RE: Messaging & collaboration (Unified Messaging)

2002-06-04 Thread Felicity Smith

I apologize for leading anyone astray, but Siegfried I was absolutely
stunned to hear you say it wasn't so. I have been following this for a
long time and I though it was a done deal.

Please give me your comments on the following links.

I am checking with a few of my SQL contacts who work for Microsoft to hear
what they can officially say about this. I know a few who work on part of
the teams who are involved in the SQL.NET File System which you may or may
not know if very similar to WSS, and is optimized for handling the sort of
non-rectangular record sets that Exchange has.

I know that, I was making a dumb joke about the fact that SQL Server will
be providing the next database engine for the next version of Exchange.
And the code name for the next version of SQL Server is Yukon.

Can you confirm that ESE98 is being ported to SQL Server?

RE: CDO/ IIS force through Exchange

2002-06-03 Thread Felicity Smith

Before posting the original reply I did have a look at all CDO model's.
None of them (as far as I can see) allow you to specify which SMTP server
you want to send your email out from.

Can you tell me which method/property you are using to "hardcode" the SMTP
server name?

RE: Messaging & collaboration (Unified Messaging)

2002-06-03 Thread Felicity Smith

Unified Messaging is faceing pressures from two opposite directions. One
from Americans with Disabilities Act which requires greater richness - ie
text to voice, braille, etc, and at the opposite pole - greater thinness -
ie minimalism for text based phones - which strip away all conten but
text, and then compress words for instance - removing vowels, TLA's etc.

MIS will now be included with the next version of Exchange (code name
Yukon).

Re: IIS QUESTION

2002-06-03 Thread Felicity Smith

Why can't you log to an ODBC datasource. This is not as performant as
logging to a file.

IIS runs under the local system account. The documentation you are
reading must be incorrect.

A note on IIS Logging. This is a high performance asynchronous process.
So entries are flushed to disk when processor cycles permit. ODBC logging
will degrade performance on your server as it is more of a synchronous
process and as such prone to locking.

I suggest you write to disk and then use a perl script to merge the log
files.

RE: CDO/ IIS force through Exchange

2002-06-03 Thread Felicity Smith

I just wanted to correct my earlier post. Sorry if I led anyone astray.

OWA and other web clients running WebDav might encounter problems with
some legacy proxy server's detecting the WebDav http verbs and not forward
them.

However you should not experience this problem locally. The IIS SMTP
server is merely a relay agent. I suspect Chris is correct in his
response (I have no idea what he means though).

The Win2k CDO object model does NOT allow you to tell CDO what server to
use to send mail out. MAPI will by default send it out using your mail
profile and hence your SMTP server.

Once again I apologize for my mistake.

Re: kinda OT - RAID on the exchange server

2002-06-03 Thread Felicity Smith

I was taking one of the memory array's out (not one of the vendor reps -
although I was furious with them and would have taken all of them out (as
in to whack not on a date)) and my nail got caught on one of the array's.

Re: CDO/ IIS force through Exchange

2002-06-03 Thread Felicity Smith

I take it you are running WebDav. If so some of the legacy proxy server
trap for non standard verbs in the IIS protocol. So when they see some of
the WebDav verbs coming through they drop the packets. Have a look at
your proxy logs to see what happens when it sees WebDav coming through.

RE: kinda OT - RAID on the exchange server

2002-05-31 Thread Felicity Smith

Who is the I company? I despise that company whose name begins with D and
rhymes with Hell.

I was adminstering this Dell server and we started getting error messages
in the event log which looked strange and were coming from the disk drive.
So I called the D company and every support engineer told me it was
something different. Eventually after I complained enough they started
sending me replacement drives through a vendor. I plugged these in same
message, they said oops, we sent you another bad drive, so their vendor
sent me another. Oops, it was the same one I originally sent out.

So the D company eventually sent me a drive from their real warehouse, and
- we still got the error. Then they started saying that our application
had caused the hard drive error message, and we were to rebuild the drive
array from a backup. I asked them how is it that an application is
causing hard drive error's.

They didn't have an answer. We eventually migrated to a different server
and we were able to sweet talk them into getting a replacement.

I hated working on the innards of these servers as well. I mean have you
seen how they are laid out. The memory array card's have to be the most
bizzare thing I have ever seen.

I broke a nail taking one of these out.

Give me the C word any day.

RE: Bad amil folder management

2002-05-31 Thread Felicity Smith

Actually there are other folders where you can whack (technical term, not
that totally disgusting context you are thinking of missy) contents willy
nilly (another technical term). For instance the nntp root folders.

I was looking into importing\exporting newsgroup messages from one server
to another and would whack (technical term), selected files and could
occasionally get nntp to think the postings were its own. But it would
send a lot of them to the badmail folder in nntp (which I would whack).

Re: Outlook 2000

2002-05-31 Thread Felicity Smith

You can open up OLE objects in Outlook 2000 SP2. It will prevent people
from programtically sending out email.

BUT - you can always use Outlook Redemption which is way sexy!

This is a set or programmatic objects that mimic the function of most
Outlook methods so you can send out email even if you are running
Outlook2000 Sp2 or Outlook XP.

Please refer to

http://www.dimastr.com/redemption/home.htm

for more info.

Keep in mind that for this sort of functionality you have to have yoru
admin navigate to

Public Folders\All Public folders\Outlook Security Settings and have
him\her check all the automatically approve settings in the the
Programmatic settings tab.

Bottles of Whiskey, cuban cigars, low cut blouses may help you convince
him\her or the necessity of checking these settings.

You should use the Outlook View Control. I will paste the code in my next

antivirus detectors for everyone who subscribes to this list will howl.

