The dumpster for a user is cleared when that user is moved using the
MOVE MAILBOX task in ADUC. It doesn't matter if the user is going
between MDB or between servers.

I moved a user from a server that we are retiring to a new server
yesterday. Now he wants to restore deleted items from the retention
folder, but it is empty when you bring it up. The new server has the
same deleted items retention setting as the old server (30 days). Is
there any way to get to the deleted items retention folder on the old
server? It is still up and running and a member of the organization.
Thank you for any help.

Nope. Once you moved the mailbox, anything recoverable in the DIR bin got
whacked. You will have to restore from backup.

RE: Public Folder Replication Across Routing Groups

2003-06-02 Thread Neil Doody
What do you mean by instance? Do you mean an available public folder
store on each local server which pertains to the global public's from
the context you want to replicate from?

Well if so, then yes :)

I fixerered this problem, I think some kind of corruption took place
more than anything. I reverted back to my old config, they still didn't
work. I put it back how I wanted it, obviously they were still not
working.

What I did then was delete the public folder store on each server that
was having the problem and re-created it, after a while they were back
working again, so ive done this on every server and there all fine now,
they are all working as I want them with my chosen setup :)

Hi, to combat a problem I have been having, I have recreated the
configuration within Exchange, and used different routing groups for
different servers to accomplish the same setup as I had previously.

However, since putting the different servers in different routing
groups,
public folders are no longer working. The public folders work at head
office where I am, but at remote sites where servers are in a different
routing group, the public folders cannot be accessed and they say that
they
probably haven't been replicated.

Nope. Ex2K Std edition only allows a single SG (16GB max). You need to
purchase, license and install Enterprise Edition, which will allow you to
have expanded storage capability.

Nope. Ex2K Std edition only allows a single SG (16GB max). You need to
purchase, license and install Enterprise Edition, which will allow you to
have expanded storage capability.

 Subject: Number of Storage Groups?

 Hello All,
I am nearing the 16 GB limit on my first and only storage group on an
Exchange 2000 server (NOT Enterprise edition).
Can I simply create another storage group on the same server and move
over half my users get the space limit down from 16 GIGS? Thanks for
 your help.

Cannot Move Servers Between Administrative Groups in Exchange 2000Server

2003-03-04 Thread Jean-Francois Bourdeau
XADM: Cannot Move Servers Between Administrative Groups in Exchange 2000 Server
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=261170

Is there any tricks or workaround to move an exchange server 2000 to a
different admin group ?

By mistake our ex2k server has been installed in the wrong admin
group.

The Goal of that was to be able to delegate some administrative task
to an Admin only to that ex 2000 server. And protect the other ex2k
server...

We want to avoid having to reinstall the ex2k server if possible...

Hello Friends;

I am having a heck of a time with the Address Lists in E2K. I have setup a few
address lists for different domains that we are hosting on our system. On one domain
in particular they want a distribution group setup to send to everyone in the domain.
So far so good. I setup a Distribution Group called [EMAIL PROTECTED] The address
works great and the email gets to everyone just fine. Here is the problem. In their
Address List, using the filter builder, I can get the users listed just fine or I can
the Distribution Group listed just fine, but not both. My filters look a lot like:

User - Email Address - Does - End With - *thedomain.com
User - Alias - Does NOT - Start With - Administrator*
User - Alias - Does NOT - Start With - IUSR*

At this point, it brings up all of the recipients with no problem. If I add:

Group - Alias - Does - Start With - staff*

I get No results found. If I just run the Group line by itself, I get the group but
no users.

Can anyone offer some advice on this? I appreciate it.

Thank you for your time,
Eric J. Goforth

RE: Users and Distribution Groups in same Address List

2002-10-16 Thread Chris Scharff

I build my address lists based on common attributes across all objects...
The problem you are running into I believe (I looked at the problem briefly
when you first posted) is that the LDAP query you wind up creating is a
series of 'ands'and you need an 'or' for the DL objects to be included.
Microsoft has a whitepaper on Exchange hosting www.microsoft.com/isn which
goes into some detail on building address lists. You might check it for some
tips on building the lists that you want.

