RE: Inherited Perms within MultiSite Orgs - 5.5

2002-01-18 Thread Tim Ault

intersting.

i have configured many a Site within an Org, but domain security boundaries
existed between; configuring inter-Site permissions is an obvious and
necessary step.

in my lab, i set up two Sites (within an Org) within a common domain. my
expectations were contray to that which i observed, hense the post.

so.. the rule is "No permissions cross sites."

thanx, ed

No permissions cross sites. That is, the permissions at the organization
level on one site can be completely different than on the other site. Just
because it says "Organization" doesn't mean that it applies to the entire
organization.

I'm confounded.

Scenario:
- Remote Site B introduced into Org; lists along with Site A after
connectors are configured, blah, blah..
- Site A & B both coexist within same NT4 domain--no Trusts necessary.
- Installed Site B using svc acct common to the Domain

Discovery:
After cursory run thru all containers on Site B to set config to match that
of Site A, it is discovered Site B does not display same accts with perms at
Org and Site levels as Site A.

Is something fundamentally wrong in my understanding of basic management of
a multi-Site Exchange Orgs?

RE: Exchange WebMonitor

2002-01-18 Thread Jennifer Baker

Finally got my test lab back. If you edit the anonymous access account
under the directory security tab of the virtual folder in IIS admin by
changing the user to an Exchange Admin it will not fail at the impersonation
command in WMI. I am sure that giving this user less permissions will work,
but I haven't gotten that far yet.

This means access denied. You will need to run it as a privileged

Replication problem?

2002-01-18 Thread Mahesh Bharatsingh

Hello

Is there someone out there that can give any suggestions on the following:

I have an exchange-environment containing several sites. A mailbox deleted
somewhat a year ago still exists in the GAL of some other sites.
I have to get it out, because the person, still working for us is being
transferred to a site where the old mailbox still exists. I can't set the
proper e-mail addresses.

NT 4.0 SP 6; Exchange 5.5 SP4.

Thanks in advance and regards,
Mahesh Bharatsingh

Exchange 5.5, Outlook 2000.

I suspect this discussion is going to head deep into "There are seldom
technological solutions..." country. Please bear with me.

A number of our users are moaning about OoO only sending out one response
per OoO setting. It seems that they send a message to a user near the start
of their three week holiday, get the OoO response, then promptly forget
about this (and the fact that they can view the users calendar at any time)
and send the user mail some time the next week and wonder why the work they
sent never gets done.

As the client doesn't have to be running for OoO to be working (it would be
pretty useless, if it did) I'm guessing that OoO must be handled on the
server somehow. My guess is that Exchange is going to set some kind of
"sent-OoO-flag" Does anybody know if/where this flag is set?

Presuming this is the case, is it possible to write a batch job that ran as
an overnight process resetting these flags to zero, so that you got one OoO
response, per user, per day - which seems like a reasonable compromise. This
would remind users that their correspondents were on holiday, even three
weeks after the last e-mail was sent, but would prevent mailing loops.

(PS I know you can use rules to automatically reply, but the idea of a rule
automatically replying to every message, fills me with a dread fear of mail
loops.)

We must create webFolder if we want to hare ordinary folder within our w2k

Jean-Francois,

We tried it here as well and were very disappointed with the results. It
would have been really good to have a single file-store accessible with
a variety of clients, but alas IFS just doesn't work very well. A real

Exchange 5.5, Outlook 2000.

I suspect this discussion is going to head deep into "There are seldom
technological solutions..." country. Please bear with me.

A number of our users are moaning about OoO only sending out one
response
per OoO setting. It seems that they send a message to a user near the
start
of their three week holiday, get the OoO response, then promptly forget
about this (and the fact that they can view the users calendar at any
time)
and send the user mail some time the next week and wonder why the work
they
sent never gets done.

As the client doesn't have to be running for OoO to be working (it would
be
pretty useless, if it did) I'm guessing that OoO must be handled on the
server somehow. My guess is that Exchange is going to set some kind of
"sent-OoO-flag" Does anybody know if/where this flag is set?

Presuming this is the case, is it possible to write a batch job that ran
as
an overnight process resetting these flags to zero, so that you got one
OoO
response, per user, per day - which seems like a reasonable compromise.
This
would remind users that their correspondents were on holiday, even three
weeks after the last e-mail was sent, but would prevent mailing loops.

