etc.

Also, if possible, I'd like to do a "bulk" import of all my folders so I
don't have to recreate them one at a time when I'm importing messages into
Evolution.

I'm looking at switching to Evolution as I had some issues this morning
with KMail acting up, and Evolution was working. Also, it appears Evolution
has improved since I last looked at it (around RedHat 6 or 7. )

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables

See the pkg-config man page for more details.

What am I missing or doing wrong?

Any help provided will be greatly appreciated.

[Evolution] Evolution and smtp port OTHER THAN "25"

2009-09-13 Thread John Glenn
My ISP, 1and1.com uses an smtp (send) port OTHER THAN the Evolution Port
25.

I asked 1and1.com tech support for help and received the following URL

http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/confirm/evolution-list/b177d3c3e3496ba2eb1e1505932af450a4190bb0

Excellent resource for this problem.

The process

Determine what smtp port your ISP/mail provider uses (usually found on
the provider's site), then

1) Launch Evolution
2) Select Edit > Preferences
3) Select account to modify and click on Edit; Account Editor appears
4) Select Sending Email tab
5) Under Server Configuration, the Server line should read normally
(e.g., smtp.)
APPEND A COLON (:) AND THE PROVIDER-REQUIRED PORT ID smtp.1and1.com:587o
the entry reads something like
smtp.:123
6) Try leaving the Security > Use Security Connection "as is" *
7) Leave Authentication "as it"
8) Leave Izanami "as is"
9) Leave Remember password "as is"
10) Click the OK button
11) Test function by sending an email via the provider's service to
confirm it goes through.

* Step 6 - you _may_ need to try SSL or TLS encryption.

You most likely need to enable SMTP auth.

Adam,
I have tried all of those variations including mail.XXX.com:587,
smtp.XXX.com:587 and restarting the machine between changes,
unfortunately they have not worked. Originally mail.XXX.com worked
for years before Verizon made the changes Monday. My email server is
at my old ISP that we have used for years. A call to them revealed
that mail.XXX.com is the proper syntax and if the email client needs
port 587 then it resides with the client and the host isp.

On the windows side Eudora 7 and outlook express made the conversion
fine but if tried thunderbird and it exhibits the same problem.

An interesting problem.

That makes sense; there probably is no "smtp.mail.XXX.com"; have you
tried just "smtp.XXX.com"? Or looking up what the setting should be.
The port syntax XXX.YYY.ZZZ:### does work. Our shop runs SMTP on
TCP/21212 and specifying smtp.USUSUS.com:21212 works in evolution.

Re: [Evolution] Changing Port 25 to Port 587

2009-10-21 Thread John Maxwell

Kojak,
I am back in town, took my netbook with me to see if it could send
email. I fired up WiFii radar, found a node and was sending and
receiving email. I am now working with the default firewall to open port
587 to get it to work on my Verizon ISP. Most frustrating.

John,

If your Email is at another ISP, you can retrieve with pop from
anywhere, but some ISP's don't allow Relaying, and therefore sometimes
block smtp to another ISP. You will have to use the SMTP server from
your active ISP. Or another option is using a google account to send
email. This way you can always send through the google smtp servers.
or have your emails for your domain hosted by a hosting company as
godaddy, domaindiscover

Don't know if I'm clear with my explanation.

Looking at some forums, it seems this bug has been occurring for YEARS!

[Evolution] Default From address stopped working

2009-11-17 Thread John Lange
I recently upgraded from OpenSUSE 11.1 to OpenSUSE 11.2 with the
accompanying upgrade to Evolution 2.28.0.

I (like a lot of people) have several email addresses. All of them are
set to forward to one central (GMail) account so that all mail comes
into once place.

When I reply, I want my name, email and signature to match whatever
address the mail was sent to.

In previous versions of Evolution, if you replied to an email where the
"TO" address matches one of your mail accounts, then the reply "FROM"
automatically was set to that address.

In the current version of Evolution, the reply "from" address is always
set to whichever mail account received the email regardless of the "to"
address.

Is there a setting that controls that behaviour? I'm probably not using
the right search terms so my google turns up a lot of auto-responder
stuff but nothing on that topic.

Let's try a little role-play... You, the developer, have created a GUI
app that regularly corrupts its own index files. You have been told
about the bug some time ago and done some research, now you have turned
up to a meeting with your PM claiming to have fixed it.

