Clustering Exchange

2002-11-22 Thread Callan, Chris
Okay, we have been beating our heads around looking for a cluster option
that will work for us, obviously Active/Active was shot down, because of the
memory fragmentation, even though initially MS told us it could be done, for
the meantime we are looking to just go Active/Passive, I was wondering
though what the general consensus on going N+1 is. We are going to explore
the possibility to go to this, but I wanted to get some opinions on it
first.

RE: Clustering Exchange

2002-11-22 Thread Callan, Chris
To answer your reasons not to

1. Already have hardware. Higher ups, didn't mind spending money.
2. Thinking about N plus 1
3. True
4. No reason why I would want my server to be a Domain Controller
5. No reason why I would want my server to be a Global Catalogue Server
6. Have another machine with the srs, and only need it while 2000 and 5.5
are co-existing.
7. True.

The reason my company would like a cluster, to have the most available
uptime as possible. So if a server does happen to go down, we wouldn't have
much downtime, as if we had to fix a standalone server.

Oh Boy

(Time to get on my soap box)...

Reasons not to have an exchange cluster:

Clustering is generally expensive
Clustering is more complex than two servers
Front end\ Back end configurations are more complicated
Exchange cluster nodes cannot be domain controllers
Exchange cluster nodes cannot be global catalog servers
Clusters cannot support the SRS service
Clustering will not save you in the event of a hardware failure leading to a
-1018 error and corrupting your mailbox store.

Reasons to cluster exchange:

Looks good on your resume

Trust me... I have a cluster. Exchange 2000 is complex enough. Why would
you want to introduce a cluster and complicate your environment even more?

You are absolutely correct and I apologize, I should have added those.
No, the names do not appear in the GAL. I have checked ADC and if I create
an account on Exch5.5 after synch it will show up in AD. There no event logs
in system or application. As for changes The only change (and noted this)
was to add an A/A exchange cluster to the existing exch5.5 and another E2K
server within the same org and site.

Thank you for replying. I knew that but the problem is when
one does either of the below:
  A. can not Create a profile in Outlook, as when the Check
Name button is pressed it pops with a warning saying that the
name could not be resolved in the address list
  B. trying to send an email from a box in Exchange 5.5 to that
address using the full smtp address gets an undeliverable
  notification.

I have checked the propeties of the account and can for
example logon with it to the domain. But no boxes!?

I have setup an A/A Exchange cluster with SP3 in parallel with an
   Exchange
5.5 SP4. I can move mailboxes from Exch5.5 to any of the
  other servers
or vice versa. But When I create a new user with a mailbox, the
mailbox is not created on any of the cluster servers. But when one
looks at the property of the account under the exchange
  general tab it
shows that the mailbox store is on one of the cluster servers.
Does anyone have any idea why is this happening.
I can of course create a mailbox on the Ex 5.5 server and
  the account
does show up on the AD and mailbox is created fine!

Communication

2002-09-05 Thread Callan, Chris

Okay, I am getting knee deep into a conversion from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange
2000. Now we have an NT 4 Domain with two Exchange 5.5 Servers. We are
creating a 2000 Domain that is going to house our new Exchange 2000 Servers.
Now we are going to migrate with a test group to make sure everything is
going smoothly. What would be the best scenerio to have these servers
communicate with each other, that causes the least amount of network
traffic.

A Few Good Admins

2002-08-01 Thread Callan, Chris

USER: I want some answers.

LOCAL ADMINISTRATOR: You want answers?
USER: I think I'm entitled to them.
LOCAL ADMINISTRATOR: You want answers?
USER: I want the truth!
LOCAL ADMINISTRATOR: You can't handle the truth!
We live in a world that has Computers, and those Computers have to be
connected by people with a clue.
Who's gonna do it? You?
You users make me sick. I have a greater responsibility than you can
possibly fathom.
You weep for your email and you curse the local administrator.
You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that
this network, while screwed up, and confusing to you, probably saved time.
And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves time.
You don't want the truth, because deep down, in places you don't talk about
at parties, you want us in this office.
You need us in this office.
We use words like DNS, LDAP, and SCRIPTS...we use these words as the
backbone to a life spent playing with computers. You use 'em as a reason to
whine.
I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a person
who surfs and emails under the blanket of the very network I provide, and
then questions the manner in which I provide it!
I'd rather you just said thank you and went on your way.
Otherwise, I suggest you pickup a mouse and design your own network. Either
way, I don't
give a damn what you think you're entitled to!
USER: Did you shutdown my email?

