RE: 5.5 Move to E2k - SORTOF RESOLVED Big Problem
Thanks for your help on this. I did call Microsoft. There solution fixed one problem, but created another. The solution was to modify the default domain controllers policy by adding the administrators group and the Exchange Enterprise Servers group to ComputerConfiguration-WindowsSettings-SecuritySettings-LocalPolicies-UserRig htsAssignment to allow "manage auditing and security log". After that I was able to run Forest and domain prep and load up Exchange 2000 (which seems to be working OK now). The new problem - the following pair of error messages every 5 minutes on both domain controllers. Event Type: Error Event Source: Userenv Event Category: None Event ID: 1000 Date: 3/1/2000 Time: 6:16:43 PM User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM Computer: COMPUTERNAME Description: The Group Policy client-side extension Security was passed flags (17) and returned a failure status code of (13). Please look for more details in TroubleShooting section in Security Help. I applied suggestions from Q256000 but no luck. I hoping to get Microsoft to reopen the case. Other interesting note - both domain controllers were upgraded from NT4, DCPROMO demoted then promoted to resolve a dns name issue during the upgrade about six months ago. Any insights appreciated. The scenario is as follows: The network is win2k native mode, sp2, with two domain controllers. I currently have Exchange 5.5, SP4 on a Win2k domain controller (was also a GC until last weekend) with 150 users. I have set up a Exchange 2000 on another server (non-DC) after running forest prep and domain prep. I installed the Exchange 2000 ADC. I installed win2k sp1, I joined the existed org during installation. The problem is I cannot mount the information store on the win2k Exchange server, and therefore I cannot move any mailboxes. I get an 9175 error every minute on the exchange 2k server, an 8213 every 25 minutes, mixed in with some 101's after a reboot. Move to Exchange 2000 Plan
We are planning on moving our Exchange 5.5 users over to an Exchange 2000 box soon. Here is my plan - did I miss anything big? Thanks for your help. 1. Set up Exchange 2000 SP1 on Win2kSp2 new server, joining existing organization 2. Move users over using Active Directory Users and Computers (plan for 1 gig/hour) while users are logged on to 3. Replicate public folders, after replication rehome to new server 4. Set up internet mail connector, once tested and working change to a lower cost than the 5.5 internet mail connector 5. Update MX records with ISP, add MX record on internal dns server 6. Figure out how to move the custom forms 7. Leave old server up for week or so, then follow instructions to remove first server in a site. Any comments welcome. Thanks. Timothy J. Hooks, MCSE KBHR 65 E. DNS Record?
I have just joined a 2000 exchange server to an existing org. I moved my own mailbox to the new server. Now I cannot send mail to anyone inside the org even though their names resolve correctly. We have two internal DNS machines (win2k) which have never had mx records on them. Do I need to add an MX record for the 5.5 server that has the IM connector to get this working right? RE: 5.5 Move to E2k - SORTOF RESOLVED Big Problem
FYI - this seems to be finally resolved. The problem was that the default domain controller policy file (GptTmpl.inf) was missing several lines and one line had been whacked in the middle. With the help of Microsoft this file was rebuilt and the errors have gone away. The errors were triggered by making changes to the policy in the initial solution. tjh -Original Message- From: Hooks, Tim Sent: Thursday, November 29, 2001 8:30 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: 5.5 Move to E2k - SORTOF RESOLVED Big Problem Thanks for your help on this. Trend - Off Topic - Server Protect
Microsoft clued me in yesterday as to why one of our domain controllers CPU kept going to 100% and locking up the network. The problem was intermittent over the last couple of months and we were having no luck solving it. While on the phone with PSS it happened again and Chuck asked about Server Protect then directed me to the Trend knowledge base article 10258 about a particular combination of scan engine and filter causing the server to hang when using dfs. We don't actively use dfs, but when I stop the Server Protect service it frees up the processor. Trend sent me today an engine that will be released next week that fixes this problem. So far so good. tjh _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Restore Help Needed!
