RE: Exchange 5.5 restore slow

2003-10-17 Thread MS Exchange List

I experienced this once, and it was because the RAID card was set to NO
CACHE for WRITE. A common thing done back in the olden days with
Exchange, but not what you want when doing a restore.

Hi all,
Exchange 5.5 SP4, Windows NT 4.0 SP 6, NT Backup

I have recently run 2 test restores of my exchange server and the
restore of the Information Store has been extremely slow, only .5 Gig
per hour. (The store is 11 Gig.) In the past, I've been able to
restore in 2.5 hours. Just wondering if anyone has come across this and
has any suggestions on how to troubleshoot? Tried different tapes, tape
drives and cables...

Hardware used - Compaq Proliant, Dual 3 Gig Xeon Proc, 2 Gig RAM,
Quantum DLT 8000

Thanks in advance.

RE: Outlook and OWA clients slow after restore of Exchange 2000 Server

2003-09-09 Thread Tony Hlabse
The OWA part I can understand as it is acting like a user hits the webserver
for the first time. There are ways to speed up. Look at the OWA papers for
E2K. The other sounds like a network issue possible. Guessing here different
MAC addresses in the switches memory possible cause.

We only did a restore of exchange in ntbackup. The same computer name, and
ip where configured. We basically downed the existing server unplugged it
from the network, reset the computer account and brought up a new server
with the same name rejoined to domain and restored exchange.

Hello,

I am currently encountering problems with our Outlook and OWA clients
connecting to exchange after a restore of our Exchange 2000 server. After
the restore Outlook clients continuously receive a window that informs the
user that "Outlook is retrieving data from the Microsoft Exchange server".
We have also noticed that OWA performance is very slow. On occasion
messages that are selected for reply receive a page not found.

Our exchange server setup is as follows:

Exchange 2000 SP3 and post sp3 fixes applied

Windows 2000 with SP4

Exchange is installed on a member server

A Domain controller is located on the same network as the Exchange server

We also have a domain controller at a remote location connected via T1

Has anyone encountered a similar problem?

Thanks in advance

NTBackup of Exchange * Need Restore Options *

2003-09-03 Thread Michael Henry
Back in the early days of the Exchange server ( NT4.0, now with SP6 )setup,
We run NTBackup against the Exchange (5.5) server. It was free and after a
case of needing to use the backup, we realize we had to get different
software.

Well, for legal reasons, I'm stuck going through a bunch of these tapes
looking for evidence.

Is there a way to Restore the data/files on the tapes without restoring it
back to the Exchange server itself first?

TIA

Sounds like an ideal job for the person that used ESM to delete the

The public folder was deleted through the ESM utility, not via Outlook.

It looks like I'll be building a recovery server, air-gapped from the
production network and getting some practical experience doing the
restore to an offline server.

John,

What about deleted item retention? Even if it wasn't switched on when
the user deleted the folders, putting it on before the restore might
catch the deletion run by the logs.

Just a thought - Something to try.

Got a question for everyone on the lists:

If someone deletes a tree of public folders, and I restore the
previous day's backup, then allow the log files to play to get the
public folder database back to consistency; will the deletion re-occur
since that action is contained in the log files?

Exchange 2000 with all SPs
Win2K with SP2 or three (one less than the latest)

Backup and restore with Backup Exec.

Depends on what you need :) The priv.edb and priv.stm should give you
all mail that has been committed to the databases, but will not give you
mail that has been received since that time. Also, having the same
server name is not quite as important, but having the same org name and
same Admin Group and Storage Group is what is important. Having the
same server name should be absolutely fine though. Since you are not
doing a typical restore though, you will probably have to stop the
Exchange services, then replace the files. I also wouldn't be surprised
if you may find that you have to run eseutil and/or isinteg to get the
database mounted. Before running those though, try and re-start the
services and then take note of any errors you receive. Also, before
running eseutil or isinteg, make sure that you still have your backup
copy of the databases in case something happens to them while running
either of those utilities.

OK, I have a priv.edb and priv.stm from an old backup (just these two
files). I have built an offline exchange server with the same names and
service packs as outlined by Microsoft. My question is, can I recover
with just the files or do I need a full Exchange backup from a program
such as Veritas or Windows Backup? Thanks.

files). I have built an offline exchange server with the same names and
service packs as outlined by Microsoft. My question is, can I recover
with just the files or do I need a full Exchange backup from a program
such as Veritas or Windows Backup? Thanks.

Had to restore from tape

2003-07-07 Thread Bennett, Warren Mr DAC 5 SIG CMD
Hi

Had one of my 7 exchange servers (nt4, ex5.5, all in the same site) crash
recently and it took the logs with it. So staged a new server and dumped the
online backup to it and it came up fine. However...now i am getting some
reports of some odd behavior. One of those being that users in another
domain are reporting that they are having to logon to the outlook client
where they had not before. Other things include a user on that server
getting notices that she had gone over the mailbox size limit when the
mailbox was very small and no where near the limit.
Another incident is a remote user trying to delete folders from OWA.
Wouldn't let him.