PM: "OK what's the fix?
Developer: "The user has to open a terminal and delete all these files
called ~.xyzblahblah* every time it happens"
PM: "You're not listening. That's a workaround, not a fix. You can't ask
GUI users to run around rm'ing things! So when will you have it fixed?
Developer: "But it is fixed."
PM: "You're still not listening! What agency are you from?"
Developer: "But... it's easy - all they need to do is..."
PM: "Look, the files called ~.xyzblahblah* don't even exist in the
current version, so you don't even have a workaround, let alone a fix.
What agency?"
Developer: "But..."
PM: "FRIDAY, 5pm, no workarounds - a FIX!"

Re: [Evolution] Default From address stopped working

2009-11-18 Thread John Lange
Unfortunately, due to the invalid SSL certificate (can gnome really
not afford a valid cert?), my current location blocks the gnome
bugzilla so I can't read that but report.

But, suffice to say this change doesn't make much sense. I'm trying to
think of a situation where, by default you would want to reply from a
different address than the mail as went to but I can't.

I suppose as an option, there could be a "always send messages from
the default account" check box. That would probably be a useful option
for some people.

Even gmail always replies from the address that the mail was sent to
(though you have to set it up).

Anyhow, when I get to a computer where I can read bugzilla I'll chime
in on this one and hopefully it gets fixed.

That's exactly what I just said.

If the mail is forwarded by the mail system, then the original "TO"
address will be the institutional address and the reply should come
from that address, not the mailbox it ultimately ended up in.

This of course depends on how the mail was forwarded but generally
speaking, if it was done by a rule or the MTA (Exchange, postfix
etc.), it will preserve the original "TO" line and the reply's "FROM"
should match that.

It can be a bit confusing but I think we agree and it's what Evolution
is no longer doing.

I now understand why this change was made. My only comment would be that
I don't think it's normal to have the exact same email addresses on
multiple accounts. There would normally be one authoritative place for
mail to sit.

So in your case if your using the same email address for local and imap
perhaps fetchmail should be grabbing the mail from imap and delivering
it to local but on the other hand I don't see why the user shouldn't be
able to do things this way if they want.

That being said, your other example, where the same mail is delivered to
two different email addresses (both configured in Evolution) is probably
a much more typical example.

Yes.

This one needs more discussion.

Evolution has an option for "Default" account. My first intuition is
that this account would be used as the default account for composing and
sending email if nothing else matches. So something like:

3) If neither of the above is the case, the use the default account.

I admit it is debatable whether it should use the selected account or
the default account but if you don't use the default account for this
purpose then for what?

If you consider my scenario, I have several active accounts that never
get mail delivered to their inboxes (they are just there for setting the
correct "FROM" address and signature). So my selected account is always
the same (the gmail account).

However, I _never_ use the gmail account as the "FROM" address. It's
always one of the other configured accounts, one of which I have
selected as the default. My preference is that this is the one that
should be used if neither of #1 or #2 matches.

And one final clarification, the concept of the "FROM" address is
separate from the actual sending/delivery of the mail.

It is common to have several "Mail Accounts" setup that have the
"Sending Email" part of their configuration empty (this supports
composing or replying to mail under scenario #2 above as I described).

So in all situations, if the selected account has no "sending" method
configured, use the default account for sending/delivery.

I'm sure you well understand that but I just wanted to mention it so it
didn't get forgotten.

BTW, are you going to reopen 524497 or create a new one or ? I was
going to put these comments there as well.

Re: [Evolution] Cannot empty trash

2009-11-22 Thread John Ross
Well,
I do not wish the developers to take offence, but when one refers to the
FAQ and the bug report mentioned therein, it goes back to 2001! Hence my
shock-horror and the 'what if this was in the commercial world'
scenario. How long is long enough?

In the meantime I have taken to starting evolution from the following
script:

#!/bin/bash
export LANG=C
#shutdown if running
evolution --force-shutdown
for each in index data cmeta; do
   find ~/.evolution/mail/local -type f -iname "*.$each" | xargs rm
done
rm ~/.evolution/mail/local/folders.db
evolution --component=mail

It takes a couple of seconds longer for evolution to start, but I don't
mind: it solves the problem.

Though I hesitate to suggest it, since the real fix is apparently so
difficult to achieve, perhaps the workaround could be built in to the
app, as a 'Delete index files on exit' item in Preferences. At least
then users who aren't comfortable at the command line would not have to
suffer bloating Trash folders.