(PS I know you can use rules to automatically reply, but the idea of a
rule
automatically replying to every message, fills me with a dread fear of
mail
loops.)

I was thinking along the same lines. Something like the system is gathering

I'm not Ed, but I'll take a swing at this.

Cezar, You want the server to collect mail from an upstream server using
POP3, as I understand it. This quite simply will not work properly. There
will always be cases where mail can be "lost" or misdirected, or can
generally behave in a manner you do not expect. There are solutions for
doing this out there if you do a search, but all the ones I have seen will
tell you in the first or second paragraph of the read-me file that this is a
bodge, a kludge, and it does not and will not work 100% correctly.

I can't see any reason where this might be a good idea, given the
unreliability, because it's always going to be better to either get everyone
their own pop3 account on the upstream ISP server, or to pay for a proper
connection.

We tried it here as well and were very disappointed with the results. It
would have been really good to have a single file-store accessible with

I suspect this discussion is going to head deep into "There are seldom

A number of our users are moaning about OoO only sending out one response

As the client doesn't have to be running for OoO to be working (it would be

"sent-OoO-flag" Does anybody know if/where this flag is set?

Presuming this is the case, is it possible to write a batch job that ran as

pretty useless, if it did) I'm guessing that OoO must be handled on the
server somehow.

(PS I know you can use rules to automatically reply, but the idea of a rule
automatically replying to every message, fills me with a dread fear of mail
loops.)

FW: changing Outlook client mail profile

2002-01-18 Thread Hunter, Lori

I don't do this off-list. You have something to say to me, you can say it
in front of the other thousands of people here.

Had you really read the FAQ you should have cited your resource. Had you
really read the FAQ you would already know what is required to get an answer
to your question. You did not provide that info. I routinely post
questions saying that so and so told me this, I want others to confirm or

Yes, so some of us out here are misinformed, that's why we come to this
list. My colleague may be misinformed, but I do not subscribe to the "I am
right and you are wrong" school of thought. There's a little thing called
RESPECT, which goes a long way when you apply it in the workplace. Unlike
you, I respect my colleagues and their opinions, so I am not going to write
to the list and say "hey, I think my colleague is wrong but can you confirm

clients reconnecting, but I just wanted to check!

I have never had trouble with OL97 or OL98 reconnecting to the server after
a move. Perhaps Sakti just has a bad setup, or bad colleagues. At a
minimum they are clearly misinformed.

Now to your response. You never once said that a colleague had planted this
erroneous information in your head did you? Did you say that you've got
Ed's Move Server method in hand? Er, no. You also said you were about to
go hacking registries which as those of us who have actually read the FAQ
already know, is completely unnecesary. But go right ahead anyway, please,

FWIW (and certainly not to be argumentative) none of my Outlook 97 clients
had any issues finding the new server when I moved Exchange to the new
server using the ECMSM. I thought it was some really cool automagical $h!t.
Perhaps I am easily impressed. I did leave the old server up for a few days
so that people on travel would get back and reconnect. I don't know that I
can come up with the version number of Outlook 97 that we used at that time
though since everyone is now on Outlook 2000 but I know we were supposed to
be at a very specific version of Outlook 97 which was decreed as "good" (in
general not just for moving servers). Although I would be very surprised if
every single machine was at that version.

Need help from fellow Exch2K SP2 Admin

2002-01-18 Thread Hooks, Tim

Hello,
I am wondering if someone can contact me off the list who is running Exchange 2000 SP2
and try sending an email to a particular Exchange 5.5 box in Luxembourg. I can
successfully communicate with this box with a hotmail account and through a manual
telnet session, but fails with Exch2k. The NDR specifies a 5.5.0 error, which I
believe is new to Exchange 2k SP1. I have been stumped by this for a few days. I have
turned up the SMTP logging to maximum and it indicates it is failing on the DATA
command, although is fine when I use this command on telnet. Thanks for your help.

Subject: Orphan Site probem - need HELP!!!

Hi everyone,

I have a real problem that I am hoping someone in this group can help with.

We currently run an Exchange 5.5 organization with about 30 sites spanning 3
NT 4.0 domains, with a few Exchange 2000 servers from the Win2000 forest we
are migrating too. I was trying to consolidate two of the 5.5 sites using
the move server wizard, however the move failed about 90% of the way thru,
and it was unable to move the server back into the original site (where it
had been the only server).