Hi,

I have the following scenario.
Two Exchange 5.5 Server part of the same organization but in different

How can they be put in one and the same Admin group? In a few month these

Is it possible to reinstall them into one Admin Group?

RE: SEPARATE EXCHANGE ROUTING GROUPS FOR HOSTING SAME DOMAIN ON S EPARATE EXCHANGE 2000 SERVERS

2002-08-09 Thread Chris Scharff

SMTP domains can span multiple routing groups.. your issues sound like they
could possibly be directory related. Can users see the entire GAL? Do they
receive NDRs? What do those NDRs say? Errors in the event viewer?

Subject: SEPARATE EXCHANGE ROUTING GROUPS FOR HOSTING SAME DOMAIN ON
 SEPARATE EXCHANGE 2000 SERVERS

 Hi!

I am trying to host a single domain, named us.com on two separate exchange
2000 servers that are each in a separate routing group connected by a
 routing group connector.

However, it is not possible to send mail between recipients hosted on each
exchange server, since a bounce occurs. Apparently, the same domain cannot
be hosted on two exchange servers that are in SEPARATE routing groups.

The above scenario DOES WORK if placing the two exchange servers in the
SAME routing group. It appears that having exchange servers in the same
routing group ensures that both exchange servers are using the same global
catalog in active directory to deliver mail.

The way my domain is split is so that one server, call it server A, hosts
part of mailboxes for domain us.com. Server B hosts part of mailboxes for
domain us.com and all mailboxes for domain europe.local. Both server A and
B are primary domain controllers with active directory, DNS and Exchange
 installed on a single machine.

Why do server A and B have to be in different routing groups and have to
host the same domain? Server A is located in the US, server B is in
Europe. They are connected via a rather reliable VPN. Only server A has a
static Internet IP assigned, therefore server B cannot directly accept
messages from the Internet; it is connected to a DSL modem with a dynamic
IP. Users on server A and B share the same domain name - us.com; user
account and mailbox for [EMAIL PROTECTED] is located in the US on server A,
while user account and mailbox for [EMAIL PROTECTED] is located in Europe on
server B. European users (connecting to server B) cannot have their
accounts hosted on server A, since they use Outlook to connect to server B
locally. The same, European, users also must have @us.com domain email set
as Primary SMTP Account, with the intranet SMTP address @europe.local set
 as secondary SMTP account.

 ACTIVE DIRECTORY IMPLEMENTATION:
Server A is PDC for domain us.com and has a trust relationship established
with server B that is PDC for domain europe.local. Both domains are within
the same forest. The DNS entry for domain us.com is on server A, a
secondary copy of the domain us.com is stored in server B's DNS. The MX
record for domain us.com is pointing only to the exchange server A, the
host being a.us.com. Is there a better DNS configuration for what we want?

Both Exchange servers are in the same Exchange organization and in the
same administrative group. Once routing connectors are created, servers
are connected to each other, everything appears to be working in the
 monitoring view.

Is there any way to implement this scenario with two Exchange servers in
separate routing groups. Once again, this scenario works with the two
servers in the same routing group, where it appears that mailboxes within
the same domain can be spread across multiple exchange servers. But we
need to separate the two servers, since they are not connected in a LAN,
and we are also using fax connectors that each must work within a separate
routing group with a separate server.

I would greatly appreciate any help!

 Regards,

 Marko

RE: SEPARATE EXCHANGE ROUTING GROUPS FOR HOSTING SAME DOMAIN ONSEPARATE EXCHANGE 2000 SERVERS

2002-08-09 Thread kanee

just because you have two exchange servers in 2 seperate routing groups that should
not prevent the 2 exchange servers from seeing each other or for the MTA's on each
server to be able to recognise which server the mailboxes are on and send them to the
appropriate server.

