Subject: Tracking Klez on exchange 2k.

Yes, I'm running antivirus, as well as blocking extentions. (norton for
exchange 2.5)
I have a sneaking suspicion that a user, perhaps a remote access machine
that's connecting to exchange may be infected. I'd like to hunt down the
offender and chew them out. Does the message tracking center in System
Manager pull the true sender's email addy, or the klez'ed spoofed one? I've
got NAV CE running on all the on site workstations, so i'm moderately sure
it's no one in my building, but i want to make sure. Question: If a user
who is using Outlook for Corp/Workgroup settings is infected, will Klez send
itself out via the Outlook-Exchange connection, or will it still use SMTP to
distribute itself. If it does worm thru Outlook, does it still spoof the
name? If it does, how can you tell the true originator without any headers?
Couldn't find anything on Symantec's website about this.

Jeremy

RE: Friggin OOF netsvc to stop SA

2002-07-23 Thread Chris Scharff

So, Dan understands that OOO messages to messages sent to mailing lists is
found offensive by some and rather than put his subscription on hold or
subscribe a PF as suggested in the FAQ he instead insinuates that complaints
about his lack of courtesy to the rest of the community is childish. Ironic
in that he is most likely to offend the most prolific posters to this list,
who also happen (on average) to be the most helpful.[1]

Now, I certainly understand organizations which require OOO to be enabled to
the internet. I actually work for one. But, I have the common sense and
decency to either subscribe PFs to mailing lists or put my subscriptions on
hold when possible.

Childish to point out he's knowingly being an ass to his peers? Perhaps, but
still spot on.

[1] In fact, the most helpful developer on this list wrote a script which
kill files all future posts from anyone subscribed to this list who sends
him an OOO response to one of his posts.

Hi Everyone,

I have an interesting problem. I created a custom recipient and
directed the email coming to a mailbox to an alternate recipient (new
custom recipient) and the recipient. I am getting NDR's with "A
configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce
between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients. Contact
your administrator.
" This is only the email that is redirected
to the custom recipient. I have tried everything mentioned in Q270143.
Nothing seems to help.

We have 3 Exchange servers running Win2k SP2 and Exchange2k SP2, all are
bridgehead servers forwarding mail to the ISP's relay host.

Any ideas?

Thanks

What am I missing? I am trying to use netsvc to stop Exchange services from
a remote NT4 server. I can stop some but not all, whether I try to shutdown
the services in order or use just MSExchangeSA.

syntax is simple as far as I can see:

netsvc MSExchangeSA \\servername /stop

or

netsvc "Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service" \\servername /stop

Any help is appreciated.

When I clicked the "Generate All" button on the DS OAB tab I
got the following error: -ID# C1031662. The error in my NT event log is 5004
but there's no event info other than that. I thought I might try
reinstalling SP4 to see if that helps. The first site server to this site
was removed last week and this is the one and only server in the site. The
offline address book server in the OAB tab is the correct one however.
Any ideas re solutions to this problem would be most welcome?

Regards
Tony

Subject: Information Store Overload

Strange thing has been happening lately.

NT4 Sp6a. Exchange 5.5 SP4 w/OWA and IMC.

For the past year and a half, our Information store has always been between
3 and 5 GB. In the last two weeks, it has jumped to over 15 GB and is
growing rapidly.

I pulled a list of total mailboxes and messages and I came up with a total
of roughly 2.8 GB of data, a far cry from the 15.9 GB that my PRIV.EDB is
showing. Any ideas what could be taking up so much space? and how to remove
it/fix it?

At this rate, I'm going to run out of drive space and the IS is gonna crash.

Thanks for your help, everyone.

Denis

netsvc to stop SA

2002-07-23 Thread Ward, Stuart

All

Ex5.5 sp4 NT4 sp6

Pointers to relevant FAQ's appreciated - can't seem to find any

What am I missing? I am trying to use netsvc to stop Exchange services from
a remote NT4 server. I can stop some but not all, whether I try to shutdown
the services in order or use just MSExchangeSA.

syntax is simple as far as I can see:

netsvc MSExchangeSA \\servername /stop

or

netsvc "Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service" \\servername /stop

Any help is appreciated.

