RE: MailBox LIMIT PROBLEM

2002-06-20 Thread Ed Crowley

Right-click Outlook Today, select Properties. Click the Home Page tab
and clear the Show home page by default for this folder" checkbox. Then
select the Outlook Today root Mailbox folder. If you don't see any
messages it's because there are none there or you have some filter on
the folder view you need to remove.

I'm not sure what client you are using, but it works fine for me (OL
2002). The top of the store isn't listed in the list you describe - it
is above that in the two lines of folder size and folder+subfolder size
(it is the folder size, BTW). The one below is the entire mailbox size.

My meaning of breakdown is, when you go into the properties of the
Outlook Today - [Mailbox - your name] and click on folder size, you see
a breakdown of every folder listed under it. The top of Information
store is not one of them. A quick test will prove my point. Verify the
folder size of your Outlook Today - [Mailbox - your name], now create a
new message with a known size attachment and send it to yourself. Check
the folder size again and it should have increased by the size of the
new message. Now, take that message and drag it onto your Outlook Today
- [Mailbox - your name], the entire mailbox size will remain the same,
however, the size of your inbox folder will be decreased by the size of
the message you moved. You will not see where this message has been
moved to because you can't look at the Top of Information Store and the
only way to see if there are some messages there, is to do an advanced
find.

It has been my experience, that when users complain about having a full
mailbox and swear they are under the limit, I check for messages in
their Outlook Today - [Mailbox - your name]and walla, they their are.

Im not sure what you mean by breakdown. The "Folder Size" *is* the size
of the folder in the question. So if you are looking at the properties
of "Outlook Today" folder (i.e. The top of the Information Store) , that
is its size. Unchecking that box should remove the "Outlook Today" pane
and restore the "regular" folder view and allow you to easily see any
emails that may be in that folder.

Hello!

Can anyone recommend a software to allow wireless PDAs to access
Exchange mailbox? I know there is MIS 2002, but it requires a AD which
I don't have. I also looked at the Infowave software, but it's taking a
over week to talk to Pre sales people.

I am looking for a software that will work with Pocket PC, Palm, etc.

Thank you in advance,

Brian

RE: Kill new e-mail messages to previous employees

2002-06-20 Thread Slinger, Gary

Per 1, that kinda goes to the original purpose of this list. You were kinda
expected to know that stuff before you showed up here. But that's clearly
shot to hell.

Per 3, bullshit.

Per 4, Not relevant to the conversation.

It pains me to defend Woodruff given his previous (lack of) contributions,
but there you go.

1. Believe it or not, some of the people that are on this list are not only
"Exch Admins" but also server double duty by working in other functions in
their company. In the case a vice president of a construction company...I.E.
work on Exchange...build buildings, get screamed at by owner's, holler at
subcontractors, estimate jobs, pay roll, accounts payable, job cost,
maintain the other software on the network, etc, etc, etc. all in a crappy
construction market where you can't hire a full time MIS person as money is
too tight.

2. Sometimes, your brain goes numb and something just does not ring a bell.
Have you ever forgotten a person's name?

3. 100% of the things we all know in life were taught to us by someone else.
I have learned a ton by reading this list when possible and, every once in a
while, dipping my toe in the water and asking a question.

4. Have you ever used some type of software for years and had someone walk
up and do something that, while you thought you knew it backwards and
forwards, you had no idea it would do?

We have always had problems with young carpenters not asking enough
questions because some old superintendent that "knew everything" bit their
head off for asking what they thought was a stupid question...sound
familiar?

The best method I have seen for this is to create a dummy mailbox. Assign
it all the SMTP addresses for the former employees.

Open this mailbox and set up an inbox rule wizard to permanently delete the
messages as they come in. For all practical purposes they become
vaporized.

Not exactly RCW and such compliant, but it works.

Is there some brilliant way to delete all of the junk e-mail that
ex-employees get? I.E. I have it (Exchange 2000) set to send me any e-mail
message that does not resolve to one of our employees. When we kill their
old e-mail box, they have inevitably set them selves to receive every piece
of junk e-mail known to man so I get tons of them. I realize I could just
create a rule in my e-mail box to kill it as it comes to me, but is there
some kid of way to return an e-mail to the sender that acts like the domain
is no longer available (I.E. it would act like it bounced and we no longer
exist). For example, when our server went down during the conversion, all of
the e-mails I get for this list service got bounced back and my account get
set to "on-hold". What ever it looks like when my e-mail gets bounced is
what I would like to do for specific addresses.

