Attachments gets strange filenames

2002-03-08 Thread Roberto Glavich

When I recieve an mail from an user with an attachment I get strange filenames.
example: 1_multipart_xF8FF_2_filename.htm
The filename should read "filename.htm" for example.

Have anyone seen this before?

/Roberto

I feel it is educational to point out that what you describe happens every
time someone receives a message from this list. :-)

Can you see the folder under PF resoures in Exhange Admin? If yes, then
it's still there, if it's not there then your user is a stinking liar. He
or someone else with rights to delete it did just that or they moved it
somewhere. Do you have DIR set for PFs? If not then I hope last nights
backup is good to go!
If you haven't already read the the Ed Crowley never restore method, do it
NOW.

I had something similar in the lab and had to reinstall IIS.

So I updated Exchange 2000 to SP2 and now the Metabase won't load up.
Anyone else have this problem? I'm getting 3 errors in the log file and
here they are:

Here are the 3 errors I'm receiving
Metabase Update agent failed to start. Error code is 80040a01.
Event 1002
MSExchangeMU

The Metabase Update service failed to start, error '80040a01'.
Event 9004
MSExchangeSA

Unexpected error An unknown error has occurred. ID no: 80040a01
Microsoft Exchange System Attendant occurred.
Event 1005
MSExchangeSA

This is for a client that I do work for every once in a great while.
They installed Exchange 2000 themselves and I'm not sure if they did it
correctly but it's been working for a long time. If anyone can help me
here I would appreciate it.

Thanks

multi-hundred?

You only need a 'secure-site' certificate.

The only benefit of purchasing an SSL Server certificate from VeriSign
is that web browsers will automatically trust your certificate. If you
use the CA server you just installed to issue an SSL certificate, web
browsers by default will pop up an annoying box stating that the
certificate is not a part of the root certification tree. You can
"install" the certificate on your web browser, and it will no longer pop
up the box.

So, if the multi-hundred dollar cost of the verisign certificate is
worth getting rid of the annoying box, then you should purchase the
verisign certificate. Otherwise, just issue your own, and tell your
users how to "install" the certificate on their computers.

RE: lock down users MSX2000

2002-03-08 Thread Tom Meunier

Then move 7, then dismount the other one. It takes about two minutes.
But that still doesn't meet the requirement of having all the mailboxes
available to process mail.

You could push a hosts file to them in their login script that points
the email server name to 127.0.0.1, then delete the hosts file via login
script when you're done doing your maintenance.

Your Outlook still has that bug where it's marking things as urgent, by
the way.

RE: lock down users MSX2000

2002-03-08 Thread Andrew Chan

You probably can try this. Create a special group that is denied to
access to all the mailboxes. Then, when you are about to do the
maintenance, put all those 293 users into this deny group. Take them
out of the group afterwards.

we have about 300+ users and during the maintenance we want to prevent
access to 293 and bring access to 7 , nothing easy in the registry key
to do this? I remember 5.5 there was a IS registry key to deal with this
but the same solution does not work in MSX2000. About the dismount not
good idea we DO NOT have time to move 293 mailboxes.

Service Pack 2 Problem

2002-03-08 Thread Christopher Hummert

Thanks

RE: Outlook shows blank lines in custom-filtered GAL

2002-03-08 Thread Andrey Fyodorov

James,

thank you for offering help.

I have not solved the problem yet.

I have known based on my previous experience, that if you give one person
permissions to two different GALs, they would see just the blank lines...

But this one is different - I have one "combo" GAL that two groups of users
have permissions to.

1. The blank lines are not in a perfect pattern. But maybe in a prefect
"mask"?

2. I am trying to create a Union. 'AND' will try to find each user whose UPN
matches both conditions at once. That's won't find anything.
Actually, the GAL Preview shows everyone correctly.

Andrey,

Have you solved this problem yet? I am curious as to what was wrong. If
not, while not a programming whiz kid, could I offer the following insight
from a fresh pair of eyes?

1. "...log in as a user from custABC.com and look at the GAL, I see
custABC.com users with blank lines in between them." While I understand
that you said permissions were correct, it sounds like the blank lines would
be custXYZ.com users that custABC.com users didn't have the permission to
view. Are the blank lines in a perfect pattern of every other line?

2. "Basically this query says: show all users with mailboxes whose UPN ends
with custABC.com OR whose UPN ends with custXYZ.com AND show all
mail-enabled groups whose name ends with custABC.com OR whose name ends with
custXYZ.com." Shouldn't your logic be, (show all users with mailboxes whose
UPN ends with custABC.com AND whose UPN ends with custXYZ.com) AND (show all
mail-enabled groups whose name ends with custABC.com AND whose name ends
with custXYZ.com)?

Yep, forgot to mention that - users from both customer domains have correct
permissions to view the GAL.