Now in my GAL I have an orphan site, with an empty configuration container.
I can't delete it, and it is preventing the KCC from completely successfully
because several sites seem to think they have info on this (ie. The
tombstone was never replicated). We also can't install any new Exchange 2000
servers into the Org, likely again because the KCC isn't happy.

I've tried installing a new server into a new site with the same name (can't
join as no server is in site), however I can't setup the replication
connectors because our Corporate site thinks it has a connection to that
site already, so removing it has no effect on the GAL. I've also tried
installing a server into a new site, and using move server wizard to try and
move into the orphan site, but it fails as well.

I am at a loss as to what else to try. Microsoft's support site and various
other resources have been useless in this situation, and you all are my last
hope before paying out to PSS.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. I am wondering whether I
can manually set a tombstone thru the raw admin utility, but have no idea
what actually needs to be set.

Thanks in advance.

Public Folder woes...

2002-01-18 Thread Stephens, Tara

I am having a problem with public folder permissions. Here is the
scenario:

We have several conference room calendars setup as public folders. They
use a custom form to schedule appts. There is one person in another
building who schedules the meetings for that building. Yesterday she
had no problems getting into the calendars and scheduling appointments.
Today, she gets access is denied.

She is logged on as herself and using the same machine that she
previously used. I am the only person who has rights to change
permissions. I typically set the permissions via Outlook. The rights
on the folders haven't been changed. They still show that she has
Editor rights.

What am I missing? We are running E2K SP1 on a W2K SP2 server.

TIA

Tara Stephens

RE: OL 2000 Forms and OWA 2000 Forms

2002-01-18 Thread Stephens, Tara

We just attempted this because we have Mac users. (Macs can't use
custom forms except through OWA). Brought in a consultant who knew what
he was doing4 weeks later he still can't make the OWA forms work.
There's no converter like there was with 5.5. I know it's possible to
make the forms work, but not necessarily easy.

Migrating to Lotus Notes

2002-01-18 Thread Sandhya Pai

Our university is forcing us to switch to Lotus Notes that's maintained by
the Central IT Department. Anyone has any experience with this type of
migration? We are not happy about it but have no choice :-( I would like
to get any feedback on things that we need to look out for. We have about
1500 users and are using Exchange 5.5 sp4 on NT 4.0 sp6a server.

Thanks a lot.

RE: POP3 through MS Exchange 5.5 Server

2002-01-18 Thread Benjamin Winzenz

Correct me if I am wrong here Ed. He is saying you don't configure your
Exchange server to pull POP mail. It's not a good idea, and doesn't work
without 3rd party software, and even then, doesn't always work correctly.
If you really need to read mail from an outside ISP, then configure your
Outlook client with the Internet Mail feature. That turns it into a POP
client as well. Be aware that if you choose to do this, all mail you pull
from your outside ISP, will, by default, be moved into your Exchange
mailbox. Not a good idea, IMHO. You shouldn't mix business and personal
mail together. Or, of course, you could just continue to use Outlook
Express for your personal ISP mail, and Outlook for your Exchange mail. You
do the math - figure out which one works best for you.

Outlook 2000, rather than Outlook Express, might do the trick.

Outlook 2000 can be configured with multiple profiles. You could
theoretically have one for your POP3 mail and one for your Exchange mail.
You'd have to close down Outlook fully each time you wanted switch profiles
and you'd probably want to tick the "Prompt for a profile each time I log
on" check box under Tools/Options/Mail Services but this might be what your
looking for.

RE: Clustering Exchange

2002-01-18 Thread Ed Crowley

What is the real cost of planned downtime? Does it
really cost your company anything at all? (Some have
suggested that productivity might actually increase
when e-mail is down!) Does reducing planned downtime
really justify the added cost, a very significant
cost, of clustering, especially considering that
planned downtime can be taken at times when few users
are on the system? It seems to me that clusters for
Exchange seldom can be cost-justified.

Subject: RE: Clustering Exchange

Hmmm...So everyone likes to cut down clustering. I
don't fully agree.

I have worked with it tons, both on the 5.5 and 2000
platforms. It is
more complex, more things can go wrong, many times
'the clustering part
of it' lags behind the other parts of the program,
third party products
aren't always cluster aware and therefore can cause
problems, human
error is much more common because people aren't
sufficiently trained on
it, etc.