LOCAL ADMINISTRATOR: You don't want to know.

USER: Did you shutdown my file server?

LOCAL ADMINISTRATOR: You don't want to know.

USER: Did you shutdown my internet access?

LOCAL ADMINISTRATOR: You're damn right I did!!!

have port 80 open for OWA since we don't run a web site from here. Ahs

The hardware can be different. You just need the same O/S and Exchange
level (version, sp etc). The only thing that might go wrong in your case is
that the previous system had a multiprocessor HAL, and the new one will be
single proc HAL.

Obviously, you'll need the same server name, site name etc. etc.

See

RE: WORM_KLEZ.G Sever Impact

2002-04-23 Thread Callan, Chris

It should be noted that if you want to see where these message are coming,
you can easily open the virus e-mail and click view, then go down to
options, and in the internet heading it will tell you what mail server the
message was sent from. That should give you a really good heads up on where
you are getting the e-mail from, and disabled mail coming in from that
particular domain. That's what I have done anyway.

If the same person is sending these in, just put that person in your Do not
allow to receive from pile (and server parameters).

When SirCam was going on, there was this one person that was infected, and
every day I would get hundreds of emails saying we stripped the attachment,
the rest was delivered. I eventually just added them to the server
parameters so everything they sent in was dumped in the bit bucket.

Did you do any research on the virus?

From Symantec's site:
The From address is randomly-chosen from email addresses that the worm
finds on the infected computer.

That's why.

Hi All

This virus, although being detected and stripped off, still causes an
enormous amount of email traffic. I currently receive about 50 to 60
warnings per hour. Is there anything one can do proactively here, no, I
don't mean pull out the network cable:-) or should I just sit out
the
storm until other administrator have patched their servers.

I'm also getting calls from other administrator saying I'm sending the
virus
to them, but the user accounts they say send these emails have nothing
in
there send items, nor do I have and records in my logs, which leads me
to
believe this little virus is spoofing email addresses.

I doubt that you can do it from within the script in the form. By product
design, Outlook will always size the message based on the last message the
user has read/composed etc. You may be able to do it using the Window
object. I remember thinking about doing this and finding out that it was
too much work and deciding to simply put a disclaimer in the beginning of
the form like If you don't see everything, just maximize the darn thing.

Use groups property of the radio buttons. Alternatively you can put the
related radio buttons into frames. The frames one worked better here where
we still have the dreadful Outlook 98 clients.

Recover Deleted Items

2002-02-15 Thread Callan, Chris

I need some help with a certain situation. When the COO of my company
receives mail to his corporate account after he reads the mail he deletes
it, and then at the end of the day he empties his deleted items folder. He
was on the road from 2/9/02 thru 2/13/02. He needed to recover a file from
the Deleted Items Recovery, and was exploring. He was scrolling down, when
he noticed something. After the last e-mail he received on 2/8/02 instead
of it going to 2/9/02 it went to 2/14/02. What happened to the messages
that he deleted when he was away. I need to find an answer for this. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

The way we have this setup we have a phone number for our outside users to
dial. They dial this number and they also have a host file on their
machine. They then double click on Outlook, and they get prompted for their

RE: Recover Deleted Items

2002-02-15 Thread Callan, Chris

Okay, just figured out the problem. Needed to remember that when you delete
stuff from your deleted items, and it gets sent to the deleted item recovery
the date displayed isn't the date the message was sent, but rather the date
the message was deleted. DUH on my part.