TIA

Hm. Yeah we were kinda hoping for the big magic wand to wave. :/

It's not size in the DB we're worried about, it's size over the MTA/LAN/WAN.

Yeah E2k. sorry.

Oh... E2K. Changes to E2K would only effect E2K I believe. Modifying 8k user
accounts should only take 5 minutes or so I'd imagine. Course, an oversize
message will be transmitted to the server in its entirety and stored on the
server when it is NDR'd, so I'm not sure how much that buys the average org.

I'm not sure what you're saying that folder is labeled, but have a look at Q313911 and

Subject: SMTP is angry

Ok, I admit that I am a novice again. Have an Exchange 2k server set up.
Got OWA working fine. I can send mail via OWA fine to other mailboxes on
the server and to external e-mail addresses. But I cannot receive mail at
any of my mailboxes. I can telnet to the server on port 25 fine. I type up
an e-mail there and send it and it says that its queued. My default smtpvs
is running. The properties are the defaults. Its wide open for the time
being until I can get it working. In my queues under the default smtpvs
there is a folder with a red ! labeled Enmerate messages from the queue
node. My smtp connector is also basically set with default settings. I am
not sure where to start looking for the problem.
Hoping someone can point me in a direction.
Thanks

SMTP is angry

2002-07-23 Thread Jerry Jones

Thanks

comb. 5.5/2k environment

We want to limit the message size that people can transmit inside the
company. I know I can do it on the MTA, but I want to limit the ones that
don't touch the mta (local delivery) - without modifying 8000 user accounts.

According to article q258696 you can go into ESM, Global Settings and modify
the message size (outbound) for 2k.

Does anyone know if this will affect the whole org (which is mixed 5.5/2k)
or just the 2k inside the org?

PS - ***please*** reply directly to me. Technical difficulties. Thanks.

Hi All,
Exchange 5.5 sp4, Outlook 2k

I've just finished importing 260 or so Contacts for one of my users, and
he wants to have them all in a personal Distribution List. Since this
number exceeds the number supported by Outlook and Exchange, is it
possible to use the obvious workaround of dividing the Contacts into two
DLs and putting those two DLs in a third DL, which is what the user
would actually use? Outlook seems to allow this arrangement, but I have
an instinctive feeling that it might blow up if actually used, and this
particular user has a very low tolerance for things that blow up. Has
anyone actually tried this?

I'm aware that another possible workaround is to put the DL in the PAB,
but he doesn't have a PAB currently, and I'd like to keep it that way if
possible.

Thanks,
-Peter

RE: Information Store Overload

2002-07-23 Thread Ben Winzenz

Are you sure there isn't a mail loop going on? I don't know of a whole lot
else that would cause the IS to grow rapidly. Have you checked the mail
queues? Do you have Automatic Replies to the Internet enabled? Couple
things to check at least. You could also check your log files. If in fact
there is a loop, you ought to have tons of log files. I don't necessarily
always trust the information conveyed within Exchange Admin relating to
Mailbox size and such. It can be inaccurate.

ASP script linking mailbox with disabled NT account

2002-07-23 Thread ParthaSarathy, Sriraman

I have prepared a ASP script that displays the Various exchange DL's, their
owners and members in it.

What I need to do now is how to find out which members in each DL have got
their NT accounts disabled.

Can anyone please point me how to link up the DL member with their NT
account in ASP and then if that domain account is disabled, I need to
display that member in a different color under the DL member list probably
in Red to show that it is disabled under NT.

TIA

2002-07-23 Thread Durkee, Peter

Hi All,
Exchange 5.5 sp4, Outlook 2k

I've just finished importing 260 or so Contacts for one of my users, and he wants to
have them all in a personal Distribution List. Since this number exceeds the number
supported by Outlook and Exchange, is it possible to use the obvious workaround of
dividing the Contacts into two DLs and putting those two DLs in a third DL, which is
what the user would actually use? Outlook seems to allow this arrangement, but I have
an instinctive feeling that it might blow up if actually used, and this particular
user has a very low tolerance for things that blow up. Has anyone actually tried this?

