RE: patch MS03-046 update clarification

2003-10-23 Thread Veld, Paul
I've been told by an MS person that I don't need the patch if I have
post SP3 rollup installed.

Does anyone know whether you still need this patch if you already
applied the September Post SP3 Rollup? I mentioned last week that the
files appears to be the same. But didn't see any response to that.

The way I read the update (ver 1.1) to this patch (for my scenario,
W2K/SP4,
EX2K/SP3) is I do not need to re-apply it, as the updated version has
only made changes to Exchange 5.5 part of the patch ...

Runnign Exchange 5.5 SP4

I recently had someone report to me that she was not getting all her emails
from a specific company. The company was running an online training service
and each time someone would sign up for a course, their system is supposed
to send us and them, course confirmation emails. The system uses the BCC
field to send these emails to us while the TO field contains the email
address of the person who signed up for the course. So 3 people receive the
confirmation, the person who signed up for the course, my staff person
(blank copy) and the person at the company offering the service (blank
copy).
The problem is that some of these emails don't come through at all or
sometimes if they do come through, it takes a couple of hours or even a day
or so to reach us. I have enquired from the company whether they are having
any problems with their mail service and they claim that the blank copies of
the email confirmations reach them right away so they are pointing a finger
at us saying the problem is at our end. However, I have had no problems
sending myself emails from other sources. I have tried sending myself emails
from my Yahoo, Hotmail and even my Verizon account and all the emails reach
my Exchange server right away.
I even sent myself an exact duplicate of the email confirmation that goes
out spoofing the FROM address to read as the sender of the email
confirmation message and they do come through almost instantly (which proves
that my spam server is not catching these emails).
Is it still possible that the problem might be on our end ? Why then would
some emails reach my server instantly and some wouldn't ? I haven't had any
other complaints from others about emails not reaching us on time.
Please advise.
Thanks

I wasn't aware that any version of MMS or MIIS did free-busy synchronization
since it really has nothing to do with the directory, being that free-busy
data is stored in a system public folder. The only tool I was aware of that
did this was the InterOrg Replication Tool that comes in the Resource Kit.

RE: OWA and URLScan-Blocked Special Characters

2003-10-23 Thread Martin, Jon
Thanks for the input on this. While both my post here and on the MS newsgroups failed
to elicit detailed specifics as to what exploits were being prevented by blocking
these particular characters, these responses were useful and definitely preferable to
what I received yesterday from MS PSS. Their answer was 'We know, but for security
reasons we cannot tell you.' ( A snide aside: Thanks, MS. That took five phone calls,
five emails, and you still have not agreed to non-decrement the case.)

On a much more positive front, I received an excellent response from Rand Morimoto
([EMAIL PROTECTED]), author of the book "Exchange 2003 Unleashed". My query to Rand
was to help explain the two most problematic character blocks (from a customer
irritation point a view) - the '..' and the '&'. Rand's response was as follows:

"The '..' in a URL allows for traversal of the directory tree. This means that when I
get access to one location on an Exchange server, I can send a .. command and walk
"up" the directory tree. This can actually be minimized by having tight security
rights, so I really don't see a problem with that issue. The '&' is more of a problem
because that allows you to "string together" multiple commands. So you can tell an
IIS server to open an email and to launch an executable at the same time. However
this too can be minimized as a risk by hardening the server so that someone cannot
hack the server to then launch an executable (i.e. I send an email to someone with an
attachment, I somehow know that persons logon/password, I then "open and launch" the
executable that brings the whole network down). This "presumes" that you allow
executables into your network AND it presumes that someone has their user account
compromised. But it's possible."
"So by themselves, the ability to bypass URLScan for these commands, while it does
weaken security, requires a couple other compromises to take place in your
environment. Another option is go to IIS6 / Exchange 2003 OWA. IIS6 has functionality
that allows you to run and access messages that may otherwise be URLScan compromising,
however Exchange 2003 / IIS6 have better protections to allow access without
restricting accessibility while minimizing security risks."
The bottom line in our environment is that we will open the '..' and '&' for OWA, and
let other security measures handle the potential risks.

Subject:OWA and URLScan-Blocked Special Characters

OK, we all know that when you run Urlscan on an Exchange server that you will not be
able to view certain notes in OWA, specifically those notes with special characters in
the subject line. The special characters are below, along with the reason, according
to MS documentation, that these should be blocked.