Are your routing groups connected via a smtp or a ip connector. Also are the upns for
the users the same on both servers, meaning when you create a user name on the win2k
dc when it gives you the option for upn name does it say xyz.com on both servers,
meaning if you create a user cslled kane on server a is it [EMAIL PROTECTED] and if you
create a user called kane1 on server b is it [EMAIL PROTECTED] or is it
[EMAIL PROTECTED] UPNS have to be the same on both servers. Having said that are
these 2 servers in the same domain, sorry if you had already answered this question in
your essay, but answer it again. Are they part of the same domain or are they 2
seperate domainslike one is xyz.us.com and the other is xyz.europe.com. If they are
different i bet you your upns are also different. I would suggest trying to create a
upn on server b also called xyz.us.com and assign that all your users and then see if
the problem goes away. Also for your users in europe have you created a smtp server on
their exchange server and have that forward to a smart host or you did not bother
creating a virtual smtp server and directly forwarding everything to a smart host.
Just wondering..hope this helps or atleast give you a direction to look in to trouble
shoot.

Are the two domains in the same AD forest? If not, you have two
organizations and you will need some sort of third party directory
syncronization utility to essentially create contacts on one side for
mailboxes on the other.

SEPARATE EXCHANGE 2000 SERVERS

Hi!

I am trying to host a single domain, named us.com on two separate
exchange 2000 servers that are each in a separate routing group
connected by a routing group connector.

However, it is not possible to send mail between recipients hosted on
each exchange server, since a bounce occurs. Apparently, the same domain
cannot be hosted on two exchange servers that are in SEPARATE routing
groups.

The above scenario DOES WORK if placing the two exchange servers in the
SAME routing group. It appears that having exchange servers in the same
routing group ensures that both exchange servers are using the same
global catalog in active directory to deliver mail.

The way my domain is split is so that one server, call it server A,
hosts part of mailboxes for domain us.com. Server B hosts part of
mailboxes for domain us.com and all mailboxes for domain europe.local.
Both server A and B are primary domain controllers with active
directory, DNS and Exchange installed on a single machine.

Why do server A and B have to be in different routing groups and have to
host the same domain? Server A is located in the US, server B is in
Europe. They are connected via a rather reliable VPN. Only server A has
a static Internet IP assigned, therefore server B cannot directly accept
messages from the Internet; it is connected to a DSL modem with a
dynamic IP. Users on server A and B share the same domain name - us.com;
user account and mailbox for [EMAIL PROTECTED] is located in the US on server
A, while user account and mailbox for [EMAIL PROTECTED] is located in Europe
on server B. European users (connecting to server B) cannot have their
accounts hosted on server A, since they use Outlook to connect to server
B locally. The same, European, users also must have @us.com domain email
set as Primary SMTP Account, with the intranet SMTP address
@europe.local set as secondary SMTP account.

ACTIVE DIRECTORY IMPLEMENTATION:
Server A is PDC for domain us.com and has a trust relationship
established with server B that is PDC for domain europe.local. Both
domains are within the same forest. The DNS entry for domain us.com is
on server A, a secondary copy of the domain us.com is stored in server
B's DNS. The MX record for domain us.com is pointing only to the
exchange server A, the host being a.us.com. Is there a better DNS
configuration for what we want?

Both Exchange servers are in the same Exchange organization and in the
same administrative group. Once routing connectors are created, servers
are connected to each other, everything appears to be working in the
monitoring view

Is there any way to implement this scenario with two Exchange servers in

servers in the same routing group, where it appears that mailboxes
within the same domain can be spread across multiple exchange servers.
But we need to separate the two servers, since they are not connected in
a LAN, and we are also using fax connectors that each must work within a
separate routing group with a separate server.

I would greatly appreciate any help!

