RE: NT 2000 backup of Exchange.

It is Exchange aware only after you load Exchange. One of the things
Exchange does is modify ntbackup to be Exchange aware.

I know they tell you to to use the Exchange 2000 version for MS Exchange
2000 Server. Admittedly, I don't recall anything about using it with MS
Exchange 5.5.

A humble question to the Great one. I am relatively new to the list
(been monitoring and occasionally posting for about 2 years) and I have
always wondered, what is the correct pronunciation of your name. I would
hate to insult your greatness by mispronouncing it when paying homage.

If you have Sharepoint Portal Server you can do Exchange Public folders,
web sites, file servers, Lotus Notes R5 DB, and STS so that they can
have one place to go for all of there "finding".

He knows, but is sworn to secrecy on the subject. About all he'll ever
offer is the cryptic riddle, "Try them and see." If you spent more than
a millisecond deciphering that irony-laden statement, you would realize
a dawn of knowledge you never before imagined possible, which is
probably why you didn't spend any amount of time in excess of said
millisecond trying to suss out the meaning of Ed's Chinese puzzle.

You obviously haven't realized the connection between MS Exchange and
the JFK assassination. Once you do, you'll stop writing responses like
the one below and focus instead on that strange Error 45998 from the
SMTP engine, "Error 0008400D-C445643F in garrison.dll..."

The purpose of asking was to see if anyone knew. I know I could do some

Hi All,

I am trying to find some kind of documentation on the different
levels of logging in the 'diagnostics logging' tab of the IMC (Exchange
5.5). I am trying to find out what is logged at the different levels for
all the categories. (Initialization/Termination, Addressing, Message
Transfer, SMTP Interface Events, Internal Processing, SMTP Protocol Log,
and Message

Thanks in advance!

I always use a script to create accounts using a combination of ADSI and
CDOEXM. And I populate the msExchAccountControl property in the
process. With one little script, you can even go back to using your old
CSV file format for creating things.

There's a perl sample at http://www.swinc.com/resource/scripts.htm and
there are WSH samples around in several places too (what used to be the
Compaq ActiveAnswers site for one, CDOLive also had one, the newsgroup
archives have several).

RE: OWA Exchange 2000

2002-09-24 Thread Bubba G

Maybe one of two things:

1. If they go in IE to:
Tools
Internet Options
General
Settings
Is it set to Check for newer versions "Never" or even "Automatically"? Change it to
"Every visit to the page".

2. In:
Tools
Internet Options
Security
Internet (Or whatever Web Content Zone that web site is set to)
Custom Level

At the very bottom, does it pass logon credentials automatically (kinda the same thing
Gordon was asking)?

IS the website part of their trusted zones within IE?
Try having them hit the server by IP address and see if it works. If it does,
register the server with a second domain name in DNS (owabdi.cc, for example). Do not
include this second domain name in your trusted zones.

I did not take this seriously the other day but now I have a user who can't get into
OWA. The user belongs to a customer, a company in Brazil. She is not able to log in
using a particular ID/password. Although she can log in fine using other
ID/Password(s). There is nothing wrong with this particular ID/Password - I and many
other people can log in fine from independent locations.

It looks like this user's IE (or proxy?) has cached a connection to a specific mailbox
and now always wants to hit it, no matter what the logon credentials are. And if the
credentials don't match the logon is denied.

My guess - something is wrong with the proxy.

If your DR time is still within SLA limits, then just keep adding
drives. If not, then either split to two or upgrade to E2K and create
multiple stores... How long has your DR time been since you have grown

Hi guys.

I have an exchange 5.5 on a strong machine. The IS is over 73GB (total
of 500 users). I am thinking whether it is the right move to split this
box into two servers. The main problem is that I will loose SIS...
On the other hand, I will have two smaller databases.

I am sure some of you had this scenario in the past. I would like to
hear your opinions. In case it is important, the IS is going to be moved
to EMC box in 3 months (part of storage project).

I am mostly intersted hearing from happy users with such big IS (are
there?!)

Thanks!

RE: IS 70GB and growing....

2002-10-01 Thread Bubba G

Definitely not true. A 10GB database will be corrupt if someone who
doesn't know what they are doing fools with it enough. A 100GB one will
work fine as long as no one messes it up with things like "regular
maintenance of ESEUTIL offline defrag" or other such stuff. I would
second the concern about using EMC as a back end storage. Do you know if
PSS supports that? Yes, this is a test question as I already know the
answer.

BG

BTW, this comment might be completely unrelated to this thread but
hypothetically, any vendor that tells you that they support what MS does
not is just using their PSS contract to support it instead of your PSS
contract. May or may not be pertinent to this thread.