Wow did I mess up... I cut all of our users over to a new Exchange 2000 server from 5.5 last week. That went fine. I followed all the instructions for shutting down the 5.5 server once and for all and did so today. I should have tested a bit more - once I deleted the 5.5 server from the organization I realized that only some of the 5.5 public folders had replicated. Problem #1 is I need to get some of that Public Folder data back. I welcome your suggestions on how to do so. Here is the plan I am working on (and problem #2) - build a 2000 server off the network, as its own domain (to keep computer name, domain name the same, etc for the restore), install Exchange 5.5 SP4, and then restore the 5.5 files from tape to this server - does this make sense to all of you? Or do you have a better idea? Problem #2 is I can't get active directory to install as it is not connected to the internet and reports a DNS error trying to resolve the FQDN. I have installed DNS and made this server the SOA and NS and a host record, as well as the default gateway and primary DNS server. Any ideas on how to get this working? Am I just missing an SOA record that has only single period in it or something like that? Lingering errors/problems after exch2k install
Hi Everyone, Thanks in advance for your help. I have recently added an exch 2000 server to a 5.5 site, moved over all the folders and mailboxes, removed the 5.5 server (according to technet) and cut over to Exchange 2000 Native mode. I am still having three problems, that have been with me since the first introduction of this server to the network. #1. Every one minute on a domain controller I get the following Security Log Failure Audit: Event Type: Failure Audit Event Source: Security Event Category: Directory Service Access Event ID: 565 Date: 12/21/2001 Time: 4:45:21 AM User: DOMAIN_NAME\EXCH2K_SERVER$ Computer: DC_SERVER_NAME Description: Object Open: Object Server: DS Object Type:configuration Object Name:CN=Configuration,DC=some,DC=company,DC=com New Handle ID: - Operation ID: {0,449887097} Process ID: 304 Primary User Name: DC_SERVER_NAME$ Primary Domain: DOMAIN_NAME Primary Logon ID: (0x0,0x3E7) Client User Name: EXCH2K_SERVER$ Client Domain: DOMAIN_NAME Client Logon ID:(0x0,0x1AD0BB6D) AccessesControl Access Privileges - Properties: READ_CONTROL Create Child Delete Child List Contents Write Self Delete Tree Manage Replication Topology The Exchange Enterprise servers group has manage replication topology rights on the domain container. I am at a loss as to why this keeps happening. Anyone? #2. I have 4 former employees that show up in the GAL - they are not listed as having mailboxes in the ESM console. In AD Users and Computers I can see their email addresses, but cannot edit/delete them or "Hide from the Address Book". The accounts are disabled, although it is the same if I re-enable them. Under "All Exchange Tasks" the only choice I have is to enable instant messaging, a feature we do not use. Any thoughts on how to get them out of the GAL? #3. The administrators group is getting the NDRs for every bad message that comes to us - about 200 a day. The "send copy of Non-Delivery Report to:" field in the properties for the default SMTP Virtual server is blank. Do you think this could be related to the fact I have set up one SMTP connector (our only connector)? Do I need that connector? We have a simple single domain with 150 users, all on Win2k, one Exchange 2000 mail server, internal win2k DNS that forwards requests to our ISP, and a T1 to our ISP. Merry Christmas - and thanks for your insights. Timothy J. 5.5 Move to E2k - Big Problem
Hi List, I am hoping some of you have some insight on a problem I am having. On the existing 5.5 server I get some 565 security errors - Directory service access errors. Both the 5.5 and 2000 admin consoles know of the other server's existence. I have poured over Technet and found some interesting stuff - most of the changes were of no help. However, Q275127 mentions no upgrade path for 5.5 on win2k to exchange 2000 (that's why I demoted the 5.5 GC status, waited a day, and rebooted). At this point I am considering opening a ticket with MS and/or running dcpromo to demote the 5.5 server. Any suggestions or comments are welcome. Timothy J. RE: 5.5 Move to E2k - Big Problem