Does this make sense or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Thanks,

Arch Willingham

RE: Allocation Unit (Cluster) Size Question

2002-06-20 Thread Martin, Jon

I don't use the word much, but this is an awesome book. Tweakers & nit
pickers will have months of fun implementing the millions of useful
recommendations in this book. In the same way that you should not trust a
default Windows implementation to be secure, you should not trust it to be
optimized for performance, either. This book tells you why, and how to get
the most from your hardware & OS.
And the answer to the original question is: I was close. Keep the write size
(4k for Exchange db), cluster (allocation unit) size and RAID stripe size in
sync. What I was not thinking of is the RAID stripe size applies to the
amount of data written in one contiguous chunk to each disk in the array.
There is a corollary number to plug into the equations - the stripe width,
which is the number of drives in the array which data is written to. So if I
read this correctly, you would want the RAID stripe size to be 4k divided by
the stripe width. Keeping it simple, if you had four drives in a RAID 0
array, the correct stripe size to match the 4k Exchange database writes
would be 1k. The fact no one would run Exchange in RAID 0, and that you
would really have eight drives in a RAID 0/1 array does not change the
optimum stripe size in this example.
Additional performance? Sure. Enough to re-config a production box? Probably
not, unless you have a high degree of tolerance for risk and pain. Good to
know for new boxes, though.
Now if we can just get someone to spend a bunch of time testing this all out
in their lab, and report back.

Actually, my boss prefers that I get the most out of the money he spends
on hardware and software. When I ask a group of knowledgeable folks a
question concerning a little documented but potentially useful way to
increase system performance, my boss sees that as a useful expenditure
of my time. Trading shots with someone who has indicated she really
doesn't know the answer probably would not meet his idea 'useful
expenditure of time', but he will probably get over it.

If performance is really an issue maybe you should consider different
hardware configurations. For instance, RAID 0+1 instead of RAID5, use
more disks in your RAID array to "spread" the data access, faster disks,
higher end controllers with more R/W cache, etc.

To worry about negligible performance (probably < .01%) increases while
investing actual productive time probably means you need your boss to
assign you more work. Unless, of course the time you spend measuring all
the differences in performance while "tweaking" your system with
different configurations actually translates to "no extra cost".

Uh, if I understand you correctly, you are not much interested in
tweaking a few easy (during system installation, anyways) settings to
optimize (at no extra cost) the performance of your system.

Exchange writes to the database in 4k pages. This being the case, does
it not make sense to format database drives in 4k Allocation Units
(clusters)? And beyond that, since my RAID controller gives me the
ability to control the stripe size, shouldn't make this 4k also? Get
everyone (database, OS and
hardware) in 4k harmony, so to speak.

On a similar track regarding transaction logs, if we have valid
information as to the average size of messages in our system, would
there be a performance boost by configuring the transaction log drive to
use clusters and stripes close to (but a little bigger) that

2002-06-20 Thread Arch Willingham

1. Believe it or not, some of the people that are on this list are not only "Exch
Admins" but also server double duty by working in other functions in their company. In
the case a vice president of a construction company...I.E. work on Exchange...build
buildings, get screamed at by owner's, holler at subcontractors, estimate jobs, pay
roll, accounts payable, job cost, maintain the other software on the network, etc,
etc, etc. all in a crappy construction market where you can't hire a full time MIS
person as money is too tight.

2. Sometimes, your brain goes numb and something just does not ring a bell. Have you
ever forgotten a person's name?

3. 100% of the things we all know in life were taught to us by someone else. I have
learned a ton by reading this list when possible and, every once in a while, dipping
my toe in the water and asking a question.

4. Have you ever used some type of software for years and had someone walk up and do
something that, while you thought you knew it backwards and forwards, you had no idea
it would do?

We have always had problems with young carpenters not asking enough questions because
some old superintendent that "knew everything" bit their head off for asking what they
thought was a stupid question...sound familiar?