There is no problem if I create separate GALs for each respective customer
domain (as we have already done for hundreds of customers).

Groups are the same kind of groups. However the issue is not with the
groups.

Are both groups the same /kind/ of groups? And do your custABC.com
clients have rights to view your custXYZ groups/users?

Subject: Outlook shows blank lines in custom-filtered GAL

Hello

I have a strange issue with a custom-filtered GAL.

Basically I have two customer domains that would like to have a combined
global address list.

So I have created a custom filter using this query:

(&(&(mailnickname=*)
(|(&(objectCategory=user)(|(userPrincipalName=*@custABC.com)(userPrincip
alNa
me=*@custXYZ.com)))(&(objectCategory=group)(|(cn=*@custABC.com)(cn=*@cus
tXYZ
.com))

Basically this query says: show all users with mailboxes whose UPN ends
with custABC.com OR whose UPN ends with custXYZ.com AND show all
mail-enabled groups whose name ends with custABC.com OR whose name ends
with custXYZ.com.

When I click on the Preview, everything looks very good.

However when I run Outlook and log in as a user from custABC.com and
look at the GAL, I see custABC.com users with blank lines in between
them.

If I log in as a user from custXYZ.com and look at the GAL, I see
everyone as expected.

It seems that somehow Outlook is not able to read the custom filter
query.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

lock down users MSX2000

2002-03-08 Thread Bravo, Liliana

we have about 300+ users and during the maintenance we want to prevent
access to 293 and bring access to 7 , nothing easy in the registry key to do
this? I remember 5.5 there was a IS registry key to deal with this but the
same solution does not work in MSX2000.
About the dismount not good idea we DO NOT have time to move 293 mailboxes.

I've been dealing with this same thing. I'm with you and trying to figure
out the motivation for the emails. They are not advertisements and contain
no attachments. We have had at least 20 people receive the exact same email
which is:
Fred,

It was nice to talk to you today I will send the proposal tonight.

I'm blocking the sending domain because I don't like it but like yourself
I'm trying to chase it down.

I am attempting to figure out why a user can not see another users calendar.
I know what everyone is thinking right now. . . but give me 1 sec.
UserA can not see UserB's calendar but UserC can see userB's calendar.
So I figure it is a permissions issue I go into UserB's sytem to see the
permission on their calendar, and UserA & UserC are both listed with
Reviewer permissions.
Is this setting also stored on the server side?

RE: Rules Client or Server??

2002-03-08 Thread Darcy Adams

If the action requires authenticating the user, or access to resources not on the
server side, it will be client side.

So - rules that direct to a .pst file are client side
Rules that permanently delete something (skip the Deleted Items folder) will be client
side
Rules that direct items to a Public Folder will be client side.

Probably some other circumstances, but those are the top three that users complain to
me about.

You could do that but watch your replication traffic. A generic

Can we have multiple GCs in a domain? It is pointless for us to cluster

What is the recommended configuration to avoid this single point of

RE: Hierarchy or Flat Global Address List

2002-03-08 Thread Erik Sojka

The biggest issue you'll run into with multiple containers creating a
hierarchy is that you cannot easily move mailboxes between containers.

If Jane the mailgirl moves into the finance department, you would need to
exmerge her mailbox to a PST, delete the mailbox, create an identical
mailbox in the new container (which just like with NT SIDS, would not be the
same mailbox) then import the PST.

People responding to mail from her old account would get NDR'd. SIS would
be lost. Anything that pointed to the old mailbox would fail.

Your project to eliminate the hierarchy and create a flat structure would
multiply that manyfold.

RE: Outlook Web Access Error

2002-03-08 Thread Ken . Powell

I can't speak for Exchange 2000 but I ran into the same issue with OWA and
Exchange 5.5 and it turned out to be the ability to logon local to the
machine right that was needed. I had mine outside the firewall and
connecting through VPN and needed to give Domain Users the Logon Local
right.

Like I said, I can not speak for E2K but that was EXACTLY my problem.

Hierarchy or Flat Global Address List

2002-03-08 Thread Juan Fernando Salazar

Hierarchy or Flat Global Address List
Hello,

Most Exchange 5.5 implementations I've seen have this flat Global Address
List, but today I've been asked for eliminating a hierarchy (you know
Finance then Accounting, etc) in this Global Address List, therefore
leaving it flat.

For my surprise it can't be done clicking and dragging, so my questions
are:

1. what are the difference between having flat or with a hierarchy? pros
and cons, and

2. the most important how can I delete all this hierarchy and leave it
flat?

Please your comments and help will be very much appreciated,

RE: Outlook shows blank lines in custom-filtered GAL

2002-03-08 Thread Blunt, James H (Jim)

However the issue is not with the
groups.