Still struggling here. I did indeed need to rerun the /domainprep. However, when I later ran policytest it showed success on only one of the 2 domain controllers. So I waited, and by the next day on both domain controllers it indicated failure. I tried a few more times - no success. I am now about to delete the 2000 attempt - reimage and try again. Still open to any ideas or suggestions. thanks Timothy J. Hooks, MCSE Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter 65 E. State Street, Suite 1800 Columbus, Ohio 43215 -Original Message- From: Bare, Ronald A. Subject: RE: 5.5 Move to E2k - Big Problem It sounds like the maybe DOMAINPREP did not work. There is a utility program you can run to check if the correct rights are set on the domain controller. Its name is POLICYTEST. I think it is in support\utils\i386 folder on your exchange 2000 CD. At a CMD prompt, go to the directory and run it on the domain controller. If it doesn't report that the Rights are Set, then I think you need to rerun SETUP /DOMAINPREP. -Original Message----- From: Hooks, Tim [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, November 13, 2001 3:26 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: 5.5 Move to E2k - Big Problem Hi List, I am hoping some of you have some insight on a problem I am having. Need help from fellow Exch2K SP2 Admin
Hello, I am wondering if someone can contact me off the list who is running Exchange 2000 SP2 and try sending an email to a particular Exchange 5.5 box in Luxembourg. I can successfully communicate with this box with a hotmail account and through a manual telnet session, but fails with Exch2k. The NDR specifies a 5.5.0 error, which I believe is new to Exchange 2k SP1. I have been stumped by this for a few days. I have turned up the SMTP logging to maximum and it indicates it is failing on the DATA command, although is fine when I use this command on telnet. Thanks for your help. Timothy J. RE: Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000
Make sure you turn off the 5.5 server first, without doing all the removal procedures, and test everything, especially Public Folders. I was sure I had moved the Public Folders and did not test, but some did not replicate and I had to do a restore, and export to PST's then import to Public Folders. Wish I had tested a little more Tim Hooks -Original Message- From: Brian [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, January 18, 2002 9:30 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 I have an Exchange 5.5 site to which I joined an Exchange 2000 server. The Exchange 5.5 server is effectively unused - a drone. I want to dis-entangle the 5.5 server from the site. My plan: Un-install the 5.5 server, and convert the site to native mode. Fix from Trend for Exchange 2000 Attachment blocking
Just got off the phone with Trend. I noticed .bat files were not being blocked even though they were on my list of attachments to block by file extension. Trend indicates that blocking by file extension interprets by "true file type," meaning a .bat is a .txt file! I applied the fix right after I sent the first message and assumed it would work. It did not work for .bat files. It did work for .scr and .vbs. RE: Fix from Trend for Exchange 2000 Attachment blocking
Trend does that too. The problem was it would interpret a .bat file as a text file... I have noticed now that if I send autoexec.bat from a Windows 2000 client, OL 9.0.0.3821 it does not get blocked. If I send from a Win98 client, OL 9.0.0.2711 it does get blocked. The only files so far I have had a problem with are .bat files. I plan to test all that I attempt to block on my list today. I will report my results. Timothy J. Hooks, MCSE Kegler, Brown, Hill & Ritter 65 E. Exchange 2K SP3 and moderated public folders?
Anybody have moderated folders quit working correctly after adding SP3? One of our moderated folders (meaning posted items are forwarded first to a moderator, auto message generated for the sender, previewed, and then OK'ed for the public folder) no longer works. The moderator does not get the message, the auto message is not sent and the item is not posted. If I turn off moderation users can post freely - no problems. Has only been a problem since Exchange SP3. We use a single domain, single Exchange server, single site on Windows 2k sp2. Thanks for your input. Timothy J. Strange account problem - need your advice...