There is one other thing and that is there are several reports of this kind:
"Unable to update public free/busy data. The contents of the folder are
currently unavailable...". I have check this and the server that crashed was
a replication partner with the 1st server. I have since removed that server
from the list and replaced it with another. Not sure yet if that has solved
that issue.

So i am considering running IS/DS Consistency adjuster but am paranoid about
doing so. Another question would be would it have been a good idea after the
online restore to run it then or something else.

Any suggestions would be helpful
Thanks

Warren

If you are using Veritas as a backup system and you ant to restore
Exchange5.5,which procedure would you follow Microsoft restore or Veritas
restore? I am getting readt to restore exchange and i was looking at
Veritas way of doing it, and also Microsoft way, and i figured since i am
using Veritas, i might as well do it theirway

Hmmm, this slow login problem has appeared again. All mac clients (outlook
2001) hang for five minutes after entering login credentials. After that the
client works perfectly...

- Exchange 5.5 SP4
- Macs connecting via IP
- Mixed MAC OS versions (9.2 > X)
- All macs have correct hosts file, and dns servers (dns contains correct
info)
- Exchange was restored two days ago from backup, to the same server, 1gb of
transaction logs played in
- All other networking on macs seems fine
- All windows clients are fine

RE: slow login with mac clients after restore.

2003-06-18 Thread Atkinson, Daniel
Hmmm, this slow login problem has appeared again. All mac clients (outlook
2001) hang for five minutes after entering login credentials. After that the
client works perfectly...

- Exchange 5.5 SP4
- Macs connecting via IP
- Mixed MAC OS versions (9.2 > X)
- All macs have correct hosts file, and dns servers (dns contains correct
info)
- Exchange was restored two days ago from backup, to the same server, 1gb of
transaction logs played in
- All other networking on macs seems fine
- All windows clients are fine

It's ok, the restart fixed it, some gremlin or other...

Thanks anyway.

RE: slow login with mac clients after restore.

2003-06-17 Thread Couch, Nate
Some questions first.

1) Are we dealing with Exchange 5.5 or Exchange 2000? What service pack
level are you running?
2) How are the Macs connected to the network?
3) What rev of the MAC OS are they running?
4) Do the Macs have a HOSTS file and if so is it setup correctly?
5) For the restore server did you change anything? More importantly, did
you restore to the same hardware or to a completely new server? I'm
assuming same hardware at this point.
6) Since the Macs can talk to the server what are the ping times like? (You
can use MacPing to determine this if you run anything earlier than Mac OSX.
If you are running MacOSX then bring up a terminal window and run it from
there.).

This will do for a start.

Regards.

slow login with mac clients after restore.

2003-06-17 Thread Atkinson, Daniel
last night we did a restore because we've been getting some database errors
in the event log. we restored from a good backup and played in the log files
as normal - everything worked great and we're up and running again, except
now our mac users with outlook 2001 take about 5 minutes to log in.

they enter credentials at startup and outlook 2001 just hangs for 5 minutes
and then starts and works perfectly.

we are going to restart the server at lunch to see if this fixes it but i'm
not hopeful.

any ideas?

You can use Exmerge with the Dumpster switch and recover those items.

Recover Deleted Items from restore

2003-06-03 Thread Brian Ko

Hello!

Does anyone know if Recover Deleted Items are available from a restore?
I for some reason thought that I couldn't recover messages from Recover
Deleted Items when I do a restore, but I just did a restore and looked
in the Recover Deleted Items and saw messages there.

Thanks in advance,

Brian

It could be. Is that different server in the same forest, looking at a

Hi all,

MSX2000+SP3

I am using the following article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;297289 I have got
this error when starting the RESTORE (using NTBACKUP from a server different
than the exchange server), for the restore I have selected logfiles+mailbox
store+public folder store.

Unable to create the log path. Check to make sure that it is a valid path.

for sure I am using a valid path, I have tried both a *valid* path on the
computer where the tape device is and a *valid* path on the exchange server
none of these work.

any ideas?

RE: Public Folder Restore

2003-04-03 Thread Roger Seielstad
30 day's worth seems to be ~40% of my store, so just slightly less than
you've seen.

One of the nightly (or weekly, can't remember) maintenance processes shows
the byte count for tombstoned objects, which would be the closest estimation
of the extent to which Deleted Item Retension impacts your store size.

RE: Public Folder Restore

2003-04-02 Thread Ed Crowley
My experience was that 30 days' deleted item retention roughly doubled
the size of the information store, 60 days' trebled it and and 90 days'
quadrupled it. This is obviously a rough order of magnitude based on my
employers' users' particular usage patterns, but I've never heard any
other figures. I'd be interested in others' observations.

IIRC, no. But it's been a while since I had to restore individual PFs,
so I could be mistaken.

