RE: Exchange 5.5 restore slow
I experienced this once, and it was because the RAID card was set to NO CACHE for WRITE. A common thing done back in the olden days with Exchange, but not what you want when doing a restore. RE: Outlook and OWA clients slow after restore of Exchange 2000 Server
The OWA part I can understand as it is acting like a user hits the webserver for the first time. There are ways to speed up. Look at the OWA papers for E2K. The other sounds like a network issue possible. Guessing here different MAC addresses in the switches memory possible cause. Back in the early days of the Exchange server ( NT4.0, now with SP6 )setup, We run NTBackup against the Exchange (5.5) server. It was free and after a case of needing to use the backup, we realize we had to get different software. Well, for legal reasons, I'm stuck going through a bunch of these tapes looking for evidence. Had to restore from tape
Hi Had one of my 7 exchange servers (nt4, ex5.5, all in the same site) crash recently and it took the logs with it. So staged a new server and dumped the online backup to it and it came up fine. However...now i am getting some reports of some odd behavior. One of those being that users in another domain are reporting that they are having to logon to the outlook client where they had not before. Other things include a user on that server getting notices that she had gone over the mailbox size limit when the mailbox was very small and no where near the limit. Another incident is a remote user trying to delete folders from OWA. Wouldn't let him. There is one other thing and that is there are several reports of this kind: "Unable to update public free/busy data. The contents of the folder are currently unavailable...". I have check this and the server that crashed was a replication partner with the 1st server. I have since removed that server from the list and replaced it with another. Not sure yet if that has solved that issue. So i am considering running IS/DS Consistency adjuster but am paranoid about doing so. Another question would be would it have been a good idea after the online restore to run it then or something else. Any suggestions would be helpful Thanks Warren _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Web Interface: http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=exchange&text_mode=&lang=english To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: slow login with mac clients after restore.
Some questions first. 1) Are we dealing with Exchange 5.5 or Exchange 2000? What service pack level are you running? 2) How are the Macs connected to the network? 3) What rev of the MAC OS are they running? 4) Do the Macs have a HOSTS file and if so is it setup correctly? 5) For the restore server did you change anything? More importantly, did you restore to the same hardware or to a completely new server? I'm assuming same hardware at this point. 6) Since the Macs can talk to the server what are the ping times like? (You can use MacPing to determine this if you run anything earlier than Mac OSX. If you are running MacOSX then bring up a terminal window and run it from there.). This will do for a start. Regards. slow login with mac clients after restore.
last night we did a restore because we've been getting some database errors in the event log. we restored from a good backup and played in the log files as normal - everything worked great and we're up and running again, except now our mac users with outlook 2001 take about 5 minutes to log in. they enter credentials at startup and outlook 2001 just hangs for 5 minutes and then starts and works perfectly. we are going to restart the server at lunch to see if this fixes it but i'm not hopeful. any ideas? _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Web Interface: http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=exchange&text_mode=&lang=english To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

30 day's worth seems to be ~40% of my store, so just slightly less than you've seen. One of the nightly (or weekly, can't remember) maintenance processes shows the byte count for tombstoned objects, which would be the closest estimation of the extent to which Deleted Item Retension impacts your store size. -- Roger D. Add the deleted items (kb) field to the view of the mailbox store / mailboxes leaf of the Exchange System manager and total the sizes used. They need to be restored to a parallel Exchange installation and then exported/imported. RE: retention space.. IIRC elsewhere in the thread you said your current DIR is 7 days, your DIR for 30 days will ~= 4x the space currently used. On 4/2/03 13:53, "Joshua R. RE: Public Folder Restore
Sorry Josh...my bag on the E2K SP3 miss...I have never worked with E2K. However, with THAT said... ;o) Having your PF's set to 0 days retention times doesn't necessarily mean that they are automatically gone. For instance...My PF's are also set to 0 days. This morning, a secretary mistakenly deletes a PF that she has access to. But...since my server had not yet run it's nightly Online Defrag and the cleanup of items past the set retention date, I was still able to go in and recover the PF. -Original Message- From: Joshua R. No. If Retained Delted Items does not help, then restore the database to your recovery server and pull the needed data from there. Re: Full Exchange Server restore query
Do you really need to keep the same name? Are you sure? Are you really sure? For this type of restore I don't see the need to do anything off network. Shut down the old server, restore to the new server, fix whatever is still broke. [1] But I try my darndest to never have to actually do that and use the ECMSM instead if at all possible. Restore to Another Server
I have 2 Exchange 2000 servers that are patched to the same level. I'm trying to restore a backup of a Mailbox store from one server to the other. I'm using Ntbackup and I keep getting "The specified computer is not a Microsoft Exchange Server or its Exchange Server services are not started." I checked and the services are, in fact, started on the server I'm trying to restore to. So, I'm not sure what's going on. Any ideas??? You have to go into the properties of the public store (under Servers, servername) an add instances of the folders you need to recover, assuming that they're in the database you restored. That's certainly an option. And scan everything from service packs to third party apps prior to applying them to your server. But what of the many Exchange servers out there that provide more than just email? Those dreaded SBS boxes? And remember Nimda?