I went from Exchange 5.5 to 2000 on a new box about 10 months ago. I had one user account that did not move (let's call the account JSmith), I think he was hidden from the GAL. At any rate I was not concerned as his mailbox was going to be disabled anyways. I uninstalled 5.5 from the old server months ago. Here is my problem, jsmith still gets email and it goes into a queue for the old exchange server, which never replies and finally a NDR is generated. In active directory the Exchange task available for him is to enable instant messaging - I can neither create or delete an email box. His exchange info in AD is grayed out - but it indicates he has an account on the old server. His Windows user account cannot be deleted. Any ideas on how to remove his old exchange info? I assume it could be done though adsi edit somehow - if so where and what are the repercussions? Or better yet is there some utility to strip this info out? Thanks for your help. Timothy J. Security Log errors
I have security event log errors on my domain controllers ever since bringing Exchange 2000 into our enterprise. A little background - single domain, single site, win2k SP3, native mode. Exchange 2k SP2 - moved mailboxes from an Exchange 5.5 box and followed the steps to remove the first exchange server. Exchange 5.5 was uninstalled from the old server, but the box itself remains as a DC on the network. The errors occur every minute for 15 minutes, every 4 hours, exactly when one of the RUS runs. When the RUS was "Always Run" so were the errors. There are 2 RUS entries, one updates all the time and works fine (Recipient Update Service (Athena)). The other runs every four hours and produces 15 errors per pop (Recipient Update Service (Enterprise Configuration)). Do I really need two of these? Is there anyway to see what exactly is in the individual RUS? Thanks for your help. Did not have three that I know of. The "Operation ID" changes in each message as does the as does the "Client Logon ID:" the rest is exactly the same. Thanks for your help. RE: Security Log errors
The two choices I have for the RUS agreements are "rebuild" or "update now" - are there potential negative consequences to running either of these operations in the middle of the day? I have only about 135 users and the server has lots of RAM and processing power. Thanks. What irked me about this was that well after I had alerted the department to this problem, the security group issued a warning *after* a user managed to get infected with this one. It was one of those "we have just discovered the following virus, which has infected a user workstation". Okay - so neither the Help Desk nor SECURITY (!!!) paid any attention to the warning I sent. *sigh* A prophet is without honor in her own land. Number of Storage Groups?
Hello All, I am nearing the 16 GB limit on my first and only storage group on an Exchange 2000 server (NOT Enterprise edition). Can I simply create another storage group on the same server and move over half my users get the space limit down from 16 GIGS? Thanks for your help. Timothy J. Exchange locks up
Hello All, Last Wednesday, one week ago, without any warning our information store stopped - reached the 16 gig limit. What I did not know was that the 16 gigs is a total of both the .stm file and the .edb file. I do not know if the public folders contributed to the 16 gigs or not as ours only account for 100 MB. My first gripe - you would think there might be a warning message or two in the event log before it shuts down!? Anyways I knew we were getting closer to the limit and I helped some people get their mailboxes cleaned out in the 2 weeks previous. Here are the steps we followed. Rebooted. IS still would not load. Ran eseutil Brought it online - deleted the deleted items manually and changed the deleted item retention time from 30 days to 6 days. Ran eseutil again - recaptured 5 gigs. Since that day I have the server freeze up several times a day - anyone in Outlook notices - wait a few minutes and everything comes back. If I am at the server I can't even get logged in until it frees up. I have rebooted the server a couple times - no use. The event log reports very, very little. I get a 2078 information error about dsaccess stopping, however this message comes after the slowdown and things are working again - more like a symptom of an underlying problem. I turned up dsaccess logging - no useful info there. Here is the setup: Exchange 2000, sp3 Windows 2000, sp3 dual 1.6 processors 1.5 gigs RAM Compaq proliant, Hardware raid 5 and raid 1 for logs single domain, single site, one exchange server, 150 users running Trend scanmail for exchange Installed Trend Interscan Messaging suite to block spam about 2 weeks ago - however, everything was just fine until the IS reached its limit. Any comments, suggestions or ideas on how to solve this one are appreciated. Thanks. RE: Exchange locks up
I have remained steady at 11.4 gigs for a week. I was not locking up at all as I got closer and closer to 16 gigs before last week. That doesn't make sense. -Original Message- From: Bob Sadler [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, April 03, 2003 8:39 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Exchange locks up I think what Ed is saying is that the server lockups are caused by the short amount of space you have available, and you may even be running out of space and that is causing the lockups. If you got the Enterprise edition you could bypass the limit of the 16GB. OT: Remapping Drives
This is an off topic question but I ask this group because you seem to know the most. We are retiring a couple domain controllers (windows 2000) and replacing them with new machines with different netbios names and different IP addresses. I need to accomplish 2 tasks - 1. Remap a couple network drive for all users. 2. Remap the individual, private drives that are set for each user in AD (connect drive letter to...). I was thinking their might be a nice ADSI edit script way to do this instead of one by one. Thanks for your help.