Conversation: Outlook shows blank lines in custom-filtered GAL
Subject: Outlook shows blank lines in custom-filtered GAL

Hello

I have a strange issue with a custom-filtered GAL.

Basically I have two customer domains that would like to have a combined
global address list.

So I have created a custom filter using this query:

(&(&(mailnickname=*)
(|(&(objectCategory=user)(|(userPrincipalName=*@custABC.com)(userPrincip
alNa
me=*@custXYZ.com)))(&(objectCategory=group)(|(cn=*@custABC.com)(cn=*@cus
tXYZ

It seems that somehow Outlook is not able to read the custom filter
query.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

2002-03-08 Thread Tom Meunier

I just realize I always assume people have Enterprise, and you may not.
And also, that you are requiring that the mailboxes still be accessible.
How about in ADUC/Exchange Advanced/Mailbox Rights taking away rights
from the "SELF" object?

Move them to another mailbox store and dismount it for your maintenance

securing your position.

More to the point when there is a virus outbreak in the middle of the night
you know you have had the updates applied automatically.

Gothcha, I do get their email updates and I just click on the provided link
to the IDE. I understand what you are saying though. Not to sure if I want
to though. If I do this my job security will start to slide due to the

Mike

If you are subscribed to Sophos then you will receive an alert for an
individual ide update.

When the message arrives, and I have suggested the you use Exlife to save
the mail body. Exlife will also kick off your batch file to extract the text
from the mail file that you have saved. You then extrapolate the data in the
mail body.

Then you can use sget to get your individual ide file.

I really don't like Sget that well. You can't retrieve only the latest IDE,
you have to grab them all. I basically save it from my mail and run a batch
that does the rest without my intervention.

Michael

I have done exactly what you are doing. What you need to do is save the
string from your mail out as a txt file and then run your sget (I am
assuming every time there is an ide update). This can be easily achieved by
using a utility like Exlife at www.ornic.com. I worked on this one with
Sophos and they were extremely helpful.

If you want any more help just email me on this one.

Heres an idea. Convert your batch to an executable and try to run it that
way instead of pointing to the batch.

Need to automatically update virus IDE via sophos which then download into a
mailbox and automatically update. Have managed to use sget and the message
downloads. I am now trying to get it to automatically run when recieved.

In the rules wizard of outlook I have used:
Apply this rule after message arrives
from [EMAIL PROTECTED]
start c:\sophos-update.bat
and delete it.

Can see the message coming in however it does not seem to run.

If anyone knows a way to do this in outlook 2000 - please let me know.

2002-03-08 Thread Bravo, Liliana

Hi,

This is an operational MSX2000 and we just want for next maintenance to deny
access to use some mailboxes (whitout disabling NT account) also we need to
let the admins and some test mailbox to continue to access their mailboxes.
ALL these mailboxes already exist in the server.
I am looking for a Q-article to learn what to do to accomplish that.

Liliana,
It's not exactly clear what you are trying to accomplish here. If you don't
want a user accessing the Exchange server, don't create a mailbox for them.
Are you trying to prevent users from using certain protocols?

I receive a message in my inbox sent to an email address that does not match
my own (completely different domain name). I use nslookup to resolve the
domain name of the sender's address and the domain doesn't exist. The
following day another employee receives a similar email with a "to:" address
that does not match our domain.
In both cases the recipients first name matched that of the first part of
the email address.

Example:

Say my name is Jay and domain name is yahoo.com
I receive an email in my inbox sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] - I have no mx record
for delta.com and my server is not configured to route delta.com inbound.

Can anyone explain this?

Thanks,

Well, we have two GCs in our small (6 Win2K servers) network, just so there's not a

RE: RFR Interface 9074

2002-03-08 Thread Tea, Justin

Aaaah, so in theory, if we check all my DC's to be GC as well,
Outlook/Exchange should not experience any hick-up shall any one of them
needs to take a weez!

There must be a reason why not otherwise MS would have set it by
default!

Can we have multiple GCs in a domain? It is pointless for us to cluster

of failure. Although we have two other DCs...

What is the recommended configuration to avoid this single point of

RE: Automate Sophos Anti Virus in outlook

2002-03-08 Thread Rob Moore

I use InoculateIT on my servers (don't hit me; it's legacy, though I have to admit no
problems with it so far). I just have them download signatures from the CA FTP site
every night (lately there have been signature updates almost every night anyway). Then
I have all my clients download the latest updates from the servers every morning.
Keeps us all up to date. Can you do something like that?

securing your position.

More to the point when there is a virus outbreak in the middle of the
night you know you have had the updates applied automatically.

If you are subscribed to Sophos then you will receive an alert for an
individual ide update.

When the message arrives, and I have suggested the you use Exlife to
save
the mail body. Exlife will also kick off your batch file to extract the
text
from the mail file that you have saved. You then extrapolate the data in
the
mail body.

Then you can use sget to get your individual ide file.