But, if you educate yourself on the technology, work
with 3rd parties
that do consider clustering, etc. it is possible to,
first and foremost,
have less planned downtime. That really is one of
clustering's major
benefits. You can deploy service packs, etc. on the
passive nodes while
the active one is still running, and effectively cut a
1/2 hour downtime
situation to 2 minutes (if everything goes well ;-) ).

Also, if the hardware, OS, or a service, goes South on
a system,
failovers happen quite gracefully (given you're up to
date on service
packs) and you will have the service back up faster
than if you weren't
clustered. I've had systems with 5,000 users on them
failover with
minimal reports to the customers help desk...it does
work.

If you're in an environment that has people who know
what they're doing,
and the decision makers above are willing to spend the
money for adding
possibly another 9, clustering can help. If you are
new to the
technology, let others do it - your stand alone server
will run just
fine and will be easier for you to maintain.

If you do go with clustering: Don't do active/active
clusters, and don't
forget that the single point of failure is your
SAN/external disks -
clustering won't save you from database corruption or
external disk
failure.

In your situation it certainly sounds like not
clustering is the right
thing to do. I just wanted to defend the technology a
bit, because I
feel given the right circumstances, it performs as
advertised.

Try running scanpst on the pst file you exported multiple times. I just had

Good morning,

Outlook 98 Exchange 5.5 sp4

We have a resource called OHR10. When trying to access the calendar for
this resource via Outlook the workstation clocks. We have to do a CTRL ALT
DEL to get out of this loop.

We can access this calendar from OWA without a problem.

We have tried to Import the mailbox to a PST but once again when the task
gets into Calendar it clocks the work station. And we once again have to
CTRL ALT DEL to get out.

Does anyone have any suggestions on making this work?

Have a great weekend.

RE: Unable to get to Resource calendar

2002-01-18 Thread Hunter, Lori

Oh!! Sorry. Gotcha. I got a PST created, but now I can't do anything with
it. I have not yet tried Mr. Scharff's suggestion about using a client
other than Outlook. Might try that then, install Exchange client 4.0 or 5.0
and have a look that way. I did the /clean every friggin thing, and it's
still messed up.

The theory is, if you can get a PST that you can look at you can drag and
drop back items individually until one goes wacky on you. That's the one
not to copy. But I can't even get that far with mine.

Good luck Mike - I hate it when my resouce accounts go south.

Address Book

2002-01-18 Thread Vincent Avallone

I am running Exchange 2000 SP1 using Outlook 2000 and 2002 clients.
When I open the GAL and look under the properties of a user I see all
their phone, organization, etc info.
If I go to Phone/Notes there is filed for Business 2.
Where in the world do I enter that info? I can't find it anywhere in
the properties of the user.

I know it's a trivial question, but it would be useful to have all the
info in the GAL

Thanks.

Try running scanpst on the pst file you exported multiple times. I just had

Subject: Unable to get to Resource calendar

Good morning,

Outlook 98 Exchange 5.5 sp4

We have a resource called OHR10. When trying to access the calendar for
this resource via Outlook the workstation clocks. We have to do a CTRL ALT
DEL to get out of this loop.

We can access this calendar from OWA without a problem.

We have tried to Import the mailbox to a PST but once again when the task
gets into Calendar it clocks the work station. And we once again have to
CTRL ALT DEL to get out.

Does anyone have any suggestions on making this work?

Have a great weekend.

Yesterday I helped out some folks who keep blowing a circuit with their

keep this from happening as there isn't enough power for 2 plus all their

said I wasn't asking them, nor did I care what the acceptable answer was.
The problem was A, the solution was B. Any other options will cost money

RE: Gateway Virus Protection.

2002-01-18 Thread Tom Meunier

Don't I remember you saying you moved to Norton a while back? If you own the
corporate suite, go get disk 2 and install the one you already own. NAV for Internet
Email gateways can block by attachment name, type, and subject line in addition to
performing antivirus tasks.

I can't tell what you mean by "on the gateway", so I'm assuming you want to block
*.vbs, *.js, etc. on the SMTP gateway.

2002-01-18 Thread Exchange

Agreed. I am speaking for the few companies that have money to spend,
and say, "Yes, I am willing to pay for that. It's worth it to me to get
the reduced (planned) downtime".