They need to be restored to a parallel Exchange installation and then
exported/imported.

RE: retention space.. IIRC elsewhere in the thread you said your current
DIR is 7 days, your DIR for 30 days will ~= 4x the space currently used.

Add the deleted items (kb) field to the view of the mailbox store /
mailboxes leaf of the Exchange System manager and total the sizes used. Or I
believe the perfmon object MSExchangeIS Mailbox/Total size of Recoverable
Items and the corresponding field for MSExchangeIS Public will provide this
information as well.

Having your PF's set to 0 days retention times doesn't necessarily mean

has access to. But...since my server had not yet run it's nightly Online

able to go in and recover the PF.

If you have are using the "Ed Crowley Never Restore Method" and have
also implemented TechNet Knowledge Base article Q178630, you will be
able to go to the parent folder of the PF that was deleted, then go to
"Tools | Recover Deleted Items.." and simply put the PF back.

If you have are using the "Ed Crowley Never Restore Method" and have also
implemented TechNet Knowledge Base article Q178630, you will be able to go
to the parent folder of the PF that was deleted, then go to "Tools | Recover
Deleted Items.." and simply put the PF back.

RE: Public Folder Restore

2003-04-02 Thread Joshua R. Morgan
A word of note...

It looks like (in Exchnage 2000) Item Retention for Public Folders is
configured Separately from Mailbox retention.

With that said my Pf's were set to 0 days, can I restore the PF's to a
Different server and get them from there?

Neither.

READ the KB article listed and implement it on your machine. Then you
go to the parent folder in question from YOUR Outlook client.

Cool I've done this before but not with a public folder

With a PF do I need to be on the machine of the person who deleted or
just logged into their mailbox?

If Retained Delted Items does not help, then restore the database to
your recovery server and pull the needed data from there.

One of our users mistakenly deleted his past Friday's calendar
information
through his PDA. We do have a backup of our Exchange server data for
this
past weekend. My question is there any utility in exchange which will
let
me restore only his calendar information from the backup? Any
assistance
would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You could have a look at www.ontrack.com. I have just downloaded an
evaluation of the PowerTools product, which is supposed to be able to do
what you are wanting to do. Perhaps others on the list could comment on

The Ed Crowley Move Server method described in appendix A of the FAQ (I

And also, what is ECMSM?

Re: Full Exchange Server restore query

2003-01-20 Thread Andy David
Ed's method is the way to go. I have done it a number of times (in fact just a few
weeks ago) and it is quite painless.

Since you are installing 5.5 on a W2k server, you may find this of interest as well:
http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/techinfo/deployment/55/Upgrade2000qi.asp

One more thing: As Mr. Scharff pointed out a few days ago, any items in DIR are
toast[1] when you move a mailbox to another server, so if they need to recover
anything after you move their mailbox, you may be suprised to find there is nothing
there.

The Ed Crowley Move Server method described in appendix A of the FAQ (I

Re: Full Exchange Server restore query

2003-01-20 Thread Chris Scharff
Do you really need to keep the same name? Are you sure? Are you really sure?

For this type of restore I don't see the need to do anything off network.
Shut down the old server, restore to the new server, fix whatever is still
broke. [1]

But I try my darndest to never have to actually do that and use the ECMSM
instead if at all possible.

[1] More or less.

Restore to Another Server

2003-01-15 Thread Mike Winfrey
I have 2 Exchange 2000 servers that are patched to the same level. I'm
trying to restore a backup of a Mailbox store from one server to the
other. I'm using Ntbackup and I keep getting "The specified computer is
not a Microsoft Exchange Server or its Exchange Server services are not
started." I checked and the services are, in fact, started on the
server I'm trying to restore to. So, I'm not sure what's going on. Any
ideas???

Thanks,
Mike Winfrey

You have to go into the properties of the public store (under Servers,
servername) an add instances of the folders you need to recover,
assuming that they're in the database you restored.

I got my diaster recovery surver up and was able to restore the info

store, of the home server of the folder, and was able to do a consistancy
adjuster. this created all the user mailboxes and the structure of the
public folders. When I try to open any public folder, the message
"contents is unavailable, either the server servicing the folder is down
or it has not replicated yet".

the diaster server is in the same org/same site as the original server but
not the same computer name

thanks in advance
Rich

RE: FAST RESTORE?

2002-12-10 Thread East, Bill
I'm not sure I'd agree 100% with you there. I've seen Klez play havoc on an
Exchange server that had some shares that the infected user could write to.
Defense in depth suggests that you want to virus-protect the system and
application files.

RE: FAST RESTORE?

2002-12-05 Thread William Lefkovics

That's certainly an option. And scan everything from service packs to
third party apps prior to applying them to your server.

But what of the many Exchange servers out there that provide more than
just email? Those dreaded SBS boxes? And remember Nimda?

For some, file level scanning will remain, but as said before exclude
Exchange components.