Sorry to jump into someone elses thread, but this reminds me of a

I'd like a "paste as plain text" option for Evolution.

SHIFT-CTRL-V. I end up pasting into a text editor first and then recopy
& paste to remove Evolutions crazy formatting.

BTW, this helps somewhat with the above question but does not create a

I personally believe software should strive to be both friendly for
unsophisticated users while making power users happy as well.

So, on that note, if you look at the format options of something like
OpenOffice Calc, it gives you exactly what you describe above. That is,
a long list of predefined popular options, plus the ability to tweak to
exactly what you want.

> > Are there really that many more variations of date

In every programming language I've used, plus things like OpenOffice
mentioned above, the number of formatting options for dates and times is
mind numbing. So, I would have to think that "yes", there are many-many
variations. Given that opensource software strives to be international
friendly, flexibility is important.

If you look at "man date", you will see the supported formats for dates
which seems to be pretty widely supported in other languages such as
PHP, Perl, etc. Evolution should use the same formaters which are more
than likely part of some standard C library.

As a side note, it also includes "%x" which falls back to the localized
date format, probably a wise default for Evolution.

Sorry, this is a bit of a troll but...

If you were using OpenSUSE, you could just search the build service and
then "one-click install" the latest version which would automatically
add the repository and install the package.

http://software.opensuse.org/search

The point being, if you really need to use packages before they are
pushed into the official distribution, OpenSUSE has very easy mechanism
for that (one-click).

Ironically though, 2.29 is not yet a package on the system so I guess my
advocacy is self-defeating. :| Should be available in a few days though.

[Evolution] Blanks In The System Tray

2009-12-16 Thread John WIlliams
Using Evolution v 2.26.3 under KDE/Mandriva 2009.1. I have a large
number of anniversaries with pop-up reminders. Works fine.

Except ... after each reminder has been dismissed, a blank space is left
in the systems tray between today's date and the network status symbol.
Each reminder adds a further space there until the systems tray reduces
the amount available for other apps running to a very small amount.

The spaces left by these obsolete reminders can be identified by
hovering the cursor over them. They can be removed by re-booting the
desktop, but I don't want to do this if I can avoid it.
Ending/restarting Evolution does not remove the spaces.

Is there any other solution ??

MFC-665CW on A4 paper.

When I print out emails, I lose the top line and the first two left-hand
characters of each line. With most other applications, there are
facilities to set up custom margins, but not, apparent to me, is there
such a facility in Evolution.

Somewhere I had seen that Evolution picks up margin settings from Gnome,
which I also have installed (but primarily use a KDE4 interface). There
is no apparent module available to me to do likewise (no
"gnome-print-whatever" to use).

Is there some other place I can set the margins?

[Evolution] evolution-exchange 2.4.1 instability ?

2005-10-07 Thread John Affleck
I'm having a heck of a time getting the exchange connector component
to stay happy. All I really need it for is a shared calendar, but I
seem to get the following a couple minutes after startup:

libedata-cal-ERROR **: file e-cal-backend.c: line 294
(e_cal_backend_finalize):  assertion failed:  (priv->clients == NULL)
aborting...

I've rebuild three times, blown away my gconf and .evolution settings,
and run it under gdb, and I jut can't seem to make any headway. I
have a stack track (which points to the assertion above), but that
doesn't really help. I seem to be able to provoke it more by trying
to get the clock-applet to show it's view of tasks and appointments.

Can someone give me a hint as to where to start looking ? I think I'm
going to blow everything away again and try to get 2.4.0 to work. I
haven't had much luck with that previously, but now I understand how
to flush out the gconf entries, maybe I'll have better luck this
time...

Ah, good. I've had the same issue with the clock-applet (and the
alarm-notification as well). I'm kind of glad I'm not the only
one.

Excellent. This certainly seems to work much better for me.

I still don't get my Exchange calendar in the clock-applet, nor do
I get alarms for Exchange calendar appointments, but at least I can
see my calendar again :).

[Evolution] how to check OWA w/evolution-connector + security device

2005-10-15 Thread John H.
hi friends

I have evolution-connector working fine to check owa mail on a certain site.

however, there is another site i need to check it with, one that
requires authorization of a security device, which comes on all
military IDs these days.

It's an activcard usb reader. And you can install the acgold
software, and then, in mozilla/firefox, under advanced/security
devices, you add a new PKCS module, and choose
/usr/local/acgold/lib/libpkcs11.so

it works, when I go to a DOD site or https://webmail.nmci.navy.mil
it prompts for my card PIN, which I input.