What is the real cost of planned downtime? Does it
really cost your company anything at all? (Some have
suggested that productivity might actually increase
when e-mail is down!) Does reducing planned downtime
really justify the added cost, a very significant
cost, of clustering, especially considering that
planned downtime can be taken at times when few users
are on the system? It seems to me that clusters for
Exchange seldom can be cost-justified.

Subject: RE: Clustering Exchange

Hmmm...So everyone likes to cut down clustering. I
don't fully agree.

I have worked with it tons, both on the 5.5 and 2000
platforms. It is
more complex, more things can go wrong, many times
'the clustering part
of it' lags behind the other parts of the program,
third party products
aren't always cluster aware and therefore can cause
problems, human
error is much more common because people aren't
sufficiently trained on
it, etc.

But, if you educate yourself on the technology, work
with 3rd parties
that do consider clustering, etc. it is possible to,
first and foremost,
have less planned downtime. That really is one of
clustering's major
benefits. You can deploy service packs, etc. on the
passive nodes while
the active one is still running, and effectively cut a
1/2 hour downtime
situation to 2 minutes (if everything goes well ;-) ).

Also, if the hardware, OS, or a service, goes South on
a system,
failovers happen quite gracefully (given you're up to
date on service
packs) and you will have the service back up faster
than if you weren't
clustered. I've had systems with 5,000 users on them
failover with
minimal reports to the customers help desk...it does
work.

If you're in an environment that has people who know
what they're doing,
and the decision makers above are willing to spend the
money for adding
possibly another 9, clustering can help. If you are
new to the
technology, let others do it - your stand alone server
will run just
fine and will be easier for you to maintain.

If you do go with clustering: Don't do active/active
clusters, and don't
forget that the single point of failure is your
SAN/external disks -
clustering won't save you from database corruption or
external disk
failure.

In your situation it certainly sounds like not
clustering is the right
thing to do. I just wanted to defend the technology a
bit, because I
feel given the right circumstances, it performs as
advertised.

'Hope it helps,

hard is it to do,

Forward's for ex-employees problem

2002-01-18 Thread Fred W. Macondray Jr.

Hi All,

I'm moving all the email forward our company has hosted at Mindspring Business to
exchange so that we can fully manage our own mail. I'm trying to decide how to do the
following:

I want to have mail from user [EMAIL PROTECTED] forward to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], but when it arrives I want the email to keep the To: field
intact. I did a test with my account by adding [EMAIL PROTECTED] as a valid
email address for myself, but when it shows up in Outlook the To: field has my name in
it, not the original recipients name.

My boss has about 10 ex-employees email forwarded to him, and I don't want them all to
look like they were actually sent to him.

How can I do this so that the original recipient's email address is preserved?

Thanks in Advance,

Subject: Forward's for ex-employees problem

Hi All,

I'm moving all the email forward our company has hosted at Mindspring
Business to exchange so that we can fully manage our own mail. I'm trying
to decide how to do the following:

I want to have mail from user [EMAIL PROTECTED] forward to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], but when it arrives I want the email to keep the
To: field intact. I did a test with my account by adding
[EMAIL PROTECTED] as a valid email address for myself, but when it
shows up in Outlook the To: field has my name in it, not the original
recipients name.

My boss has about 10 ex-employees email forwarded to him, and I don't want
them all to look like they were actually sent to him.

How can I do this so that the original recipient's email address is
preserved?

Thanks in Advance,

Fred

Outlook 2000 and above IIRC correctly. Before that you had to remove the
Wizard and use the old Inbox Rules feature in order to redirect the mail in
that manner.

2002-01-18 Thread Fred W. Macondray Jr.

Unfortunately I'm in a situation where asking the fearless leader to perform tasks
such as rules is really out of the question. This needs to happen in the background
without him ever knowing how it happens. Perhaps I need to make a contact and have
that forward to him.

Hmm.. this is the hardest part of the job, dealing with higher-ups that demand special
configurations.

RE: Inherited Perms within MultiSite Orgs - 5.5

2002-01-18 Thread O'Brien, Cathy

I'm so happy to hear I'm not the only one that didn't know that until
recently!

I mentioned it to PSS during a call and the support person said yep, it's
that way "by design". In thinking about it, there are some advantages, but
here I was making changes to the Org permissions, thinking they were being
replicated to the other sites (we'd never needed to change things until
then). I sure had to rethink MY understanding of "basic management of a
multi-Site Exchange Org."