Hello.

I have been told that Exchange 5.5 with IS bigger than 50G is VERY bad.
It means there is big chance the IS won't start after restart.

I am wondering if this is true, meaning, this is an undocument
limitation, and should I be afraid to have IS above 70G? The IS is on
EMC. The server is very very strong and acts very fast

Thanks for your time!

There have been numerous discussions regarding content filtering and how
it works. Decide what you are willing to risk in lost mail, or
additional manpower resources versus what you are trying to accomplish.
Then go find the tool that meets those requirements.

Anyone else having trouble with AOLs new SPAM rules?

2003-07-31 Thread Bubba G
I have architected for Fortune 10s... but this time I have a small
server on a home network. I use DynDNS.ORG to update the A and MX

coming from a dynamic IP address. I have emailed them asking about this
but I know they will respond with something like "We are attempting to
reduce SPAM"... even though I reject SPAM on my server's SMTP connector
based on IP because SPAMmers typically use the same ISPs and static IP
addresses... and there are only a handful of ISPs that allow spammers
knowingly.

Anyone else had problems with this lately... or more importantly found a
way around it (other than getting/paying for a static IP address)?

I've had problems from a dynamic dns site on a cable modem sending to
aol for a long time. ISP's smtp server is the only way to go -
smarthost is one way, you can also set up an smtp connector to send mail
to specific domains to your isp's smtp server such as aol.com. Your
choice if you trust your isp's mail server more, or your ability to keep
the list on your connector current for domains that won't except your
outgoing email directly

What are you using for hardware? I have 2 dedicated servers running W2K,
E2K, SQL2K, ISA, SPS among other things as well as 8 workstation/servers
that dual-boot. I have an OnStream ADR 15/30 drive but the drive is too
small now and I am finding I am not backing up rather than fool with it.
I have set my Exchange logs to circular and have realized I need to find
a new tape drive for backup. I presently backup both local and across
the wire for all 10 computers to one computer with the ADR 15/30 tape
drive. What is the best/most reliable 60/120 hardware (and software you
are using for it if it is not NTBackup) for those on a budget out there

I have set my Exchange logs to circular and have realized I need to find
a new tape drive for backup. I presently backup both local and across
the wire for all 10 computers to one computer with the ADR 15/30 tape
drive. What is the best/most reliable 60/120 hardware (and software you
are using for it if it is not NTBackup) for those on a budget out there
now?

RE: Backup hardware

2002-12-04 Thread Bubba G
Yeah, BUY.COM had this 80GB external USB2 drive on sale yesterday for
$169. I considered several of those as well.

http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10323086&hdwt=0&loc=101

The DR routine would be a bit more complex if there was a complete
melt-down however... So I decided against it for now and decided to
continue to look at the tape drives.

Good idea. I expect to do these in the middle of the night, but that's
still important if you're doing 30 or 40 gb. I'll go out & see if there

Check the speed of the unit (throughput in actual use, not the speed
of the HDD, or the IDE interface, or the USB2 interface) before you make
a purchase. Some of those things (the no-name stuff, generally) are
much slower than one might expect.

RE: Backup hardware

2002-12-04 Thread Bubba G
I had circular logging enabled even before I stopped backing up. And I
was using NTBackup when I was backing up. I stopped backups because the
small tape drive was slow, time consuming, and high-maintenance.

For any business to enable circular logging is asking for trouble if
they need to enact a DR routine... For home use, worst case (if I was
actually backing up) is that you lose a days mail... A risk I am more
than willing to take.

But thanks for those pristine words of wisdom Tony.

Let's see. Not backing so you activated circular logging. Wrong. There
are many good solutions out there. In the mean time start using NTbackup
at least, till you decide.

RE: Backup hardware

2002-12-04 Thread Bubba G
Yes, that was BUY.COM's "Price Mismatch of the Day" yesterday... $100
off yesterday if I remember.

If DR involves only E2K then an external USB drive could work. If the
whole OS needs to be reloaded, then things like a restore from a floppy
and restore media would be difficult because the floppy would not likely
have a USB 2.0 driver. Conversely, it would likely have a tape drive
driver. So, in that case you would need to do a complete OS restore
first (presumably to a typically non-OS drive), then a DR restore to the
correct location. Then delete the temp-loaded OS. Doable, but a hassle
and a lot longer... Things that are doable but a hassle are the reason I
got to this place to begin with :)

I architect systems for big companies and deal with all their
headaches... I want home to be as hassle-free as possible.

Anyone know of a table of client protocols?