As others are saying. Search technet for 'dumpsteralwayson'. Apply the
registry change and search for them then. He may of hard deleted them
from another folder. In which case they wouldn't show up in the deleted
items folder once 'recover' had been selected.

this thread doesn't belong on this list, but. for radio buttons to be
separate, they have to be grouped off:

Group1 - Option 1, Option 2, Option 3
Group2 - Option 1, Option 2, Option 3
Group3 - Option 1, Option 2, Option 3

So the code would be like:

INPUT TYPE=radio name=Group1 value=option1
INPUT TYPE=radio name=Group1 value=option2
INPUT TYPE=radio name=Group1 value=option3

INPUT TYPE=radio name=Group2 value=option1
INPUT TYPE=radio name=Group2 value=option2
INPUT TYPE=radio name=Group2 value=option3

INPUT TYPE=radio name=Group3 value=option1
INPUT TYPE=radio name=Group3 value=option2
INPUT TYPE=radio name=Group3 value=option3

in a PF. Say I created the Exchange PF. I send a message to this PF, I
want an auto message to be sent from the PF telling me that there is new
mail in the Exchange PF. Using Exchange 5.5 SP4 on a NT SP6a Machine.

RE: Public Folder Message

Ok, I did this but it doesn't give me the option to just send a message to
certain people, I can either reply or forward, not just send, how do I get
this done.

Chris,

1. Go to your PF Properties Administration Folder Assistant... Add
Rule...

2. Set up the rule the way you want it to process the e-mail.

I have Win2k SP2 / Ex5.5 SP4+. I have a PF called Overtime Requests.
Anyone that wants to work OT must fill out the OT Request form that I
created and published in the Organizational Forms Library. Once they fill
out the form with the required information and hit send, the PF processes
the form.

Process:
1. We have several groups within our organization. The rules look
at who sent the form and based on who sent the form, it sends out a
notification to their manager, telling them that there is an OT form in the
PF requiring their review and approval. At the same time, it sends a reply
to the originator, telling them that their manager is aware of the request
and is reviewing it.

Works like a charm!

I did it with the reply, and having the message sent to the original user is
not something that will be wanted. Do you have a sample script you can send

Use the Reply With Template and preaddress the message that you use as the
template. That'll go the people you specified along with the original
sender.

My other suggestion of creating an event still applies.

how is it to maintain. What are the pro's and con's. Any help would be

You can argue both ways. But for the sake of simplicity, just tell him that
it did come from MSN. If he needs a detailed explanation, then you need to
explain to him the way that mail works. The message goes to your server,
which then attempts to contact the remote server (MSN in this case). It
tells the remote server who the mail is coming from, and the address it is
sending to, at which point, in this case, the MSN server responded back,
saying, that recipient address is invalid, or doesn't exist here, or
something similar, however you want to understand it. It then says I can't
accept the message because you are attempting to send to a recipient I don't
recognize, and rejects the message. Then, your server returns the response
from the System Administrator to the originator (your boss), stating that I
attempted to deliver the message to the requested recipient, and failed. Is
that a better explanation? If you want to see how it works, then open up a
telnet session to your mail server (or a remote mail server for that matter)
and get familiar with the commands. That is all mail servers do to talk to
each other.

Another CA Problem

2002-01-02 Thread Callan, Chris

Another problem I seem to have every so often with InoculateIT. After I
apply one of their Signature updates. I do all required steps to install
the patch. I stop the services and make sure the RTExch.exe files are all
stopped, then I apply the patch, and restart my services. Well after a few
hours I notice that my server is pegged at 100% and I look at the Task
Manager and the RTExch.exe's that are running are using alot of cpu. Am I
doing something wrong. Is the process just a runaway, or is it actually
doing something. I have check my event log and there have been no Virus
stops, and my InoculateIT accounts do show any signs of being in use. I am
running a NT 4.0 server SP6a, with Exchange 5.5 SP4.

100% better. Not only that they have me constantly scanning my machine.