Tim.

Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000

2002-01-18 Thread Brian

I have an Exchange 5.5 site to which I joined an Exchange 2000 server.
The mailboxes have been moved and clients all hooked up to the E2K.
The Public folders are all based off of the new server, and no
replication between the 5.5 and 2K servers is taking place.

The Exchange 5.5 server is effectively unused - a drone.

I want to dis-entangle the 5.5 server from the site.
My plan: Un-install the 5.5 server, and convert the site to native mode.
Then remove the computer from the domain and redeploy it.
I don't need the server, so upgrading is out [it's a 266 MHz].

Will this work ??

RE: clustering wireless

2002-01-18 Thread Hunter, Lori

Well said Daniel. The only thing you didn't mention (maybe it didn't happen
to you) is that when you want to stop/start a service for a good reason, the
cluster admin sometimes finds that as a reason to failover the whole darn
server.

exchange + mscs = sleep deprivation

look forward to cluster services failing for no apparent reason, exchange
services not responding properly to actions in cluster administrator,
dubious failover etc etc

in 4 months with the cluster we had plenty of downtime during working hours,
terrible. Since trashing the cluster and using the two servers as seperate
exchange servers in the same site, we've had no downtime, and both servers
are busy delivering mail instead of one just sitting there waiting to not
work when called upon.

while i'm on the subject, does anyone know the correct way to get exchange
databases (particularly the directory i think) to forget that they are part
of a clustered exchange server? . The problem is that the IMS won't install
on a clean, non-clustered exchange server with restored databases from a
clustered exchange server. It throws an error saying the cluster services
aren't installed, so there must be something in the databases that tells
exchange it should be on a cluster.

i couldn't figure it out, so ended up migrating users to another server
using ed's server move method.

dan.

Un-installing Exchange 55 from mixed site.

2002-01-18 Thread Brian

I have an Exchange 5.5 site that I added Exchange 2000 to.

I have migrated mailboxes, Public folders and totally hooked up clients
onto the E2K.
I want to dis-entangle E55 from the site and convert to native mode
for E2K.
My plan: Un-install E55 and remove the computer from the domain and
redeploy if necessary.
There is no replication going on, but MMC still sees the old server
in the Exchange site.

Will this work ?

Unable to get to Resource calendar

2002-01-18 Thread Mitchell Mike

Good morning,

Outlook 98 Exchange 5.5 sp4

We have a resource called OHR10. When trying to access the calendar for
this resource via Outlook the workstation clocks. We have to do a CTRL ALT
DEL to get out of this loop.

We can access this calendar from OWA without a problem.

We have tried to Import the mailbox to a PST but once again when the task
gets into Calendar it clocks the work station. And we once again have to
CTRL ALT DEL to get out.

Does anyone have any suggestions on making this work?

Have a great weekend.

Hate to beat a dead horse on anti-spam, but....

2002-01-18 Thread Boehm, Diane M.

I really need some feedback about some anti-spam products/services. What I
am looking for is if anyone is using MessageLabs and what they think about
them. They claim to have 750,000 addresses that they are cleaning
viruses/spam/porn for, so there's got to be someone on the list that is
using them.

If not, I know there are some folks out there, who like me, are stuck with
McAfee products. Has anyone implemented their e500 appliance solution?
Again, looking for some feedback on the product.

If you would like to share with the list, your thoughts and comments on
either of these, reply to my message. If you don't want to share with the
list but would like to share your information with me, please forward to my
address below. Any and all advice, comments, etc., is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

No. There isn't. Exchange does not do any attachment blocking. It is not

Not exactly - there is a way to have Outlook block the user from opening
certain attachments and that can be configured with registry entries and/or
a special public folder in Exchange. If that's the kind of thing you're

RE: Clustering Exchange

2002-01-18 Thread Ed Smits

Interesting debate on clustering Exchange. We just put in an Exchange
cluster (5.5, sp4, Win2K servers) and I'm slowing getting my feet wet with
the whole thing. In was working from home today, reading the debate, when my
colleague calls me and says our system just failed over (down time aprox. 1
minute). I terminalled in to the servers and discovered an application error
that started the whole thing:

Event ID: 12800
Description:Message processing failed because there is not enough available
memory (8007000E-F2000200).