I'm aware that another possible workaround is to put the DL in the PAB, but he doesn't
have a PAB currently, and I'd like to keep it that way if possible.

Thanks,
-Peter

Do you have any other hobbies like forwarding selected messages to one of

Information Store Overload

2002-07-23 Thread Denis Baldwin

Denis

Subject: Cancel Request

I'm wondering if anyone has seen the problem I'm currently experiencing and
if so, what you may have done to fix it.

My users are running Outlook 2002 clients, my server is Exchange 5.5 with
the latest service pack. Frequently when a user opens or attempts to move a
message the Cancel Request dialog box is displayed and Outlook stops
responding until the message goes away on its own. This can take from a
couple of seconds to 30 seconds or more. It appears that messages with file
attachments are the most commonly affected.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

RE: mail trap for outgoing message.

2002-07-23 Thread Tom Meunier

Set up a different SMTP server, enter that in his account data (by IP
address) and log it from that server. Most users don't know what an IP
address IS. Other than that, IIRC, you'll need to log all SMTP traffic
and extract that one user's data from there.

Patch your server and try again. At least SP2 on Win2k and E2k. PFs

By "relative" I'll assume you mean "relevant". Basking in the glow of
that successful assumption, I'll further assume that Titanium will ship
on a DVD, with deleted scenes and director's commentary. It'll be out

RE: Cancel Request

2002-07-23 Thread Chris Scharff

Outlook used to just wait until it was ready to display the message and then
display it, now it gives the user the option of canceling an operation which
doesn't happen 'immediately'. Likely there's little or no change in
performance, just in the way Outlook handles it.

RE: Cancel Request

2002-07-23 Thread Bennett, Joshua

Sounds like Outlook is just busy communicating with the Exchange server. You
will usually see this pop-up box when Outlook is accessing a large Inbox or
large attachments.

It is expected behavior so just ignore it.

I'm wondering if anyone has seen the problem I'm currently experiencing
and if so, what you may have done to fix it.

My users are running Outlook 2002 clients, my server is Exchange 5.5 with
the latest service pack. Frequently when a user opens or attempts to move
a message the Cancel Request dialog box is displayed and Outlook stops
responding until the message goes away on its own. This can take from a
couple of seconds to 30 seconds or more. It appears that messages with
file attachments are the most commonly affected.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Um... looking at the message headers, his response was sent 5 minutes after
Andy received the original message. There is no QoS related to e-mail
delivery, which would certainly explain why you might receive the messages
out of order. Surely this isn't a first for you is it?

Cancel Request

2002-07-23 Thread Mike Connolly

I'm wondering if anyone has seen the problem I'm currently experiencing
and if so, what you may have done to fix it.

My users are running Outlook 2002 clients, my server is Exchange 5.5 with
the latest service pack. Frequently when a user opens or attempts to move
a message the Cancel Request dialog box is displayed and Outlook stops
responding until the message goes away on its own. This can take from a
couple of seconds to 30 seconds or more. It appears that messages with
file attachments are the most commonly affected.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

List postin

mail trap for outgoing message.

2002-07-23 Thread dvij query

Hi All, In exchange 5.5 ( frontend outlook2k) how can
we trap outbound SMTP mails without knowing user? User
mails are stored in his local m/c in .pst format.

I know one option i.e. rules wizard in which I can
store one copy of his outgoing mails in public folder
but it will be purely a client based rule and user can
check the rule set for his personal folder. This
particular rule can't be set on server.