 Hello,

once again thanks for the help on an earlier question. i have one

we have about 1600 users (no more than 500 concurrent) and only one server
until next year sometime. the server is a dell 6600 with dual xeon 1.6Ghz
processors and 3 gigs of RAM. it has a Perc RAID card with 128 megs on it
and 2 har drives with RAID 1 for the OS, 2 hard drives with RAID 1 for the
logs, and 3 RAID 5 drives for the database.

my question is should i configure 1 storage group and 1 database for all
the users or should i break them down. is there even a performance issue
 having different storage groups etc.

 thanks for any input..

getting senile something about fragmented virtual memory when you have
a bunch of mailbox stores... I don't remember and I'm too lazy to go
look right now. If you break it down, do it for other reasons, like you
want your top brass to be in one store for quicker DR or something.
Although Because Missy said so is a perfectly valid reason to leave it

Using Global Groups as distribution lists in E2K

2002-07-15 Thread Ken Cornetet

We are running into some issues with our E2K migration plan.

We are creating an empty root NATIVE AD domain.
We are upgrading our NT4 master user domain to MIXED mode AD.

Original plan was to configure a DL connection agreement to create DLs as
universal security groups in the native AD domain, and everything else in
the mixed mode domain. Then, we found out that Outlook cannot be used to
manage DLs that aren't in the same domain (Outlook only talks to GCs, and
GCs only have read-only copies of groups from other domains).

One possible solution is to use global groups instead of universal groups.
We would write a script to read all of our MSX5.5 DLs and create
corresponding AD global groups in a special OU. Then, we'd configure a CA to
replicate DLs to this OU. I realize that global groups are limited to
members from the local domain, but that is OK. However, my questions are:

1. If ADC attempts to replicate a DL from MSX5.5 to AD and finds a global
group of the same name, will it populate the global group? In other words,
will group membership replication work?

2. I've never heard of anyone doing this. Am I missing something that is
going to bite me later?

We would eventually move to all native mode AD, and at point we'd convert
the global groups to universal security groups.

Sound reasonable?

unit-specific information. Then we create a group for each section of the
unit and place the appropriate members into that group. Like my examples,
we have some people that need access to specific folders so we have to
create groups for those users. Then there's the base-wide groups for when
we need to get info to everyone. And on and on. We have about 400 groups

I'm just curious if that's how it's done on the outside.

Im not sure why you would even need to create a group called HRO Users in
this particular case.
I'm lazy, so in this example, I would simply apply the different individual
user permissions on a folder by folder basis depending on which user
required it rather than creating a separate group.
I suppose you could always create one HRO Users group that they are all
members of and then apply DENY permissions individually to the users who do
not need access. On the other hand, if HRO Users represents 10,000 users and
each group is a percentage of that, then I would create individual groups
for each different area of folder access.
This probably didnt answer your question, but then again, while you are
thinking of creative ways to apply permissions, Im at home sleeping like a

you are need ing to do.

RE: Need help, Exchange 2000 admin groups

2002-06-04 Thread Leo

Thanks for the reply.
I will try this between all servers. As I read the technet article Q272218
I can run Rpingc.exe from one server and rpings.exe from the other server
to prove rpc connectivity.

Just one question.
Assuming our exchange 2000 server is called server2000 and our exchange
5.5 server that we selected to connect to is called server5. Along with
this we have several other exchange 5.5 servers/sites.

What is the communication flow?
Is server5 solely responsible for replicating config data it gets from
server2000 to other exchange 5.5 servers/5.5 sites in the org?
In which case all we we require is clear communication between server2000
and server5. And clear communication between server5 to all other exchange
5.5 servers/5.5 sites.

The reason I ask is that this is a new network and I don't think the other
exchange 5.5 servers/5.5 sites can see server2000 but the can see server5

Regards
Leo

Sounds like RPC connectivity problems. Time to whip out RPC Ping and get to
 work.

But we can not see any Exchange 2000 configuration in

We have increased the logging of the ADC to minimum for all

The only other clue we have is that the Automatically

The error states that the local bridgehead server has no

The bridgehead server listed in the error does have stores

RE: Need help, Exchange 2000 admin groups

2002-06-04 Thread Etts, Russell

Hi there

If I'm reading you correctly, this sounds like you should be looking at the
SRS service. The reason the SRS exists is so that the 5.5 servers can see
the 2000 servers.