I really don't like Sget that well. You can't retrieve only the latest
IDE,
you have to grab them all. I basically save it from my mail and run a
batch
that does the rest without my intervention.

I have done exactly what you are doing. What you need to do is save the
string from your mail out as a txt file and then run your sget (I am
assuming every time there is an ide update). This can be easily achieved
by
using a utility like Exlife at www.ornic.com. I worked on this one with
Sophos and they were extremely helpful.

If you want any more help just email me on this one.

Need to automatically update virus IDE via sophos which then download
into a
mailbox and automatically update. Have managed to use sget and the
message
downloads. I am now trying to get it to automatically run when recieved.

In the rules wizard of outlook I have used:
Apply this rule after message arrives
from [EMAIL PROTECTED]
start c:\sophos-update.bat
and delete it.

Can see the message coming in however it does not seem to run.

If anyone knows a way to do this in outlook 2000 - please let me know.

RE: Warnings with isinteg

2002-03-08 Thread Soysal, Serdar

I suggest you move those mailboxes to a different server if you have one.
If you don't have a second/spare server, then call PSS before you do
anything.

BTW, if a failed drive corrupts your db, you may want to look at acquiring
hardware with better quality disk subsystem.

E2K SP2 and W2K SP2

The server has two storage groups and was backup up without a problem. I
just started receiving errors during the backup using Backup Exec saying
Access denied to database followed by file corrupt. I ran isinteg just in
test mode and it produced 107 warnings.

I had a drive fail on that server, switched out the drive and everything
appears to be functioning except the backups. I'm guessing the failed drive
may be the cause of the errors I am seeing. Below is an example of one of
the errors and they are all very similar. Would you suggest I run isinteg in
fix mode?

That's a known virus, actually. IIRC it is sircam. It's possible the malware

Warnings with isinteg

2002-03-08 Thread Cook, David A.

E2K SP2 and W2K SP2

The server has two storage groups and was backup up without a problem. I just started
receiving errors during the backup using Backup Exec saying Access denied to database
followed by file corrupt. I ran isinteg just in test mode and it produced 107 warnings.

I had a drive fail on that server, switched out the drive and everything appears to be
functioning except the backups. I'm guessing the failed drive may be the cause of the
errors I am seeing. Below is an example of one of the errors and they are all very
similar. Would you suggest I run isinteg in fix mode?

Warning: Folder 54 (Fid=0001-0041) "Restriction": Error JET_errObjectNotFound
seeking to message in this restriction(fid = 12-6C777A, mid =1-1D8F)

What you see in the message is the P2, or the contents. But routing is done
on the P1, or envelope. The envelope is not visible in the client; it's
discarded before delivery to the final destination.

RE: Problem with Outlook after repairing windows

2002-03-08 Thread Jim Helfer

It often seems that I'll have a problem installing software from a CD, and
swapping out the drve solves the problem. I think it might have something
to do with the crummy CD drvies that our former computer suppliers would
inlcude on their boxes.

I guess what you have to do is stock spares of what you expect to break.

I would say keep good quality PS, stick of Ram, NIC, and a HD on the shelf.
A CD drive is rarely critical.

We also do a lot of cannibalizing unused equipment. In my experience
though, if your replacement hardware is too old, it just causes more
problems. Maybe it's not compatible with the current chipset or OS, or needs
a firmware update to work. Maybe it was exposed to some harsh environmental
conditions while sitting on the shelf. Maybe the part was always faulty,
and the regular user just never thought enough to report it, or thought it
was caused by something else. The big problem is it puts the tech in the
position of wasting a lot of time trying to get a recalcitrant "spare" part
to work in user's environment while the user breathes down your neck
wonderingly loudly about the incompetence of the tech support staff.

You should at least have a good quality PS, stick of Ram, NIC, and a CD
drive on the shelf.

We have 75 employees, so if someone's machine dies, they can often borrow
someone else's. If you only have 20, then you could easily not have an idle
machine.

We had quite a discussion about this issue. We have very few replacement
parts (mostly old computer parts not used anymore). The idea is, if
something breaks we order the parts. They are usually delivered on the next
day (almost just in time;). We have half time workers so there is always an
unused machine around. People share their computers.

Yes you are right. The wage for an employee not able to work in 'his'
environment for a day is probably higher then the cost for unused hardware.
But this is not my descision. We have only 20 employees here and so far
hardware problems were allways managable. I am sure after an worse case
scenario the management will change it's position.

Take life insurance on all ex-employees and then shoot them.

RE: The great smtp mystery

2002-03-08 Thread James Lavoie

I checked the header in outlook (dont know if there is a better way) but
obviously that wont show you who is bcc'd
If it is bcc though, there should be a motive (it wasnt any type of an
advertisement, it basically looked like a legitimate response to another
persons email)