.. Allows directory traversals
./ Allows trailing dot on a directory name
\ Allows backslashes in URL
% Allows escaping after normalization
& Allows multiple CGI processes to run on a single request

My management wants these characters unblocked. To prevent this I need a better
understanding of what potential problems are being prevented by the disabling of these
characters. The above explanation in the MS documentation is probably not going to be
sufficient.

Does anyone have a more detailed explanation of the possible exploits being blocked by
disabling these characters??

Thanks.

or so to reach us.
Thanks

Two and a half hours ain't bad from what I hear. :)

I have yet to go there yet. I know that I left Hazel Dell a couple of weeks
ago and thought that there was a really bad accident since the traffic was
stopped.

I hear that it is nice, but, yeah the traffic sucks from what I have seen. I
am not sure what the deal is with it and the county. I know that I get shown
"no love" when I offer to check mail connectivity for each concert.

I would think that they would want to be certain that it was working!!! :)

Your points are valid Ben.
I started here 6 years ago and it was my 1st admin job.
Having a list of all passwords semmed like the right thing to do at the
time.
And yes, management is aware of the list.
I think I am going to take your advice on the GP password management.
Just gotta hand it off.

I know where in GP the password policy is, but right now, in the user
acounts, "Password never expires" is checked.
In order fro GP to do it's job, I will need to uncheck that. Correct?

Why is it necessary that you keep a list of all the passwords? It is
one thing to have a list of service account passwords, and such, but all
users is quite another thing. It is a HUGE security risk. Imagine what
would happen if someone got ahold of the document that had everyones
passwords.
If you are using Exchange (valid assumption I think since this is an
Exchange list), then you are using either NT or Windows 2000.
Why can't you have your users manage their own passwords? Every client
that logs in to the domain should have the ability to change their
password - even 9x clients can change their passwords. This is not
something that you should be doing or should have to do - now of course
that is only my opinion and you are free to do as you like, but I would
rather choke myself than have to maintain all my users passwords for
them. Does HR know that you maintain a list of everyone's password?
Does your corporate lawyer know? If not, you better make sure they do.

I realize I am probably not being helpful to what you are wanting to do,
but I (and probably most of the others on this list) have never run
across a sysadmin who insisted on maintaining a list of all his/her
users passwords.
So if you like, simply dismiss this as a rant from me
- it won't hurt my feelings if you do. I certainly wouldn't wish for
your job if I was required to do what you are doing.

No.

We have always manually created the passwords in the past and kept a
list.
Doesn't make me a hacker of any sort.
The company is getting so big, Just looking for a way of automating it
yet maintaining a password structure.
I am one person managing two departments and too many servers and

that we have purchased everything. I am just dragging my feet until there is
service pack released for Exchange 2003. That is how I got buy-off for
skipping 2000 and going straight to 2003.

At TechEd they made it seem that the best path from Exchange 5.5 was to go
straight to 2003. I am going to Orlando next month and will see what they
say there.

Thanks again.

Check with your MS licensing rep for exact details. I was told that each
Exchange 2003 CAL includes a license to use Outlook 2003, but not all of
Office. I don't believe that you can use Exchange 2000 CAL's do to this,
though. Again, to be sure, check with MS. They are the only ones
authorized to quote official licensing.

Does Outlook 2003 have the same licensing setup as the other versions?
That is, I have an Exchange 2000 server, and licenses for Office 2000.
Can I install Outlook 2003 on workstations using the Exchange CALs?

Thanks,

If echo to a telnet session is almost good enough I would use blat
(http://www.interlog.com/~tcharron/blat.html) I use it all the time in
batch
(.cmd) files for notifications purposes (backup complete/failed,
transfer this completed, update that done, etc)

As others have mentioned, there are some better, fuller-featured,
solutions out there, but at under 100K and a single .exe you can't beat
blat for sending simple e-mails.