For some reason nmci mail no longer works in linux through the
browser, while those DOD sites do. I get an http 401 error.

Is it possible for evolution/connector to use that libpkcs11.so module
and check mail on https://webmail.nmci.navy.mil?

As far as I understand, it's just standard OWA after you get the
certification from ID card from reader.

[Evolution] exchange connector does not support hyphens in global catalog server name

2005-10-18 Thread John H.
evolution-connector-2.4.1-1.1.fc4.nr

I can check my mail fine, but I got, from the school, the global
catalog server name

it's

foo-mail.univ.edu

it saves that in the server name box, but I keep getting a timeout,
and it says it cannot connect to
mail.univ.edu

I am assuming this means foo- is being ignored.

[Evolution] evolution-data-server crashing

2005-10-25 Thread John Stile

I've had terrible problems since upgrading to gentoo's:
 evolution-exchange-1.4.0
 evolution-2.4.1
 evolution-data-server-2.4.1
Downgrading isn't fixing the problem.
Shortly after starting evolution, I get the error:
--
The Application "evolution-exchange-storage" has quit unexpectedly.
You can inform the developers of what happened to help them fix it.
Or you can restart the application right now.
---
The application tries to restart and fails.
I tried to get debug info, but the file is basically worthless.
The strace was worthless as well.
--
I couldn't find a good how to on cleaning out all traces of evolution
from my home directory.
Does a tool or document exist?
That would help to rule-out and backup my old configs.

--
The exchange server fails to authenticate most of the time, but not
always. It seems that right after creating the initial account, it
works for mail, but not the calender and address book.

--
I would love some feed back on this.

The application tries to restart and fails.
I tried to get debug info, but the file is basically worthless.
The strace was worthless as well.

I couldn't find a good how to on cleaning out all traces of

Does a tool or document exist? That would help to rule-out and

alarm-notification with exchange calendars is broken for a couple of
other people, too. http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=316710
has the full story. I got mine working by hand-modifying
.gnome2_private/Evolution to include the URI that the
alarm-notification daemon was actually looking for.

[Evolution] shutdown doesn't shutdown, evolution-exchange-storage quit after suspend.

2005-11-12 Thread John Stile
I love evolution, but when I exit evolution 2.4.1 or when it crashes,
there are always left over processes. In order to restart evolution,
and have it work, I jump through lots of hoops, but these steps don't
work all the time. I run:
  evolution --force-shutdown
  bonobo-slay
  gconftool-2 --shutdown
  /usr/bin/oaf-slay
  killl -9 `ps -elf |grep evolution |awk '{print $4}'`

These steps don't work when I suspend the laptop at work, take it home,
start the vpn, and then start evolution. I always get this error:
The Application "evolution-exchange-storage" has quit unexpectedly.
Once in a while "evolution-exchange-storage" won't quit, but it will
repeatedly ask for my password, and never let me log in.

In order to get past these errors, the only solution I've found is to
log-out and log-in again. I would kill for a more elegant solution.

I'm using gentoo packages:
  evolution 2.4.1
  evolution-webcal 2.4.1
  evolution-exchange 2.4.1
  evolution-data-server 1.4.1.1

[Evolution] clear search tool w/o starting Evolution?

2006-01-08 Thread John Cunningham
Is there a config file that I can edit that will clear the search tool
without having to start Evolution? I'm running into a problem with a
known bug, where Evo crashes during an alphanumeric search in an IMAP
mailbox. The problem is, when I restart Evo, it crashes again before
I have a chance to clear the search tool.

I'm running Evolution 2.0.4 on FC3.

Thanks,

John

Hi My name is John McFall and I just joined the list. I sent you a
question about your recommending me a PCI card for my machine carrying
Fedora so that I would be able to send\receive email on my wifi network
with the linux machine being the lead machine in the network. You sent me
this message to Marcos Pinto, which I am sure I should not have received.
ThanksJohn

Subject: [Evolution] Sent file too large

Evolution is giving me this error:
Failed to appened local `Sent' folder: cannot append message to mbox
file: /home/markybob/.evolution/mail/local/Sent: File too large
What can I do about this, short of deleting my emails or moving them?
I need to be able to easily search through my emails as I currently
do. Is there a way to make evolution with Mail-dir format for Sent,
like it does for my Inbox? If so, how, and will it convert my Sent
mails? Any other suggestions?
The file is 2G and the filesystem can indeed handle 2G+ files. I'm
running kernel 2.6.13 on Debian sid with reiserfs.
Thanks,
Marcos

I see the same behavior with evolution-2.4.2.1 on gentoo.
I notice that 'vmstat 1' shows the 'block out' column constantly high.
If I kill evolution and restart, initially it acts ok. I created a handy
alias to kill evolution: alias killevo='evolution --force-shutdown ;
bonobo-slay; gconftool-2 --shutdown'. I do not use virtual folders.