Quick things to look at:

Is SRS running?
Is this a regular or cluster server?

Hope this points you in the right direction

Russell

Domain that contains MSX servers and users is mixed mode. Domain with
DLs (Universal Distribution Groups) is native. See second paragraph of
my original post.

I have found one Q article since my post that indicates I need a
separate RUS in the domain that the DLs are replicated to.
Unfortunately, it didn't spell out how to do that. More research on my
part...

I'm testing our 5.5 - 2K migration plan in a test lab, and I've run
into a stumbling block. Q295922 says that ADC migrates 5.5 DLs to AD
UDGs and that the E2K store will convert these to USGs as needed. This
is not what I'm seeing, so obviously, I'm confused...

I have two AD domains: ADSTEST (native) and KIITEST (mixed). All user
IDs and Exchange servers are in KIITEST. Connection agreements are in
place to replicate everything except DLs into KIITEST (mixed mode
domain). DLs go into ADSTEST (native AD).

Everything seems to be working EXCEPT that when mailboxes are moved from
the 5.5 server to the 2K server, any mailbox permissions granting access
to members of a DL no longer work. Checking the DLs in question shows
they are still USGs and have not been converted to USGs.

Everything I've seen about DLs used to grant security always reference
public folders - I've never seen mention about DLs used to grant
security to mailboxes. Do DLs need to be USGs to grant access to
mailboxes?

If so, must I convert them manually?

Re: Distribution Lists in Ex.5.5 converts to Distribution Lists Security Groups

2002-05-29 Thread sadek hamidani

The security Group is still used for giving permissions and access
If you don't mail enable it it will not be used for email as it will not
appear in the GAL
You only use security group for mail distribution if all the users in it
have the same access and privileges to resources
A Distribution group is the same as a DL in 5.5
I hope this helps a bit

The security Group is still used for giving permissions and access
If you don't mail enable it it will not be used for email as it will not
appear in the GAL
You only use security group for mail distribution if all the users in it
have the same access and privileges to resources
A Distribution group is the same as a DL in 5.5
I hope this helps a bit

RE: ? about the number of storage groups per server and number of stores

2002-05-29 Thread Webb, Andy

If I recall, you take a 100MB hit for each SG you load and another 10MB hit for each
IS within the SG. That's just to get the system started. Once the dynamic buffer
caching starts growing the allocation to hold the active data, it's more.

As Chris said, fragmentation of memory starts to become a problem. If you ever shut
down one of the stores or SG's for any reason on a system that fully loaded, you may
not be able to start it back up without a full restart.

Universal Distribution Groups vs. Universal Security Groups

2002-05-29 Thread Ken Cornetet

I'm testing our 5.5 - 2K migration plan in a test lab, and I've run into a
stumbling block. Q295922 says that ADC migrates 5.5 DLs to AD UDGs and that
the E2K store will convert these to USGs as needed. This is not what I'm
seeing, so obviously, I'm confused...

I have two AD domains: ADSTEST (native) and KIITEST (mixed). All user IDs
and Exchange servers are in KIITEST. Connection agreements are in place to
replicate everything except DLs into KIITEST (mixed mode domain). DLs go
into ADSTEST (native AD).

Everything seems to be working EXCEPT that when mailboxes are moved from the
5.5 server to the 2K server, any mailbox permissions granting access to
members of a DL no longer work. Checking the DLs in question shows they are
still USGs and have not been converted to USGs.

Everything I've seen about DLs used to grant security always reference
public folders - I've never seen mention about DLs used to grant security to
mailboxes. Do DLs need to be USGs to grant access to mailboxes?

If so, must I convert them manually?

Domain that contains MSX servers and users is mixed mode. Domain with DLs
(Universal Distribution Groups) is native. See second paragraph of my
original post.