how to do a return command. If you know of something different please

RE: Password Mainenance

2003-10-23 Thread Ben Winzenz
YES! :-) I think you would be well served by working with HR and/or
management to come up with a password policy. I don't know how often
you change them right now, but you can force password changes however
many days you like. We have our passwords set to expire every 45 days
and people must use strong passwords (3 of 4 UPPER, lower, 1234,
&$*()#&%) and they also cannot use the past 10 passwords. Some would
say that it is a stringent policy, but it sure as heck reduced the
vulnerability of someone brute forcing a password. We also have
accounts set to lock out after 3 or 4 bad login attempts (also negates
brute forcing or guessing). Again, I would work with HR or management
to see what they would like. Be sure to present what you would like
first and then modify it if necessary. Are you using Active Directory
then? Sounds like it since you are talking about Group Policies. I
would be more than happy to forward you a sample of our policy if you
would like.

logs in to the domain should have the ability to change their password -
even 9x clients can change their passwords. This is not something that you
should be doing or should have to do - now of course that is only my opinion
and you are free to do as you like, but I would rather choke myself than
have to maintain all my users passwords for them. Does HR know that you
maintain a list of everyone's password?
Does your corporate lawyer know? If not, you better make sure they do.

I realize I am probably not being helpful to what you are wanting to do, but
I (and probably most of the others on this list) have never run across a
sysadmin who insisted on maintaining a list of all his/her users passwords.
So if you like, simply dismiss this as a rant from me

As others have mentioned, there are some better, fuller-featured,

blat for sending simple e-mails.

RE: Password Mainenance

2003-10-23 Thread John Parker
Your points are valid Ben.
I started here 6 years ago and it was my 1st admin job.
Having a list of all passwords semmed like the right thing to do at the time.
And yes, management is aware of the list.
I think I am going to take your advice on the GP password management.
Just gotta hand it off.

I know where in GP the password policy is, but right now, in the user acounts,
"Password never expires" is checked.

Looked at this product but didn't like the idea of swapping my Priv database
over to a Pub database, just moves the problem around in Exchange. Legacy
Email I believe should be removed to improve Exchange times, but keep user
transparent access.

Cheers

Paul

RE: Sending email via a batch file

2003-10-23 Thread Dickenson, Steven
I agree. However, this person wanted to send e-mail from a batch file. I
interpret that to mean .BAT or .CMD files, for which BLAT is well suited and
ready to go.

You don't need Blat. Any person who calls themselves a developer should have
some knowledge of the different ways you can send mail with CDO.

We have a developer that is trying to find a way to send email via a
batch file. Does anyone know if this is possible and what the code is
that he should use? It will be sent to our SMTP server and then out
from there. We tried echoing a telnet session but we cannot figure out
how to do a return command. If you know of something different please
let me know. We are trying to stay away from buying anything third

RE: Sending email via a batch file

2003-10-23 Thread Michael Henry
AFAIK, You now must maintain the older CDO support files yourself, for
complete automatic use of CDO as it was first purposed. The new ones
require user action in order to process an e-mail.
AFAIK, If you use the new files, you must use a third party tools, to get
"around" the user action screen.

To make my apps M$ proof, I coded a SMTP mailer, very simular to BLAT.

Hi,

We have Exchange 2000 configured to send and receive mail for our Domain
(e.a. microsoft.com)
A user in our company wants to be able to send email using a different
Domain name (e.a. msn.com)
Is there a way to configure Outlook/Exchange 2000 to give only this user
permission to send on behalf this "external" email address?
Hope anybody can help me with this issue.

Best Regards,

Michel Fayad

only made changes to Exchange 5.5 part of the patch ...

RE: patch MS03-046 update clarification

2003-10-23 Thread Martin Blackstone
The patch was not redone. Just the wording of the alert.

The way I read the update (ver 1.1) to this patch (for my scenario, W2K/SP4,
EX2K/SP3) is I do not need to re-apply it, as the updated version has only
made changes to Exchange 5.5 part of the patch ...

(snippet from

ity/bulletin/ms03-046.asp )

V1.0 October 15, 2003: First Published.
V1.1 October 22, 2003: Removed unnecessary information from "Deployment"
in the "Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 4" section of "Security Patch
Information."

Comments? Clarifications?

RE: Disappearing email

2003-10-23 Thread Jason Clishe
True, but again...we're only talking about an occasional message
disappearing. If something were POPing, it would take all the messages
from the Inbox.

Force a password change on all of them. If something is POPing it, that
will stop it.