[Evolution] 2.4.2.1 and html mail

2006-02-07 Thread John D'Ausilio
I'm very happy with Evo 2.4 now that exchange integration is working
well (I even have my contact list!) .. but one thing I havn't been
able to figure out is how to disable display of HTML mail. 2.2 had a
configuration checkbox in mail prefs, but I've not been able to find
anything equivalent for 2.4 .. anyone have any ideas?

[Evolution] Can't synchronise Calendar or Tasks with Palm IIIxe

2006-02-27 Thread John Halton
Hi,

I'm using Evolution 2.4 and am trying to sync it with my Palm IIIxe
using gnome-pilot (version 2.0.12). I'm using a serial cradle, and
running PalmOS 3.5.2.

I've managed to get the Palm set up in the Gnome Pilot configuration,
and have set up the relevant conduits to "Synchronize". The Contacts
folder has synchronised correctly. However, Tasks and Calendars have not
synced.

The HotSync log on my pal doesn't reveal any problems - just lists all
the folders that have been synced (EAddress, ECalendar, EToDo etc).

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Many thanks,

John

[Evolution] IO goes crazy

2006-02-28 Thread John Stile
After starting evolution and running the filters or searching in a
folder, evolution will cause "Blocks received from a block device" (bi
column in vmstat) to max out and it will stay high until I kill
evolution.

Filters are only set to act on the INBOX and it only seems to happen
when I access the Exchange server using the IMAP protocol.

Is this a known issue? Are there any fixes?

Thank you.

[Evolution] Evo 2.6 - adding a 'move' icon

2006-03-27 Thread John Horne
Hello,

I have just installed Fedora Core 5, which includes Evolution 2.6.0. One
of the things I have noticed (from FC4, not sure what the version of
Evolution was) is that there is no 'Move' (or 'Copy') icon in the
toolbar. There used to be as I regularly used it. I can see the 'Move to
folder' option under the 'Message' drop-down menu, but would prefer an
icon.

Does anyone know how I can add the icon back? I can see no configuration
option to allow the toolbar to be modified.

Thanks,

John.

[Evolution] Getting an Evolution 2.6 rpm

2006-03-28 Thread John Moore

Where can I download an Evolution 2.6 rpm?  Tried the SUSE area of the NOVELL website but Evolution is not even listed as a product choice.  Googling the question didn't help much either.  If anyone can give me a URL that could accomplish this, I would appreciate it.  I am running SuSE 10.0

Hello,

Many thanks for the reply explaining this. Whilst on the one hand I can
understand the developers moving the icons out if they felt they were
not used, but on the other hand I must agree with others that providing
a configurable toolbar would be better than just removing icons which
some people use and others don't. However, you state that doing this is
not practicable due to the changing state of the toolbar and the overall
complexity. I cannot argue against that since I have no idea of what is
involved.

For myself I never use the junk/not junk icons because we have
server-side filtering of spam. I never use the previous/next icons
either.

John.

[Evolution] evolution causes disk to spin constantly

2006-05-08 Thread John Stile
At some point (could be 1 to 10 minutes) after starting evolution, the
hard disk starts spinning constantly, nic and hub blink constantly, and
vmstat shows lots of data sent to block device (bo column). The program
will continue until I get a message that it can't contact the server, or
I kill it, but it will stay this way for hours.

Can someone tell me what might be happening?

I ran Evolution with strace, and when it starts the behavior described
above, these are the lines that rush buy over and over.

Re: [Evolution] evolution causes disk to spin constantly

2006-05-18 Thread John Stile
I solved my own problem.
Cause:
I had a big folder (>100,000 messages) on an Exchange server,
which constantly got more mail from and active mailing list,
and filter run re-counted the folder, which took too long.
New mail would arrive before the re-count could complete,
  and the process would repeat.
Fix:
Now filter moves mail to a Unix IMAP server, and I don't see the
problem (for now).