Open this mailbox and set up an inbox rule wizard to permanently delete the

create a rule in my e-mail box to kill it as it comes to me, but is there
some kid of way to return an e-mail to the sender that acts like the domain
is no longer available (I.E. it would act like it bounced and we no longer

I have heard many references to scancal.exe as a tool to try and
troubleshoot the nasty calendar problems where viewing a calendar pegs
outlook.exe at 100% (even through free/busy is still available via meeting

The best method I have seen for this is to create a dummy mailbox. Assign
it all the SMTP addresses for the former employees.

Open this mailbox and set up an inbox rule wizard to permanently delete the
messages as they come in. For all practical purposes they become
vaporized.

Not exactly RCW and such compliant, but it works.

Is there some brilliant way to delete all of the junk e-mail that

RE: From nirvana to hell in one upgrade - the tail of direct book ing in Outlook 2k+

2002-06-20 Thread Chris Scharff

I'm running a story and survey about e-mail based calendaring solutions on
my website (www.mail-resources.com) to get an idea of what kinds of issues
people are having related to calendaring and what types of solutions people
are implementing. At our office we just use Outlook's direct booking
feature, but then I can "educate" users who don't understand it directly and
we only have 2 conference rooms

So, register on the site (shame on you if you haven't already) and feel free
to moan mightily about how the world isn't fair.

E2K Deferred Delivery and Receive Date

2002-06-20 Thread Ray Beckwith

We have discovered a strange issue that started when we upgraded our Exchange 5.5
server (running on Windows NT 4 SP 6a) to Exchange 2000 on Windows 2000 (both at SP2)
The issue happens to anyone who sends a message from Outlook 2000 with deferred
delivery set either through "View, Options, Do Not Deliver Before" or "File,
Properties, Send Options, Exchange Server, Send message after...". The recipient
receives the message after the appropriate deferral time but the receive timestamp on
the message is always equal to the time sent.

This creates a problem for us as, when viewing the inbox sorted by receive date, the
deferred messages will show up somewhere in then middle and can cause confusion.

If anyone has seen this or has any ideas on how to troubleshoot the issue, please let
me know. We really want to be able to use the message deferral in E2K but this problem
makes is practically useless.

Thanks...

Outlook, Tools, Options, Other, Advanced Options, Add In Manger, Install,
dumpster.ecf and make sure the deleted item recover is checked.

You'll also want to add the dumpsteralways on reg hack to your machine at
least.

Menu item should be available regardless of whether or not there are items
to recover I believe.

Can someone please explain how this SPAM email arrived in several
mailboxes within our organization?

At first glance, it appears to have come from a former employee who
hasn't worked here in years and has long been deleted from all servers
(address SPOOFING).

Some info: Using Exchange server 5.5 with all current patches and we
are not relaying.

What I am wondering is why did this occur (not the first time and it
seems to be increasing) and how can I prevent this from occurring again?

On a somewhat related note, I need to find some way to eliminate (at
least) 50% of the tremendous volume of SPAM that arrives in our company
but I want a front-end program (not at individual workstations).
I'm wondering if MIMESWEEPER for SMTP can identify email such as this?
Any thoughts?

Better yet, create a DL with no members and add all the SMTP addresses.
No muss, no fuss, no record, nothing.

Is there some brilliant way to delete all of the junk e-mail that
ex-employees get? I.E. I have it (Exchange 2000) set to send me any
e-mail message that does not resolve to one of our employees. When we
kill their old e-mail box, they have inevitably set them selves to
receive every piece of junk e-mail known to man so I get tons of them. I
realize I could just create a rule in my e-mail box to kill it as it
comes to me, but is there some kid of way to return an e-mail to the
sender that acts like the domain is no longer available (I.E. it would
act like it bounced and we no longer exist). For example, when our
server went down during the conversion, all of the e-mails I get for
this list service got bounced back and my account get set to "on-hold".
What ever it looks like when my e-mail gets bounced is what I would like
to do for specific addresses.

Does this make sense or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Thanks,

Arch Willingham

RE: Recipent Polices Problem

2002-06-20 Thread Mark Harford

Is it reverting to whatever was the original Primary SMTP address (before
you ever added the secondary)?

Also is there an ADC in the picture or is it native E2K?