I have been looking around for a table that shows the different
protocols (MAPI, POP3, IMAP4, and maybe RPC/HTTP) that shows what
clients using them can do. I am writing a document on the options and am
looking to avoid reinventing the wheel on recreating an existing table
if it exists.

RE: outsource!?

2003-11-17 Thread Bubba G
and if there are only 250 users/350 mailboxes then I doubt you are
talking about multiple staff members or sites who are effected. This is
just:

1 staff member
1 site
1 server

Correct?

The selling point on your side at that point will be the great deviation
in IBM price that will occur if your company needs to deviate from the
standard pricing. For that small a site, IBM's cost will grow
exponentially with each change. Look for reasons to need to deviate and
how out sourcing will compromise overall user experience and executive
staff features.

You'll find that IBM are fully au-fait with all the security,
regulatory, recovery and performance aspects.
You are up against IBM who, along with EDS (Whom I just left), CGEY and
a pile of others who have done this inside out and upside down and more
times than you've had hot dinners.
Put all, and I mean all, of your technical aspects to one side. If IBM
are at proposal stage it means they're nowhere near the technical nitty
gritty. That comes with the Due Diligence phase where you will have the
opportunity to lay all the cards on the table and where IBM adjust their
cost model to suit what you say you want versus what they say you really
want and, this is a biggy, what that say they can provide from cheap
Leveraged resources and what they can provide from dedicated resources.

The more they can provide from Leveraged resources the cheaper it'll
become and the less viable an internal solution becomes.

All of your bullet points will be met with indifference since they're
pretty run of the mill.

You will most likely find that IBM taking over the servers does not
necessarily mean taking them into their own data centres. It could just
as easily mean that they transition some of you employees into IBM
(making some redundant later) and manage the boxes on your current
sites.

The reason IBM are coming in is that your CIO wants the same job done
cheaper, not necessarily better, just cheaper. Better is a luxury
Your best hope is to conduct a root and branch review of exactly what
you have got, what you can get rid of and consolidate, how many staff
you can afford to lay off as part of internal cost savings, and finally
what your cost savings will be as a result of the internal
rationalisations.

You will be onto a loser in the long run since it's a foot in the door
to total IT outsourcing and business process re-engineering.

My CIO has asked me to attend a meeting in which IBM is going to propose
outsourcing our e-mail services, taking over for our 350 Exchange 2000
mailboxes.

I'm looking for arguments to marshal against outsourcing. So far, what
I've got is:
* security: We use Clearswift MIMEsweeper to block incoming (and
outgoing) messages containing viruses or executable files (.bat, .exe,
etc.). This being IBM, I'm sure they can protect against viruses,
though.
* disaster recovery: Our disaster site is updated in real time.
During the blackout in August e-mail was up twenty minutes after I
arrived at the DR site. Again, probably not a potent line item against
IBM.
* regulatory: we have some regulatory requirements for keeping
all records (including e-mail) on site for seven years.
* integration: Our CRM solution integrates directly into
Exchange, adding contacts directly to the users' mailboxes.
* performance: I have trouble seeing how performance would be
adequate when the mail server is off site.
*   price:  250 users.  350 mailboxes.  140GB/month (according to
the Journal folders). That can't be cheap.
* legacy: Seven years of preexisting e-mail, spread out among
mailboxes and pst files. About 200GB all told.

What else am I missing?

Outlook doesn't come with an IM client. It's a separate download, or
you can use the one that comes built-in with Windows XP/Windows 2000
(updated to newest version, of course). I am using Office 2003, yet my
IM client is Windows Messenger v5.0.

Also, to answer another question about having 2 versions side by side,
my experience is that you can only have 1 MSN Messenger/Windows
Messenger client installed. If you install 6.0, it will replace 5.0 and
you will no longer have Exchange IM support. I found this out the hard
way a while ago.

You can do an NSLOOKUP to get the IP if you need it. Also, if NSLOOKUP
comes back empty, then Exchange's DNS lookups are also coming back empty
and you can look at the potential DNS problem.

Subject: Not sending to Hotmail???

Hi,
a couple of days ago, a client said that they could not send email to
any
addresses at hotmail.com. I tried myself from their server and indeed,
you
cant.
I checked the DNS settings on the server and looked at what the domain
hotmail.com resolves to, and it looks ok. The ISP say there is no
problem,
MSN say there is no problem they know about, and hotmail rekon there is
no
problem but are asking for more info.
Its MSX5.5 sp4 on Win2k sp4. It runs a DNS server with forwarders to the
internet DNS servers, and every other domain accepts mail fine, but
messages to hotmail just sit in the IMC send queue retrying and saying
that the host is unreachable.
I have recreated the internet mail connector and reapplied service pack,
but no change.

Any ideas at all?? Thanks.