Any method by which I can check and trap his outgoing
mails without user knowledge.
Thanx

Hi Everyone,

The users at one of our sites are having trouble syncing the OAB. The
error in their sync logs is as follows: -
8:48:20 Microsoft Exchange offline address book
8:48:20 0X8004010F

When I clicked the "Generate All" button on the DS OAB tab I got the
following error: -ID# C1031662. The error in my NT event log is 5004 but
there's no event info other than that. I thought I might try
reinstalling SP4 to see if that helps. The first site server to this
site was removed last week and this is the one and only server in the
site. The offline address book server in the OAB tab is the correct one
however. Any ideas re solutions to this problem would be most welcome?

Calendar Issues

2002-07-23 Thread EXTERN Hlabse Tony (Tek Systems;RBNA/CIT1)

I have heard from my new emplyer that they have been told that when they
upgrade to E2K from 5.5 they may have issues with calendar functions not
working 100%. Things like free/busy not working right. i am trying to
remember if this was a early problem with E2K that has been resolved with
the SP's. Or is this an old wives tale.

Unable to add user as owner to Client Permissions of public folde r

2002-07-23 Thread Veld, Paul

Folks,

Perhaps someone out there has seen this before. Windows 2000 SP1 /
Exchange 2000 - no SP. When a particular user is added ( as Owner,
Publishing Editor or even None ) to a public folder, the entry doesn't
'stick'. Let me explain that a bit more. Go to the Properties of
the PF, click on the Permissions tab, click on the Client Permissions
button, click on the Add button, select user from GAL, change role from the
default value of None to Owner ( or any other value ), click OK, click
Client Permissions button again - user entry is gone. This has been tried
from a number of privileged accounts - all display the same results. I have
not been able to find any errors in the Event logs.

Anyone have any suggestions? Please???

Paul.

Re: Does this mean what I think it means

2002-07-23 Thread Chris H

What I ended up doing:

When I dig their domain they have their primary and secondary SMTP servers
listed in their MX records. I noticed their secondary server was in a
completely different domain (name at least). So I put a "per domain" in the
connections by domain on the IMC and all is well. Now I know this defeats
the purpose of having 2 MX records with different costs if this one should
fail, but the mail wasnt going through with their primary server anyway
s . . ..

Later and thanks for all the help. I only have to re-read the RFC 10 more
times or so before it is rote in my brain.
Oh, that has to wait. I have to whip up an ultra-secure Terminal Server
first and install Document Control! ;)

RE: Utility to set random passwords?

Thank for the offer but I have created the users using an import with
LDIFDE and wrote a script that changes the passwords to a random complex
password.

I recently wrote a perl program that takes an addusers export file and
populates it with passwords consisting of random characters. If you
haven't
already created the user accounts, you can use my code along with
addusers.exe (NT4 resource kit, but works with AD too).

Subject: Utility to set random passwords?

Does anyone know of a utility that can set random passwords for a large
number of domain accounts at one time? I need to be able to specify
complex password and password length in the utility if one exists.

The reason: We are setting up a Cisco IP Phone system and the voice mail
system uses Exchange as the store for the voice messages. By design it
is unified with the users mailbox so their voice messages get delivered
to their inbox. The decision has been made that we don't want it to work
that way, not my decision, our way to do it is to setup a second mailbox
for each person that will be their voice mail box. I can use ldifde to
setup the 770 accounts but they are created without a password. I could
then reset the password on each account but then I know the password
which means they all must be changed if I ever leave the firm.

Any ideas of how I can do this?

Could I create 1 ADC to pull from 3 of those sites instead of an ADC for

Exchange 2000 Server name has been changed

2002-07-23 Thread Michel Fayad

Hi all,

At a company they have two Windows 2000 Domain Controller. On one of them Exchange
2000 is installed.
They installed a third party application named Galileo.
After installation and restarting the Server, the name of the Server was changed.
After this exchange 2000 Services are not starting.

I tried to demote the DC so I can rename it back to the old name, but this also
failed. The reason is that the DC is still known in Active Directory by its old name.

My questions are:
Is there a way to make Exchange 2000 work after the Server name has been changed?
Or is there a way to force a demotion of a DC?

I hope somebody can give me a help on this.

Best Regards,

Michel Fayad