But when I change a users SMTP address back to what it suppose to be. I
run "Apply this Policy Now" And it changes it right back. That's what
I don't get. So it looks like I've given it enough time cause it changes
the accounts back to the secondary SMTP address.

Once you change the default primary SMTP address, it takes time to take
effect. Be patient.

What can cause this to happen when there is no policy setup for it to change
the secondary SMTP address to the primary? This seems awfully strange to
me.

All,
This is a strange problem I'm experiencing. Everyone's "Primary" SMTP
addresses change to another SMTP address listed for each user. We have setup
2 SMTP addresses for users when we create accounts. Something in the
Recipient Policy keeps changing it to be the second of the 2 SMTP addresses.
Everytime I make a change it changes it back. I don't see anything in the
"Default" Recipient Policy that would suggest making the second SMTP address
the primary address. Has anyone had this happen before? And if so how did
you resolve the problem? Thank you,

RE: Help with Deletion setting that are not working

2002-06-20 Thread Todd Youngbauer

I have enabled deleted items on the mailbox store per server and through
system policies and neither work. I also waited over night to see if a
reciepient policy needed to run and no luck. I have continued to test
after each change but I never see any mail to recover in the "recover
deleted items". Alos it is not just my client but all clients.

unexplainable email header

2002-06-20 Thread Shawn Connelly

Can someone please explain how this SPAM email arrived in several mailboxes
within our organization?

At first glance, it appears to have come from a former employee who hasn't
worked here in years and has long been deleted from all servers (address
SPOOFING).

Some info: Using Exchange server 5.5 with all current patches and we are
not relaying.

What I am wondering is why did this occur (not the first time and it seems
to be increasing) and how can I prevent this from occurring again?

On a somewhat related note, I need to find some way to eliminate (at least)
50% of the tremendous volume of SPAM that arrives in our company but I want
a front-end program (not at individual workstations).
I'm wondering if MIMESWEEPER for SMTP can identify email such as this? Any
thoughts?

RE: Allocation Unit (Cluster) Size Question

2002-06-20 Thread Martin, Jon

Thank you for your thorough input.

In our case this is not a bottleneck I am working on. We are getting ready
to upgrade our Exchange 5.5 system to Exchange 2000 on new servers. We have
the RAID 0+1, numerous fast fiber-attached spindles, fast log drives, etc.
The question came up because if these parameters are going to be modified,
now (when I have not yet gone production) is the time to do it.

Subject:RE: Allocation Unit (Cluster) Size Question

You might consider the book "Scaling Microsoft Exchange 2000: Create and
Optimize High-Performance Exchange Messaging Systems" by Pierre Bijaoui from
Comp^h^h^h^hHP.

There are also a couple MEC presentations around that he did that dive into
this pretty thoroughly.

Correct tuning of your disks can result in up to a 4x I/O delta. Now, not
all of this is done in stripe size; part of it is in the RAID level you
choose and the number of spindles. You may find that just adding a couple
more spindles makes more difference than any chunk/stripe size changes.

Don't focus as much on the exchange database drive though. Most of the
activity there is reads and they're cached pretty efficiently by the OS.
You can note that the EDB file grows in 1MB chunks, so perhaps that's a
reasonable number to work with. If you want to impact perceivable
performance, tune the log drives to improve the synchronous write
performance.

Also note that if you're bottleneck is not the drives, no amount of I/O
improvement will change the user experience. In other words, if your
existing disks support N I/O operations per second and your users are only
driving it to N/4, improving to 2N makes no difference to the users.

Subject: Allocation Unit (Cluster) Size Question

Exchange writes to the database in 4k pages. This being the case, does it
not make sense to format database drives in 4k Allocation Units (clusters)?
And beyond that, since my RAID controller gives me the ability to control
the stripe size, shouldn't make this 4k also? Get everyone (database, OS and
hardware) in 4k harmony, so to speak.

On a similar track regarding transaction logs, if we have valid information
as to the average size of messages in our system, would there be a
performance boost by configuring the transaction log drive to use clusters
and stripes close to (but a little bigger) that the average message size?

Or, do I have no clue as to how these things work (always a possibility)?

Thanks . . .