I agree with what you're saying, which is why I didn't spend too much
time worrying about it at first. But considering that 4 or 5 other
people started having the same problem, all within a few days of each
other, it raises suspicions that maybe it isn't something with the
client.

Could be (1) another machine logged in to the account with delivery set
to a PST, (2) a rule that moves the mail somewhere else or deletes it,
(3) a view or a filter that somehow hides the message, such as one that
shows only unread messages, so when she clicks on it it disappears from
view.

Subject: Disappearing email

Exchange 2000 SP4

I've got a user (Outlook 2000) that, beginning last week, claims to have
had some email disappear on her. In one instance, she said she saw an
email come into her Inbox, then saw it disappear within a second, before
she had a chance to open it.

I didn't really spend anytime looking at it; I was busy and told her
that she must have a rule or a filter gone wacky on her. But now I'm
starting to receive similar reports from other users. In fact, one of
the users just came on board with us this week, got a brand new machine
with Outlook 2003, and is on a different server from the other users
having this issue (Exchange 2003). He swears he hasn't created any rules
or filters in Outlook (he's only been here 2 days, so he hasn't had much
time), and since his PC is brand new, I know there's nothing leftover on
it from previous users.
And, considering he's on our Exchange 2003 server, I can't even tie the
disappearing emails to a single server.

Any ideas?

Jason

How to send on behalf for an "external" Domain?

2003-10-23 Thread Michel Fayad

Exchange security issue

2003-10-23 Thread Cabezas, Manuel
Exchange 2000 Enterprise SP3

Hi all,

I've developed an ASP application to arrange meetings for some of our
domain users (salesmen/saleswomen) through a Web page.

This application runs under a privileged user's security context, and it
uses MAPI objects (Session, Folder, Messages, Appointment, etc.) to
connect to our Exchange Server 2000, retrieve users' calendars and
create a page to render a combined calendar (showing combined
availability).

In order to allow accessing to other people's calendars, I had to grant
"total access" permissions to the users' mailboxes for the user running
the application. Otherwise, I received an error executing the
GetDefaultFolder(CdoDefaultFolderCalendar) instruction. The error
message was: "Collaboration Data Objects (0x505). You do not have
permission to log on. [Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store -
[MAPI_E_FAILONEPROVIDER(8004011D)]".

Is it possible to configure a different set of permission parameters to
allow access to other people's calendars without allowing full control
to those user's mailboxes?

Before using MAPI objects, I tried using the "ExOLEDB" provider and it
worked fine. All I had to do is to add the privileged user, with a
"publication editor" profile, to the user list located on "security tab"
of the calendar properties configuration window.

Nevertheless, I had to migrate to MAPI objects because the ExOLEDB
provider isn't able to access a remote Exchange Server, and my
application will run on a dedicated Web Server.

Can anybody help me?.

TIA

RE: Upgrade 2000 to 2003

In the Front-End Toplogy guide whitepaper from Microsoft on Exchange
*2000*, that's the recommended approach.

I just got out from Exchange 2003 Server training and our instructor
told us that Microsoft has changed their position about putting Front
End servers in DMZ areas. They are now recommending that put all Front
& Back end servers in your local network then use Proxy solutions to
have your Front End servers to talk to outside of your network.

Subject: Upgrade 2000 to 2003

Can I please have comments on the following plan?

The current setup:

EX01, an Exchange 2000 Enterprise edition server sits on our LAN. In
our DMZ we have MIS01, a Mobile Information Server 2002 server. (both
these servers are member servers in the AD)

Also in our DMZ, we have a workgroup win2k server which acts as our SMTP
gateway for Exchange.

Users access OWA on EX01 by connecting to our firewall using https, and
the firewall NATs that through to EX01.

All of that works fine.

The plan:

Taking advantage of our Software Assurance, upgrade EX01 to Exchange
2003 enterprise edition.

Buy a license for Exchange 2003 Standard edition, and install that on
MIS01, configure as front end server for OWA, connecting to mailboxes on
EX01

Re-jig so MIS01 is also acting as our SMTP gateway, probably retaining
the workgroup server as a backup MX

MIS functionality (serversync, OMA, etc) is included in Ex2003, so we
don't need MIS2002 anymore.

Thanks in advance.