Re: Trying to keep Exchange (et al) in our org

Management is getting all hot and bothered by all this new Microsoft
licensing schemes. What they are doing is making a big noise about this,
and threatening to leave Microsoft's warm embrace for *nix, and Novell.

Pay no attention to them, they will never do it. Its all smoke to try to
make MS change their mind.

RE: Installing Exchange Admin on .net server

I am not sure if this helps or not, but I installed Visual Studio.Net on a
laptop running Exchange Server 2000.

It worked great, however all of my code wouldn't work any more as the COM
based model is gone - there are ways to get around this and use COM, but
no more stuff like

set objConn=Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")

I am going out on a limb here, but I think Event Sinks might be an option.
It seems to me that this event sink would run on every inbonud message

do a redirect based on the previous number of emails regarding the job
opportunity.

To me, this might put a bit of a load on your server. I can't quantify

RE: Data Retreival from Exchange Database

2002-05-23 Thread Felicity Smith

If you are using Exchange 2000 you should Full Text Index your database
and then you could search on the subject matter you are looking for.

For instance

select ""DAV:DisplayName"" from scope(""DEEP TRAVERSAL"") where
""DAV:Subject"" contains('love')

if you are looking for love :)

You can also use this to search for the value of a property. I am not
sure what properties are indexed by default with Full Text search, but
have a look at the schema.txt file and it might be there.

Perhaps someone else has some ideas on how to query and index other values
than the defaults.

Re: OWA connection

2002-05-23 Thread Felicity Smith

Mark, locate this file. At the top of the file just after the <%
do this

server.scripttimeout=300

This will allow your page to take up to 5 minutes to render.

It is also possible that the resource you are trying to connect to does
not exist.

Is the exchange server running? Is your IIS Server hosting OWA running?

Can you access the exchange server running plain old outlook?

RE: ? about public folders

2002-05-23 Thread Felicity Smith

Thanks for your answers Neil and Keith.

How do you know this? I did search the documentation, Programming
collaborative application by Mindy Martin, and Tom Rizzo's book, but could
not find any references to it. Nor in the Exchange Server 2000 Resource
Guide, or in Tony Redmonds book (which in my opinion is full of filler).

I hope that this isn't a subtle hint telling me to get lost!

For the record the show is not based on me or my life. I started to watch
the show once and found it too boring.

? about public folders

2002-05-23 Thread Felicity Smith

I hope you can tolerate one more question from me.

I have created another storage group, but no-one can see it in Outlook. I
am running OutlookXP on my Exchange Server (development Exchange server,
not production) and no matter where I set permissions, the new public
folder that I created in the new storage group does not show up?

How can I make Outlook see it? Can I make Outlook see it?

RE: STM Question

2002-05-23 Thread Felicity Smith

Mark, are you sure about this? and if so can you send me any references to
it? I thought that all content is stored in it's native format in the
Exchange Store. So Mapi is stored as RTF, HTML as HTML, a Word Doc as a
word doc. Some of the properties are stored in the priv1.edb, but
everything else is stored in the STM.

I am basing this on what I read and when I open up the priv1.edb and the
priv1.stm in notepad. You have to stop the server to be able to do this.
I also am looking at the copies of these files in C:\Program
Files\Exchsvr\MDBdata.

TIA

do any of you know how to administer full text search programmtically?

Nor do any of the other exchange management objects I have checked.

? about the number of storage groups per server and number of stores

2002-05-22 Thread Felicity Smith

I thought you could create 15 storage groups and 6 stores per Exchange
2000 server.

I currently have 4 storage groups and a max of five stores per storage
groups. If I try to add another store Exchange complains saying "the
Storage Group already contains the maximum number of stores allowed."

If I try to add another storage group I get a message from Exchange
complaining - This server already contains the maximum number of storage
groups allowed.

Can someone explain this to me.

RE: Drive m:????

2002-05-22 Thread Felicity Smith

Thanks guys for being so patient with me:)

But I think Andy brings up an interesting point, shouldn't you map the
drive letter that EXIFS mounts to to Drive B which no-one uses any more?

Or do you firmly believe in not mounting\exposing a drive? Also this
drive is only mounted on the Exchange Server, not on the client, so as the
exchange admin don't you control who and what has access to this drive?

RE: Drive m:????

2002-05-22 Thread Felicity Smith

pardon me for sounding so partonizing, but the M drive is the installable
file system that ships with exchange. As you know all internet protocols
(http, smtp, nntp, pop, imap) are now server by the same engine that does
IIS. IIS consults the Exhcange store and a file handle to the item you
are looking for in the Exchange store is returned.

This is a true NTFS file handle and is provided by the EPoxy or EXIPC
mechanism which masquarades exchange items as NTFS file handles using an
asynchornous work queue which is extremely fast and provides little
context switching. Think of it as another file system driver just the
same as FAT, NTFS, CDFS, HPFS.

The reason some of you do and some of you don't see an M drive is because
IIS launches (specifically the W3svc service) before your exchange store
service completes it start up process. Hence no M drive. All you do is
bounce your w3svc service and you will have an M Drive.

I chose to change
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3SVC and make
DependOnService have the value of MSExchangeIS.

You can change the drive letter by editing the following registry key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EXIFS\Parameters
On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry
value:
Value Name: DriveLetter Data Type: REG_SZ Value: P
NOTE: If the DriveLetter value already exists, double-click the value, and
then change the drive to n: or another letter.

One more point about the EXIFS (Exchange Installable File System) - there
are three methods of application deployment - xcopy from the file system,
ftp, or email or sending data to an exchange public folder. NT admins
like xcopy, web admins like ftp or webdave, exchange admins like to deploy
to public folders. EXIFS provides a mechisim to keep everyone happy.