The best method I have seen for this is to create a dummy mailbox. Assign
it
all the SMTP addresses for the former employees.

Open this mailbox and set up an inbox rule wizard to permanently delete the
messages as they come in. For all practical purposes they become
vaporized.

Not exactly RCW and such compliant, but it works.

Is there some brilliant way to delete all of the junk e-mail that
ex-employees
get? I.E. I have it (Exchange 2000) set to send me any e-mail message that
does
not resolve to one of our employees. When we kill their old e-mail box, they
have inevitably set them selves to receive every piece of junk e-mail known
to
man so I get tons of them. I realize I could just create a rule in my e-mail
box to kill it as it comes to me, but is there some kid of way to return an
e-mail to the sender that acts like the domain is no longer available (I.E.
it
would act like it bounced and we no longer exist). For example, when our
server
went down during the conversion, all of the e-mails I get for this list
service
got bounced back and my account get set to "on-hold". What ever it looks
like
when my e-mail gets bounced is what I would like to do for specific
addresses.

Does this make sense or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Thanks,

Arch Willingham

I click on deleted items in Outlook. I then go to recover deleted items
from the tool bar. It opens the window but the window is empty and the
3 buttons are dimmed as I am sure due to the fact that there is no mail
listed in the window. It seems that all the mail is either hard deleted
or the server is not holding it even though I just deleted a message and
emptied the deleted items.

What do you mean, "ghosted"?

I like to uninstall Exchange patch, Q303451... But it's complaining
about iisproto.dll not being the right version. Does anyone know a way
around it?

I'm at 6.0.5762.3 and it's expecting 6.0.4720.42.

... And this is all because I want to have a clean Add/Remove Program
...

Thanks in advance.

RE: Kill new e-mail messages to previous employees

2002-06-20 Thread Arch Willingham

Can you still create dummy mailboxes with Exchange 2000? I thought thy all had to have
a valid NT account to create one.

The best method I have seen for this is to create a dummy mailbox. Assign it
all the SMTP addresses for the former employees.

Open this mailbox and set up an inbox rule wizard to permanently delete the
messages as they come in. For all practical purposes they become vaporized.

Not exactly RCW and such compliant, but it works.

Is there some brilliant way to delete all of the junk e-mail that ex-employees
get? I.E. I have it (Exchange 2000) set to send me any e-mail message that does
not resolve to one of our employees. When we kill their old e-mail box, they
have inevitably set them selves to receive every piece of junk e-mail known to
man so I get tons of them. I realize I could just create a rule in my e-mail
box to kill it as it comes to me, but is there some kid of way to return an
e-mail to the sender that acts like the domain is no longer available (I.E. it
would act like it bounced and we no longer exist). For example, when our server
went down during the conversion, all of the e-mails I get for this list service
got bounced back and my account get set to "on-hold". What ever it looks like
when my e-mail gets bounced is what I would like to do for specific addresses.

Does this make sense or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Thanks,

Arch Willingham

create a DL with all the email addresses, no members and hide it. No rule

RE: Kill new e-mail messages to previous employees

2002-06-20 Thread Akerlund, Scott

I agree. My boss is mostly pushing the OWA2K scenario. I just decided to

RE: Allocation Unit (Cluster) Size Question

2002-06-20 Thread Webb, Andy

You might consider the book "Scaling Microsoft Exchange 2000: Create and Optimize
High-Performance Exchange Messaging Systems" by Pierre Bijaoui from Comp^h^h^h^hHP.

There are also a couple MEC presentations around that he did that dive into this
pretty thoroughly.

Correct tuning of your disks can result in up to a 4x I/O delta. Now, not all of this
is done in stripe size; part of it is in the RAID level you choose and the number of
spindles. You may find that just adding a couple more spindles makes more difference
than any chunk/stripe size changes.

Don't focus as much on the exchange database drive though. Most of the activity there
is reads and they're cached pretty efficiently by the OS. You can note that the EDB
file grows in 1MB chunks, so perhaps that's a reasonable number to work with. If you
want to impact perceivable performance, tune the log drives to improve the synchronous
write performance.

Also note that if you're bottleneck is not the drives, no amount of I/O improvement
will change the user experience. In other words, if your existing disks support N I/O
operations per second and your users are only driving it to N/4, improving to 2N makes
no difference to the users.