And this on machines with 4 GB RAM. A check of the KB brings up article
Q193782 which informs me that:

CAUSE
The Internet Mail Service submits a message to the information store, which
in turn parses the addresses to get the corresponding display names. It
detects the corrupted address and generates MAPI_E_CALL_FAILED, but later
this error is overwritten as MAPI_E_NOT_ENOUGH_MEMORY.

The information store logs an Event ID: 12800, and the error is returned to
the Internet Mail Service. The Internet Mail Service detects this as a
serious error and logs an Event ID: 4182, shutting itself down.

Now, I'm not sure why our server was shut down, it is running SP4, and will
have to investigate this further, but I must admit that I am glad that my
management was willing to cluster the thing if Exchange can do this to
itself.

No, actually that's a very clever solution. The messages will continue to
appear to be TO: the original recipient but by setting the Boss as an

Hmm.. this is the hardest part of the job, dealing with higher-ups that

Outlook 2000 and above IIRC correctly. Before that you had to remove the

70-224 Study Materials

2002-01-18 Thread Steven A. Christensen

I intend to certify on Exchange 2000 later this year. I have already
purchased the Sybex Study Guide (ISBN 078212898X). If it is as good as the
Exchange 5.5 Study Guide was, then that may be all I really need. However,
I wondered if anyone might point me toward anything else they found
exceptionally beneficial. I am keenly interested in something which,
although geared toward the exam, will provide total knowledge and be a
valuable resource afterwards. I have no interest in a paper certification
(like one might get using Exam Cram type materials).

Thank you.

server by adding keys tot he registry. I cannot remember the exact keys
and syntax needed to do this. If any of you Exchange Gurus out there may
know what I am talking about, I would really appreciate the memory
refresh.

Subject: 70-224 Study Materials

I intend to certify on Exchange 2000 later this year. I have already
purchased the Sybex Study Guide (ISBN 078212898X). If it is as good as the
Exchange 5.5 Study Guide was, then that may be all I really need. However,
I wondered if anyone might point me toward anything else they found
exceptionally beneficial. I am keenly interested in something which,
although geared toward the exam, will provide total knowledge and be a
valuable resource afterwards. I have no interest in a paper certification
(like one might get using Exam Cram type materials).

Thank you.

Don't I remember you saying you moved to Norton a while back? If you own
the corporate suite, go get disk 2 and install the one you already own. NAV
for Internet Email gateways can block by attachment name, type, and subject
line in addition to performing antivirus tasks.

I can't tell what you mean by "on the gateway", so I'm assuming you want to
block *.vbs, *.js, etc. on the SMTP gateway.

FW: two sites, one org, two domains > AD

2002-01-18 Thread Exchange Discussion Group

I have the current situation:

two domains, one org. exchange 5.5 sp4. Multiple sites, some connected via
IMS Connected Site with directory replication connection over vpn. At
present the vpn only allows smtp traffic. Each side can control only their
own mailboxes (which is fine).

One domain in one country is beginning planning for a migration to AD and
E2k, anticipating but not requiring the other countries to do the same, so
there will be placeholders in the design for them.

It appears we need AD connection agreements with each site, but it doesn't
appear that this can run over smtp. Without that, am I correct in thinking
that AD will see only the 5.5 users from sites with an ADC? And as we
migrate to E2k, the outlook clients on will use AD as the directory, rather
than the 5.5 DS?

Is there a way around without requiring opening the VPN?

Yes, that would be relevant wouldn't it? I would need to find the solution
and test it to answer that question. It's probably something that an

A better description of my forward issues

2002-01-18 Thread Fred W. Macondray Jr.

Hi All,

Thanks for your help so far. In trying to create a test model of what I'm trying to
do, here's what needs to happen.

First note that the boss actually doesn't have an exchange mailbox, Exchange forwards
his mail to an external pop account.

So this is what needs to happen:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I need to find a way that will preserve the original From: address as well, but I'm
having trouble figuring this out.

I just tried creating an account that forwards to my personal POP account, but the
From address gets changed so it looks like it's from me and not the original sender.

Thanks in advance,
Fred

I recommend the "Mastering Exchange 2000 Administration"
by Barry Gerber.
He covers it all, and has some good insights.

I does spend quite of bit of time with installing Windows 2K
and DNS [you have to get it right]; if you haven't done that,
try it at home first.