I have found one Q article since my post that indicates I need a separate
RUS in the domain that the DLs are replicated to. Unfortunately, it didn't
spell out how to do that. More research on my part...

Re: Distribution Groups Global Security Groups

Think of security groups being a subset of
distribution groups. Every security group is also a
distribution group. Not all distribution groups are
security groups.

It probably does not make sense to use all security
groups to send mail, but that is something you can
figure out on a case-by-case basis.

Hi Ron,

I'm not using Ex2k yet but from Active directory training, security groups
can be used to provide access to resources (Shares and printers etc) and
also for distribution purposes (Exchange 2k), whereas distribution groups
can only be used for distribution purposes.

Like I said haven't actually used this in anger yet so peoples practical
experience may carry more weight.

Storage Group already contains the maximum number of stores allowed.

If I try to add another storage group I get a message from Exchange
complaining - This server already contains the maximum number of storage

Can someone explain this to me.

Thank you very much John. You are AMAZING!

--Felicity
The underlying programming was built for 15 SG and 6 MDB's per SG,
however,
practical limitations kick in with 4. All the Official MS documentation
says that Exchange 2K Enterprise version is limited to 4 SG's and 5 MDB's
 per SG.

You have to remember that each SG is a separate storage engine, requiring
it's own memory space and a big slice of processor time.

I thought you could create 15 storage groups and 6 stores per Exchange
 2000 server.

I currently have 4 storage groups and a max of five stores per storage
groups. If I try to add another store Exchange complains saying the

Distribution Lists vs Security Groups

2002-05-15 Thread Pennell, Ronald B.

When I moved my exchange 5.5 info to the AD my distribution lists also
become distribution groups and security groups.

Do they need to be both? Or can I remove the security group from the AD?

OK is there a tool out there that will let me say have different size
restrictions for different groups of users?

I do not want to do this on a per person basis..it took a long time to
get away from that. I presently do the restrictions on the priv for
everybody

But I do say have a group of users which could use more room on their
restrictions.

so it would be nice to say do the priv...then have a override for a group.

RE: Mailbox size restrictions - in groups?

2002-05-10 Thread Andrey Fyodorov

In E2K, you still can't set mailbox size limit based on group membership.
That would be a great feature though.

What you can do in E2K is set up multiple information stores with different
default mailbox size limits. Then create mailboxes for some people in one
store and for other people in another store.

You can have 4 storage groups, each storage group having 5 stores.

RE: AD built-in groups on other servers

2002-04-05 Thread Tom Meunier

There's no PDC in Windows 2000/Active directory. One of the roles
that's available in your domain is the PDC emulator role, but that's not
the same.

If you are asking Why can't I use AD Users Computers on my new
server? then the answer is:
1.) It's not a domain controller (dcpromo will fix this up for you) or
2.) You haven't set up the Terminal Services client on it, and set your
server to do it. or
3.) You haven't installed the ADMINPAK.MSI on that server.

Pick one. Administer righteously thereafter.

RE: E2K Migration Groups

2002-04-02 Thread Mark Harford

It's possible that they only convert to USGs when the PF is actually
accessed.

Are you actually experiencing problems accessing your Public Folders or are
you just trying to pre-empt potential problems?

Mark

P.S. Please don't snip off the whole conversation thread, just the junk
signatures/disclaimers at the bottom.

E2K Migration Groups

2002-03-29 Thread swynk1

I established the Native-Mode domain to host the Universal Group and
created a CA to replicate only distribution lists to it. I also installed
the first Exchange 2000 server into the same site as the Exchange 5.5. The
information store suppose to detect what distribution list being used to
assign permission on Public Folder and convert them to a Universal
Security Group. They only exist in the native mode domain and not the
other domain. The Information store suppose to automatically convert them
to USG. I verified that the group are being used to assign permission to
PF.

Any idea why there are still UDG and not being converted to USG? They are
too many to convert manually.

Thanks,
TMS