Next question is why are you manually installing the updates? I run the
same version and you the auto download thingy and it automatically stops and
restarts all the necessary bits for me. I have very little problems with
that arrangement. Have you tried using it?

Okay, CA says that all of the RTExch's weren't stopped. I am running
version 4.53. As far as why we use it. It was inherited when I came in
here, and I am trying to convince them that ScanMail or Antigen would be
100% better. Not only that they have me constantly scanning my machine.

Organizational Forms

2001-12-20 Thread Callan, Chris

I have most of my E-Forms in the Organizational Forms Folder. Now I want to
let everyone View the folder, and also read the items in the folder, but I
want to prevent them from designing, and publishing any forms. I have tried
everywhich way till sunday to do this, but can't come up with a way. Can
anyone lend some insight into this topic for me. Also I had a past user
that created a form. In this form the boxes are not sunken but they have a
black border around them, I have tried for the life of me to duplicate this,
but cannot can someone lead me in the correct direction here also. Using
Outlook 98.

I've had that before.

1. Stop the event service.
2. From the \bin directory, run events.exe /c:{exchange server name}
3. Start the event service.

Obviously, {exchange server name} means the name of the old server. If
there are multiple entries for the same server, you must run the command
line entry once for each occurrence. Then go back into Admin and do a
refresh - they should be gone.

The default should be reviewer. Default=Author means that anybody who can
successfully establish a MAPI session to your Exchange environment can
publish forms in your Org Forms Library. While there may be cases where
this is desirable, it is a good practice to restrict the role of Author and
above to a select group of individuals who are tasked with
creating/maintaining forms for the company.

RE: Long Gone Users

2001-09-27 Thread Callan, Chris

From one of the e-mails sent about two weeks ago it has been happening for
awhile. I have been created a profile for the one individual I think it is
a problem for, and they don't have any server side rules. I am thinking
maybe client side rules but it doesn't make sense.

If this was an Exchange recipient, it would come back almost immediately.
Has this only started happening in the last week or so or has it been
ongoing. It possibly sounds like a server side rule that has been turned on
recently that forwarded messages and has now been turned off.

I myself have not received an NDR, but I just tested a little over an hour
ago, so I am still holding out that it may come, but I have had numerous
complaints over the past week or so that this has been happening.

Are you saying you are only getting the NDR when you send to both or that
you haven't received an NDR at all this time round. Maybe I am just losing
the plot now!!

Either Schmoe or Blow have Flow as a alternate recipient, either through

Ok say I send a Meeting Message to Joe Schmoe, and Joe Blow. I then happen
to receive an e-mail from the System Administrator saying that the recipient
could no be reached. Now this recipient has been gone for well over a year,
what would cause this message to be sent. Where could this account be
hiding, cause it isn't hidden, and to my knowledge there isn't one at all.
Any help would be created appreciated. I am using Outlook 98 on Win98, and
my exchange server is 5.5 Sp4

RE: Form not updating.

2001-09-19 Thread Callan, Chris

Ok, first things first, yes I have owner rights to the Org Forms Library,
second I started the whole thing by opening up the form, and taking a name
out of the To: line, and adding a name. I go to publish the form. Some
times just publish form, sometimes publish forms as. When I go back into
the Org Forms Library and open the fixed form, it opens up without the
changes that I had made.

Try opening the form in design mode by going into Tools\Forms\Design a Form
and select the form, then go into the properties of the To: field Value tab
and see if there's an initial value for that field. If there is, change it
to what you want it to be and then try Tools\Forms\Publish Form As.

Have you removed it from your Personal Forms Library like Serdar
mentioned?

I followed the procedures for clearing my forms cache, but when I opened
the
form after again changing it. It was still the same as before the
change.

Subject: Form not updating.

We have a form that resides in our Organizational Forms Library that we
are
constantly updating, but for some reason everytime I make a change and
then
subsequently re-publish the form, the next time I open up the form it is
the
same as before I made any changes. It has happened several times now,
and
there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason in which it would do this.
Does anyone have any suggestions on why this would happen.

Chris