Thanks . . .

RE: Block Size

2002-06-20 Thread Martin, Jon

My theory:

1. Assuming you install the OS on a new drive, the boot/OS drive is in 4k
blocks by default. You can probably pre-NTFS-format the drive in another
machine with larger or smaller blocks, but you may create other issues by
doing so.

2. Exchange writes to the database in 4k pages. Numerous Q docs mention
this. Formatting the drive in 4k blocks may have a beneficial effect.

3. Best as I can tell, the transaction logs, which are 5mb each, are written
to transaction by transaction. Use performance monitor or other tools to
figure out what your average transaction size is (this assumes you have a
system in place already to monitor), and make the block size the next size
up from that (assuming your average transaction is not above 64k).

This is just my theory . . .

Re: Help with Deletion setting that are not working

I click on deleted items in Outlook. I then go to recover deleted items
from the tool bar. It opens the window but the window is empty and the 3
buttons are dimmed as I am sure due to the fact that there is no mail
listed in the window. It seems that all the mail is either hard deleted
or the server is not holding it even though I just deleted a message and
emptied the deleted items.

1 Yes log files should be put on a separate disk Not if you use
multiple
storage groups you will need separate physical disks. Raid 0+1 is best.
Obviously this is in a perfect world. The block size is 4K

Can someone please point me to a document that will give me definitive
answers to my questions below or can respond with positive answers:

1. What should the block size be for the Transaction logs (assuming that I
have placed then on a different disk volume)

2. What should the block size be for the database taking into consideration
that you have edb and stm files on the same volume.

3. What should the block size be for the operating system.

4. Can you please give an explanation as to why you would use the
recommended block size for the above 3 questions.

5. Can anyone recommend a good TechNet article that covers this topic.

Note I have looked on TechNet but have not really found anything concrete
and on the user group archives.

Uninstall E2K

2002-06-20 Thread MS Exchange Discussions

I like to uninstall Exchange patch, Q303451... But it's complaining
about iisproto.dll not being the right version. Does anyone know a way
around it?

I'm at 6.0.5762.3 and it's expecting 6.0.4720.42.

... And this is all because I want to have a clean Add/Remove Program
...

Thanks in advance.

RE: Help with Deletion setting that are not working

2002-06-20 Thread Todd Youngbauer

Thanks. I apologize I forgot to check the reply box. Anyway I am in the
Deleted folder in Outlook and I go to recover deleted items and everything
is ghosted as if the server beleives that it should not hold deleted mail.
I think it is a server issue but it seems that the usual setting for item
deletions are set properly.>

I realize that. When I go there it is ghosted out as if I have the server
deletion setting set to 0 days which would flag messages to be deletd from
the server as they are deleted from the client. I have set the server
localy and through policy to hold deleted mail for 14 days but can not
recover mail from the client. I have also applied the policies. I can't
think of what I am missing but assume that it is an issue with the server
not the client or client proccess?

Thanks

Just going into Deleted Items isn't enough. Choose Tools / Recover
Deleted Items when in that folder.

RE: Quick Migration Scenario to get XCH2k OWA

2002-06-20 Thread Midgley, Ian

Would suggest that OWA on 2K isn't a big enough driver for you to rush your
AD implementation. Anything wrong with OWA on your existing 5.5
architecture? Give you a bit of breathing space to get AD built and
operational.

Subject: Quick Migration Scenario to get XCH2k OWA

Deep breath:

If I want to get 100 people (currently in an nt4 domain/XCH 5.5 SP4) asap on
xch2k OWA will this work:

Install 1 backend exch2k server in my 5.5 site

Install 1 frontend exch2k server in my 5.5 site

(or just consolidate these onto 1 server and punch port 80/443 through
firewall?)

Install 2 AD domain controllers (split roles) for accounts (We have AD plan
written, so we would start enough of this to get us going)

Make 2 way trust between nt4 domain and ad

Migrate users mailboxes to exch2k server (ADMT or Quest tool)

Users with mailboxes on exch2k server either have to log into ad or log into
nt4 and authenticate every time they use Outlook

Thank you for any opinions or suggestions!

mail will be deleted when you delete it.
